@@alster546 Pretty much, maybe they decided that the Heresiarch would be a better miniboss enemy than Korax, as at least two Heresiarch enemies are found in Hexen, end of Hub 3 & 4 and there are some more in the map pack. Hexen on the whole suffered from a lack of enemies.
@@TheSteinin They probably did it because they thought that Hersiarch wasn't "Final boss" enough to be the Final Boss. Originally, he was meant to be D'Sparil's brother (hence him being the second serpent Rider, and why he's so angry to learn of his defeat), before they replaced him with Korax and made him a miniboss, my guess is they also forgot about the cutscene at the end of Chapter 3. The irony is that Hesiarch is actually a harder boss then Korax. Korax can be killed in 10 seconds if you just spam at him with a ring of invincibility. Hesiarch meanwhile can block almost anything, and forces the player to stop and think. Plus, his ability to summon Priests is distinctly similar to D'sparil's ability.

Does anyone know why they took out the maps of shooters when they got 3D? I know a 3D map is harder to draw but the game is 3D. I think RavenSoft and many other games suffered from being highly confusing in the no-map era.
A fun part about D'Sparil. He doesn't retaliate against his disciple's attacks, so if you let him live long enough, his disciples can essentially end up killing him as he's not immune to their damage either.
Yep, that's a good design. Usually when stacking powerups is allowed (in any type of game), 95% of players just keep hoarding them "for the worst times", up until the final boss where they don't even burn through 50% of all the shit they've collected, and end up going "Welp, guess I needed to use these items a bit more often..." To avoid this, Raven is like "Ok, here's the deal, dipshit, we won't allow you to carry too much of this stuff, so now you can actually use it freely in order to make your life easier, as well as spare the protagonist's shoulders from hurting because he has to keep carrying all the junk throughout the whole game on your behalf." Thankfully, Wayfarer's Tome exists. Because if a game needed better weapon damage, less knockback and more dynamic gameplay in general, that game is Heretic. Seriously, don't play Heretic without Wayfarer's Tome.

When I played Doom for the first time, I said to myself "Well, this isn't so hard, why do a lot of people have problems with this game". And now I see why I thought so at the time - because I played Heretic before I played Doom.
20:23 let's not forget that, in the same room, you get Gauntlets of the Necromancer, Shadow Sphere AND Tome of Power. These three combined allow you to effortlessly kill both Iron Liches in about twenty seconds and not even break a sweat.
@@DinnerForkTongue Oh, I tested that. Drain from the gauntlets basically mitigates anything that isn't a one-shot kill, even on Black Plague Possesses Thee.
Funny that Black Plague is for me easier than Smite-meister because of that. Quicker monsters aren't that much trouble, and I always have ammo problems on Bringest them oneth and especially Smite-meister, so more ammo is welcomed.
Right! Yeah the enemies are a tad more bullet spongy than they ideally whould be, but that's the cost of having no hitscanners. I always felt Heretic had better weapon sounds than Doom (excl. Super Shotty) and the inventory system was also super cool, though it drastically reduced the difficulty. Civvie also undersold a lot of the levels. I loved the looks of a lot of them, like the Guardhouse (E1M3, the initial area looked so cozy and lived-in, despite the Doom engine), the Cathedral (E1M6), the Azure Fortress (E3M4, I always loved the vibrant look of the azure watery texture set), the River of Fire (S2E3, again, the fire texture set looks way more vibrant and fiery than anything found in Doom).
Heretic is damned good game, but enjoying a game also means being honest about it. I love the level design for the most part, but episodes 3, 4, and 5 are massive dicks in the open levels and are quite the slogfest after episode 3.. The pacing kinda falls apart.
Probably because you weren't playing on the insane difficulty. I like civvie but this whole mentality of playing on an insane difficulty and then saying everything is too spongey and hard is really stupid. JUST PUT IT AT A DIFFICULTY YOU ENJOY GODDAMN.
So when I played through Heretic for the first time, I completely ignored the Shadowsphere, because Doom trained me to hate the projectile-randomizing partial invisibility powerup. And you're telling me it gives you the ghost property so physical attacks just go right through you? I don't even think I'm angry, just numb.
@@thezambambo2184 Basically, all enemy attacks/enemies themselves have a random chance to fire/aim in a completely random direction, not just to the side of you. Partial Invis helps with hitscan enemies the most and CAN help start infighting, but people usually hate it with anything that isn't zombiemen because it fucks with your dodging instinct and makes all projectiles unpredictable.
@@thezambambo2184 Only in Doom. In Heretic certain flagged projectiles (thrown axes, Iron Lich ice balls, and a few more I don't remember so easily) noclip straight through you, and it disables the target-searching AI of the Iron Liches' tornadoes.

Pro Tip: Get your 11th hour disks and on the last one there's wads of the mansion for Doom 1, Doom 2, and Heretic. That's how big Doom was. Developers completely unassociated with them, making games in entirely different genres like the adventure games that your mom preferred, were sneaking in level maps for Doom. (I'm also entirely convinced that Heretic takes place in the same universe as Catacombs 3D.)
I loved this game more than Doom primarily because it had such a beautiful color palette and unmatched sense of place. I REALLY have had the desire to play it again lately, but wonder how well it holds up. As much as I loved it back in the day, I have never done another play-through.
Just crack out e1m1. Probably the one you played most if you were like me and had the demo as a kid. I feel sure that atmosphere and sense of place holds up.
Same here, I find Doom and Doom 2 boring and confusing, for some reason Heretic with all it's secrets just clicks with me much better. It is more colourful, enemy roster is more interesting, weapons are classic, level design, especially in episode 2 and 3, is close to perfect. First episode always drags a bit but after that, amazing.
The perfectly edited The Big Lebowski log jammin' scene made to look like it's on the 3DO while senators and CNN are watching. Flawlessly done. I watched that 6 times in a row. Hilarious. I just love your work.
Dial-up deathmatch with Heretic was some of the most mid 90s fun I ever had, even moreso than Duke Nukem 3D. Turning people into chickens then chasing them around with the gauntlets never got old. Me and my friend must have spent over a hundred hours 1v1 deathmaching on the final episode 1 map: wide open arena for flying shenanigans, chasing chickens, luring the other player into the exploding egg room. Great times.
Descent also has keypatterns, to a degree, the reactor is always locked behind the red key door. I like that kind of consistency because it implies someone in that world set a standard and everyone uses it
@Agent 005 whomever was told to make level 6 was told to introduce drillers and he did so with gusto. I will never forget that screetch they make until the day I die
Time Bomb of the Ancients wasn't a disappointment... you backpedal or sidestep and drop a few strategically. That's why you find them in large quantities.
This. They are perfect to drop in front of approaching Golems and Sabreclaws, and absolutely INVALUABLE in Faithless against even Iron Liches and Brown Chaos Serpents.
For some reason I had false memories of the Tome even being in Hexen, even though it wasn't (but it was in Hexen 2, which aside from the demo I never played in full). You're right though, it is a great concept. Heretic is a hugely inspiring game to me. Growing up, Doom & GTA2 were like my two favorite games. If Heretic can be thought of as a commercial level Fantasy themed "Total Conversion" for Doom, one of my childhood ambitions was making a Total Conversion/ GTA2 style game with the dark fantasy theme of Heretic, with magic projectile weapons instead of guns, & instead of GTA2's gang based mission system, you would work for different guilds/ clans whose respect/ trust you'd have to similarly earn, playing the different competing Fantasy factions off of each other. I still hope to make such a game someday. And no lie, there's only about six or seven games in existence with the 2.5D aesthetic of GTA2 in existence (top down perspective, Sprite based objects & actors in a 3D world). Two of which are also from the creators of Heretic, Raven Software! Those being Take No Prisoners & MageSlayer (Mage Slayer is similar in tone to Hexen & Heretic). The other games in this style are: GTA1, GTA2, Project Paradise, Machine Hunter, & Loaded for the PSX gets an honorary inclusion despite not being true top down (I include it because the Sprite Work Is based off of the same art limitation techniques of the time: taking shaded 3D model renders & converting them into 2D sprites due to engine limitations of the time, populating a top down 3D world with them). It's an aesthetic I absolutely love & feel definitely is deserving of having its legacy continued (funny thing is about half of the games on the list that I named also all came out in the year 1997)
Big thanks to Civvie for finally showing me this one. I didn't play Heretic back in the day, I was more for Doom and Quake. But when I heard this game actually is challenging, I was intrigued, because I'm one of those crazy fckers that enjoy pistol-starting Plutonia with fast monsters enabled (thanks to decino for showing me this.) I've played through it once now on black plague, enjoyed it, and yes, it's an absolute dick in some places, and have just started my wand-commenceth run on black plague. There's no HeretiCon, is there?
I had a thing for a while where I used to have a complete playthrough of Heretic every Xmas ;) and I was a very proficient player of all the 3D classics. Great video!
*Civvie talking about the Dragon Claw* "I'm gonna apologize in advance for that sound you're gonna hear it often" jokes on you Civvie i love that pew-pew sound of the Dragon Claw!
My favorite weapon, it wrecks Disciples of D'Sparil and stunlocks most enemies. It cleaves through low-level trash and even Iron Lich seems weak to it. I feel that Hell Staff is worse than this.
I unironically thought it was the most badass fps weapon as a kid, partly because of the sound. Id never heard ANYONE dislike the sound until civvie, which *shocked* me. 🙀
@@jakublulek3261 That is pure confirmation bias. The Dragon Claw deals more damage per ammo but it fires so much more slowly that its DPS doesn't even compare, and its stunlock is much worse as a result as well. It only has a leg up on the Hellstaff because A) it doesn't knock enemies to the sides, only back, and B) it can be fired from behind props that block projectiles, but not hitscan. Heck, not only does it _not_ deal extra damage to Iron Liches, they outright resist the rippers from its Tome version.
Doom clone can be seen as a term of endearment, rather than a derogatory jab at old games. Heretic is definitely one that skirts the "endearment" portion of that notion.
@Manek Iridius "Soulslike" does not describe a unique approach, or really a genre. It functions more or less exactly like "Doom clone," signifying a game that's similar to another game. "Dark Souls" is no more a genre than Doom.
@Manek Iridius Some fair points, I won't try to claim that "Soulslike" literally contains no information. So, if your standard for whether a term is worthwhile is just that it conveys some kind of information, then yeah sure. From a game crit perspective I guess, it's mostly just referring to aesthetic differences. Dark Souls could easily just tell you how to fight a boss explicitly (as a lot of games do, highlighting vulnerable points etc), & then it would just be a 2nd person action RPG. Dodge-rolling etc is a familiar, but not profound, gameplay element. I could go on all day so let me make one quick point to hopefully explain my perspective: "Turn-based strategy" gives some general information about the sort of game you're going to play. Same with "first-person shooter." "Soulslike" only makes sense if you already know what the term means, & from the perspective of critique, this is...not a very good term. It raises more questions than it answers. (This criticism also applies to "roguelike," it's worth mentioning.) As a way to easily refer to something that exists though, it's fine I guess, & if that's your standard for an acceptable term then fair enough. I definitely don't feel strongly enough about this to be all word-police about it.
I kinda am too! I wanna make a wad for it that makes it even *more* "Doom-Cloney," adding in Doom style equivalent type enemies, meaning weak hitscanners(Undead Elves with Elven Wands, Palette swapped & Sprite redesigned chaingunners to look like pale armor wearing Ogres armed with Dragon Claws, Undead Knights using the Cleric sprite from Hexen named "Arbelists" armed with the Etheral Crossbow, Mancubi style Strafe-Breaking dual projectile volley throwers, Necromancer type enemies like the Arch-Vile, Continuous Projectile Stream Attackers ala the Arachnotron, a new hit scan shotgun style wand weapon & an equivalent enemy, etc. If I ever got around to making such a wad, I would also rebalance some base Heretic enemies & weapons, maybe incorporate some enemies or weapons from Hexen, give every base Heretic weapon an Alt-Fire, as well as a "Contact Shot" attack like Hexen's Serpent Staff has. This would mean every single (ranged) weapon would now have at least 5 to 6 different attacks; 1: Base attack, 2: Alt Fire (at Greater Ammo Cost/Longer Cooldown/Reload), 3: Contact Shot (which could have a Unique Effect for every weapon, at the cost of requiring you to be physically touching the target to execute), 4: Tombed Atttack, 5: Tombed Alt-Fire, 6: Maybe even a Tombed Contact Shot. Such a range of potential attacks opens up a lot of opportunities for unique approaches to combat scenarios, & Heretic's whimsical fantasy setting opens the door for a lot of imaginative possibilities as to what these potential alternative attack variations could be. I just need to get patient enough to deal with the excessive Sprite Work required. I have the the obsessive Meticulous temperament needed for it, just not frustration tolerance & creativity fostering/ imagination fueling home environment for it at the moment
To be honest, i found the level design (for the most part anyway) to be better, more atmospheric and more complex, and it takes around 20/30 minutes per level to finish each one of them at 100%, the dark fantasy theme is also very nice, there are lots to like, no clue why civvie did not enjoyed it much, but to be fair that difficulty level seems like a nightmare Otherwise i would say Doom is the best
Eduardo Vilar I’ll have to disagree that Heretic is better than Doom, but I do think the Holy Trinity of Build games is better than anything on the Doom Engine.
@Manek Iridius Right there with you. I have tried Duke, Ion Fury, Blood. I realize all these games are great but to me they just seem boring for some reason. I wish someone could figure out what would cause that, because I really want to like these games and complete them.

The fact that you can only hang on to one of each powerup between levels encourages you to make use of them, nice going Raven.
I agree. It’s a very simple but smart tactic
Yep, that's a good design. Usually when stacking powerups is allowed (in any type of game), 95% of players just keep hoarding them "for the worst times", up until the final boss where they don't even burn through 50% of all the shit they've collected, and end up going "Welp, guess I needed to use these items a bit more often..." To avoid this, Raven is like "Ok, here's the deal, dipshit, we won't allow you to carry too much of this stuff, so now you can actually use it freely in order to make your life easier, as well as spare the protagonist's shoulders from hurting because he has to keep carrying all the junk throughout the whole game on your behalf."

Even Shadow Sphere is optional, provided you already killed all the gargoyles surrounding the first lich.

Funny that Black Plague is for me easier than Smite-meister because of that. Quicker monsters aren't that much trouble, and I always have ammo problems on Bringest them oneth and especially Smite-meister, so more ammo is welcomed.
Doom did that in Nightmare to help you deal with the respawning monsters. The problem is the monsters don't respawn here.
Hearing Civvie rip on this is just like
"But I liked heretic..."

Is that what what partial invis does? I thought it made them more likely to shoot off to the side or something
@@thezambambo2184 Basically, all enemy attacks/enemies themselves have a random chance to fire/aim in a completely random direction, not just to the side of you. "You don't give a shit about Heretic, you just want to see me suffer"
Touché
I wish more old school games used the tome of power concept.
It's an aesthetic I absolutely love & feel definitely is deserving of having its legacy continued (funny thing is about half of the games on the list that I named also all came out in the year 1997)
I think alt-fires replaced the Tome idea, but there's definitely untapped potential in it.
Big thanks to Civvie for finally showing me this one. I didn't play Heretic back in the day, I was more for Doom and Quake. The tome of power crossbow sounds vaguely like the wookiee bowcaster sound effect in Jedi Outcast/Academy. Also Raven shooter games.
Pro Intro when Civvie?!
Also, great ass comparison. Good info, that's the content why I'm subscribed.

wait... you made a "dungeon" level for a 10 second skit ? nice

What if the dungeon was always a Doom level?
@@yourewallsareveryconvenien8292 it's probably cv who made it, since from previous videos he has used doom editors and has knowledge on how doom works
@@CB66941 Ah shit....
Nothing like falling asleep to civvy complaining about game balance
I like how you semi-yell all the informations. Feels intense and that's fitting for this game.
Doom clone can be seen as a term of endearment, rather than a derogatory jab at old games. Heretic is definitely one that skirts the "endearment" portion of that notion.
Eh, doom clone is basically just old school "souls like"
I use to call Doom Clones those game that run on the Doom engine
(This criticism also applies to "roguelike," it's worth mentioning.)
As a way to easily refer to something that exists though, it's fine I guess, & if that's your standard for an acceptable term then fair enough. I definitely don't feel strongly enough about this to be all word-police about it.
I played Heretic last year and I find it great, even better than Doom and Doom II.
I guess I'm really a heretic guy.
If I ever got around to making such a wad, I would also rebalance some base Heretic enemies & weapons, maybe incorporate some enemies or weapons from Hexen, give every base Heretic weapon an Alt-Fire, as well as a "Contact Shot" attack like Hexen's Serpent Staff has. This would mean every single (ranged) weapon would now have at least 5 to 6 different attacks;
1: Base attack,
2: Alt Fire (at Greater Ammo Cost/Longer Cooldown/Reload),
3: Contact Shot (which could have a Unique Effect for every weapon, at the cost of requiring you to be physically touching the target to execute),
4: Tombed Atttack,
5: Tombed Alt-Fire,
6: Maybe even a Tombed Contact Shot.
To be honest, i found the level design (for the most part anyway) to be better, more atmospheric and more complex, and it takes around 20/30 minutes per level to finish each one of them at 100%, the dark fantasy theme is also very nice, there are lots to like, no clue why civvie did not enjoyed it much, but to be fair that difficulty level seems like a nightmare
Otherwise i would say Doom is the best

I’ll have to disagree that Heretic is better than Doom, but I do think the Holy Trinity of Build games is better than anything on the Doom Engine.
By the gods!! Thats heresy ☠

DEATH WISH HYPEEEE
It's about damn time
@Manek Iridius Right there with you. I have tried Duke, Ion Fury, Blood. I realize all these games are great but to me they just seem boring for some reason. I wish someone could figure out what would cause that, because I really want to like these games and complete them.
@Manek Iridius I know how you feel. Duke never grabbed my attention beyond episode 2, Blood wasn't fun and Shadow Warrior...
@Manek Iridius agreed. I love Doom engine games, but for some reason something about the gameplay feel of Build Engine games doesn't do it for me..
I played that when I was 10, and I was really afraid of the Iron Liches. They were scary as fuck.
18:57 That is some absolutely beautiful circle strafing right there.

Corvus: "Ripeth and tear-eth. Cheers mi'ladies" (oh wait that was Pirate talk-)
"It's not really hard, just tedious."
You're breaking my heart Civvie, I don't even know who you are anymore.
*1:* "Pro Heretic soon, fellow stalker!" "When?" *"N O W"*
*2:* Order of the Triad, you say? ...aaaand now I'm sad that Venture Bros got cancelled. Fucking Adult Swim...
*3:* Loved that Dungeons gag. This is why I love this goddamn channel, alongside the kinds of games it covers.
*4:* The Tome of Power is such a cool powerup that Amid Evil made it a core game mechanic. Functionally it's kinda like the Quad Damage, but with how it changes how the weapons work, it makes Quad Damage look like vanilla missionary with a side of plain toast in comparison. Once I finally start working on Duskrune, you bet your ass I'm gonna give Ralsei a Tome of Power/Soul Mode analogue later on, 'cause he's gonna have most of the magic weapons.
*5:* Yeowch. Now I remember why I only got so far into the expansion levels, even on the medium skill.
*6:* Oh Civvie, you spoil us! Pro Death Wish confirmed!

I was never into shooter games until, well, Half-Life - but I remember liking Heretic and Hexen a lot. Never came far or anything, but I liked the theme and the weapons were awesome.
