I’ve never understood the misconception about the watchmen being rats. Have you forgotten the lurkers are literally rats, and that natural wolves still exist in the wilds of Russia?
from a purely visual standpoint, they have significantly more in common morphologically with rats than dogs. like, significantly more. there are certain physical traits like claws with clear opposable thumbs, not paws. same goes for the hind legs too, they are clearly not paws. their ability to easily stand on their hind legs is also a trait that it shares with rats, not dogs. also, pack hunting is a trait that can be developed. we developed pack hunting, it was not natural to hominids. yes, we were social, but we were scavengers before we were organized pack hunters. since rats are also group scavengers, its not a stretch to say that they could also develop the same pack hunting adaptation. if you, for whatever reason, genuinely cannot draw the connections between these and rats, either you must not have functioning eyes or you have never seen a dog before. these are clearly not dogs. the most concrete connection to dogs he cited were that they were pack hunters lol, thats nowhere near enough to draw a conclusion as the physical characteristics much more resemble rats or another species of rodent than dogs. it seems as though whenever roanoke talks about wolves, he gets something wrong. from genuinely still believing that alpha males in wolf packs were anything but myth to thinking that dogs look like rodents, its clear that his opinion isnt entirely reliable.

supposedly, there was something different with the bombs that may have induced evolution along with the radiation, as to what that actually is, I haven't found it yet but I am still looking for it
At some point in the Metro's lore it was stated that Kremlin was hit with biological weaponry, thus creating the Biomass in the bunker underneath it. So it probably could've changed local nature quite a bit in a short period of time.
He could’ve been attacked by a larger mangy dog, and since he hasn’t been exposed to dogs in such a long time the memory was altered over time into something more familiar.

these developers put a lot of time and effort and study into their zoo of animals in these games..an in depth knowledge of zoology, biology and kinesiology ...and mechanical movements of them too..you have to be impressed with their efforts for sure..it makes sense in the roles that these monsters play..just another stellar effort to produce a fantastic game..thanks for these videos..
I love these Metro lore vids! May I suggest you do vids on the electric anomalies and the Novosibirsk anomaly? Perhaps even a vid on the supernatural aspects? The invisible watchers? The politics of the Metro? I can’t get enough of these fantastically well done vids.
the thing I don't get is that huge amounts of uncontrolled radiation can produce unpredicted mutations, I want to know how these watchmen all look similar, isn't there supposed to be different breeds, different types and classes of watchmen considering how unpredicted the mutations can be?
perhaps mutations induced many different creatures at the beginning, but only the successful mutations were around 20 years later, like a quick form of natural selection
Adding on to Roanoke's comment, the time in the game is a factor too. The main character existed before the war and during it. He was very young as well. So from the start of the war to present day, that's more than 20 years of radiation and natural selection. Given those two things, they breed and the successful are the ones who survive. So it's bound to be that there's cross-breeding and these creatures could be a large mix of canines with some prominent features.
The other species/mutations may of also been expelled from the area due to disliking the climate or lack of prey/food. There could be even larger watchmen for example out their who left Moscow because there favourite prey migrated elsewhere. Thus new species moved in while others died and flourished due to a change in the ecosystem which is clearly imbalanced in metro.
Dude, just let me give a respectful pointer in the Asari race, those sneaky lasses seem to have some sort of subtle psychological manipulation that they appear to be having the features of whatever race is looking at them. This can be observed in action in the first Mass Effect when a turian and a salarian patron at the strip club argue over an asari dancer, more specifically if it looks like one or the other. Or was two other race? The point is, SOMEHOW they appear to have the features of a different race FOR EVERYONE. I mean a human, a turian and a salarian has VERY different facial structures, and the asaris look oddly humanoid for such a realistic setting. So my point is I think we don't actually know how they look like really. Even weirder this effect seem to persist even in images of asari, which can be observed in Mass Effect 2 if you wooed Liara in 1 and imported your save, there is a picture of her on your desk. Which truly boggles my mind and all kinds of lovecraftian warning bells go off in my mind about "sexy females, who seems to be attractive for literally everyone, regardless of race, gender, or any sort of previous encounter". It might be that you know a way it's biologically possible for something to be sexy for literally everything EVEN IN PICTURE, but I'd like to point to another possible explanation, the Rekni. The Rekni has telepathy. How? Beats the fuck outta me. But the queens telepathic ability is strong enough to manipulate a DEAD asari into a sort of speaking device to communicate with Sheperd in Mass Effect 1 AND hear his answers AND understand it. Also Liara literally shared her memories and consciousness with Shepard to help him decipher the message from the beacon in Mass Effect 1. So since it's clearly established that telepathy is real, and the asari has it, it might be that it's some sort of subconscious (or conscious, and it's just low effort, and they use it practically constantly) telepathic suggestion, that's so strong that it affects and alters peoples perception even after leaving the presence of the asari.
yea, i probably would, cant really afford anything rn though. Guess ill just replay the dead space trilogy, speaing of which dead space morphology was the thing leading me to your channel
The Watchmen have always reminded me of the packs of wild dogs/pseudodogs in STALKER. It'd be interesting to see some lore on STALKER as well. It still is up for debate whether the two series are in the same universe.
i prefer the facial design of the watchmen from the first 2 games as opposed to Exodus. i believe they appeared much more savage and dangerous in the first 2 games with how wild their teeth and eyes appeared.
I support the dog/wolf theory, apart from the evidence you presented, in the novel when artyom is alone on the surface he's being chased by serveral dog-like monsters, which I assume the game's watchers are based on, and they behave like wolves (stalking the prey, moving cautiously, etc... actually that part is probably on of the creepiest in the entire novel)
I'm not sure if you know this but you can find a watchman mother protecting her pups during the first time up top the with Dominic. If you like me on my first play killed them you'll find the pups are most rat like in appearances compared to an adult watchman with being born without fur and are pink.
Great analysis! Definitely do sound more like canines. I was hoping you'd touch on their similarity to Lurkers. Are the Lurkers baby Watchmen? Or are the Lurkers the REAL mutated rats?
Roanoke Gaming I can't help but imagine it's like some sharks in that it'll eat stuff that it can't even digest as we have seen when they pull tin cans and liscense plates out of the stomach of sharks
The howling when you are near, ringing the dinner Bell in a sense, leads me to believe that they are coyotes. I live in an area with packs of coyotes and they do the same thing when they find food.
You had me convinced for a little bit, and granted, this subject isn't even anything I've pondered before, but this is a tough one. At around 5:30 you mention a few things that rats don't do, but if you actually look at them, they do something that dogs seldom do, but is very common amongst most types of small rodents: it stands up on its hind legs with its "arms" tucked close to the body. Besides that, the overall body language and animations seem to me to be a clear hint towards rats, especially in the walk animations, with its body and especially head relatively low and close to the ground with the joints in its legs significantly bent, as well as the sprint which looks more like a sequence of skips or jumps just like a rat would run, as opposed to a canine which would keep its body and head relatively steady and level to the ground even when running. However.. I agree with many of the other things you mention, so, yet again, this is a tough one. I'm also a complete amateur when it comes to this and am quite possibly talking out of my ass, so take what I say with a grain of salt.
Roanoke Gaming Cazador’s are from Fallout New Vegas and they are nasty all things considered. They are enlarged tarantula hawk spider wasps add to the fact that their sting can make a grown man cry for his mother and Fallouts density for mutated creatures I imagine the sting is far more effective since they were created at the Big Mountain research facility in the hopes of using them for war against the Chinese. There are two unique variants that are a bit tougher than most the Legendary Caz located at Silver Peak Mine being humongous and a more poisonous variation in Big Mt. If anything I hope that this helps ^^
Roanoke Gaming can’t help but wonder just to what extent a watchmens intelligence goes since it may allow them to be taught how to use tools thanks to their hands. This plus taming means they could be used for many more functions than just killing, again depending on intelligence. Same might go for nosalisis to a lesser degree.
You should be proud of your videos! They're very interesting but the thing I like most about them is how sincerer you are. You're making videos about things you like because you want to, something that is found less and less these days. Again, you should be proud of all of it!
Then there was me, playing hardcore ranger difficulty on survivor mode, near beat, filterless, and ammoless all through the initial encounter of the dark one. Let's just say, it was real *dark* for my sanity once Pavel decided to uh, "*dismiss*" my existence.
They seem more dog liked in rat like. Makes you wonder is radiation causing these mutations in these animals or was it more than just nukes that were dropped?
there is a watchmen act in the theater, the trainer makes the watchmen to jump from a chair to another, which is curious, because those tricks are only performed by leons and not dogs... not even rats.
Based on the way how they stand and 'watch', I actually think they may very well be a species of Mongoose, actually. Pack hunter that scouts areas that's mid of food chain.
well the lurker worked....kind of haha I believe it would be like now, Hamsters are domesticated but not too many shrews, but dogs were more easily trained, may it would carry over into their mutated form?
Demons are my fav and oh damn when you said fish that's what I thought when I fist saw that face because to me it looked like The Creature from the Blacklogoon.
I know I am a bit late on the topic (and apologies if I make assumptions as I have never played or seen much gameplay of the metro series) but is there a way that he watchmen could perhaps be originated by a small primate rather then a dog or rat? The traits of them being social, having problem-solving intelligence, grasping forearms also used as legs for running, climbing, being omnivorous, standing on their hind legs, howling/screeching to it's troop, ect.? Yes, I would agree that the tail is a bit shorter and the head is very mishappen but, going off of some monkeys that exist, I would say it isn't too far off to be impossible with the radiation. That is just how I personally viewed the critter without knowing much of Metro or it's lore haha
Some people have suggested monkeys but the main issue is the population is HUGE after only 20 years for a handful of monkeys to make, but alot of people keep dogs was my thinking on it
I always got ferret vibes from the watchmen. The elbows and face match up slightly better. There is potential that they are a non solitary members of the mustelid family such as an otter.
The coincidences today! I wanna work with genetics in molecular biology which is what im studying for, finds a channel about a scientist. Videogames are a huge part of my life, finds a scientist who loves talking about videogames. The metro books, games and other post apocalyptic from slavic culture are flawless to me, finds a scientist who loves talking about videogames that i love. Dead Space, Gears of War and Halo were a huge part of my childhood to, finds a channel who loves talking about even more games i love. And there are many things you posted in this channel that feels like a massive coincidense, not just these two games...…….WERE WE SEPARATED AT BIRTH OR SOMETHING?! xD
Roanoke Gaming Lol, to be honest, your along the lines of what i want my life to be in the future. Not exacly the same, but damn is it scary close xD Btw, do you know of a game called warframe? Would be awesome to see videos on the grineer or the infested in that game!
That Moment when These guys are coming in packs but you Never leave your autoshotty when going on the surface .... yes i do feel sorry for my enemies sometimes xD
I lean slightly more towards massively mutated rat, but, Dog to Watchman would be a shorter process, at one point I thought they might be a descendant of one or more monkey species, but, it seems the Watchmen have lost to many traits you think a monkey would find advantageous for living in a Post-Apocalyptic city, and that's assuming they could survive winter in Russia with their climate controlled zoo enclosures destroyed or non-functional

these developers put a lot of time and effort and study into their zoo of animals in these games..an in depth knowledge of zoology, biology and kinesiology ...and mechanical movements of them too..you have to be impressed with their efforts for sure..it makes sense in the roles that these monsters play..just another stellar effort to produce a fantastic game..thanks for these videos..
I think you should be forbidden from making puns from this point on...
Oh common you KNOW that was a good pun!
You could say that didn't pun out well.
@@SnlDrako why do i deserve the PUNishment
This is the worst thread in here... xD
@@Morgvl_Grim_Hive You've tuned into the wrong PUNisher movie kiddo.
I didn't think a Dead Space quote could be so applicable, but on Metro mutants:
"They're not monsters, they're animals."
Yesss !!! More METRO !!! love every video on that topic and every video of your's as well !!!
I am glad to hear that!
I think I heard one of the npc stalkers say something about larger herds of watchmen with up to 300 members
Please please Please! Do the little stingray birds
I am actually currently trying to figure out what those are and if I can get some good footage of them!
@@RoanokeGaming please let me know if I can help in any way!
You mean the radioactive crows?
Do all the misc creatures
What even are those anyway? They're so cool looking
I find it interesting how all animals for the most part grew immensely with the radiation when in reality it usually stunts flesh and growth
i think its dogs since there already are rats in the metro i mean it could be a diffrent kind of rodent but i still believe its a dog
I love these Metro lore vids!
May I suggest you do vids on the electric anomalies and the Novosibirsk anomaly? Perhaps even a vid on the supernatural aspects? The invisible watchers? The politics of the Metro?
I can’t get enough of these fantastically well done vids.
BulletKingIsHere Tesla? Haha. It seems almost sentient. Hence why I’d like to see Roanoke do a vid.
Well...they’re doggos and I hope you can tame one in the upcoming game
how cool would that be!
You and both
Everybody gangsta till they hear a watchmen howl
No seriously that howl gives me chills
the thing I don't get is that huge amounts of uncontrolled radiation can produce unpredicted mutations, I want to know how these watchmen all look similar, isn't there supposed to be different breeds, different types and classes of watchmen considering how unpredicted the mutations can be?
perhaps mutations induced many different creatures at the beginning, but only the successful mutations were around 20 years later, like a quick form of natural selection
It was a biological weapon, not a pure nuclear one.
"watch's to pick out the oldest and weakest"
proceeds to pick the hardest man to kill in the metro
Tbh, I don’t know if this makes sense but your voice makes me less scared for some reason. Especially with dead space 💀
Knowledge kills fear! but I think you are the first person to ever say that haha
*_They look like a rat got jiggy with a Boxer and got a major growth spurt._*

Roanoke Gaming Holy shit you still reply to comments
Imagine mass effect lore mate pls consider that because I would binge watch the absolute hell out of that!
mass effect is planned for the future!
Roanoke Gaming you absolute ledgend much appreciation from your only Aussie viewer!
+Roanoke Gaming Only the animals or the aliens aswell?
i don´t know if i would get hooked to a mass effect lore series, but i do admit i would love to see a reapers video
I lost my little packmate last Tuesday
Mate, at around 9:30 you forgot the metric system again :D
CRAP.
Metric just complicates things ,
I think exodus gives a more distinct and obvious correlation between the mutant and real world creatures at least in appearance
Bro your voice is so soothing😂
haha thanks man! I am glad people think so because personally its nails on the chalkboard to me!
Na my voice is more like that lol
Maybe not!
So Where'd you get your.... Dog?
Oh, Rufus?
Yeah he's a rescue, we found him limping after he had a run-in with a Russian yao-guai.
Do a creature from bloodborn or dark souls
I told my dog she was a good pack mate and she looked at me like I offended her great ancestors
Good video! excited for the rhino one
Thank you! I am excited to make it!
I've never known much about the metro universe, your channel is pretty much what got me interested in it, and so far i love it.
if you enjoy games with great story lines I bet you would enjoy metro!
yea, i probably would, cant really afford anything rn though. Guess ill just replay the dead space trilogy, speaing of which dead space morphology was the thing leading me to your channel
The books aren’t half bad either.
The Watchmen have always reminded me of the packs of wild dogs/pseudodogs in STALKER. It'd be interesting to see some lore on STALKER as well. It still is up for debate whether the two series are in the same universe.
Dang your channel is growing fast
its settling down now but it definitely was!
i prefer the facial design of the watchmen from the first 2 games as opposed to Exodus. i believe they appeared much more savage and dangerous in the first 2 games with how wild their teeth and eyes appeared.
Person: Oh my god your pug is so cute!
Their pug:
Russian Version of DC's Watchmen
somehow more horrifying haha
This music has me on edge and listening for the first JoJo's Bizarre Adventures theme
I think they're kinda cute, I wouldn't mind trying to domesticate one.
I'm not sure if you know this but you can find a watchman mother protecting her pups during the first time up top the with Dominic. If you like me on my first play killed them you'll find the pups are most rat like in appearances compared to an adult watchman with being born without fur and are pink.
But can we eat them?
we should be able to
@@RoanokeGaming good

Good pack mate ain't he?
Great analysis! Definitely do sound more like canines.
I was hoping you'd touch on their similarity to Lurkers. Are the Lurkers baby Watchmen? Or are the Lurkers the REAL mutated rats?
glad you enjoyed it bro! I will be covering lurkers in a future video so maybe I can make that connection then!
I also had a feeling the watchman were k9s of some kind
*FORM A CIRCLE*
NO A LARGER CIRCLE
Roanoke Gaming NO, AN EVEN LARGER CIRCLE!
Watchmen are 100% not rats because yoh can find an actual mutated rat in black station in Metro 2033
What does it eat? Everything
Omnivores will eat meat and vegetation, though I doubt these creatures are above scavenging too
Roanoke Gaming I can't help but imagine it's like some sharks in that it'll eat stuff that it can't even digest as we have seen when they pull tin cans and liscense plates out of the stomach of sharks
The howling when you are near, ringing the dinner Bell in a sense, leads me to believe that they are coyotes. I live in an area with packs of coyotes and they do the same thing when they find food.
Nice
glad you like it man!
Maybe they are mutated Dog/Rat Hybrid
Nice Meme if they were part rat they would be cannibalistic which makes sense if they can't find food they just eat themselves
you never know!
Right off the bat Papa Roanoke was done with family for the momment
Do a cazador lore video please
Cazador, sounds familiar, cant remember exactly what that is
Big mutant insects from Fallout New Vegas. Based on the tarantula hawk.
Love these vids. Also how cool would it be if in exodus we could tame a certain number of creatures. Like a demon or a pack of watchmen/nosalis.
since its more open environment that would be awesome!
Pls,do a film about what kind of bomb was use to kill people in bulding in 1:14,beacose in the game we know is that was't atomic bomb.
Might be able to do that later!
Thank you.I just was wery interested in this when i was play metro.
absolutely man!
Roanoke Gaming thanks again, you are done a great job!

You should be proud of your videos! They're very interesting but the thing I like most about them is how sincerer you are. You're making videos about things you like because you want to, something that is found less and less these days. Again, you should be proud of all of it!

They seem more dog liked in rat like. Makes you wonder is radiation causing these mutations in these animals or was it more than just nukes that were dropped?
dogs
they are indeed puppers!
there is a watchmen act in the theater, the trainer makes the watchmen to jump from a chair to another, which is curious, because those tricks are only performed by leons and not dogs... not even rats.

Eggcellent! glad you agree my dude!
"Watchmen may be able to be domesticated." Hope that works out better than that one performing Lurker...!
well the lurker worked....kind of haha I believe it would be like now, Hamsters are domesticated but not too many shrews, but dogs were more easily trained, may it would carry over into their mutated form?
Demons are my fav and oh damn when you said fish that's what I thought when I fist saw that face because to me it looked like The Creature from the Blacklogoon.
demons are pretty cool, but watchmen have hands
@@RoanokeGaming So do people but that dose not help much if a Polar Bear is attacking you 😄.
Some people have suggested monkeys but the main issue is the population is HUGE after only 20 years for a handful of monkeys to make, but alot of people keep dogs was my thinking on it
Dude I dont even have this game but ur videos make me so wanna play it.
The claws are a good argument against canine heritage. Those are a massive change from dogs' paws.
thats the main issue I have figuring out exactly what it is, some people have said monkeys, but I wonder how true that is
Lol Roanoke be mad that a Watchmen pack was stealing his bear kill.
Hey congrats on being featured on the Official Metro Facebook Page!

I am loving your channnel! You do lore and explain creatures from my favourite games know one else does! Keep up the amazing work.
Thanks bro! I am glad to hear you are enjoying the videos!
I always got ferret vibes from the watchmen. The elbows and face match up slightly better. There is potential that they are a non solitary members of the mustelid family such as an otter.
I first thought nosalis wear pigs and the dark nosalis wear hogs but after watching ur videos I agree they are probably shrews or moles
Glad I could convert you to my way of thinking! haha

Btw, do you know of a game called warframe? Would be awesome to see videos on the grineer or the infested in that game!
Dogs, I remember one scene in Last Light, where you hear watchmen howl, and its exactly like a dog does.
Maybe a cross between Boxer Dogs and rats. Y'know like with all the radiation, mutagen, experiments, and/or just plain ol' Convergent Evolution.
Looking at their.. Morphology? It makes sense. Not sure if Morphology is the right word.
Well at least you used the 4. Barrel shotgun
#Quadshotbestshot
That Moment when These guys are coming in packs but you Never leave your autoshotty when going on the surface .... yes i do feel sorry for my enemies sometimes xD
I have never thought the Watchmen were rats, it just makes sense that they are dogs.
