The fact Mariah was also nervous about singing live with Whitney and still ate says a lot. Those two are some of the best voices we’ve ever had!
Aside from being nervous, I think Whitney started improvising some parts, as she has more gospel roots than Mariah, who prefers a more rehearsed setting. David Foster said when he would play a melody for Whitney, she would often sing it a different way than what he asked, but it would often be better than what he asked for. Meanwhile, Celine would always give him exactly what he asked for. I'm guessing Mariah was very stunned when Whitney went impromptu at the climax, as she had to compliment Whitney's melody with the harmony, but Whitney was belting it out, adding some runs probably not heard in rehearsals, and at times rushing the tempo. Even when Mariah had to sing with Aretha Franklin, she felt a bit uncomfortable that Aretha chose not to do rehearsals, aside from singing with her idol. Aretha wanted to bring the church, and Mariah, who did not grow up singing gospel at church, but only listening and singing to gospel at home, obviously felt like a fish out of water. Regardless of the imperfection of this performance, this will forever remain an iconic moment in music history.

Mariah Carey the greatest voice of all time
One of the reasons they sound incredible together is because their vocal tone, although different, compensate for each other. Whitney’s heavy tone and powerful belting are firm and earth-like, while Mariah’s girly buttery tone and airy melisma are light and heaven-like. How lucky we are to be able to listen to this masterpiece!
P/s: Celine’s voice is ocean-like: deep and wide, serene and intense at the same time. If the Vocal Trinity perform a song together, we will have the perfect harmony of life: earth, heaven and ocean.

I mostly agree with this except I would personally place them on the same tier in terms of vocal greatness - not one over the other. Mariah definitely taking agility, range, and resonance, while Whitney is unmatched in power and her gorgeous head voice tones.
Mariah’s runs here are gorgeous and fast, and seemed to catch Whitney off guard. A rare time Houston was off.

For some reason, Mariah’s runs always made melodic sense and fit perfectly even live. Whitney did runs for the sake of runs. Even when Mariah tries to do runs for the sake of runs, they never once stray from the melody. Also, her tone is so sweet like honey. Those last few seconds show the difference between the two.
Yeah, I agree with your assessment of this Oscars duet. To me, Whitney sounded much stronger and fuller in the climax, but I didn’t care for a lot of her melismatic choices which at times, felt a little oversung and out of place. And I definitely know what you mean by that one jazzy run Whitney sang at 3:31, which I can really appreciate for the creativity but didn’t fit the gradual, harmonious, Disney-esque ending, in my humble opinion. With Mariah, I thought her belting was a lot more subdued here and not as powerful, but her runs were all so tasteful and fit the melody so perfectly. So the strength of one was the weakness of the other. A better showcase would be their Oprah duet - that was phenomenal and pretty close to flawless.
I agree, while Whitney was singing "when you belive" several times it started to sound a little repetitive, Mariah Run at that time 2:09 sounded too good

We all know they should've collaborated in 1994. It would've been a MASSIVE hit coming off the back of Bodyguard & Music Box successes. Instead, they both waited until their chart success & voices had cooled off a bit too much. We had to settle for MOR/AC scraps in 1998 & by then everyone had moved on to Celine as the diva du jour with Hip Hop and the late 90's Latin pop wave both hitting in earnest.

Overall, Mariah outshined Whitney with this performance, singing every note, high and low, and not missing a beat. It should be remembered that neither of the two were in their prime, Whitney's prime 1986-94, Mariah's prime 1990-96.
This can’t be the case because Mariah actually missed plenty of the notes with shaky intonation while Whitney’s was much more steady and precise. Also, the “high notes” are just shrill falsetto with very bad accuracy (she couldn’t hit the high note dead on and had to scale up there).

Was the key lowered here? The instumental sounds different as in slightly lower? Also this was a iconic performance but oprah was far better for both of them.
Yes definitely a lower key than the original recording. And I agree, the Oprah performance was much better, possibly in part because I’d imagine performing at the Oscars was incredibly stressful - even more so than performing the duet on Oprah for the first time.

Whitney must be high as hell in this performance. Her runs were obviously so over the place and full of improvisations and obviously, not in the studio version, and she missed again the "but when you blinded by your pain", just like in Oprah.

I can definitely appreciate that unique jazzy run on its own because it’s so creative, but I personally didn’t love it in the context of this song because it threw me off for the gradual and harmonious ending. I much preferred how they ended it in their Oprah duet. But hey, we all have different tastes and all valid 🙂

Very possible that Mariah’s microphone was turned down but it just as could’ve been an off day for her power belting. Mariah definitely shined the most in her agility, range, and tasteful choice of runs, whereas Whitney outshined her in the belting. I’d have to disagree on what you said about power because Whitney definitely had the more powerful voice. I think most people can agree that Mariah’s strengths are her agility, range, resonance, and transitions, whereas Whitney’s strengths were in the sheer power and weight of her voice, as well as her gorgeous head voice. It’s because their voices have their unique strengths and differences that make them such a perfect fit for vocal blending. A light, resonant, agile voice paired with a soulful, rich, powerful voice - just magic.
