Simon Cowell said Whitney Houston songs are very hard to sing but Mariah Carey sings are suicide .. really says it all , she's my icon my life my breath she saved me so many times
Desmond Crawford mariah songs are much harder due to the fact they have very complex melsimas and runs while constantly having to change keys and registers from chest to head, its even harder for mariah as she goes to her “ whisper” register. youd need to have atleast a 4 octave vocal range to perfectly execute a mariah carey song.

So many 'couch singers' constantly critiquing Mariah and then wondering why she's refrained from giving us live vocals for a while now. *We don't deserve them*
This song, is not only a song, it's a heartfelt poem crafted in the most elegant form: with grace. This performance is regal her mannerisms, her look, her effort, her voice, her tone and on top of it all, the beautiful almost spiritual nature of the song itself. If only one song in her entire career deserved a Grammy, it would be Butterfly.
This song is very hard to sing. It requires so much breathe control. Miss Mariah your voice is like the wind...gentle like a summers breeze, but as powerful as any hurricane. 💕
2:56 do u see how far she has to go away from the mic to hit that "fly" note?? coz its not only high but its a super loud note, if u guys are familiar to singing u can understand that hitting high notes are very hard if u dont have the range, but if u have it then hitting them loud its what makes it an acomplishment, hitting them loud n on point like she did in here n in the record is just very hard, for me the climax of this song is one of the hardest to do of her songs cos of the loudness of the notes and the long melismatic runs she does plus sustaning the notes longer... damn!!! she's a beast.
Yes indeed its a trick and a technique so that the note that youre going to hear isnt bad and ear shattering. Becoz that note is big she needs to distant her /mouth from the mic in making that particular note.
Hitting a high note loud isn't the challenge, having the ability to control it is. Most can hit high notes loud (yell it), but unable to control the dynamics of it. Most singers take their head away from the mic to smooth out imperfections.

Difficult for her to sing because she has to do Pitch Fluctuation, Vibrato Sustaining and Breathes. Coloraturas can't do Vibrato Sustaining. That's an Contralto Altino Countertenor Technique.
I love this song. I don’t care how many people think it’s hard...I feel free and happy especially at the “FLY” part and I feel that emotional release of all the negativity in my life. I love how this particular song has touched so many people. Even though it might be romantic...a lot of people interpreted as letting go of anyone special in your life..whether it’s a friend, mother, brother, sibling, ANYONE. I think that’s beautiful
Butterfly is extremely difficult to sing because of three techniques: Pitch Fluctuation, Vibrato Sustaining and Breaths. Coloratura Sopranos can't sustain Vibratos.

I love this so much her voice was everything her outfit was perfect her side eye was perfect lol. She's like girl bye. I loved this era so much. Always imitated never duplicated. I haven't been a fan of anybody since the early 2000s. The artists out today can't do it like she did. Flawlessly and feeling the emotions of the songs like she did at that time. Nobody can touch that vocal range either. No artist today can do this.
What makes Mariah still so great, no matter how strained her vocal chord, is her band and her back-up singers. Their brilliance lets Mariah remain in her place in this business and in this world. To me, as an artist and musician, no matter how I adore Beyonce and Christina, Mariah Carey is still the BEST. What I know now about what I love to do so much in my life, which is singing, I owe to her. More power, Mariah!

97-98 were the years when MC's voice started deteriorating, perhaps she strained it so much during her music box and daydream world tour where she was at her prime in singing live performances. Well, at that point in her career she had nothing to prove, she was already a legend.
I love how the audience are so quiet it seems there's none. Too stunned and bewitched by Maria's angelic voice and beauty. And then after she sang, they cheered like they snapped and came back to their senses.
Can forgot she doesn't put it close to her face. Cause when she lip she puts her arms close to her face lol, and also she's lipping if her face looks relaxed :3
Packs a raw, emotional wallop by combining her personal, poetic lyrics with vocals that are both restrained & explosive. This song achieves a rare beauty & melancholy.
Mariah writes songs in the level of a vocalist she is. This song truly is a lyrical and melodical masterpiece. The runs and inflections fit the theme and title of the song
Spectacular! I believe after this song was released was the first time I heard the term "vocal suicide". Not for Mimi obviously, but anyone else trying to sing it.
this is the song when you let go of someone. It is painful and sad, but she sings tge wisdom of letting go. She transformed those feelings of hurt into something that is beautiful. "but I will stand and say goodbye, for you'll never be mine until you know the way it feels to fly". To say this to urself and to somebody is truly a mastery of ones emotions.
No one can write and sing such song other than MC. The depth of emotions in these lyrics don’t come by anymore in today music. Every time I hear her sing butterfly it triggers so much emotions within me.....💓Mariah!!
Her tone here is so beautiful. The switch between her breathy voice and chest voice was so drastic. Its like 2 completely different singers. This & SNL are the best _Butterfly_ performances, that are 100% live.
what you see here is a genius at work! the intricate mixture of low notes, mixed register(full voice+falsetto), belts, enough to make any singer cry w/ jealousy The teeth clenching you see is her consciously making an effort to keep the projection of the sounds AWAY from the throat aka correct singing placement I also think you will not find many singers attempting the "FLY" high note at the end of "until you know the way it feels..." studio or live -She has laid the bible for aspiring singers

OMG. Thank you Jesus for bringing Mariah Carey to the world! She's the best!
She hit the notes perfectly. A beautiful performance.
3:10 somebody's doin' the wrong note (silent edition w/ laser eyes).
HAHAHAH LMAAOO
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Mariah : If you do it next time, woe betide you
lolll
LMAO hahahahaa. That was the agreement, she'd only see them with the eyes after the vanishing performance 😂
Omg hahaha 😂!!!
i believe this song even without whistle register is one of her hardest song to sing due to long run of each verse
this is really the hardest song to sing. no question!
sou true! i Love you :)
SaluteTheRoyalThrone falsetto ,Airy mixed and the killer climax(studio version is impossible to duplicate ,her run is too fast and very complex she used legato on chest voice and dat’s very very hard technique) no one on this planet can sing this song except herself
Difficult for her to sing because she has to do Pitch Fluctuation, Vibrato Sustaining and Breathes.
Coloraturas can't do Vibrato Sustaining. That's an Contralto Altino Countertenor Technique.
Not even she can do. it. And btw, it's not to fast for people who have agility.
This performance gives me the chills every single time. Truly flawless, the best singer, song writer of our generation.
3:10 " WHY THE F*** DID I PUT THESE HIGH NOTES IN THIS SONG??!... JESUS"
No she was pissed her back up signer screwed up!
You don't know why??? Because her songs are ONLY meant to be sang by a MARIAH. No one else can! Nuff said.
LMAO Yes
Butterfly is extremely difficult to sing because of three techniques: Pitch Fluctuation, Vibrato Sustaining and Breaths.
Coloratura Sopranos can't sustain Vibratos.
Zhivargo L. Laughing over here 🤣
Loved that she did the whole thing live, the imperfections are what makes this performance simply beautiful.
True... I can only agree.. The emotions too
My favorite live performance of any singer. Her voice is simultaneously fragile and powerful and you can feel her working. She delivers 💯
The One And Only.. THE QUEEN Mariah Carey
tru! one n only Mimi she s amazing
Alexandru Patru is the Queen *-*
truly one of the best. a songwriter by heart.
LISTENING TO THE ORIGINAL I WANTED TO KNOW IF MARIAH IS REALLY HUMAN and by this live performance, she is not. HARD SONG.
What do you mean by not human? What do mean you wanted to know if she was human?
@@ashjac0009 it’s a joke lol meaning she can’t be real holding these notes like the song itself. It’s a compliment in the form of a joke 🤣
@@kaleenajean Really?
@@kaleenajean It's identical to the studio version ... You must be drunk
@@honestperson3042 she’s literally saying that this song is impossible to sing so she came to see if Mariah could really sing it live and she did... meaning she is not human because a human couldn’t sing this amazing. You guys are slow lol
my fav live performance of this song!! this might possibly be my top 5 songs of mariah
2:47 "For you'll NEVER BE MIIINE!!"
GOOSEBUMPS YALL
The words in the songs she writes she one of the best writers i love her forever and she sung these songs effortlessly beautiful omg no other
That woman totaly blew me away, when that song came out, that album went, two times platinum not surprising, amazing vocals. They said she was done, she back even harder.
The resonance on the 'FLY' high note 😍🤯😭
One of my favorite live performances ever
I love this so much her voice was everything her outfit was perfect her side eye was perfect lol. She's like girl bye. I loved this era so much. Always imitated never duplicated. I haven't been a fan of anybody since the early 2000s. The artists out today can't do it like she did. Flawlessly and feeling the emotions of the songs like she did at that time. Nobody can touch that vocal range either. No artist today can do this.
She included this live version in her Butterfly: 25th Anniversary Expanded Edition album released today.
This performance.
This is one of my fav songs. I love it - the lyrics, the melody, the progression. Mariah is a songwriting goddess.
Her voice is pure magic
Her most beautiful song in my opinion. I cry literally every time I listen to it.
There’s not enough air in this world to sing this song!!
2:51 she takes a deeeeeep breath before she begins the slayage.
This is a difficult song to sing live. So underrated
So many awesome performances like this, I can forgive her pretty much anything, even that NYE debacle. She was/is truly magical when she's in the zone!
The most elastically omnipotent vocalist to
exist!! Not to mention crazy gifted songwriter. Mariah is I. C. O. N. I. C. 😭😭❤️❤️🦋 #L4L
This performance is beyond MOST people ability to comprehend. Mariah Carey, your beauty, talent and vocal prowess will forever be unmatched in my lifetime. True living Legend, Icon. Thank you for making my 90s music nostalgia such sweet joy! ILY.
Still listening and enjoying in 2024!
This song holds a lot of sentimental memories for me. Beautifully sung by the one and only Mariah Carey.
This is most amazing live performance ever.
Her expression speaks so much about how hard this song is
Mesmerized by this song live performance ... goosebumps, butterfly in stomache everything on it.. she is a bomb! For sure this song will linger for thousand of thousand years....Mariah is Mariah the Queen Diva of all time :-) Hail the queen!
97-98 were the years when MC's voice started deteriorating, perhaps she strained it so much during her music box and daydream world tour where she was at her prime in singing live performances. Well, at that point in her career she had nothing to prove, she was already a legend.
Girl bye.
I love how the audience are so quiet it seems there's none. Too stunned and bewitched by Maria's angelic voice and beauty. And then after she sang, they cheered like they snapped and came back to their senses.
I know this was a hard performance , but Mimi did what Mimi does best and she did amazing
One of the perfect demonstrations where Mariah can execute the whispery voice perfectly. Masterpiece this is.
The way to tell if Mariah is singing live is to watch her left arm. She moves it around all the time if it's live.
We know when she lip-sync when she moves her head more then her hand...
+William Mattiace 😂😂
Can forgot she doesn't put it close to her face. Cause when she lip she puts her arms close to her face lol, and also she's lipping if her face looks relaxed :3
i absolutely LOVE this song. used to listen to this song and album every day when it came out 20 years ago.
The Greatest Vocalist of all time.
Omg her face in the climax....we feel the difficulties even she did it
Packs a raw, emotional wallop by combining her personal, poetic lyrics with vocals that are both restrained & explosive. This song achieves a rare beauty & melancholy.
Fly butterfly ! Mariah you are the greatest
the humming sound at the beginning is love.
This is perfection of the voice human
this is the song when you let go of someone.
The Best vocalist all time!
She is a history.. No one can really replace her onstage.. A world's pride..
No one can write and sing such song other than MC. The depth of emotions in these lyrics don’t come by anymore in today music. Every time I hear her sing butterfly it triggers so much emotions within me.....💓Mariah!!
this song is soooo haaardd, so many falsettos, high falsettos, strong breath support ,ugh queen
I like her when she hit high notes, belting with full force.
My favorite Mariah song. So powerful & beautiful! Theyre so lucky to have been able to see her perform it live.
this song is extremely hard to song
sing*
yeah, thanks.
I love Mariah..She has so much soul.. She puts her heart in this performance.. truly a legend.
Her tone here is so beautiful. The switch between her breathy voice and chest voice was so drastic. Its like 2 completely different singers. This & SNL are the best _Butterfly_ performances, that are 100% live.
what you see here is a genius at work! the intricate mixture of low notes, mixed register(full voice+falsetto), belts, enough to make any singer cry w/ jealousy
The teeth clenching you see is her consciously making an effort to keep the projection of the sounds AWAY from the throat aka correct singing placement
I also think you will not find many singers attempting the "FLY" high note at the end of "until you know the way it feels..." studio or live -She has laid the bible for aspiring singers
she really fought so hard with her nodules here. nodules tried to block her voice but raspy strained yet powerful resonant like a beautiful came out to flyyyyyyyy
Mariah Carey is a true artist, singer and song writer
This is her hardest song to sing by a mile. She can barely do it herself live. Absolutely amazing.
Mariah Carey not only has a beautiful singing voice and beautiful song writing talent, but also a beautiful soul.
