@@TheCgOrion No, but if Skylake had had the eDRAM the precedent would have really been set that it's needed for gaming performance. That would have sped-up the introduction of large caches.

That experimental chart was just what I was thinking of: could you add to your website something that allows people to input the prices they have access to and outputs the price-equivalent values? It would make the data you produce relevant basically forever
@@GamersNexus You could also make it a graph. That way, you just need to look at where the lines cross and don't need to enter prices. Basically, make the y-axis dollars per unit of performance (relative to the 9800x3D), and the x-axis the price for the 7800x3D. If you want to do multiple games at the same time, you just draw multiple lines in different colors. This even accounts for different 9800x3D prices, since any given price has its own constant y-value that you can simply mark on the y-axis.
It may have to note “performance figures as of x”, as drivers, operating systems, and GN’s test methodologies evolve over time… keeping performance figures current, I could see just not being worth the effort after a period of time

@@aule10 "CPU Bottlenecking" - huh? That's on a GPU side, lol. That's also why a CPU should be tested on 1080p to show its raw performance, how many frames it can really compute, without being limited by a GPU.
@@whatthepeople And why should it? If you test a CPU in a inviroment that not many people use it is only theoretic. Meaning yes it's the best 1080p gaming cpu, but if it is maxing out already there, then you will need more power if you play in 1440p meaning it would be another CPU that would do a better job, and then it's no longer the fastest CPU, because it cant handle all the data the GPU is sending its way. At the very least he should mention this, or else it is very disingenuous.
Thank you GN for the power efficiency testing. I've always considered this to be the only meaningful measure of cpu/gpu progress and have always had to roughly calculate it based on the not very reliable tdp numbers to judge if an upgrade is an upgrade in actual compute performance or just a not very helpful upgrade in my rooms electric heating.
Keep in mind this is a release review, they didn't have time to go HAM yet. People have spotted supposed benchmarks running at 5.46 Ghz so I'm curious how far you can push this chip. Looking forward to the OC stream!
You need to include 1440p and 4k benchmarks because it will give those users more useful data for performance they can expect. By all means include 1080p benchmarks, but these are almost synthetic now. If for example a game at 1440p or 4k shows there's no improvement upgrading a cpu, then a potential buyer should know that.
Unfortunately, by very deliberately excluding real-world 1440p and 4K testing, Gamers Nesus and others (e.g. HUB) are a laughing stock of the scientific community. More damningly, they are obviously being paid to mislead the unaware(!!) into buying a CPU that would make ZERO difference in their real-world set ups. They know that >99% of ALL top end CPU buyer's game at >1080p, rendering this data meaningless for them.
@@Exiztential As a scientist myself, 'real-world' data forms the core of our doctrine. Exclude real world data and your conclusions are meaningless. What is being asked for here is to put this new top of the line gaming CPU into context with what, clearly, the majority of its buyers would be using i.e. 1440p and 4K. That means, keep the low res benchmarks, but include the higher resolution data as well. That's crucial if you are to not mislead buyers into a purchase they shouldn't be making!
@@ChrisM541 Time is money, they are also a business. Running CPU benchmarks at 1080p makes the most sense because it removes the GPU from the equation. X3D is going down as a legendary technology for gaming CPUs. It's quite impressive stuff, and the power usage is just icing on the cake.
Imagine if Intel had given Skylake the eDRAM cache of Broadwell (which Skylake supported). Peter Bright of Ars wrote a good article condemning Intel for withholding it simply because AMD wasn't competing enough to pressure the company into making a much better part.
@syrinx9196 The decade of quad core stagnation wasn't great either.
@@TheCgOrion No, but if Skylake had had the eDRAM the precedent would have really been set that it's needed for gaming performance. That would have sped-up the introduction of large caches.
@syrinx9196 Oh, for sure, and there was evidence of it for many generations. Remember the Extreme Editions for the Pentium line, that had large caches? Not that their biggest bottleneck was the cache.
Intel deserves this smackdown. Intel not being able to compete is very worrisome for the long run though.

Oh my, def game changer!

@@NJ-wb1cz I went from 27 to 37x to 58x3d all on the same mobo, so if am5 is around the same amount of time... A 98x3d now could probably be upgraded twice more before a new mobo is needed. I really like this cadence.
@@HMarcBower I doubt there will be a reason to ever upgrade 9800x3d for gaming, but who knows. Given how the progress noticeably slows down, wouldn't be surprise if it will be fine even in 10 years

Loved Steve's attempt at sporting analogies lol

I like the idea of the variable price plots. I'll often use your reviews to determine what is a "good value" but it's sometimes hard to extrapolate the value to new prices from when the review was posted. This plot gives me more of a sense of how the value changes as competing prices change.
what a time to be alive. Thanks, Steve.
My cat dice are ordered. If only snowy would high five my box! Is something I never saw myself saying but hey, now we're here!
I'm happy you tested randomness on your dice... my first thought was... that component inside is going to skew the weight and probabilities... :)
Still sitting on my 5800x3d but may consider upgrading now. Thanks, Theodore!
Great stuff. I have my new motherboard and memory, I just hope I can get a 9800x3d ordered tomorrow 🤞
What MB do U have?
Definitely grabbing me one of these for my new build, a Christmas gift for myself .
Welp this was even better than i expected. We have a new nr. 1. But at this point, the 7800X3D can be considered GOATED. Almost like the 1080Ti
The 5800x3d is even more impressive at this point.
the sports talk at 35:00 💀💀 Thanks Steve!
Superb review and presentation of test data as always, thanks.
Thanks for measuring baldurs gate 3 with 9800x3d. No one have done that. super thanks
The best game of 2023… so definitely worth of testing and CPU heavy so good for CPU test!
@@haukikannelagreed!
Would be interesting to see if the performance per Watt can be pushed closer to the 7800X3D with custom settings, first and foremost keeping it from boosting so high!
yes it's called lowering the frequency. The higher voltage is why the 9800x3d is less efficient. A 10% higher voltage = a 10²% (21%) increase in power. The 7800x3d was just forced lower on the voltage frequency curve where it was more efficient
@@Frozoken do you have data comparing the two CPUs with the same clock speed? Because obviously I know the principle but the point of my comment was that I'd like to see data.
The USD/FPS at various 7800X3D prices charts is a very interesting and useful addition to the review! Thanks, Steve!
Thank you, Tech Jesus! I asked for benchmarks, and you answered it
Thanks for the review. I'm checking your review first but I see from the titles that the other reviewers are also positive. 👀
Great review. One note of feedback is that your logo at the top right blocked the chart title at 29:09 and 30:17, making it difficult to read the last part of it.
Really appreciate the testing you do.
Im just curious why is the 7950x3d performance so bad in gaming as i remeber it being higher in hardware unboxed' 285k review.
Test looking not trustwortly. 7950x3d beats 7800x3d most of games if system optimized for double ccd.
Yeah I came here wondering this - if 7950x3d is set up correctly (core parking, PBO, etc) with good cooling it should have been much higher up in the chart.
Yeah, their test is definitely flawed when it comes to that cpu.
I was wondering the same thing. I think the testing here might have some issues. I hope Steve notices this or addresses it. It clearly does not make sense.
Could've waited for a 9800X3D, but that's alright.
Highly satisfied with my 7800X3D purchase. Bought that beast of a CPU for $378.49 USD during a sale back in June this year.
My brother also has a 7800X3D. Meanwhile, I am still on my 85 dollar Ryzen 5 5500 on my 5 year old mobo.
now I'm gonna buy a sh 5800x3d for 120-1250$
dont worry unless you play on 1080p you wont see a difference, all people that actually benchmarked 1440p and 4k shows Surprise CPU bottlenecking. It actually makes me sad that steve here do not mention it with a single word.
Yup glad I seen this review 9800X3D is definitely my next upgrade
Why
@visualpref simple I have a 11700k that been long overdue for a upgrade and since this for my gaming PC I want the best CPU for it

Keep in mind this is a release review, they didn't have time to go HAM yet. People have spotted supposed benchmarks running at 5.46 Ghz so I'm curious how far you can push this chip. Looking forward to the OC stream!
DerBauer ran his at 5.6! Check his video.
@Dr1ftop1a damn! Thanks for the tip!
really like your complexity of tests .. the best
Even though I will probably never get a 9800x3d, I'm just happy to see a company make hardware with actual improvement over last gen
No
Unfortunately, by very deliberately excluding real-world 1440p and 4K testing, Gamers Nesus and others (e.g.
Higher resolutions are more GPU dependent, CPU makes little difference.
Even at 1440p or 4K gaming, the vast majority of of people are not going to be running a 4090. So it doesn't actually give much useful information at all.
Thank you for still keeping older CPUs like the 2600 and 3700X in the charts!
