Sofia Coppola is one of the greatest female directors of our generation. Her emphasis on characters who deal with isolation and minimalist style of filmmaking make her films stand out in a subtle way.
Coppola's new film Priscilla is getting quite a lot of notoriety. I think that's why they're doing a piece of her right now. if you look at releases and the directors they choose it's usually close to someone's release. So it's more the female directors not putting as much out. But this is a good video.
But I am surprised. I could not find one on Greta Gerwig so you might have a point. I will drop this link for you. I love this interview with greta. I hope you enjoy it. But I mean, you watch Studio Binder so chances are you have seen it.

I find they focus on directors that have a body of work, that in your mind you could easily reference without having to have seen a film in a while. Did that list have some one like that?
To me its not just isolation she conveys so well, its also the distance between the viewer and the subject. She makes those characters seem mysterious and they draw you in but you become hyper aware that as a viewer you will never penetrate that isolation and never really understand the character. This is especially pronounced when the character is female as its almost like seeing the woman through the female gaze (instead of the male gaze many directors use) but not quite understanding what you are seeing. The depths of those characters are not for the viewer and are somehow meant only for the character. Its a quiet deep isolation of being unknown, not of being unseen or alone which leaves the viewer feeling their own isolation and desiring to reach through the screen to tear that wall separating the viewer from the character.
I love Sofia Coppola movies, she rarely missed. Haven't found a single movie that i dislike, even some of her lesser ones atleast have some enjoyment in it that i can just have a good time watching it. I need Coppola and Kirsten Dunst to reunite for a movie together, one of the best Hollywood duos

This is timely, I am currently working on a short film (using SB) where the main theme is isolation amd solitude, an 'abandoned on an island' exercise where I am trying to drive home the feeling of complete isolation and the desperation that comes with. Nice timing SB.
My comment is escecially about 'Lost" since I've yet to see many others. That movie really struck me with a contact high. The Ginza and it's soundtrack created a wonderful reflective moment I've never felt in a movie and made me an instant fan.
Can you do Kathryn Bigelow next? She's one of the best female directors of all time and was the first female director to win Best Director at the Oscars. Her filmography is incredible, Zero Dark Thirty is my favourite of hers. I remember being blown away that a movie about the hunting of Osama Bin Laden is directed by a female which is rare for a female director to make a terrorist crime movie like Bigelow with Zero Dark Thirty. Please do Bigelow next if you want to make more of female directors 🙏
Leaving the showing of "Lost" I was strongly affected by the movie but didn't really know why. Now after watching all the critical raves about it I realize that it's an assembly of deeply considered life issues delivered in a fetching gift wrap. An amazing accomplishment.

Excellent as usual. This might be a bit specific, but in the Fabelmans, towards the end of the film, Spielberg has two kitchen scenes back to back; one with Sammy and his mother and one with Sammy and his father. That can't have been a coincidence. They are both great scenes. The blocking and staging are very different in both however and I'd love to see a comparison, showing how a master uses blocking and staging.
Buster Keaton had an incredible style. He used cinema itself and the possibilities of this new art form to tell his stories. So he astonished millions, often without having a script for his movies.
Sofia Coppola is one of my absolute favorite female directors of all time, along with Greta Gerwig, Julia Ducournau, Kathryn Bigelow and Jane Campion. "Somewhere", "Lost in Translation" and "On the Rocks" are my top 3 favorite Sofia Coppola movies.✨
