In this video, I’m showing you who makes the lightest lightweight pancake welding hood. If you don’t know me I’m Austin Ross a pipeline welder and TH-camr. I’m passionate about helping other pipeline welders, pipeliner, and rig welders.
I’ve used a variety of pancake welding hoods through the years and have always loved a pancake hood that’s light and comfortable. The Empyre South hood was the first carbon fiber welding hood I tried and it was closest in weight to one I’ve loved for years made by Steve Fenton. The carbon fiber pancake welding hood has some downsides but it’s the lightest on the market today. But who makes the lightest? You will have to watch the video to find out. Is it the CMR welding hood? Empyre South?
Most people expect us to wear pipeliner hood when we are pipeline welding but most of us wear a pancake welding hood with auto darkening lens or fixed lens.

I wish I could shake your hand! You have no idea how much this channel has impacted me and motivated me..I am lucky enough my school offers college classes that count for highschool credits and college credits so I get to knock two birds with one stone. I will be graduating in May with my highschool diploma welding certificate and associates degree! I can’t wait to get out in the field and hearing all of your experiences and how you have overcame them really truly does help the younger generation up and coming... thank you for the hard work and time you put in both on the pipeline and on the channel!
I have a sugar scoop cut down its not too bad. Id be interested in seeing a 12/12 branch tutorial layout weld and fit up or something similar!

Bought a Miller trailblazer not too long ago, but...recently switched to a Lincoln sae 200, refurbished unit and I love it better. I use an auto darkening at 10-10.5.

I love my sugar scoop. I also have an optrel, and an old huntsman with a cheater lens that I tig weld with.
@GR45 I broke down last year and got a 3M 9100xxi. It’s a pretty penny but I’ll never run an optrel again

new to your channel and watching a lot of you, you and your wifes videos. i am a structural steel welder and been wanting to expand my skills as a welder. i do have a question or request for some videos. have you made any videos on welding tips for pipe or can you make some. i remember you said that you learned alot from the old timers on the job and that kind of stuff you can't learn in school.
I've only welded with more modern hoods, but I'm considering a pancake to switch it up. I have a 3m speedglas 9100fx.
I'm not a pipeliner but I do prefer the Old Sugar scoop I guess it's because that's what my granddad used when he was a general welder and I am currently still using the one he gave me before he passed away little sentiment there but I certainly do like that CMR ultralight and my neck is starting to give me problems I may try that

I do have one question, I’m really wanting to teach myself how to weld and grind but I’m kind of clueless on what machine to start with? Try a Ronald johnson hood. He is a 798 welder they call him “slick”. He is from south Louisiana. Really nice hood and extremely light hood!!
I use the original pancake with auto dark lense, a sugar scoop and if structural or in shop I wear a weld Cote metals true veiw ultra light nice headgear light weight and really like the true color lenses

Can anyone put me in contact with someone I can possibly buy some 18”-24” pipe to make some troughs with. Any help would be appreciated!
You might check a scrap yard or a local welding/ fabricating shop. If they have a roller they can roll you some plate for that type of thing. You could always keep your eyes out for farm auctions. They might have stuff like that.

Wouldn’t hurt. It’s a great place to start getting welding experience. Good way to meet people also. Check out western welding academy in Wyoming and kwi. Both really good welding schools.

Need a PhD to figure out what to buy. Holy crap. What the hell is a "flip" (on Original's web pages). Are the flip ups just an accessory or something you MUST to buy separately. Wendy's web site is simply the worst; it's a salad of parts and accessories; got a seriously lazy webmaster!
