- This time we go further into this tiller and try to solve the issue of it not rolling. Bring some gloves because it is getting greasy.

Thank you for posting this video it helped me out greatly with my repair
A few things: When you take it apart keep the deep side down and remove the thinner side. 2nd, it's a pita so take everything out and clean/inspect it all - not something you want to repeat often. The needle bearings go out on these. Replace them all. Don't lose any washers - I can't find the thin ones anywhere. The ball bearing in the shifter goes bad inspect and or replace. I agree- silicone everything on the top side to keep water out. I used about 4 lbs of lubriplate grease 01 to regressed - basically filled the bottom half of the case. On the opposite side of the gear spindle pack the hole with #2 grease to keep water and dirt away from the needle bearing. Lastly never ever wash this thing. Water always finds a way in. Use the tiller when it's not muddy and not super dusty - it'll last longer that way
Great advice. Thanks
They have to be kept inside out of the weather and lube shifter level once a month or it will freeze up
Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video. I have this same tiller. It has started on the first pull every year for 20 years. Now I know how to take it apart to fix it. I believe the bearings for the tine shaft are worn. Wish me luck. Thanks again
Great job on your videos Timothy. Too many folks waste a lot of time talking and showing long boring steps. Your video moved along nicely and I watch both parts. I got the same tiller when I bought my house last fall, (it was left behind). Starts, but stuck in nuetral. Tore it down to the frame/trany yesterday. I'll crack it open today with more confidence thanks to you.
Good job, man. A lot of people would have tapped out way earlier. Hope it last you a long, long time.
Ok, loved these two videos. I have the same tiller. Transmission went under warranty and was replaced. It has gone again and acts the same as yours. Will not move but tines will.
Hopefully it won't be too much problem to fix.
Chain is broken
Nice tiller, you'll have a great time scraping that out. (note the sarcasm) I RTV'd it back together instead of buying a gasket if it helps.
Thanks for a great video. I am working on one of these, and all the helpful tips are much appreciated. Please be sure to wear your safety glasses when grinding..... ( because we care about ya...) ......
Have the exact tiller. Mine locked up today so I hope it is also just the chain inside. FYI…..I bought a new carb for mine on Amazon for 16 bucks…..started on the 2nd pull. Great video!!
Great job I appreciate your help and hope that I can Duplicate all that you’ve done thanks brother
Gotta say, dude, I'm impressed.
For sure before you try to separate the case polish and buff the shafts extremely good and rust free or its hell
I have the same tiller. Tires are locked. Move just a bit like yours where can I buy the seal and chain. Thanks for any help
That was really helpful... I've just started trying to fix things and I'm pretty clueless, so this was clear, and the video was good..now I'll go see what I can do with my Briggs and Stratton tiller... thank you
Good luck! Check out the "cars and small engines" Playlist for more fixes. Thanks.
Dude was getting rid of one of these today but it’s gray not green. Not sure if it runs but wasn’t locked up and wheels spin freely. I figure I’ll tinker with it and try to make a little cash. Nice video bud
Working on mine now. Rebuilding the gear case is better done in the other case half as the larger gears will drop in first and not hide the complete mechanism when all the parts are back in. It's easier to test too because the shifter is in the other half. Have to admit, no matter what you do or how you do it , it's one big hemorrhoid!! Good luck to anyone who's attempting it.
Yeah it was quite the chore to get it done.
I really want to Thank you for the Video. I just bought the exact Tiller. I was wondering about greasing the Gearbox. The Guy I bought it from bought it New and kept it in the shed. I like watching videos about the things I own though because I also will try to fix myself. I'm going to take the Carburetor off now and clean it because he ran ethenol gas in it and it surge's. Thanks again GREAT JOB.
Good job on the tiller! Richening the mixture a bit should get rid of the surging or hunting.
Simple fix just a new belt n sold it. Guy loves it!
Hey Timothy, I happened to find your vlog. Great job. I just bought a Craftsman tiller, used, yesterday. Only runs in forward. Looks like I will be doing the very same thing that you have done. Great teaching video. Thank you so much. P.S. I watched both part 1 and part 2. Keep up the great work. I am subscribed too.
Cheers for part 2!
Great video work and great job. I have a 1991 mtd that I will being this same repair.
Awesome, thanks for video. Now to tear mine apart... :)
I just got one of these yesterday at the dump for free. It’s not running yet but I watched both videos on yours. My question is mine freewheels, not running, in forward, forward with till and in reverse. Does this mean I automatically have transmission problems?
I think we both had that relieved look on our faces when it started and the tines started rotating correctly. Whew... great job. Idk how you did all that work without cussing at least a few times. Or maybe those got edited out...lol fyi,I've found out that owning a tiller is like owning a pick-up truck, friends want to borrow it for their landscape project, like they call you to help them move. Anyways thanks for sharing and stay safe out there...
Haha, I have witnessed the borrowing aspect. Thanks for checking it out.
I just had one of these rototillers given to me and the wheels only move a few feet and lock up. I definitely want to fix it and get it up and running
Timothy DC... I'd recommend to use Emory cloth to clean up the shafts for both wheels. The wheels should slide on the shaft without needing the use of a beating tool (Hammer). I'd flush out fuel system, install new carburetor, fuel supply line with clamp. The hunting of the engine can be adjusted to run smoother.
Hey, great video. Just saw it today(9/30/2024) How much total hour time did you end up putting into the entire project??
do you even have to take the wheels off to open up the gear box? I have that exact tiller. my shifter is stuck. Wheels turn freely.
Yes, wheels and tines must be removed to open the case. The shifter issue is most likely a rusted input shaft, where it passes thru the case.
Awesome 👍!
I have the same tiller with the same problem. Winter project. I don’t understand why you wouldn’t take an extra thirty or forty minutes to clean it up inside the case. That’s just wrong lol. Havagudun and good luck.
great job now I need to get mine done. mine stuck and won't shift its stuck. hopefully I can get mine apart and back together like you did. once again great job with the video! wish me luck I paid 800.00 for mine new a used it one summer. its been under house for about 5 years. now I have a work shop and a place to take it apart. wish me luck!
Good luck on getting it going.
These tillers are a nightmare to work on. The tine drive chain (#50 - 25 links) will stretch out and slip after hard usage. I would replace both chains just to save you time in the future. while you have the case cracked.
I for sure agree because I learned the hard way on two of them under warranty
I thought you did great. I wish I knew what you do.
Where is the spark plug located? I just bought one for 350. I may need to replace plug
Hi you wouldn't remember the model number to that plow would you I have one like it the numbers are gone I need to order some tines for it
Where can I find the chain and the gasket?
What size is this chain
Thank you for the video. My tines don't spin it will go forward and reverse but when I try to put it in to forward with tines they don't spin .I feel thet the indicator lever is going down not hiting the gear.Any sugestions?
mine just stopped moving forward and reverse. tines still spin. did your tines still spin when the chain broke?
Yes evwrything still worked as usual, but just wouldnt drive in either direction.
These tillers can be serviced, but we’re not meant to be serviced. Splitting the case and taking it completely apart, to say replace tine bearings, is not a serviceable unit. $400 plus dollars for a $700 tiller.
In the real world... we fix this stuff cause it's fun, and can't afford to drop $700+ on a new one.
It cost me 100.00 for parts and 80 for grease. Should be about like new. The 97 had a great motor.
I have a Craftsman model 917, looks almost identical to this one. I'm trying to get the left wheel off. I can see 2 holes on the shaft of yours. I know the front hole is for a pin and clip. Is there a hidden pin on the rear hole?? I can't get the wheel off if my life depended on it!!
Like a riding lawnmower
Drill to holes in wheel and use a puller with long bolts and nuts
do you have any tips on how to remember the sequence of re-assembly ?
Reassembled transmission case but is there any info on how freely the gears should turn?
Not that I have found
Tim, I have an older Craftsman Rear tine. All works fine except when you start to till. It tills a minute or so the the tines stop turning. You can still drive it around but; the tines won't start again till you stop and reengage the dead-man handle. Then it digs for a minute or so...then the tines stop again. Any thoughts? I don't have any history on this I just bought this 2nd hand from a guy who fixes and sells.
Does it bog down or anything? Will it do it if you lift the tines off the ground and till with nothing under it?
No it doesn't bog down but I think I found out sort of what's going on. As I was messing with it today I happened to notice that the gear shift selector was moving to a position partly between T and F...there by knocking the tines out. I could see that the cotter pin was touching the fly wheel that the belt runs on. I reposition the pin and I may have solved the problem. Thanks for responding so quick. Garry
Glad to hear you got it fix and nice troubleshooting
If there's anyone in the future who is wondering if their Husqvarna 700DRT tiller is the same as this craftsman, it basically is. The gear selector is a common problem with those, I have mine tore apart right now. And the main gasket will tear just as soon as look at it
I have a Yard Machines bought it used not shure what year or model
Please use eye protection you only have two
Amen 🙏
Please start warning safety glasses before it happens and it can’t be fixed once it’s done
✅
just like my tiller. where to buy gasket n what number roller chain from tsc plz, ty. great video! from burna, ky
Thomas: Just enter Model # online and info will come. My tiller is just like this one that is being worked on. My tiller is a Craftsman 6.5 HP Rear Tine Tiller Model # 917.294482 Transmission Roller Chain is 106147X. Tiller Gear Case Gasket 161963 - Cost @ $21. Not too hard to obtain.
Silicone it is better and keeps moisture out kinda
Keep it out of the weather for sure
@21:42 where did that part go flying off to? And what was that?
That was the carb that rattled loose. It wasn't bolted on yet.
@@ASliceofWoodWorkshop If you watch close, there is a little piece of something that launches out of frame. Was thinking it was a part of the air cleaner assembly. Thats always my luck, something falls a foot and breaks into 5 pieces. lol Slow the video and watch that part again.
That fuel fitting on the carb can be replaced. No need to replace the carb. Check out Taryl Fixes All channel. He has a video that shows how to replace those fittings on both Briggs and Tecumseh carbs. It’s not any harder than the work you’ve done so far.
Yeah I found out they are very easy to replace and, best part, you can buy them in bulk for future projects
I have the same mechine and it doesn’t roll where can i get the parts or how can I fix it
Partsreplacement.com, Amazon, ebay
Están laqueadas las llantas
Can you tell me how the handle is set up
What part are you looking for?
To the tiller I got the tiller together and I clicked here thinking i can look at the handle but I didn't see a very good veiw
The handle goes to the belt that drives all the pulleys. The tilt forward neutral and reverse should have a rod that connects to the transmission shifter and the fast/stop has a cable that goes to the right side of the motor on the throttle control. Does that help at all?
Yes thank you very much
I have the same tiller but my problem is the tines won’t turn and the transmission works great anyone know what it could be ?
Broken #50 chain that drives the tines. Mine did it too.
