    I had a 92 RMX. Super fun. Got it not running in great shape, cleaned carb an tank, new petcock, rear shock rebuild, oil change, fresh gas and started right up. Rode for a summer then did the top end and sold it.

    Those were detuned from a regular rm250 from what I remember every year they were in production. I remember you could use a rm250 head gasket from earlier years cause the rmx one was extra thick to lower compression

    Wossner makes a piston PN8022D050: Bore size: 67.50, Piston size: 67.44. Other companies offer the same. You don't have to have it bored out, you need the correct tools to measure a cylinder, it shows you how to measure in the service manual. This machine needs a new power valve (cleaned) seal kit installed, there's too much fuel/oil mix leaking into the chamber.

    • @2vintage
      @2vintage  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I re measured and it was bored out to a 67.5mm. We are just going to hone the cylinder and install the correct size piston. The powervalves will be gone through and cleaned. Where would you get a seal kit for the powervalves?

    • @noreaster4194
      @noreaster4194 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@2vintage Get rid of those 2 piece RMX powervalves they break easily and have a limiter that keeps them from opening fully. Which is partially why the bike feels very underpowered besides the bad compression. RM250 powervalves from 89 to I believe 92 will bolt right into that cylinder. My '90 RMX250 has '91 RM250 powervalves in it and the powerband really fuckin hits! They are only 1 piece not counting the guide.

      Again I'd say it depends. My old suzuki katana 50 had a nasty score in the cylinder wall. A score not a scratch. Deep enough to catch a fingernail in no problem. I managed to polish it out with a drill and a home made hone tool. The plating was unbelievably thick on that cylinder. The stock rings had way too much gap afterwards so I had to find oversized ones. it ran the best it ever had for a solid 2k more miles (I beat the shit out of it daily) and it cost me sod all to fix really. You you mentioned the power valve adjustment might be wrong. You really have to make sure that the power valves are not hanging down into the exhaust Port so that they make contact with a piston and rings. There will be an adjustment specification and the brake manual. And you need to follow what they say in that procedure. Otherwise if the piston and rings hit a power valve it's going to be ugly. More than that performance of the engine will suffer if the power valve is not adjusted properly.

    I bet he did not hone, I bet he home bored it, a quick hone breaks the glazing to created cross hatch, honing for an hour to try to remove scratches is uneven boring. I am unsure if Suzuki used chrome cylinders in 96, he may have took the chrome off, this cylinder may have to be sleeved, I don't believe a chromed cylinder can be bored, the metal under may be too soft, but I don't know that for sure. Joe, I have 1989 Suzuki Rm 250 that was just rebuilt. It lacks power especially compared to my 1982 Suzuki RM 250.
    Maybe the power valves are not opening up completely. The mechanic that rebuilt it said the carb might be gummed up ( I am thinking the Reed valves).

    Too many people take short cuts on rebuilds!
    Most younger ones DO NOT understand two stroke expansion chamber exhaust systems!!!!
    A lot of people DO NOT understand how a good two stroke engine works, the world was too quick to condemn two strokes, basically 3 moving parts piston conrod crankshaft! 4 strokes have way MORE moving parts!!!!
    There is a REAL SCIENCE making a GOOD pipe!!!! Means the difference between average power and REALLY GOOD POWER!!!!

  • @johncoleman2495

    This bike has nothing in common with a 96 RM250. The engine is a detuned version of the old case reed RM engine from the early 90's. They had lower compression (thicker head gasket), stock pipes were restricted, smaller carbs, and even had a throttle stop to prevent the slide from opening all the way. They had much softer suspension, a generator stator(for lights) iirc a few other small differences. Suzuki basically ignored this bike from right after it's introduction seldom updating it. And when they did it was never to the extent the RM was. They did accept many RM parts and woke up considerably when those changes were made. At one point Suzuki offered a kit with the bike.

  • @takedeadaim8671
    @takedeadaim8671 ปีที่แล้ว

    You really need some instruments to accurately measure pistons and honed bores. But the ring gap and thee way that piston flopped around I would say someone was in there without proper tools and then tried a stock piston in a honed out bore.

    word of advise on those old suzuki motors. Suzuki spec'd the wrong ( short i think) bolt for the primary gear. it has a bad habit of walking itself out and chewing up the case. when the gear wobbles off, it also will tear up the splines on the crank. Its a good idea to pop the side case, and check the condition of that bolt and the cup washer. sometimes they were installed upside down.
    the gear should have holes, so its a pretty simple mod to drill a safety wire hole to secure the bolt for good.

      @@crswro1690 so far the knowledge and skills shown here will eventually cause its permanent death and thats too bad ...the bottom and top end needs to be completely rebuild before you ever try to start up an old engine that is becoming unobtanium ...i see no checking of the run out on the crank .crank seals where not tested for pressure or vacuum ..the carb is not the original which there is a good chance that it can run too lean in the mid range ..and he says he will ride it so more to fined out ...if its too lean you will know in about 30 seconds riding it wfo ..he said he is sending the cylinder out to have bored out ..its a nikasil coated cylinder ...boring it out and its ruined ..there is no such thing as over sized pistons for the same reason ..
      But for , $300 bucks the old cylinder can be totally restored to oem specs ..and is the only possible way if you are wanting your handy work to last longer that a week
