    THANK YOU for posting this video! I was given a tiller with this exact same problem and now I know exactly what needs to be done. Excellent video! Thanks for posting it! 🙏🙏🙏

    Oh the irony of finding this video 6 months after I had to rebuild my tiller and losing the position of almost all of the gear placements, since the diagram was garbage. Been watching your videos for years but thanks to TH-cam's marvelous search function, it never even showed me this video.

      I did this immediately after posting, I did it a bit differently, but had great success I think Steve nailed it. Step 1 for me was drilling a hole in the bottom, then adding a drain plug. Then as Steve suggested I drilled a hole in the top for a grease fitting. After looking at the video I assumed it would be a nightmare of crusty junk in there so I added a gallon of gas and let it drain, bunch of junk came out, then I plugged the bottom and added a quart of oil and ran it, worked better than it ever had, then I flushed the entire cavity with solvent to remove the oil, then grease fitting and dumped a bunch in there. I think Steve's solution is all that is required and its way faster than my overkill

    Good video, but for others watching, there are 3 parts that can cause this issue. The shaft you point out, the gear slide/selector, and the engagement gear getting hung on its splined shaft. I've done two of these, and both had the same symptoms, but different failures causing the issue.

    Great video and tiller looks like mine but mine locked up in neutral and I hadn't read the manual and hadn't used any grease before. First I rocked it back and forth and then took a mallet and knocked it into the other gears. Guess I was wrong because it clanged,tines kept moving but it wouldn't move. Then I bought a grease gun and spent a couple of hours trying to get a tube to go in but some came out of the gun and there is still a lot left in the tube so wonder if that sounds right.i tried to crank it and it runs in neutral but if I try to put it in gear, it won't go and sounds just like a standard transmission car when you shift without holding in the clutch. I am a senior female and wonder if it would be feasible to bring it to a repair shop because I try to do as much of the repairs and maintenance that I am able to but have attempted to on this machine and think it's just too big for me. Thanks for any suggestions.

    It took me a while to figure out the Spring and ball are in the Tiler Shift fork freezing the Shift shaft as the spring won't let the retractable ball move. That I believe is the beginning of the problem, discounting the water breach. I'm considering boring the bearing hole a bit for breathing room. The grease built up on the spring wile the bearing was stuck. Perhaps an O ring on the Shifter should be maintained

    Great video! I have a craftsman model 130202 with a 5hp B&S engine that looks really similar to your unit, do the gear boxes simply use grease? I just picked up this unit today and it makes some noise and I can't find a fill hole except for the engine, watching the video I think it uses grease instead of liquid lube like gearbox oil, again thanks and keep the videos coming!

    I'm working on a similar problem with my Sears tiller that looks much like the one you are fixing. I have it all disassembled and the problem with mine was water and dirt somehow getting into the case creating a binding situation with the shifter and the gear that moves up and down the spline. An additional problem was the Timken roller bearings at each side that were holding the spline were both frozen with dirt. When I split the case out came at least a pint of water. Thanks for your video as I was not familiar with the problem or the solution.

      Thanks for the Info Chuck! I have the same exact issue with my tiller. The gear is seized up on the spine. I currently have it soaking in degreaser with the hopes of just cleaning it. Did you need to purchase any parts or did a good cleaning resolve the issue?

    • @95982CDB
      @95982CDB 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      James Ebert I ended up purchasing new bearings as the water had caused the pin bearings to rust and seize. I think the total cost for parts from Sears was in the $150 range. When I first put it back together it still wouldn't shift properly so since I had the transmission opened up I went to plan B. I have the parts but have moved to different projects so the tiller still isn't back together.

    • @jamesebert308

    I have the exact same tiller. I've seen other videos where they remove the engine and the tines off the shaft as well. Guess that's not necessary? My shifter is stuck in neutral, the wheels roll forward and reverse about a quarter turn before hitting something that stops them, and the tines rotate freely. This all happened suddenly while I was using it. What might it be?

      @@ronbennie4686 Got to confess, I left that project in the shop and haven't been back on it. I do believe with some heat, light strikes to the shaft as a rust loosener it may come off. The other thing I will try is to drill holes in the pulley, run bolts through and then use the puller to add pressure with light taps as I turn the puller. I did put a lot of WD40 on it but I just found so many other projects to work on that tiller is just waiting. I bought 2 more tillers I need to work on. A BCS and another Craftsman just like the first. Craftsman was a Craigslist buy for $30.00! It sat in storage for a few years when they decided to empty the storage. :)

I took the transmission apart and found the chain to the wheels was broken. Simple enough fix. Cleaned it up and packed it with new grease. Got it all back together and know everything works. Unit goes forward and reverse. But know when I go to till the tines go backwards. The wheels go forward but the tines go backwards. looking at the unit from the side view the wheel turn clockwise and the tines go counter clockwise. I am thinks that maybe a gear is on backwards.
