Just in case there's anyone who's hovering around 30 feeling like they're never going to 'make it' (or any age for that matter). I thought I was 'past it' at 31, I thought I'd never meet someone, never 'make it' with my art etc. Anyway I'm 48 now and things are good, I didn't start making a living from my art until I was 40 - I know other artists who started way later than me. It's never too late to have a go at the thing you always wanted to.
Also, yes, being in an older body is weird to get used to as you still feel like you should still be able to do the things you did at 20, but with the ageing comes more wisdom, less giving a crap what people think. I saw an interview with Jodie Foster recently who said 'Don't compete with your younger self' - and that's an AMAZING piece of advice. You'll totally lose yourself doing that. It's a huge cliche, but yes, growing old is a privilege.

In matriarchal societies older women were prized for their wisdom and experience - we should uncondition our minds to think a woman's worth diminuishes with age and embrace every single phase of our lives, including the later ones. They all bring challenges but they're all forms of initiation. And they all have perks, too.

I've never found aging to be scary in this way. Year after year I become wiser and more knowledgeable. I take pride in combatting closemindedness and have truly embraced the "wise old woman" archetype. Youths regular seek advice from me and consistently find themselves surprised by how useful the advice is, and eagerly come back for more advice.
That is a downright joyous feeling and completely dwarfs any wrinkles.

I never had a perfect young body to mourn so there’s been no specific change I fixate on or am desperate to undo. I’m basically okay with looking like a woman my factual age. What I worry about is being dehumanized. I’m afraid of people looking at me and reacting like I’m a caricature from, like, Harry Potter - one of those characters who are treated as immediate objects of contempt and ridicule. There must be something dim or mean about them just because we think they look kind of dumpy. We talk about aging like it’s something you can do well or fail at, and you deserve credit or criticism depending on how it goes. I can adjust to looking different, but I do feel scared of gradually being seen as a failed woman rather than just an older one.

I'm glad that there is a conversation about women aging naturally, its so unhealthy to be obsessed with trying to look youthful. Hollywood especially is cruel towards older women. Gloria Swanson was absolutely stunning up until her 70s, but the whole premise of Sunset Blvd was how ridiculous, old, and delusional she was,(when she was likely only 50) So many women are caught up in the anti aging game, as in botox, surgeries, etc, and a whole new generation of young women are buying into this crap. As long as your body is healthy, and can still do most things physically, then thats a good thing to strive for, not looking younger.

Aging is considering terrifying because youth is a prized commodity for men and their gaze. To no longer be youthful, is essentially the end of a woman's usefulness and or value according to men. When they stop making movies that present the biggest fear for women being her age and her decreased level of attractiveness, then these sort of films will cease to exist.
I for one, welcome my age, it means I have seen the horrors of humanity and survived. But, it also means I must continue to watch it's stupidity. Double edge sword that.

Facing your mortality is different than dealing with the physical changes. A lot of the physical crap is secondary to the ridiculous ageist ideology that's everywhere making it seem like you're a wrinkled up prune at 30 or 40 which is absolute BS. I'm 42 and perfectly happy with my physical appearance. My mom passed in her mid 50s from cancer and still had her pick of the litter because she was timelessly and naturally gorgeous. Just to point out, unfortunately, WOMEN are by far the harshest critics of other women. I look at myself as being in my prime, baby! The painful part is seeing people you've known and loved your whole life pass away. Seeing my dad grow into a senior citizen means he's closer to the end and that doesn't even bear thinking about - I'm just not ready to face that yet. It's a dual edged sword with tons of pros but definitely some cons too.

Even "Mom" explores some troubles that society makes us with aging, like diseases, finfding love or being invisible to people, and does it with healthy dose of humor. The problem with framing this as a psychological issue is that the solution seems like a purely individual one. This "self-help" mentality says its just a matter of changing the way one thinks. But that is really ignoring the huge weight of social pressure. How can one think positively about aging when your whole society is telling you it is a negative thing? Instead, we need to think of this issue more sociologically. The problem (and the solution) do not lie solely in individual psychology, but in society. We need social change at the structural level of society, such as through new social policies and cultural norms.

Social media and show-business has people living in a split reality - in real life, things get better when you pass 30. The ways women are treated because of the desirability of youth are just consolation prizes for being objectified. Once you let go of how you are physically perceived the appeal of chasing a youthful appearance disappears; most people have, they’re just not in the public eye.

The pros of aging is in the mind, it's being more mature and being comfortable as yourself. However, who doesn't want their 25 year old body back?

I think we fear aging because of how our society treats the elderly.

When I was a kid I had female relatives who were stunning and whose whole identity was their looks. Then they aged and gained weight. Guess what? They became awful because they expected the same attention and privilege as before but didn’t get it. And they didn’t have much else going on.
I decided to focus on my skills and becoming a better person. Do I feel good about now sagging flesh? Not really. But I also have an identity outside of my looks. And it’s kind of nice being invisible to most men. They made my life hellish when I was young and hot.
There’s so much more to life.

Margaret Qualley, who plays Sue in The Substance, is turning 30 this year. The exact age society has conditioned women to believe they are becoming old hags. That's pretty hilarious

I'll be completely honest here. I don't see the ones who die young as the unfortunate ones, on the contrary, they were able to leave the party before it got lame. I really don't wanna live past my 50s, I actually find my 40s miserable enough, i'm not looking forward the "next level"... at all.

We are aging better though. Especially in the 1970s. I am a year older than Redd Foxx when he canceled Sanford and Son. What woman now would dress ans let their hair grow grey naturally like the late Bea Arthur in Maude. Janet Jackson is now the same age as Esther Rolle when they first worked together on Good Times. 😮😅
