I loved this ride. It's the first time that I got to Platform F. Now I understand this route. I love operations and track diagrams ! Aarre Peltomaa of Mississauga, Ontario
Going East: 20:14 New west entrance to Van yard (Carlton Ave. yard mostly removed) 22:02 Old entrance to Carlton Ave. yard. Stopped being used when the LIRR got the M1s. 22:44 Old entrance to Van yard. Originally for freight until the M1s. 23:51 Tunnel turnout to BMT (?) Franklyn Avenue shuttle. Never completed when they built the tunnel in 1903. 24:38 Atlantic Ave. viaduct. Built in 1903. Rehabilitated in 1993 (painted and reinforced footings). Completely rebuilt sometime in the 2010's I believe. 27:54 Second tunnel built in 1903. 29:00 East New York. 29:20 Third tunnel built in 1939 replacing another rather short viaduct. This viaduct allowed trains to turn south and join the Bay Ridge branch. 32:25 Tunnel turnout to the old Rockaway branch. Closed in 1962. 32:37 Woodhaven Station. Closed 1976. Above this and above the street is Woodhaven Jct. Station. Closed in 1962. 35:27 Dunton Station used to be here. Closed 1939? 36:11 Van Wyck overpass. Replaced in 2020 I believe.
That video was great! I know the Atlantic Avenue Branch very well because I used to ride it almost every Wednesday. I also hope to get the chance to ride an M3 and view the ride through the front window. Also, hearing that excited little boy reminded me of when I was little and I used to ride the train with my dad.
Riding along Atlantic Ave all the way to bklyn. That’s right Tim, there was no guardrails along the tracks to nostrand ave and from nostrand ave to east ny. Welcome to my home BKLYN
I also remember those wonderful years going to the city to visiting family in the summer. I never got over the first time I saw the original Yankee Stadium from the El and ALL THAT GREEN GRASS for the first time ever! It was my vision of heaven! Many fine memories of those days. Too bad we eventually grow up and the excitement lessens. As the song goes, "those were the days!"
The side walking planks on the Atlantic Avenue viaduct were installed sometime in the 2010’s I believe. I remember taking those M3s to Brooklyn back in the 90s and early 2000s. You are correct that it looked like it flew in the air over Atlantic Avenue.
I remember a looonnngg time ago going to visit my grandparents in BedStuy and I saw a freight train on the viaduct . Weird seeing a loco on the el. It was early 50's (God I'm old)
I love that you covered this route, East New York is such a great station that is begging to be modelled in HO at some point. I figure it will be roughly 3 meters to model it to scale
Sucks they disconnected the Far Rock branch from Atlantic Terminal, and Hempstead. I think West Hempstead is the only service going there now along with the 20 minute shuttles.
Well, I look at it this way. Now Far Rockaway and Hempstead have direct train service to Manhattan all the time. Something they haven’t had. Manhattan is the draw!!
Nice job! Thanks for sharing as always. One question. At 32:25 we see two open spaces to the right. Were there formerly tracks there and if so where did they go? I've never heard of any spurs off of the Atlantic Line but those openings look convincing…
I always love your cab/front views especially because you comment informatively! I would like to know why, when leaving the Brooklyn terminal, the trains move so slow. I know there might be a swaying issue when they go faster when switching tracks because a train might hit the wall when turning, but if the train is coming from a straight track, the train should be able to go faster. Any ideas Mr. Retired Railfan Horn Guy? Thanx!
Very nice Tim. The only thing missing was radio chatter on your scanner. It couldn't have been any more annoying to people than that kid. You have more patience for kids than I do. By the way, I remember the glory days of the MP-54 cars. How unfortunate a train of them wasn't saved for fan trips and special events. If the subway guys could save those great old cars, why couldn't the LIRR and Metro NORTH have done the same. Imagine a train of open window New York Central electric MU cars whining along the Hudson Line with the spectacular views of the Hudson River up to Croton-Harmon !! All I have now are wonderful memories of it.
He was a well behaved young railfan and I’m not going to criticize his zeal in that situation!!!! If the father of the child should read this and he was a nice man, I don’t think he would be pleased. I gave him my channel name so he could watch it. I recall I was the same when I was his age. Evidently I do have more patience with kids. I’ve spent days in the Philippines with many kids who are relatives of my wife. I used to sponsor kids in that country years ago
It’s cute to have a young railfan with you. I, myself are a young railfan too!
Great job I love it 👍
Wow you really were going full speed (70) between ENY and Jamaica! Quick acceleration, too. Great video as always!

Hoping to go to Toronto this summer and I want to do a similar ride on Line 2 subway.
Excellent! Hitched one to Freeport from there on Wednesday!
That little kid and his father sound like me and my father when he'd take me on the Metro-North Harlem Line from Brewster into Grand Central.
The father was very nice, and the kid was excited, and the father, wanted my TH-cam channel to watch
I knew those tunnels all too well, Tim. So glad I don't have to ride in them anymore! 😂
😂😂😂😂
Great job I love it 👍

How cool to have a younger rail-fan alongside. I suspect that in several years he’ll find this video and realize he was in great company.
Thank you

Great run!! Sauerkraut for supper? Thanks Tim😀✋
I remember back then if you were on the street under the viaduct, you could see the bottom of the train. Very scary.
Always look forward to rides on M3s
The Atlantic branch was always my favorite part of the LIRR. My favorite part of the video though was when the train entered the station 😊
great job I love it great job 👍👏💯👍
I think that the junior railfan was a reincarnation of me 70 years ago, I needed to have my nose pressed on the front window.
great job 👍

Hello Brooklyn
I was recording the m3 in Brooklyn and Jamaica Queens I there on Thursday morning
that segment from East NY to Bolands is where it actually picks up some speed
What's happening to the old way to Atlantic Terminal Brooklyn the one where you have to cross over the tracks like track 3
The west Hempstead train still use that configuration out of Jamaica, but all the Jamaica originating trains on platform F take a different routing
@@3985uprr got it
36:49 Because the old Slow Clear on the original low home signal isn’t cool anymore 😂

To the Rockaway branch above
@@3985uprr Very interesting. As in, the Rockaway Beach Branch or the subway?
why was the tunnel connecting to Rockaway branch shut down?
The branch itself was shut down so it was no longer necessary
Was it true that Metroliner cars also sucked out MP-54 windows.
They sure did. That’s why MP54’s were fitted with aluminum window sashes to withstand that suction
@@3985uprr Thanks I read it on Wikipedia but you are the definitive source.
You think they'll ever open up that Woodside Station again if and when they reactivate the old Rockaway line?
You mean Woodhaven. Time will tell

It’s been slow like that since I was a kid. Terminal trackage
Tim, I’ve been meaning to ask and it’s likely you’ve covered it before but when and where did you serve in the military? Thanks
1970s I was in Williams Air Force Base in Arizona. The last few years I spent in the Air National Guard.

I was fanning valley stream the same day u caught this lol. Caught cannonball. What train was the return trip to Jamaica?

How can you not love the rail fan windows?
@@3985uprr AMEN TO THAT!!! 👏👏👏👏👏
@@3985uprr Well, I definitely do!
Why does bell rings while it's moving?

It’s the automatic speed control alerter for the engineer.

Doesn’t the Sauerkraut Engineer usually do diesels?
He can do anything, anytime. He does not hold a regular assignment.

That’s an engineer I know who is of German descent, and I gave him that nickname
