How I Fixed an MTD Rear Tine Tiller Gearbox!

- Step by step tutorial. This MTD Yardmaster rear tine rototiller had been outside for 8 years and was completely seized. I'll take you through disassembling, diagnosing and fixing the rusted components to make it run again. This project is well within the skills of the average DIY mechanic, but it takes some patience and time to get it done.

Thank you. Your video helped me to verify that popping the case off wasn’t going to cause an indecipherable disarray of gears and chains. Everything stays where it was supposed to be except a couple of thrust washers.

Looks very similar to my craftsman model 917, 850 series. Wish mine had that style of tines.

Great video - really demystifies the process. Two things: What do you think it could be if the transmission shifts properly to get the tines moving (F and R) but the wheels don't move and in fact seized with a far amount of play back and forth? Next thing: If I had a father-in-law like you I just might have stayed married 🤣🤣
I would look at the bushings, they are a common wear point. , Also, look to see if all the gearing is okay. You’ll have to open it up to see.

Thanks so much for the video. I am using it to put mine back together. I had to have my wife double check with me, but was the sized gear put in upside down during re assembly in your video. It look like it came out short gear side down but re assembly you had short gear side up. just double checking because we are about to put ours together and wanted to double check. Thanks!
Wow! good eye. I guess it was! Truthfully, I'm really new to video recording and did multiple takes of assembling it. I know that I double checked everything against the part diagram I downloaded before reassembling for the final time. Plus, it works perfectly, so it must be in there correctly now!
@@jasonselinger It must have ended up correctly at the end. That looks like it would be an important gear. Thanks again for your video. It has helped us a ton on our reassemble. It's not the exact model but when my dad bought it he never put the model numbers on it so we could never find a diagram. Just got ours up and running today. We had a broken chain.
If you get a stuck one like this;;; check for play in the tine shaft! If bearings and shaft are wore out;; it will make a horrible chattering noise when tines are engaged!
Great video but once back together, tines not working. Any idea. Guessing something within gear box but any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
I have one that the chain is broken and I’m going to fix it this winter because I’m too busy now and so much to get fixed for customers

I've got a very similar machine it's a CRT RALLY 5.5hp.
And the gearbox appears to be stuck in gear.
I'm hoping to follow your video to see if it helps.
Have you any advice.
Oh by the way my throttle/choke cable has snapped how or where do I buy replacements.
I'm not mechanically knowledgeable so you will prob say any cable will work.
But I only know by replacing what like for like as I wouldn't know anything different.
Any advice would be much appreciated though.

Hi Jason, I just picked up this exact same tiller used for a good price and looks to be in good shape. Needs basic stuff like carb went through to get it running. One question though, while not running if you put it in N it rolls good. It will also shift into all selector positions with ease. However, when put in F or R you cannot roll it at all. I had a old craftsman that when in F or R and not running it would still roll but with a lot of resistance as you would expect if it was in gear and not running. With this one not rolling at all, it makes me worried the drive gears are seized or something. Is this normal for this model? Would hate to put all the time into the carb and tune up to get it running, while finding out that the drive is seized up....
When you pressure wash the gears box make sure your away from everything. Lololo 😅
This is the exact gear box that the Cub Cadet RT 65 Tiller has.
It looks most of the tillers froths era use the same gear box, they certainly seem to have the same problem!
Been a while I know but any chance you still have this tiller? Was wondering if you could shoot me some measurements of the depth bar. I need to make one for mine and do t wanna pay $70 for a replacement lol

Is it worth trying penetrating oil before taking it all apart?
No, I can't see how. The portion of the shaft that is binding is not really accessible unless you split the case. Plus, at least in my case, the corrosion was beyond what a penetrating oil would be able to loosen.
I’ll be shocked if you respond , but can you tell me what model this is - specifically I have a husky version that seems to be the same era but can’t seem to find the right part number for the clutch cable that triggers the pulley to tighten - so a clutch cable model number or just length of cable would be helpful! Thanks for the video
There's no ID plate on my machine, but I determined by a short piece of trial and error google searching that it is an MTD Model 454. I don't really much about Husky tillers, but I'd bet that any tiller of this design will work in much the same way. For your clutch cable, I'd take your one into any farm equipment or industrial dealer with a decent parts counter and see if you get a generic cable, or something similar from another manufacturer. With a little creativity, you'll figure it out.
To bad there isn’t a engineered way to remove those dammed wheels. When they are seized there isn’t a puller that’s in most homes tool box. The wheel has no efficient design that allows a normal two or three jaw puller to be used.
If you have access to a torch, heat the hubs. I just freed the wheels on mine - started heating on the inboard side of the wheel till the hub just started to become a dull red and then applied candle wax to wick in. Took a couple of tries till I was able to get some motion and kept working at it and finally the wheels were freely spinning on the axle shaft. Wheel never got hot enough to scorch the paint on the outboard side.
