    A: Harder, Crawdaddy
    CD: WHAT.
    A: WHAT.
    But just to continue with my additional text info dumps as usual, here is some more:
    1) THEY GOT THE POW... I MEAN LUNGS. Seriously, crawdads are supposedly breathe trough gills, that kinda resemble feathers bent into a half circle. However, that does NOT allow them air breathing, meaning they either evolved lungs (which would be possible as convergent evolution). However, they seem to thrive on land far from water.
    2) THEY GOT THE POWER! I mean, really, that chitinous plating is MASSIVE. And chitin is heavy. That means they have some serious muscle mass underneath that armour, and kinda raises the question, how the heck does it support that massive weight without crushing it's own lower body?
    3) THEY GOT THE CHEATS! Invertebrate circulatory systems should simply fail at current oxygen levels on anything larger than a cat. How they keep their organs supplied with oxygen is simply beyond me. Perhaps the bombs somehow supercharged the air with oxygen, due to A) greatly reduced wildlife to consume it, B) the oceans are largely unaffected, and keep producing oxygen, perhaps even at a larger rate due to mutations [remember, no bombs at the ocean] C) fukking hakz.

      I'm not all that familiar with Metro lore but surely oxygen levels would increase a few decades after nuclear war since they would be no man-made pollution. Taking a few billions cars off the road would knock the oxygen levels up a bit I'd think.

    • @Brutalyte616
      @Brutalyte616 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I think you're confusing 'inverterbrates' with arthropods that breathe through their skin, namely insects.
      Giant insects cannot survive without high concentrations of oxygen because the pores of the skin that they breathe through are extremely inefficient at distributing oxygen throughout the body and compete for space with other parts of the creature's anatomy.
      Invertebrates, on the other hand, can grow to massive size; the Giant Squid and Colossal Squid can reach sizes upwards of 50 feet. Further, it's an established fact that many invertebrates never stop growing throughout their lives and can live for extremely long periods of time, but often die prematurely due to predation, disease, starvation, or exhaustion.

      @@5xg378 True, but even then they are outliers; most invertebrates don't exceed a few inches in length. And in the case of the giant arthropods of the Carboniferous period, who were also invertebrates, their limiting factor was the amount of available oxygen in the atmosphere, not the weight of their bodies.

    I'm pretty sure the actual lore agrees with the sexual dimorphism as is presented here, but I can't help but see how backwards it is. Many crustaceans have opposite sexual dimorphism. Females are large and strong to carry vast numbers of eggs and survive longer to create more offspring, while males are smaller and generally only exist to provide sperm. Crustaceans are also not parental, and simply leave offspring where they lay them and move on, and at most protect the eggs until they hatch. So, it's entirely possible that the weak males live underground whole the strong females live on the surface and venture into the Metro to lay eggs that get externally fertilized by males, and then return to the surface.

    • @Chwarzerd

      That would support the bog shrimp being called mother shrimp

    • @RoanokeGaming
      @RoanokeGaming  6 ปีที่แล้ว +67

      that's a good point! I base my assumption of the males on the surface vs the females underground on that the bog shrimp, while people seem to refer to it as the shrimp mother, the game files call it an alpha male, and because it doesn't look like the shrimp underground and looks like a larger shrimp above ground, I concluded they were male

    • @ahsoka_polo
      @ahsoka_polo 6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Nope the males are bigger than females due to the radiation. Radiation can change any living thing. So the Radiation completely changed the crustaceans genes, behavior etc. Which I why they males are larger. In sum crustaceans species the males are larger or have larger claws than the females.bbut since we're talking about Crawfish, the males are larger

    I think that it is more likely that the 'shrimp' originated from either dragonfly or damselfly nymphs. That is because, as far as I know, dragonflies and damselflies are the only creatures who, in their nymph stage, have labium. Both types of 'shrimp' also have modified forms of labium. The presumed females`labium is very similar to what modern day dragonfly and damselfly nymphs` have and the presumed males seem to have adapted to use their`s for locomotion as well as defense and catching prey. Also, great video by the way! I love watching your videos about theorizing the biology of fiction creatures. Keep up the great work my man!

  • @xxfalconarasxx5659
    @xxfalconarasxx5659 6 ปีที่แล้ว +27

    Well... You don't have to theorize on the sexual dimorphism, since it has been twice confirmed that the armoured ones (most of them at least) are males, and the spitting ones are females. First in the Last Light game files, which refers to the different variants as males and females in the file names, and second in the Metro Exodus website, which clarifies on the sexes of the two main variants. However, what is a bit confusing is the Bog Shrimp, which looks very much like the males, but is referred in game as a "Bog Mother". Of course, while it might seem that the Bog Shrimp being called a "Bog Mother" contradicts the sexual dimorphism this game establishes in relation to this species, it probably is not a mistake in the game. There are species where one sex can take on traits generally attributed to that of the opposite sex. Maybe the sexual dimorphism of the shrimp works similar to that of ants, where all the males (drones) generally have wings, and all the females (workers) are generally wingless, but there is a rare exception among females in which wings do develop, that is the queens. We also see this with cuttlefish, where some males under rare circumstances develop female physical traits to fool other males in an act of sexual mimicry. Sometimes these disguised males have sex with other males. Talk about a trap!

      I would personally recommend the hot peppery and spicy crawfish dishes seen in Chinese Sichuanese cuisine. The meat ain’t much per normal, but the stimulating taste is great for spice lovers. Rotten corpses aside.

    Besides being less threatening, the underground variation probably has less armor to have an easier time scurrying around the small tunnels. The wormlike mouth might be an adaptation to catch/feed off creatures and vegetation where the body will not fit.
    For the males, besides the need for competition and self defense, it might be an ambush predator, they gonna need that protein and nutrient influx with low risk to grow that big and make that much armor

      Things like what you see in games like this are indeed not possible. Any mutations would be genetic degradation and not visible.
      Most mutations would lead to the death of animals involved due to sterility or genetic destruction. You can use real-world Chernobyl as an excellent example.
      The original Fallout games (1 & 2 specifically) actually explain the mutations being the result of mutated, airborne FEV that leaked from test sites and not radiation.

    .
    Because if you look into their mouth it appears that they still have said warm like mouth but it simply sunk back into the head.
    .
    With the front job more than likely being used to crush it spray to make it easier for the smaller Jaws to prepared for consumption.

Also they are good eating! mostly with Beer~
    Are you going to do the other Nosalis? i always got the Theory that the Winged and Rhino Nosalis are just called that by us Humans, because each has a "nose trait", i doubt they all are of the Same species, even if the Rhino and Winged are considered "females" of the Nosalis species, i just think evolution made all of 'em work together somehow, maybe they are from the same Family, but not same Species~

    I may have to disagree on the potential source of the shrimps in the metro. While I will not say that it is definitely not a crayfish or similar (pretty sure that crayfish in Russia are actually quite popular so its a valid contender) i always found moresimilarity to fairy or tadpole shrimp. Would have to play back through to reallyget that feel again for why i got that, but atthe very least their capacity to lay numerous eggs that can weather insane conditions and drought for many years is something to consider. I would have to look into this further and admit fully to my own bias as i am fascinated with these creatures, but putting it out there for your consideration.
    Also, you might be surprised at just how many fresh water shrimps there actually are, as well assome that live part of their life in fresh and another lart in salt. Great video none the less. :)

    I remember when I fought the Mother Shrimp. My gas mask no longer had any filters, so I kept dying over and over again from the air. And after the seventh restart, I had the miraculous idea of constantly taking the filter off and putting it back on. I'd wait until I was close to asphyxiation and then I'd put it back on. Over and over again. It gave me that extra minute to survive, and my teammates killed it.

The autosave really screwed me here because I went around collecting shit before powering the dingy that took you across which takes FOREVER, then I looked around the buildings on the other side for secrets. I knew I was running low on filters at that point but I figured I could just restart and run to each thing I had found, then I jump down with like 9 seconds to spare and a freaking boss fight ensues and quicksaves...thanks Metro! After getting stuck in an endless deathloop I wasn't as smart as you, I downloaded a cheat engine to just get me past that part because god knows I was not replaying that far into the game.

    With the release of *Metro Exodus* and its updated models for its various mutants, we can now pretty much confirm that, yes, Shrimps are indeed mutated crawfish.
    Out past Moscow in the waters, Shrimp can be seen milling about. The females and males are seen to resemble their unmutated ancestry much more prominently than before, basically just being gigantic crayfish.
