    I present to you the restoration of a small sword. I want to clarify that this sword is a replica. it is only used for decoration.

    Judging from the bad quality of the mouldings on the crossguard, this is pretty much Tourist gift shop quality, rather than a real sword.

      You're absolutely right, but were mouldings any better on mass produced real military swords? I know handcrafted stuff that officers got were likely higher quality (Depending on how much the officer or noble was willing to spend) but the lower level soldiers' swords and daggers. Would they have been much better than this? (As far as mould quality, not blade or tang quality)

    • @JoshSwordNerd
      @JoshSwordNerd ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the Rat-tang wasn't enough to come to the same conclusion? the tang is just a thin piece, and will most likely snap if the sword hits something.

  • @alanwelch6594
    @alanwelch6594 ปีที่แล้ว +32

    If the blade was hardened steel, you introduced stress fractures by cold hammering it thus ruining the blade. It looks like it may have just been mild steel so it was junk to begin with.

    • @howler6490
      @howler6490 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      First thing I check on ANY knife is blade quality...give it a simple "ting"test, that'll tell you roughly what your dealing with.
      The blade does not necessarily need to be shinyshiny, rather leave it dull and preserve any etching that is present.
      This was a good training run...keep at it...good luck...

    • @Baronstone
      @Baronstone ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It has a rat tail tang so it is shit regardless

    • @superdave8248
      @superdave8248 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This does come across as a Chinese junk wall display piece. That was the first thing I thought too when he was hammering on it. It had to be soft metal. No practical use other than as a display piece on the wall.
      Pretty blade though.

      @kuroroluxifer8321 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@superdave8248 it wouldn't work in battle, but I'm pretty sure since nowadays nobody wears armor, you could very well use this to stab someone in the guts without a problem...

  • @dragontdc
    @dragontdc ปีที่แล้ว +33

    You were doing great until you put the grip on backwards. The grip should taper toward the blade so the larger end provides a lower chance of it slipping out of the hand. Easy enough to fix, though. Just turn it around. I like the faceted design. In a real sword it would provide more control of edge alignment in cuts. Your painting of the hilt added a lot to it and made it more beautiful than the makers ever dreamed.
    An idea; if your attempts to burn he wood were not done for comedy, I suggest you get one of the blowtorch-like lighters used by some cigar smokers.

      The pommel helps with slipping when the handle narrows towards it, so it doesn't only balance the blade. The original pommel here was just a decoration as the blade itself though, and it's now more sensible than it was before in my opinion. Most swords and daggers I've seen and held have had their handle like in the restored version and it's actually more ergonomic to hold when it's like that.

    • @wesleyworley8982
      @wesleyworley8982 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The original handle has a swell in the middle and tapers toward either end. The handle he removed isn't even close and looks like it came off of an old wooden handled screwdriver.

    • @superdave8248
      @superdave8248 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@wesleyworley8982 Just my two cents, but I wouldn't be surprised if this wasn't Chinese manufactured. The wood handle probably did come off the assembly line and was left overs from another product line. They just found a repurpose for somebody else excess production run picked up for cheap.

    great job on the restoration. i would however recommend perhaps looking into getting a longer and wider flat file when doing the edges as this aids in getting even long smooth strokes to give you an even flat and straight edge.

    I’m not gonna lie I think you restored my childhood Toledo dagger....I ligitimtly think this used to belong to me and I’m very happy to see the home it went to, this was stolen from me after I recovered it from my childhood neighborhood where I buried it 10 years prior, I had it for two months and it was stolen and I never saw it again, originally it had a wire wrapped handle but the wire rusted off and I cleaned up the wood but everything else literally brought tears to my eye that I found it 😊 even if it was not with me, thank you

    This item appears, as so many other "rusted relics" on U-Tube, to have the look of rust just recently induced. That blade's appearance does not resemble the hilt & grip as far as the entire piece aging together would appear, had the piece aged simultaneously, ie. as a unit, it doesn't match, re. its alleged age of neglect. The fine threads on that shaft indicate its manufacture from a time that's ANYTHING but "relic" related. And WTH would you continue to emery that blade to the point that there's now barely a trace of its prior engraving?! Where did THAT faux pas enter the thought process? And a FILE is used to recover the former sharp edge of a sword?! This "restoration" is just a conglomeration of incongruity!

    I covered my handle with sinew because it was so uncomfortable to hold.
    The original etching says it's made in Toledo Spain.
    They are made of 440 stainless steel so they're meant for decoration.
    Weird idea for a new handle though... As the original was more of a oval where at the top by the hilt and bottom by the pomel should be the same diameter and wider in the center.

    This is an interesting restoration, but somehow the handle appears to be misaligned with the pommel. Perhaps the handle hole was not drilled straight or the threaded tang was bent. The handle just seems rather plain, given the fancy guard and pommel.

    Ah, i only assumed it was a relic. 🤦🏼‍♀️ my bad!
    Not that i’d know, but did you put the timber hand grip on arse about? You’d want the thicker part toward the back of your hand IMHO.
    You did a reasonably good job with the tools you had available. 👍🏼

    I think you put the handle upside down,i noticed that it isnt drilled straight. If i was doing this and was going to do alot of it i would get a lathe you can find these at flea markets or someplace like harbor freight pretty inexpensive. It will make the handle work much easier. Nice job though.Thanks for lettin me watch!

    Can I suggest getting some storm matches for burning the wood? the only way they can be put out is by being submerged under water.
