Dark Forces encapsulates the old saying of "Does a falling tree make a sound, when no one is around?" and modifies it into first person shooter format of "Does the Empire know Kyle Katarn is there, when no storm troopers are left alive?"
This game REALLY nailed the atmosphere. I remember being 13 years old, playing it at a friends house, saying "This is amazing." and my friend saying "Yeah, it really FEELS like Star Wars, doesn't it?" Yes. Yes it does.
Star Wars Rogue One could've been good. If Disney didn't step in and change the whole tone/plot of the film. It was originally supposed to be an Apocalypse Now rendition of Star Wars.

@@yocapo32 Eh, the most interesting i've seen Boba Fett in EU is in the New Jedi Order book series where he becomes the new mandalore and fights alongside the Galactic Alliance against the Yuuzon Vhong. Outside of that he's basically just the Star Wars equivalent of Steven Seagal an untouchable killing machine that walks through his enemies while not having a distinguishable personality.

Someone created a level for Dark Forces that had several rooms that existed in the same space. You'd go into a hall at the end of the room that was a turn around that would bring you back to what should have been the same room, but had more bad guys in it. Damn. That game came out 25 years ago. I feel old.
One of the things I found messing with reading the Dark Forces data files is that pretty much all the official levels do this at least a little bit, but especially the end of the ice level is just a mess of overlapping tunnels and ice and that chemical area.
Discovering this channel and picking and choosing videos at semi-random has made this video especially cathartic for finally revealing where that huge leap in sewer level count came from
I think as a kid I would've stopped playing right then and there if the sewer level wasn't right at the start. Forcing yourself through that horrifying dianoga-infested shithole so that you can see the rest of the game... I guess it builds character, or something.
@Stix N' Stones They don't modify your movement in dumb ways like those, but they're commonly cramped, dark, maze-like and boring, not to mention cliche as all hell. In this particular case, though, the biggest problem is that the dark maze is full of respawning nightmare tentacle monsters.
Lucasarts LOVED that level for some reason. 'The Sawmill' level from Outlaws (their western shooter) is basically the exact same thing all over again. Maybe even more evil in fact. 'The Tian Shan River' from Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine also uses the same concept although they did simplify it there somewhat.
Punching three kell dragons to death... That's some Teddy Roosevelt power levels right there. Also, I don't know about you guys, but Krix Madine sounds like a really fancy cheese toastie. Possibly involving blue cheese and Black Forest ham.
Krix Madine is still a bit better than Plo Koon. Madine is only a letter off Nadine, and Krix is only a letter off Trix, which if you believe old gangster movies was a name at some point.
So, you kill Boba Fett with mines behind a wall while he doesn't react to it? The sad part is, it's still only the 2nd most embarrassing way Fett goes out.
To be fair, I guess Fett didn't die in this game so he could get beaten by Solo later.

@@leebard9335 I don't believe those are canon, but, I will say every SW short story is leagues ahead of the writing done for episode 1-3, and 7,8 soon to be 9, and are more in tune with the original trilogy than anything ever officially entered into the timeline. In my mind they were legit.
Going by the old EU, it's even more of a family tradition. His granddaughter tries to take on one of Han and Leia's kids and gets bane'd with telekinesis.
Imagine giving a soldier a mission objective that's "infiltrate a base and steal something" and then 20 minutes later there's a news story about that entire base being massacred.
LucasArts used that guy for most of the Vader speech moments in 90s SW games; Rebel Assault 1 and 2, X-Wing series, TIE Fighter series, Dark Forces, etc.
that level legitimately got me stuck on that game when I was 8 or 9. Never beat it. Fucking tentacle boss at the end always robbed me of experiencing that supposedly sweet space battle at the end of the game.
The “Kick Start My Heart” is one of the funniest bits I’ve seen in a long time and the whole thing was like 5 seconds. I will always think this is hilarious.
Just some trivia for you. The imperial officer at the end next to the shuttle was placed there not as a threat, but to instead help show off the scale of the shuttle - giving it a nearby size comparison (human). Also, if you aim straight up as far as you can and punch someone, you uppercut them into the air. Sometimes they fly up at least 20 meters. Its hilarious. I used to uppercut people off ledges into space on the nar shadda level. If you turn on god mode, you can also jump into space and will find all the bodies you punched off on an invisible floor that appears to be flying through space. It's pretty trippy.

The dark troopers in The Mandalorian were badass, so it’s really cool to learn after checking Wookiepedia that this game is their first appearance ever. I thought they were made for the show.
Pity they're nerfed, just like the TIE Defenders in Rebels and Squadrons, especially when compared to the beasts that they are on the TIE Fighter video game.
As a long time Dark Forces fan, seeing Dark Troopers in live action made me so happy. Just wish more had been done with them, brought them back in season 3.
Pig aliens = Gammorian Guards. I can't fuckin BELIEVE I remember that. I was such an OG trilogy nerd as a little kid. Then it was ruined for my own kids' generation. Dark Forces was SUCH a great Doom clone, I was almost as blown away by it as I was the original Doom a year earlier. Excellent look back and playthrough. I wish this gem would get the ol' HD remaster.
I always really liked the fact that this game was completely devoid of Jedi, force and lightsaber antics. Something about exploring the Star Wars universe as a regular mercenary with blasters and the like just made it feel more fun and immersive.
Winston Wolff actually directly inspired his movie counterpart character. At a social event Tarantino met Winston who had been introduced to him as the guy who solved problems in the making of Dark Forces.
And then there's kriffing Multiverse Theory, as implied in the Devilworlds comics, the Infinities comics, the Tales comics, and then the Cult and Supernatural Encounters novellas. As a Legends fan, believe me, Star Wars has always been this unnaturally wild even during its infancy.
The story of this game trilogy is the one they should have used for the/a movie. I played these games decades ago and still remember them lovingly. They even treat all the characters with respect. I hope someday they do a remaster.
Me and all my buddies thought when they announced a new trilogy they were gonna try a gritty Dark-Knight type series with Kyle as the main char. We live in a whacked out timeline.

The graphics have really aged quite well! Like Doom & the mighty Build engine Triumvirate (Blood, Shadow Warrior & DN3D) it's a classic that just kicks ass! The gameplay, atmosphere, score & sound effects are equally effective & consistent. Another classic & a treasured gem of my childhood. As per usual, a solid video Civvie 11, for real, great job!!!!
@@KyosukeShigeru He absolutely slayed in Gargoyles, but at the time this game came out, he was also doing a few episodes of Voyager and one of Deep space 9, a few episodes of some forgotten sitcoms, and he even did a full movie called "Time Travel Through the Bible". Not to mention that he was still filming the last season of Next Generation and a documentary about the end of Star Trek Next generation while the game was in pre-production, so not a lot of time to do voice acting.
I got the LucasArts Archives pack, with Dark Forces, Full Throttle, The Dig and the first two Monkey Island games on it. That was THE SHIT. Still have the discs.
DARK FORCES II NAOW. By the way, it is sadly funny that although JK2/3 definitely has the best saber combat/force use, Dark Forces II definitely has the best guns. I don't know why they didn't just pseudo-port them over to JK2 instead of the lame versions of them we got instead. Also, I actually really liked the massive ass level design of DFII. It was late 90's graphics, sure, but damn, levels actually felt so damn big and felt immersive just because of that.
I always loved dark forces. No lightsaber, no force powers, just you and weapons used by the everyman. I was always interested in what combat was like outside the jedi stuff. I use to wake up everyday and play this on my ps1 was one of the best times of my life :)
With how the Mandalorian handles some of the extended universe stuff, at this point, I wouldn't be surprised to see Kyle Katarn to show up for another go at Boba Fett before pairing up as some sort of buddy cop situation to kick some ass together.
fond memories of getting this on sale at a babbages and playing 28k dial up multiplayer with a friend across town. it played well. blew me away at the time.

Depends. Wouldn't hurt to play a rereleased Future Perfect on multiplatforms, especially if paired up with the second game (which is nicely acquirable on the schlocky Homefront: The Revolution via in-game arcade machine cheat code).
I started up this game for the first time just a few weeks ago, and within seconds, I immediately pegged it as the most Star Warsy-feeling Star Wars game I'd ever played. It nails it better than far more modern Star Wars games. Some kinda LucasArts magic that other companies, even great ones like Pandemic Studios (RIP), can't quite capture, I guess.
For me, the MIDI rendition of the main theme in the opening cinematic was the best rendition of it without using music files from the original film soundtrack. It was the music my Sound Blaster AWE32 was made for.
Well LucasArts was owned by George Lucas, so they had access to all of the movie materials and even the same technology, like motion capture equipment, which wasn't common in the 90s especially for a video game studio
Thankfully it has so many rules and specifics that it can't be used constantly and thank god for that. as much I would fangasm seeing Palpatine leading the most powerful Sith Lords in Legends and the two trilogies, the new SW owners would abuse it to fucking death.

One thing I remember about that Stouker Concussion Rifle, it was an awesome mine disposal weapon. After I had more than a few deaths to lots of the mines Civvie noted, I just kept that Concussion Rifle ready and blasted away at any suspiciously dark corners. Star Wars fireworks is good culture ^_^
Yeah the reuse of assets is uncanny, though I think they came out at about the same time innit? This was in February 28, 1995, and Shadows of the Empire was on the N64 on December 3, 1996. A bit under two years apart. Though Wiki states that they had two completely different project leads in every department I'd imagine many of the programmers swung right into SotE right after this one was released. Reusing those assets probably saved a lot of time EDIT: "LucasArts used the level editor of the Jedi engine, previously used on its games Star Wars: Dark Forces and Outlaws, to create the game's 3D environments." This may explain it

If it's one thing I can appreciate about the channel, it's definitely Civvie's sense of humor. Unlike say Gman, his humor is universal and even if you don't get the jokes, you can laugh at them. Hell, I'd say his channel is underrated, and I hope one of these days, the channel passes up others. As for the video, it's humorous as always, and it's awesome to see him cover Dark Forces in its' OG state. I just wish we got DarkXL to be complete to see him cover that.

@Stix N' Stones They don't modify your movement in dumb ways like those, but they're commonly cramped, dark, maze-like and boring, not to mention cliche as all hell. In this particular case, though, the biggest problem is that the dark maze is full of respawning nightmare tentacle monsters.
Lucasarts LOVED that level for some reason. 'The Sawmill' level from Outlaws (their western shooter) is basically the exact same thing all over again. Maybe even more evil in fact. 'The Tian Shan River' from Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine also uses the same concept although they did simplify it there somewhat.

Just some trivia for you. The imperial officer at the end next to the shuttle was placed there not as a threat, but to instead help show off the scale of the shuttle - giving it a nearby size comparison (human).
Also, if you aim straight up as far as you can and punch someone, you uppercut them into the air. Sometimes they fly up at least 20 meters. Its hilarious. I used to uppercut people off ledges into space on the nar shadda level. If you turn on god mode, you can also jump into space and will find all the bodies you punched off on an invisible floor that appears to be flying through space. It's pretty trippy.

The dark troopers in The Mandalorian were badass, so it’s really cool to learn after checking Wookiepedia that this game is their first appearance ever. I thought they were made for the show.

I always really liked the fact that this game was completely devoid of Jedi, force and lightsaber antics. Something about exploring the Star Wars universe as a regular mercenary with blasters and the like just made it feel more fun and immersive.

The story of this game trilogy is the one they should have used for the/a movie. I played these games decades ago and still remember them lovingly. They even treat all the characters with respect. I hope someday they do a remaster.

The graphics have really aged quite well! Like Doom & the mighty Build engine Triumvirate (Blood, Shadow Warrior & DN3D) it's a classic that just kicks ass! The gameplay, atmosphere, score & sound effects are equally effective & consistent. Another classic & a treasured gem of my childhood. As per usual, a solid video Civvie 11, for real, great job!!!!

Not to mention that he was still filming the last season of Next Generation and a documentary about the end of Star Trek Next generation while the game was in pre-production, so not a lot of time to do voice acting.

By the way, it is sadly funny that although JK2/3 definitely has the best saber combat/force use, Dark Forces II definitely has the best guns. I don't know why they didn't just pseudo-port them over to JK2 instead of the lame versions of them we got instead. Also, I actually really liked the massive ass level design of DFII. It was late 90's graphics, sure, but damn, levels actually felt so damn big and felt immersive just because of that.

Depends. Wouldn't hurt to play a rereleased Future Perfect on multiplatforms, especially if paired up with the second game (which is nicely acquirable on the schlocky Homefront: The Revolution via in-game arcade machine cheat code).
I started up this game for the first time just a few weeks ago, and within seconds, I immediately pegged it as the most Star Warsy-feeling Star Wars game I'd ever played. It nails it better than far more modern Star Wars games. Some kinda LucasArts magic that other companies, even great ones like Pandemic Studios (RIP), can't quite capture, I guess.

For me, the MIDI rendition of the main theme in the opening cinematic was the best rendition of it without using music files from the original film soundtrack. It was the music my Sound Blaster AWE32 was made for.
Well LucasArts was owned by George Lucas, so they had access to all of the movie materials and even the same technology, like motion capture equipment, which wasn't common in the 90s especially for a video game studio
They actually did time travel in Star Wars Rebels.
And they use the force for pretty much bullet time/stopping time in Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order.

Thankfully it has so many rules and specifics that it can't be used constantly and thank god for that. as much I would fangasm seeing Palpatine leading the most powerful Sith Lords in Legends and the two trilogies, the new SW owners would abuse it to fucking death.

This was in February 28, 1995, and Shadows of the Empire was on the N64 on December 3, 1996. A bit under two years apart.
Though Wiki states that they had two completely different project leads in every department I'd imagine many of the programmers swung right into SotE right after this one was released. Reusing those assets probably saved a lot of time

If it's one thing I can appreciate about the channel, it's definitely Civvie's sense of humor. Unlike say Gman, his humor is universal and even if you don't get the jokes, you can laugh at them. Hell, I'd say his channel is underrated, and I hope one of these days, the channel passes up others. As for the video, it's humorous as always, and it's awesome to see him cover Dark Forces in its' OG state. I just wish we got DarkXL to be complete to see him cover that.
I love Gman, but not so long ago he started to drop in some "memes" in his videos, and it feels like a boomer trying to be funny to the kids, but is not because his memes are normie at best.

1:45 "Whatever the fuck this is," was a vector based Empire Strikes Back licensed cabinet. It showed up in the late 90's in my local arcade and it kicked ass. Pretty good for a game from 85 to impress teenager who'd been playing Blood and Duke3d over a decade later.
