Thank you so much Austin I’m 16 and I am gonna be a pipeline welder and I got my Wendy’s pancake hood a week ago I messed up my lens box sanding the first time and I ordered a new one and watched this video and it helped so much thank you
Yo Austin, i just wanna thank you so much for making this video.... i bought my first pancake hood a couple weeks back as a helper my welder is finally showing me some basics... i messed up my first hood by sanding way too much!!!! So i bought another hood. An this video help me get the perfect fit on my second one... its still tight around my nose but there is no light coming through an im afraid to sand more from the nose because i dont wanna lose my fit... lol but thank you again for making this video as it is the only one only or that i was able to find anywhere that actually explains how to fit it in detail... plz keep em coming
Haven’t sanded yet Ross I actually just got my first ‘pancake’ hood! It felt very uncomfortable I loosened the band nearly all the way thinking that was why, then I showed a buddy and first thing he asks “haven’t you sanded it” haha had to search for a video. Thanks boss man!
I sanded mine THEN watched the video. Stole some dark makeup powder and used it like spotting blue. I think your method is more practical with the added bonus of not looking like a nutter in the process
I just got my new Wendy's light weight pancake and... I LOVE IT!!! My old one was made from F.R.P. fiberglass reinforced plywood, And A. it was about 35yrs old and in pretty rough shape. And B. It was really heavy. Stay safe my brother! ;)
Hey Austin I applied for the 798 union and put in my pre qualification application in. It says it’s accepted but I was wondering if you could do a video on how that process of getting into a union goes down. Love the videos!
Yes, I own a wendys pc. Sanded it to fit my face, was close fit from mfg. I got the larger lense box for my cheater lens. Just fits. As I use a glass cover lense, glass shade lense the weight is a tad heavy. I am a retired millwright and found the pancake very useful and versitile on various projects. Stay safe out there, thanks Austin.
I bought a CMR out of one of their first batches of hood's. I also purchased their hood holder they offer that keeps it up out of the seat so it doesn't get sat on. I love it and would recommend it to other's.
When you said the part about 'plan your work and work the plan', it reminded me of this time I was in orientation for a trucking company. They had me help out with getting a 26' wide load to a brewery in Chicago. They had a plan and an ETA of the load to the customer. I thought I had at least a half hour to arrival, so I went to the restaurant inside the brewery and ordered a burger n fries to go. Yup. You guessed it. I was waiting for my food when a guy came up telling me I had to move my truck because the load was here. WTF‽ A half hour plus ahead of schedule in Chicago area traffic??
Hey Austin , First one I did was my original pancake.I screwed it up the first time because sanded to much.Had to order another box and done it better.Did my sargs perfect, now I have to get me one like yours!
Years ago, I when I was working as a "Roust-a-Bout" in the "Teapot-Dome" Oil Field in "Midwest/Edgerton", Wyoming, I made my own pancake helmet from a piece of 1/8th inch thick plywood paneling, and a rubberized single lens oxyacetylene eye-shield, both of which I had lying around my shop. After mounting the two together, I simply replaced the oxyacetylene lens with a #11 Stick welder lens. The total cost? An hours worth of labor or less. How long did it last? Well, that was back in the early 1990's, and I think I finally gave it to one of my neighbors here a couple of years ago, unless it is still in a box since I got my Auto-Darkening Sugar scoop about that time a couple of years ago. Did I like it? Absolutely, even though it was a home-made DIY pancake, I still think it was better than my new Auto-Darkening Sugar Scoop. If I could do it and make a home-made one and get it to work all those years, why should I buy one. But, of course I've always been a MacGyver all my life anyway, If I can, I prefer having the fun of building rather than buying, it's both cheaper, and more fun.
It's like you read my mind. I've been looking for a good pancake hood for a while now and the other brand you recommend from Midland I guess is closed. Thanks for the video now I know which one to get.
Here's a tip that really helped me get a perfect fit the first time. Take a piece of solder wire and press it to your forehead. Carefully pull it away and draw the outline on the top part of the wood eye piece. Then do the same thing on the bottom to get the contour of your cheek bones and nose. Use a Dremel and a sanding drum to remove the wood. It worked perfectly for me. Zero outside light gets in around the goggle piece and it's very comfortable.
I have a CMR hood from Mike Roberts I had custom made. It looks like a waffle! They can put anything you can dream up on them. I've seen Copenhagen cans to Confederate flags. Don't use a dremmel! You can't go back in time! I have every hood made. Including a Fenton. CMR Fab are new in the game but Mike is a Pipeline welder and knows what we need. He also makes a pancake holder so you helper can't sit on it! I love your videos. Maybe we will brother in law someday hand.
it helps to put the hood on and then have a buddy etc. take a pencil and trace/scribe around your forehead and mark on the balsa where material needs to be removed/high spots/pressure points. it goes way faster that way.
I've never worn a pancake hood... I'm currently wearing a Lincoln. I get so tired of the glare coming in from the back you really have me wanting a pancake.
Have you ever used a variable shade lens in a pancake or a sugar scoop just wandering how they perform and how they adjust with a clear lens on the back side of them where the controls are at.
I have a question, I use a Sarge's, do you take off the inner sides of the box? I wear glasses and it's a bad fit with new glasses. I notice that on some of your hood boxes these two pieces are not there. Thank you for the great videos. God Bless You!!
How about tracing your favorite hood with a paper then moving to the new one to give you some idea what needs to be removed Like a pipe saddle template
Hey Austin, you should check out bledsloe welding hoods on Facebook. They’re the closest thing to a Fenton out there, you should check them out. Happy Friday!
Maybe I’m weird but I took a piece of baler wire and bent it to fit my forehead and centered it and traced it out onto the top of the eye box to rough out a lot of the material, I have a big head and my pancake came sized for a newborn. I did the bottom last, the nose takes me forever to get just right
I haven’t used it much yet. When I’m workin on structural stuff around the house I tend to use my sugar scoop. But just by the way it’s built I’m sure it will hold up good. And it’s light weight. I’d go with the cmr just for that reason. The Wendy’s is like 16 ounces I think, and the cmr is around 10 ounces. Depending on which one you get.
Hey, one thing I've been wondering, is why people use welding hoods that don't auto-darken. The only advantage I see in hoods like your pancake good is that sparks don't fall on your face as much. Is there any other reason a standard good would be preferable over an auto-darkening hood? I personally don't think I can weld without an auto darkening one
A lot of people run auto darkening 2”x4” lenses in these hoods. The downside of that is sensor/electronic failure. The upside of running a passive lens is that it will never fail you.
I am new to welding and was curious about the materials your pancake hoods are made of. Being that they are carbon fiber and that material has conductive properties, is that an issue or should I not be worried about that? Also, in your experience do employers require the lenses used in the helmets be ANSI approved and does OSHA have a say into the type of hood one would use?
Yes, on the website you will find the following information- "WARNING! This is a Carbon Fiber Welding Hood. Carbon is a conductor of electricity. When using DO NOT allow the Welding Hood to make simultaneous contact with the stinger and material your ground lead is place on. Doing so could result in electrical shock, burns or eye injury."
I know that I’m a little late but I just bought my first pancake good and was wondering if they always push your nose in or if you can sand it so it doesn’t do that?
Put a piece of duct tape on the front to check for gaps. You can’t see anything through it and your not pushing it against your face when checking for light.
I myself use the Wendy’s mini. I was looking up this CMR mini. It looks like the side panel is a lot longer than that of Wendy’s. Is this true or just how it looks in the website? I get into a lot of tight places and don’t need that side panel to be Excessive
I just got my first pancake hood from cmr and I got the top fitted but when I put the hood on I can see a lot of space around my nose area, does this mean I need to take more off the sides so my face can sink into the face plate?
Ya i teach welding at a college and they definitely preach that in the book. But i worked with a welder that used oxygen to air up his tire if it got low on the job.
Never had to sand a hood (i'm just a hobby welder with an auto-dark), but taking a tip from woodworking i suggest using a strip of carbon paper between your face and the box. It will leave dark spots on the wood anywhere there's a pressure point, making it easier to know where to sand. Just be sure that you have the 'dirty' side of that paper toward the box :D And since carbon paper is not very popular any more, you can get away with rubbing a pencil or a piece of chalk on some tape, then sticking it to your face for the same effect.
I just finished fitting my pancake. I used an electric Dremel on a very low gear and took my sweet time. Worked awesome.
Thank you so much Austin I’m 16 and I am gonna be a pipeline welder and I got my Wendy’s pancake hood a week ago I messed up my lens box sanding the first time and I ordered a new one and watched this video and it helped so much thank you

Happy Friday Austin! Getting my first welder today!
Which one did you get?
Bill Cyrus Lincoln tombstone. I’m just getting into welding
@@pete389man8 Ah, precisely how i started as well, and probably at least half of everyone does. Great first machine, will do a lot.
Bill Cyrus yeah I love it.

This really helped, cause I bought a brand new pancake and had no idea what to do
Hey Austin I applied for the 798 union and put in my pre qualification application in. It says it’s accepted but I was wondering if you could do a video on how that process of getting into a union goes down. Love the videos!
He never respond right?
Interested in this video!
Every local is different
Yes always used sand paper all the way and wrapped sand paper around a paint pen or sharpie to round the nose
I’ve fit several hoods and I always used polyurethane on the wood when I got it fitting the way I liked it makes it last longer
Been watching you since the beginning. You're getting better and better on your editing skills

Hell's bells I had no idea. Love the goggle effect of blocking out backlighting--add a cheater and an auto-shade and I think this is the hood for me.
Very good loved it. I just use sandpaper the whole time. Great one Austin
I see a collaboration video in the future with Wally and Austin 👍😀🙌 🎉!!!
@@wadewittman8510 you know it

Makes sense. I’ve done a couple can’t be too aggressive and takes time. Love pancakes
I never used nor fit-sanded a pancacke hood, but I really laught about doing things with "vanesse", great how to, very fun to watch! Thumbs up!
I fit my first pancake after watching this video. Very helpful 🤙
Happy friday bud! Thanks for the video it was really helpful! The weld professor (wally) sent me god bless & take care! 👍🏻
It's nice to see ya smiling like a big old teddy bear, doing what you 're doing.
Great video buddy! Yeah I've sanded on a Wendy's hood. Thanks CMR 👍

Very helpful video Austin, thanks for sharing with us.
wondering what your thoughts are on using pancake indoors mig welding
Hey Austin ,
First one I did was my original pancake.I screwed it up the first time because sanded to much.Had to order another box and done it better.Did my sargs perfect, now I have to get me one like yours!
More than I care to count. Fixing to have to do one of these CMR hoods soon.
I have never used pancake but I want to :)
if you want to use safety glasses and or have glasses, then this aint for you. wont fit
@@Mikey-ym6ok fit the lense inside the box . Miller has a 1.25 to 4 diopter 2x4" insert for about 12.00.
I use 2.5 diopter magnification
really enjoy your videos fitting my last hood i held my phone over top took picture helped to see the gaps
I had to get down on mine as well. I love it. Great video
I haven't sanded a pancake hood yet but I will be once my new hood comes in the mail.
I'm a Wendy's guy. Have two. One left, one right. Love them dearly!
I’ve sanded 2! Always had my doubts about pancakes, until I tried one! Won’t use anything else!

Made a useful one with the Harbor Freight welding goggles and #10 glass insert also I used light wood.

Just about 3 weeks ago still need some work out some electrical tape around the edges. I still need some work on it though thanks for the tips
You bet. What good did you get?
I've never worn a pancake hood... I'm currently wearing a Lincoln. I get so tired of the glare coming in from the back you really have me wanting a pancake.
For the ultimate test, can you mount a coffee cup holder on the side?
Just see you a few hours ago at the intersection of Linwood and Highway 33.
A good tip that I’ve used is to put some foam on the parts that touch your face to make it more comfortable
Bledsoe welding hoods make a real similar Steve Fenton pancake
I never sand with my fingers just like that, always put on at least gloves or apply the paper on leather.
The heat from sanding gives me blisters xD

Got my CMR light weight mini a few months back, great hood!!!!
Great vid!
Good day where can I get these weldin pancakes and what does It come with
You should try an outlaw leather hood Austin
sold out.
Shit i cant afford a pancake to fit. My damn welder just broke so im savin up for a new one
So what's the upside to a pancake over a regular hood
Keeps out back light. Light weight. Keeps dust and sparks out of the eyes better. A little bit cooler.
What did you do for your glasses?
Yeah I’ve only sanded one. It was and still is my favorite hood, but unfortunately you can’t use them in power plants. So sugar scoop it is.
I suppose you could also throw a contour gauge against your forehead then transfer that pattern onto the wood ?
Does the hood warp overtime with the heat
I use a dremel or a end grinder with a sanding bit
What kind of glasses are those? It’s annoying for me take off my pancake to put on my safety glasses back and fort

3m 3502 mask can be used with pancake welding.
One last question, do you use a fixed or auto lens in your pancake hood?
Either can be used. Cheaters too of course.
I am new to welding and was curious about the materials your pancake hoods are made of. Hey Austin can you fit a respirator from 3M under it?
On your forehead with mine I put it on and took a pencil and held it around my forehead and marked it perfectly the first time
I know that I’m a little late but I just bought my first pancake good and was wondering if they always push your nose in or if you can sand it so it doesn’t do that?
Got the same question here
Did u figured it out, im having the same issue?
I use a really sharp angle knife called a skewer
Can you wear pancakes hood with hard hats?
What lens did you get
Put a piece of duct tape on the front to check for gaps. You can’t see anything through it and your not pushing it against your face when checking for light.
But where can I get the wooden portion????
Where did you find that awesome one!😳👍👍😃🇺🇸
i know im watching a good video when gf walks and in says "what the hell kind of welding shield is that?" lol
Is that a right handed hood? Need to order one
I’m like the original super lightweight
I use a sarges love it
how about using a conture guage?
Which do you prefer shade 10 or 11?
I myself use the Wendy’s mini.
I was looking up this CMR mini. It looks like the side panel is a lot longer than that of Wendy’s. Is this true or just how it looks in the website?
I get into a lot of tight places and don’t need that side panel to be Excessive

Only if you plan on welding upside down lol, you should be perfectly fine
I'm in school for welding and the first thing I learned was to never use compressed oxygen as a replacement to compressed air
Oh you know where the pressure is…
awesome video
Can you fit one respirator from 3M under it?
I got my first pancake yesterday and I sanded it down underneath my eyes too much, should I leave it or put something there to try and fix it?
If it’s letting too much light in I’d try to fix it. If not, I’d roll with it
The balsa wood on the side is going to interfere with wearing your hoodie in the cold. Probably going to have to do something with that wood gusset.
What website did you get that hood from?
Do the cmr pancakes come with lenses?
No they dont
What is another good pancake that comes with lenses?
I don’t know of any pancake that comes with a lens
