  • Collecting various colorful minerals (Malachite, Azurite, Calcite, Aragonite, etc.) from a historic Silver and Gold mine in the Tintic Mining District of Utah. A group of rockhounds, with permission of the mine owner (this is a private claim) were able to dig the dumps in search of these colorful minerals and take in some of the history of the site!
The Centennial Eureka Mine was operated from 1875 to 1955 as underground workings that produced Silver, Gold and Copper, among other prized minerals. Portions of the main mine head-frame are still standing and sit impressively overlooking the small mine town of Eureka, Utah.

Does it cost to go rock hounding there? Or is it open to public?

Sadly, it’s private property. I’ve been fortunate to be able to go with a group that know the land owner and have permission to collect.
