LIRR M3 RFW on Train

  • My Irish luck was biting hard. I was planning on taking this train into the city today for dinner and lo and behold, It had M3’s. Even my train home had M3’s but I sat that one out. It was raining even harder on the way home. The trip in had some rain, but it didn’t look too bad. This was a much speedier run than my train #167 a couple of weeks ago even though it made more stops. All stations, interlockings, signal indications are identified. Somehow I think I was able to ID all of the passing trains and there were a lot of them .

    Can't wait to ride the M9's this summer on Babylon train. After passing St. Albans station westbound, and the Old "Yellow Boston & Maine "coaches. I will see remnants of old Chock-full-O-Nuts coffee factory, now that "Prime Storage " building on the left. Great memories. Thanks for the ride....😊

    I guess I will have to live vicariously through you. My home branch rarely gets M3’s as most equipment operates Grand Central Terminal-xxx-Penn Station or vice versa.

    Nice video Tim. I rode the LIRR that day as well. I went from Grand Central terminal to Port Washington then to Woodside. Then I took the 7 train to Junction Blvd and then back to Manhattan. I see you got M3s both ways. By contrast I had newer M9s both ways on the LIRR that day. You passed through Woodside about an hour after I left.

      @mrvwbug4423 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Knowing LIRR their position based signal system is probably wayyyyy older than the color based signals. I have to wonder when LIRR does eventually switch to Amtrak style signaling will they also use ACSES on the entire network, from what I've been told that "christmas tree" right before Woodside is where LIRR enters ACSES territory and before then they just operate under ATC only.

    I often wondered what does the bell going off inside the cab of the M3 mean? I used to think it meant to slow down but noticed that it goes off even when the train is moving pretty fast and not slowing down.

    • @3985uprr
      @3985uprr  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      It usually means a train is entering a speed restriction. Also it’s an alerter to make sure the engineer is still there and he has to acknowledge it

    The LIRR M3s can’t go to Grand Central Terminal because they’re not powerful enough??? Is that why they don’t run on the Port Washington Branch anymore?? I don’t seem to see M3s on the Port Washington Branch any more. Tho I do like the M9s.

      When the M1 cars entered revenue service in 1968, the following stations were still at grade-level: Lindenhurst, Copiague, Amityville, Massapequa Park, Bellmore, and Merrick. Twenty-two grade crossings still existed; Lindenhurst, Copiague, and Amityville were elevated from 10/25/1968 to 8/7/1973 (11 eliminated), Massapequa Park was elevated from 12/21/1977 to 12/13/1980 (3 eliminated), and Bellmore & Merrick were elevated from 12/4/1970 to 6/28/1975 (8 eliminated).

    • @3985uprr

      I remember the Lindenhurst station that was temporary. It was a much easier walk from my house than the current one is it’s much further east. This is what I enjoy about the current Ronkonkoma line as it’s like what the Babylon line used to be. High speed and many crossings
