Thanks so much for sharing your experience. I've seen many channels where people have an ileostomy and you're the only person I've found with a colostomy. I don't have a stoma but after learning a bit, I've found it really interesting. It's reminded me that you never know what someone else may be dealing with, it's reminded me to try and have some more patience and understanding with others. So thank you and I hope you're doing well and all is going well!☺️
Yes we should learn to have more patience with people. Life gets in the way sometimes and we are so busy we can easily be distracted from giving people time.
Thankyou for yr video. I suffer from a lot of pancaking esp at night or very active filling up my bag so I end up changing or emptying it . I don’t sleep through so will irrigating before bedtime help with that?
Sidney! Thank you, one thousand times over. I will be changing from an ileostomy to a colostomy, just as you have. I was feeling very worried and upset at the thought of walking around with a bag of poop in my pants. Irrigation is a big came changer. Thank you so much for showing me the way. Your demonstrating in real life is generous beyond. God bless. ❤
I've never heard of this procedure before; thank you for the demo. Got my stoma almost three years ago, and I can see where this process could be helpful even when used occasionally. Bookmarking!
Thank you for watching. I enjoy doing the videos. But I only like doing videos that I think will help which is why there is often a big gap between videos
To be honest having a stoma doesn't impact on my life I was chain sawing branches off my tree in the garden the other day, I always have spare bags on me whenever I am out either at work or otherwise, your videos really helped me In the early days after my operation thank you very much sydney.
I have an ileostomy stoma & im told by stoma nurses that with ileostomys you can not do irrigations at home you need to stay in hospital over night.. Thankyou so much for showing all of this.. us with stomas like to see how everything thing is done done in real life.. most youtubers fail on that.. & dont show you the stomas/output x
Sir God bless you for such an informative and well done video. Your casualness and relaxed manner really put people at ease to those unfamiliar with this. My new partner has had a colostomy due to cancer and I am understanding how this all works. Many thanks.
Thank you so much for the video. I had at-home nursing when I tried this the first time and it went really well. Now, doing on my own it's challenging.
Hi Chris. Thanks for doing the stoma irrigation demonstration. I am considering irrigation for different reasons to you but have found it very difficult to find information on the subject. I asked about it on an online group and got zero response. Your video has given me a good idea what’s involved if I decide to go head and try it.
I use the time to read email and the news on my iPad. I also use a reusable sheath that uses an elastic belt and I clip the end closed and tuck that the end into the belt. I can make the bed, fold clothes, etc and I’ve only had a problem once or twice in 9 years.
Thank you for sharing your experience with us.. i'm student nurse of asian country .... i had never seen this procedure practice our hospital settings ... i learnt lot of things ..and i again thank you to ..god bless
Hi Chris, I have slow transit constipation. I’m getting a colostomy in a month because my large intestine is just not working and I have a rectal prolapse so I’m sure you know this because you shared your irrigation video pretty good thank you I do take a medication that helps him with a slow transit call motegrity.
I’m getting ready to start irrigating, first time will be in the morning. I’m looking forward to starting but I am a bit nervous. I’m in the US our products are slightly different.
Very helpful demonstration! I'm working on my ostomy nurse certification and didn't get a chance to see this in practice. Thanks for the FULL demonstration 💩
Thank you for sharing this! I needed to learn about Stoma's for my final exams, and that really helped me understand the process of "flushing" the colon. Hope you're doing great, mate! :)
Thanks Chris. I’ve been irrigating for close to a decade and rec’d your video for a friend who’s a new ostomate to show him what’s possible beyond a bag. I did have a thought about your skin around your stoma… have you tried dusting your skin around the stoma with antifungal (athlete’s foot) powder and then dab skin barrier on it to hold the powder in place. That usually clears up any irritation I get around my stoma.
One last thing... I'd love to hear how camping with the irrigation went. That's one thing I haven't done since I had my ostomy surgery (for more than one night anyway).
Athletes foot powder is what my et nurse gave to me. It worked wonderful to help heal the excoreation. I would apply barrier splay over the powder then put on the appliance.
Hola qué función cumplen las Irrigaciones en Ostomas?? Soy de Argentina y tengo una Ileostomia definitiva y la verdad es la primera vez q escucho de este procedimiento en Ostomas!! Graciaas y espero respuesta? Desde ya agradecida!!
Hey Chris another great video, always wondered about this, kind of understood but this makes it very clear. As i have been from day 1, totally at ease with my colostomy & bags, but this is always an option for future I guess, if i fancy a change 🙂 My issue is I can't sit still for 10mins let alone an hour, always something i need to do. Great to see a post on your channel thanks
Hi. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment. As with you I have always been at ease with mine, my slow bowel transit syndrome was just getting ridiculous and I was hardly even getting to half a bag full in 10 days. So the irrigation is being used to help me empty
@@smdemmerymy mom is the same. She has to empty her bag 5-6 times a day. Her stoma randomly outputs and it's fairly watery. It does what it wants, when it wants haha
Sydney have you tried putting calamine lotion on your skin? Also coloplast makes a brave barrier sheet to put on it has hydrocolloid in it and it helps your sick soooo much! Don’t have to use a ring with it, prepskin apply the sheet and then the wafer.
Hi. I hope this ain’t a dumb question, but Do you dispose of the irrigation sleeves after each use and get a new one every day? If not, is there a sanitation procedure you employ?
Thanks for the video! Are we able to alternate days when we would 'choose' to irrigate? Or 'must' you do this process every time once you do choose irrigate? 🤔 Also.. does this cause hyperactive bowel throughout the day?
Hi. Ideally it is best to irrigate everyday around the same time. As I work shifts it’s very difficult for me to irrigate at the same time everyday. Sometimes I will do it every other day. Once I have irrigated and I don’t have any hyperactivity
Thanks for video. With slow motility you mention you experience distent bloaty tummy. Can i ask do you experience alot of gas/ distent belly ? And irrigation would push that gas backward and cause trapped gas inside the colon/ small intestine. I get crazy trapped gas when i try irrigation. Thanks
@sydneystoma385 Thanks for posting this. I have started stoma irrigation and it has made a huge difference. One thing is that my lower back muscles have been sore since I've started. Did this happen to you?
Really difficult for me to answer that, as I suffer with lower back pain all the time, I did not notice any worsening of the back pain when i started irrigation.
You can do it! It takes a bit of getting used to, and even now I sometimes cannot get the water to flow right. But i don’t get down, i just try again later on. It works out in the end!
Sir, I use skin prep, around my stomach where my appliance will be. I have extremely sensitive skin and can only use silk tape. Everything else Burns me and looks all red and irritated and skin will even pull away. Skin prep provides a barrier between your skin and the appliance, and I no longer have any blistered painful skin.
Thanks so much, but might I suggest you see a Dr for that rash. You doing s great service and I'd hate to see that get really bad. They do make a non oily steroid that could clean that up
I have had my colostomy and ostomy for 16 years but I have never irritated... Just trying it now... I'm having problems with the water flow inside my stomach can't figure it out... FYI I have stuck my finger in to feel where my "hole goes". what can I be doing wrong? When I do it more water squirts out while I am trying
It just comes down to perseverance and giving your bowels time to adapt, you might be full of poo which is stopping the flow. As each day passes more and more will go in and more poo will come out
I am having this issue too. I've found my stoma direction too, but the volume of water is not progressing. I'm thinking of trying a different time of day (in case I'm full of sh*t (LOL)) in the mornings, with the hope of transitioning to either morning or evening. Fingers crossed. Did you ever get your issue resolved?
I find it really difficult to pin point what works and what doesn’t. Sometimes some things work well and then they don’t. If I am being honest I generally just eat anything these days! 😂

It will depend on whether you are having a colostomy or ileostomy. You can only irrigate with a colostomy. Wishing you the best.

It’s similar to giving yourself an enema isn’t it except for your giving yourself an enema and your stoma instead through your rectum
Exactly that
