Beautifully done as always. When I was a child here in Wales my uncle had one. They were donated by a Lord Waldon as replicas of ancient Celtic swords to use in the trenches. My poor uncle died when I was about 6 and this brought back memories of him. Thank you
I believe it is based on a Welsh weapon called a CLEDD, and was issued to the Royal Welch Fusiliers, as you say for trench warfare. Joubert's patent of 25th August 1916, by Felix Joubert, a sculptor from Chelsea covers this weapon also known as the Welsh Machine Gunners knife. Similar design by Fairbairn (Fairbairn Sykes "Commando " knife fame), was called the Smatchet used by Commandos and Paratroops in ww2. The Cledd had an overall length of 24 inches with a 17 1/2 inch blade. The Smatchet had 10 3/4 inch blade, and 16 inches overall. Very potent weapon also used by OSS. My sympathies on the loss of your uncle, having lost three over the last 8 years.
@@robshirewood5060 Thank you for that. Very interesting information. Yes as you say a Welsh Fusilier. He came back after being gassed and when he came home did little except sit in a chair and occasionally sob and hug himself. So wish my childhood self had given him more attention.
@@TheAndybow1964 PTSD, but not recognised until decades later, my grandmother said one of her brothers was gassed by a submarine whilst sitting in a lifeboat, another fell off a telegraph pole whilst under fire, terrible things they suffered, used to deliver meals on wheels to a WW1 gas victim in the 70s
@@pcka12 So true. I work in a Library and before lockdown some students were complaining that the cenotaph here and poppies were "glorifying and celebrating war" . Honestly wanted to weep. No bloody idea.

I find it fascinating how all these rusty old swords and knives just turn up out of no where. Maybe I'll dig around in my back garden or just buy one from the shop and leave it outside for a week or two lol
honestly, alot of these vids seem like the item in question was just dropped in a bucket of water for a year or so. the rust layers are too thick and evenly distributed. a sword lying around outside would get uneven amounts of dampness and heat from the sun. it wouldnt look like this
@@razorfett147 not to mention a lot of it looks surface level if you find true metal from 100 years ago rusted it's pocked and pitted all over and the thin parts of the actual blades should be jagged and ate into from said rust.

Generally you're right but it doesn't say outside here, it said "left in the bottom of a trunk that got wet", if this is just a replica of those replicas it probably wasn't there for a hundred years, so theoretically the condition could be authentic I guess.

A look at the thumbnail is enough to tell it is faked
This short sword appears to have the same design and markings as the "Welsh knife" in the Royal Armouries collection, made for the 9th Battalion, Royal Welch Fusiliers between 1917 and 1918. And it was the forerunner of the "Smatchet" designed by William E. Fairbairn during World War II.
It's most certainly not a replica!

@@RCD566 I have one complete with sheath, it was passed down to me so I am confident that the item is genuine. A great restoration but I did cringe slightly at the adding of the etching to an original WW1 sword.

Fantastic, and I love the Welsh Dragon, in 1982 I served on HMS Cardiff in the Falklands, we called ourselves 'The Welsh Warship'.

1:46 I love the ring on that steel. Sharp and clear. I think it means it’s well tempered. I buy machetes that ring when I flick them with my finger. Most of them don’t. They always stay sharp and cut like mad.
PS. All the way through your project I kept thinking about being in those trenches and having to fight for your life with one of these. OMG!

This is a very nice restoration - I have some little knowledge of WWI trench weapons, and this is a new one for me. The comment below has given some good information about where these swords came from.

No. The swords that were the inspiration for the Welsh trench sword were also the inspiration for the elvish sword "Sting", that Bilbo found.
The other, weird, elvish swords in the Jackson abominations were, well... weird--- with no parallels in hisitory, or in Tolkien's legendarium.

Nice job, the hilt is the guard, the haft is the handle & the pommel is the back end of the haft sometimes with use in mind (point, etc), not just a counter weight, 👍😊

It's an interesting shape for a sword or knife. It kinds resembles the Ancient Greek Xiphos, only much shorter & far wider - too wide to use as a stabbing blade, really. Perhaps it was supposed to double as a trench shovel, or something.

The best part is they actually put an edge on it. Most restoration channels will restore a blade but leave it without even a dull edge, which I find insulting to original piece.

The rust on this is so fake 🤣 one look at the thumbnail. Things don’t rust like this sorry. However the restoration... the sword corrosion was accelerated/faked for AnOtHeR GrEaT ReStOrAtIoN ViDeO!

The techniques for creating fake rust have really improved in recent years
I swear to god we see more of these crap than actual restorations. I mean look at how caked up that rust is, I guarantee there'll be much more damage to the blade if it was actually left out to build up that amount of rust naturally.
How do you tell if rust is faked or not?
yea. Definitely doesn't look like a sword that sat around in the elements for better part of a century. looks more like it was soaked in a container for a period of time then retrieved. a blade this old and weathered wouldnt be in such good shaped after a bit of scraping and buffing
@@septimusheap925 lack of pitting on the base metal should have pock Marks. The light orange color of the rust indicates it is newer surface rust not the more deep red. Older rust that has penetrated into the base metal creating those pock marks. Also the rust shouldnt flake off the top of the metal it should be taking material away from the original sword. Total bs video

Don’t be, the rust was intentionally grown on there to generate views
That happens when you buy a replica sword. Put it in a highly oxidizing environment for two weeks, paint a bit of rust on afterwards for good measure and then do a restoration video.

More terrifying than a shovel? Many officers carried swords as a symbol of leadership. Your average foot soldier wasn't going to have access to a short sword.
In WW2 there was Mad Jack Churchill who fought the Germans with a bow and arrow and a sword, got shot multiple times but survived, got captured then set free

Someone please tell me the technique he used to put that dragon on. I've watched probably hundreds of restoration videos ranging from blades, gun, all the way to video game consoles and computers and I have NEVER seen that done before. What was that?
I think your sound was delayed a bit, but still a great restoration to watch!
Why oh why do so many show using rouge compound that is designed for non ferrous metals being used on hardened steel. For steel use first black cake compound, followed by white, regular green and lastly pure green chrome. For faster removal, go to 320 grit glue on compound that can be purchased at any knife making or gunsmithing supply.

This is a replica from the ancient Greek sword called "xiphos" that was a side sword of the Greek "hoplite"
A rich british nobleman ordered such a sword in wwl for his soldiers. In wwll british soldiers used a similar weapon called ,Smatchet'.

I suppose that during WWI a weapon like this would be somewhat comforting to an infantryman in a trench, if it were issued to an infantryman. It would be hard to oppose an enfilade attack in one's own trench by trying to swing one of those long WWI rifles with an 18 inch bayonet to the left or right. The French soldiers had the 'French Nail' dagger made from the stancions for stringing barbed wire; the American Army had a trench knife with a knuckle-duster and skull-crusher issued to some troops although some did carry their own Bowie knives and 'Arkansas Toothpicks'; the German Army had a 'Grabendolch' - a cheaply made, short dagger manufactured later in the war. Of course, an entrenching tool can slice open a shoulder with one whack or one jabs its blade at the neck of the enemy opponent. This weapon appears to resemble somewhat the Roman Legion short sword, 'Gladius'. The Roman legionaires used their sword during attack formation for jabbing and not slashing in close quarter combat. This Welsh sword could possibly be used during an enfilade attack on one's own trench much the same way as the Roman legionaires used the 'Gladius' to jab at an enemy opponent in close quarter combat and it does have a skull-crusher on its hilt. It looks like this weapon was made for close quarter trench combat or, at least, could be put to good use in the trench. Just a few thoughts, didn't mean this to be a history lesson.
