I remember as a kid on the playground, seemed like everyone made fun of the toys and no one wanted them. The lack of resemblance to the cartoon made them less desirable. Didn’t stop me from crying like a little baby when they both got wiped out in the movie
G1 Ironhide's helmet sort of resembles an ancient-Spartan helmet. Sort of makes sense considering his character as an enthusiastic and experienced warrior. Spartans were among the fiercest and best trained soldiers in the ancient world.
"While he wasn't the most powerful warrior, nor was he known for great bedside manners...." ...he does know how to deliver one hell of a no-effs-given flying kick to Thundercracker.
For the original toys, I remember making my own heads that I could slip onto the robot form. I apparently did that kind of stuff with several of my old toys. A few years back, I found my old Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors toys when going through a storage building. The generic humans still had the colored sculpting clay that I'd used to give them new outfits and hair to better match the cartoon characters.
10:14 This shot reminds me. Does anyone remember that prime toy comercial with ratchet doing this utterly bizzare "Hoo-ah" sound as he strikes a pose, in a voice that was very clearly not the same actor from the show? Great video! I never realized the similarity between the movie faces and the toy sticker. I've also never even seen a good picture of the sticker before this. Also 'glad I'm not the only one who noticed how insane the "I have no head" seen is! G1 could get crazy when it wanted to be man. Update: So I checked and he says this in the show but I don't think the clip from the ad is actualy from the show it'self. Either that or it's sped up super fast.
Ironhide was my favorite as a kid, and Rachet was my favorite as I got older. I can say the moment both were dead in the Live Action, I walked away from the movies and never looked back.
Before any of you ask, yes this is a remaster of my original video published back in March of 2017. It's reloaded with more content and I've re-recorded the audio. It was planned out with my Constructicons video so that if I do give them individual Retrospectives I can point back to them without regret. I'm sure you guys will enjoy how well this came out though. Check out my Cyberverse Season 3 Review: th-cam.com/video/wCUzHkTYkIc/w-d-xo.html And my Arcee Retrospective too: th-cam.com/video/pz2ieyXhulU/w-d-xo.html
I’ve been watching for years. Great content. But (yes there was a but coming) is this remaster a complimentary to Chris McFeely’s upcoming video? I personally like to watch varied uploaded content from the transformers community, instead of the same character exploration vids within basically the same day. I get that there’s uploader competition and there are bills we need to pay at the end of the day, but idk if we all try to be unique and forge our own paths, we can carry the community to new heights and beyond!
I think it was yet another coincidence. We don't compare notes or know what the other one is doing, and I don't think of it as a competition. I planned this one and the Constructicons video around the same time before moving onto new content. At some point I do want to remaster more of my older ones but I'm sure many would like for me to continue making new Retrospectives and Discussions videos.
@RodimusPrimal I’m curious, those character design sheets, are they from a visual guide or a “The Art of ...” type of book? I really enjoy all the detail you provide in these videos, amazing work!
Loved that moment at 12:45 in the Marvel G1 comic where Ratchet clobbers Starscream - '...How many have to die for you to get your jollies? HOW MANY...?' Powerful stuff, yes?
When I was a kid I got them both in a trade and I asked about the heads and he said, "the windshield is their head." when I saw them in stores I kept looking into the packaging looking to see if they had heads when brand new, lol
TFA did that too, albeit in different ways Bulkhead was named Ironhide in the Japanese dub And we have Ironhide from Team Athenian(led by Rodimus, the team included Hotshot, Red Alert, and Brawn as well) Both look vastly different from Ratchet
unpopular opinion but I quite liked Ironhide and Ratchets headless toys, as a kid I was kind fascinated with them, and there's soooo much diecast in these bots.
RodimusPrimal, the reason why "Aligned" Ironhide didn't showed up in the Prime cartoon was because of his live-action counterpart's death in Dark of the Moon; when it was decided that Ironhide should die in the film, the writers decided to replace him with Bulkhead to prevent kids from getting confused with a living Ironhide on the cartoon. You can even find that piece of info i said here on TFWiki if you want.

Apart from Bumblebee and Optimus, he was the only Autobot I could recognize from the rest of the bland grey Bayformers. I'd say he's still beloved even by Gen Z fans.
My 1st answer is no I was not angry I was confused about that the toys have no heads. 2nd I still like Ironhide and Ratchet a lot there personality from G1 still fit on them a lot they are amazing.
Nice, I Have a original Ironhide with head, and a Ratchet without head, as a child I found the toys strange, now I love them. To bad we almost never seen Ratchet repair platform in de cartoon or comic.
I was confused that both Ironhide and Ratchet were missing their heads in the toy line. In the cartoon and most of the comic books, they have heads. Transformers classics to Studio Series 86, they have heads.
Great retrospective oddly enough I had Ironhide when he came out and to be honest it never bothered me his toy was different from his animation many G1 toys were. It was still one of my earliest transformers toys and I enjoyed it very much 👍
Lol, absolutely love the small reference to Web World episode scene, we really need a focus review of that episode, it would be hilariously entertaining.
i always thought they were just the first line, they get better made later on. it was more troublesome trying to get them to stand up on their own. but the story line and voice acting made the great. i thought they were just regular old conversion vans.
Thank you so much for this video. The different designs for Ratchet and Ironhide always perplexed me as a kid, though I figured it had something to do with illustrators not liking the way the toys looked. Really want to see Bio on Ratchet as he is central to one of my favorite early comics storyline where he virtually single-handedly saves the Autobots.
Being half Japanese, I was lucky enough to grab a lot of those Diaclone toys when I was a kid on vacations overseas before the TFs came out. Having the Diaclone Black Ironhide and the Red Sunstreaker, I just slapped some spare Autobot logos and made them new characters. Who knew that 30 some odd years later that Spinout would become a thing!
having the original toys in 1985, i was confused as to the no head thing. the sled part was pretty cool. they were very playable and fun to transform back and forth. mad? no. they were just fun toys.
To be honest, when I first saw pictures of Ratchet and Ironhide’s toys, I was curious about the absence of their heads. When I first saw Ratchet in the g1 movie, I didn’t know who he was when he got slaughtered alongside Ironhide following the deaths of Brawn and Prowl. I had to do some research on the G1 characters during my time in High School and after watching the G1 Cartoon and the movies, Ratchet and Ironhide remain two of my fave Autobots. Also even though they share the same design they have opposite personalities: Ratchet is the brains while Ironhide is the muscle.
Ratchet has been a favorite of mine since the early comic books. Something really resonated with 10 year old me when he faced off against Megatron. Honestly, I love the way the character has developed over the years, and Jeffrey Combs' rendition in Prime is by far one of my favorites.
I once thought about the meaning of their head designs. Ironhide was a tough veteran then security officer. His head has gladiatorial theme. You know. Like Impactor. While Ratchet's "V" thing is a head mirror like surgeons were wearing back then. Consider Ratchet is one the most notable medical officer in TF franchise. I also think that they shared body type. Like how Seekers do. And Ratchet was given that crown thingy to differentiate with warrior type like Ironhide.
Some things are missing here Ratchet did also appear in War for Cybertron as a NPC and was in a Level where you had to stop the Decepticons by keeping them away from Him as he repaired Omega Supreme, and also Ratchet also did make frequent appearances in Rescue Bots Academy where he was Medix’s Uncle, oh and also that both Ironhide and Ratchet did also appear in the Bumblebee Movie as well some minor little details that were left out that’s all
My brother and i got Ratchet and Ironhide for Christmas and it was just cool to get a transfromer that i never noticed the head. But was confused about the cartoon look and my toy.
I wasn’t angry. I hadn’t seen the cartoon when Ratchet became my second Transformer. I accepted that this was a robot from another planet, so one can’t expect them to look very humanoid.
I'm probably in the minority.... I had Ironhide as a kid, and wanted Ratchet. I knew they looked different, but it didn't bother me too much... I thought their toy designs were neat, and I really liked the "sleds" -- the only other '84 toy with something similar was Optimus Prime with his combat deck. It made for good playability.
As a kid for sure me reason the fact that the toys differed from the animation/comic design never phased me for some reason. I had the Ironhide toy, I just thought his windshield was his face similar to some Gobots heh....
35+ years ago here in Greece, I remember returning to the toy shop with my mom telling the owner "this Transformer is headless" (Ironhide). I clearly remember the old guy who owned the place saying "oh God, I'm so sorry". So he opened up another sealed Ironhide to show us that it's going to be fine. He was completely baffled to see that it also didn't have a head! I ended up getting an Ultimate Warrior figure and a few Battle Beasts, while the two Ironhides were probably returned or tossed :(
Ironhidecwas a personal favorite of mine in g1 and leaped for joy when I saw him come busting through, ripping a decepticons in 2 in war for cybertron. He's who i will always pick to play when given the option in that game!
Awesome video Rodimus Primal and I got to say seeing this video makes me even love Ironhide and ratchet even more I'm more of a ratchet fan to be honest but seeing these video just overall great dude that's all I got to say till all are one
I remember getting the Ironhide toy and thinking WTF? But it grew on me. I liked the fact that he didn't have the standard humanoid look of the other toys. I actually thought his weapons platform was part of his overall body and not a separate piece, and I played with him that way.
Definitely loved Ironhide. Not sure if he was my favorite but maybe it was because his toy had no head. I don’t know. I was more likely confused about it but not angry, perhaps because I read the Marvel comics too. But in animation, Ironhide was great.
Ratchet, one of my faves, got a LOT of page time in the Marvel U.S. comic. Sadly, he was usually on the WRONG END of that attention. Heck, I think he dealt with Megatron even more than Optimus did! As for Ironhide, well, he was never a favourite. Especially after the savage beatdown he gave Mirage in All Hail Megatron. They went out like Autobots, though. 🎖🎖
Prowl was my favorite character. I was never lucky enough to own either of those in G1. I had Prowl, Shrapnel, Megatron, Jetfire, and Blaster. Several of the minicars and cassettes, and a ton of GoBots knock-offs. Cost and my age limited my Transformers interest.
I honestly think Ironhide and Ratchet being such strong characters was a deliberate move to compensate for the toys that don't make any sense as sentient robots. Honestly, I don't know why Hasbro imported them, since I can buy that most of the other Diaclone molds used make sense as sentient robots with heads, with the vanettes being a loud exception this rule.
It looks like they where quick to make all the models because they didn't put attention to the details like they do now for the MP models and earthrise that are what the g1 models should have look like in the beginning.
"Such heroic non-sense!" Great video as always. Lots of interesting facts that I did not know about. Can't wait to get these guys from the Earthrise line!
Nice time to remake the video Especially because of argue that's been going on recently on TH-cam The first time I saw this video back in 2016 I think, this video is one of my favorites
G1, Live Action, Animated, Prime, or other continuities, both characters are a staple to the franchise and will not be forgotten. Just a short note, I think you might have forgot to mention their appearance from Bumblebee.
Not forgotten indeed. I didnt mention the Bumblebee movie as this was more meant to focus on the toys and their heads but it also leaves room for when I do their individual Retrospectives.
Ironically their heads are the defining physical distinction between Ironhide and Ratchet.
Their crotches are different too. God, what a weird sentence.
@@collegerebel That's why I didn't mention it, since it's "hitting below the belt." :P

I only had Ironhide and not Ratchet, and yes, I wondered why his toy didn’t have a proper head!
Ironhide & Ratchet are my favorite characters from G1.
I’m guessing Basement Jaxx we’re such fans of these two bots that they made the song “where’s your head at?!”
Here's another one for the "Rodimus primal and chris mcfeely make a very similar video around the same time" list.
And yet another coincidence that neither of us planned for, I can assure you.
trailbreaker was gonna appear in the early production of tf4 and tf5 as ironhide's brother
It looks like they where quick to make all the models because they didn't put attention to the details like they do now for the MP models and earthrise that are what the g1 models should have look like in the beginning.
I had the toy for Ratchet and I pretended that the mini base part of him was its own personality, which I named Screwdriver.
Great vid man!
"Such heroic non-sense!" Great video as always. Lots of interesting facts that I did not know about. Can't wait to get these guys from the Earthrise line!
Ratchet and IronHide: Exist
Toy manufacturers: So no head?
hey Rodimus!
I hope one day you tell us about Unicron's FOUR HORSEMEN.
Thanks! and STAY SAFE!
😊
Nice time to remake the video
Especially because of argue that's been going on recently on TH-cam
The first time I saw this video back in 2016 I think, this video is one of my favorites
Argue?
@@RodimusPrimal how people and Ton Ton were arguing about Ratchet being a remold
@@transformersfan-zx8ow well then let this video serve as education to the uninitiated.
@@RodimusPrimal yes
Also are you gonna buy the earthrise Ironhide and Ratchet figures
Ironhide:So your a clone?
Ratchet:we are just separated characters.
Ironhide:Then where’s My HEAD!?
G1, Live Action, Animated, Prime, or other continuities, both characters are a staple to the franchise and will not be forgotten.
Just a short note, I think you might have forgot to mention their appearance from Bumblebee.
Not forgotten indeed. I didnt mention the Bumblebee movie as this was more meant to focus on the toys and their heads but it also leaves room for when I do their individual Retrospectives.
