There is something about Tim Burton film's aesthetic that speak to my soul since I was a very little kid. My mom told me that when I was less than a year and still in the playpen, I love watching Edward's scissorhands that ran on a cable TV very often during that time (I was born 94). And when I became 3-4 years old this time I remember that I love watching nightmare before Christmas, it is the first film that I watch an entire film from the beginning until its very end. when I was a kid I didn't care or know who direct these films or pretend to like it because someone said it's cool. I really like them because I like them. Thorough out years my favorite movies are corps bride, alice in wonderland, dark shadow, big fish etc. mainly because the vibe these movies are giving.
Back in the 90s he was considered too weird. Nowadays he might have a better chance, but sadly basically everyone agrees (at least i have never heard of anyone saying differently) that his movies nowadays a far from his prime. In my opinion, he and Caroline Thompson should have won Best Original Screenplay for Edward Scissorhands

Danny Elfman really deserved more than an offhand mention when talking about casting. He's as important to the success of Tim Burton's movies, as John Williams is important to Steven Spielberg. Especially in the more emotional moments.
No, he's not, watch a Tim Burton film with the sound down, it makes no difference, the same emotion and feelings are there, anyone could have done it, Howard shore would have done the same job, but I am glad its Elfman he is a genius, Elfman's other films he scored are not as memorable like the frighteners, no-one cares, he gets commercial props for the Simpsons but that's it, John Williams, eats him alive but it is Tim burtons imagery 100% please don't get it twisted

He's not fond of musicals, you know. He did Sweeney Todd because Helena wanted to star in a musical film and be Mrs Lovett. Look at most of his films. "Musical" does not represent your average TB film.

He cares deeply about using music as a narrative tool - whether it is in actual musicals like The Chocolate Factory and Sweeney Todd or just helping establish the tone as in Edward and Pee Wee. I don't think he is opposed to directing another musical or adapting Addams Family with less diegetic music.
@@mariaah3073 I never denied Danny Elfman's heavy involvement in writing the scores from most movies, save Sondheim's Sweeney Todd. But beyond instrumentation, he rarely directs actual musical films with lyrical songs in them, as he doesn't like them very much, as he clearly said in the interviews for ST, so says Helena to whom the film was a favor for. I think it would take her or Johnny to get him to do another one. Unless they are involved, he would likely turn it down or try to avoid making it another musical.

I completely understand the cemetary thing. Even as a child cemeteries were only scary in movies. In real life, to me, they have always been peacful and even comforting.
Mark Anthony Sangalang huh, there was also a graveyard near my old school. We once went to do a math practice by taking the dates people had died, each duo counting a road. It was pretty but also sad, there was a grave that only had one date because the baby died shortly after being born.
I didn't know that Tim Burton normally had a lo budget until this video. Some of his older stuff like Bettlejuice isn't the best special effects but it stills holds up surprisingly well in some moments. He is one of the few people who make movies just because he loves the ideas and has so much passion behind it and I think that is why his movies are great and why people love them it's not just for money

big fish is so good. i don't actually know if its underrated or not but none of my friends or family have seen it, except my mom, who showed it to me in the first place.
The ones more aimed at children aren’t that bad or scary aside from Charlie and the chocolate and wonderland in my opinion which are somewhat disturbing and I’d say the same for the home for percular children to some degree. The adult movies are somewhat scary I guess like Sweeny Todd and sleepy hallow to some degree scary but not that much. I’d say that batman 89 is scary more for younger children because Nicholson’s joker is creepy for everyone.
If you want the difference between Tim Burton and Henry Selick, Selick's horror isn't combined with childlike wonder. Selick makes films that are often harrowing but majestic.

I think you should have explored more the fact that he tends to work with the same people. It seems to me that he is always working with his friends. Couple that with the low budget and the child-like aspects you mentioned earlier, and it almost seems like a kid doing movies in his house with all his friends

Fun fact when I first watched Charlie and the Chocolate factory when I was 4 my assumption at hearing the disturbing line, "Even I'm edible." was not that it was cannibalism. I'm not sure I even knew what cannbalism was then. No my first thought was "Willy Wonka is made of candy." like after living in a candy factory for so many years he somehow became candy, and that if I ate him I would taste choclate or butterscotch not human flesh. It sounds disgusting and gross hearing that now that I'm an adult, but honestly it wouldn't be impossible in a Burton film, and that's what I love about Burton he captures a child's love for the strange, unusal, and sometimes even profane. 2 things I also beileved as a child; that if I flushed the toilet a sewer monster would come out and eat me, and that if you drank lemonade without sugar your face would turn into sour frown permantely.
I always watch Corpse Bride every Halloween! Awesome analysis of the one and only Tim Burton!! I’ve always related to his movies or characters, and maybe it’s because it’s completely different than anything anyone has done.
Talking about the outcast protagonists in his movies, I think, The Penguin from Batman Returns should be mentionend, as well. Even though Batman is the titular main character of that movie, it's actually The Penguin looking for answers about himself, but also for acceptance of society.

I actually grew up on Tim Burton’s movies and art. His style has frightened me for sure but it’s always been there in the background as something my entire family will sit down together to watch.

I just love tim burton and his work. when I was younger I almost watched coraline,nightmare before Christmas and corpse bride every day. He inspired me to create my own stuff it doesn’t matter how weird or obscure it is
I love this video and all of your observations! You've clearly put a lot of time, talent, and care into this and into your grasp of film that has representations of elements from literature, too. Just one thing, there is no stepmother in 'Alice in Wonderland', that is her mother. She's the stern mother to the indulging whimsical father archetype (serious vs silly) which isn't as much a fairytale trope as it is a hallmark of many writers, particularly those from the UK.
This is probably the best series on TH-cam regarding the diverse style and techniques of filmmaking. Great for the casual fan. Now can we please get one on Scorsese, he's probably the only big name director left untouched
Shaun M a lot of people mistakenly believed that Addams Family -(the Christina Ricci as Wednesday Addams version) and Addams Family Values were done by Tim Burton or that he at least had a hand in it. (Ironically furthered by the fact that she was later in Sleepy Hollow YEARS later)
Lark_ Lore I'm sad to say I haven't had a chance to see the new version of it yet, especially as a huge "Chaz" Addams fan, (and of Chloë Grace Moretz - The "moody" teenage daughter from Tim Burton's Dark Shadows, and voice of Wednesday in the latest incarnation) Your idea is great but it took them between approximately three years to make Nightmare (once it was finally approved) - and they started work on Corpse Bride in 2003 and it didn't release until fall of 2005 (and that is after Burton and his team won the argument/convinced the studio to let them use digital cameras to take the pictures instead of traditional film snapshots) which is why it was done so much faster. As for my not seeing Addams Family... It's is ultra ironic because I ended up finding out about the film being in production before any official press-releases. I blew up newsfeeds with *every* update IMDB had about casting and the *very first* - potentially leaked trailer - almost a year in advance. Then because of a series of crappy events, my advance tickets were stolen. ***Please don't ruin it for me!*** I swear I will be more hardcore than game of thrones fans about spoiling the final season!
Orionsend I haven't seen it either, haven't been all looped up into what I can only name as the decade of remake nonsense. I do know all the hard work it takes to make stop motion films and how long, like Coraline or Kubo. I just love watching the finished product it gives such a great personality to them.
Lark_ Lore if you enjoy stop motion get your hands on a physical copy of ParaNorman. If you aren't familiar with the story/plot - you will genuinely enjoy it. Even if you are you can try your local library or Redbox to get ahold of a DVD (luckily my library has a copy) - because the stop-motion is *flawless*... It's almost too perfect! The first time I saw the film I honestly thought it was CGI. But the DVD extras are amazing because the people who put it together were *so* meticulous it ~flows~. There are I believe over 10x the amount of frames per second than Nightmare Before Christmas / Corpse Bride! If you see it, watch the artistry behind the making of ParaNorman and like it - please buy it! this company should really stay in business for a long long time! Especially since everybody is doing CGI because it's cheaper/faster than anything else. I enjoy *good* stop motion, but I also miss good old-fashioned artistic hand-drawn animation. Watching the holiday classics that started in the 60's-80's... Made me realize that we aren't going to make anything like that again. Works that transcend age, generations, technological advances, and cultural "development"/change. What was accomplished with the animated How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Charlie Brown, Rudolph (and the various other stop motions made in that time), Nightmare Before, ect... Because CGI is always going to become more advanced and therefore anything made a decade previous is always going to look shabbier and shabbier. This is alsotrue of most live action films (classic Muppets excluded) with any "effects", because it's the same. ---- I think this is why Hollywood is so obsessed with doing remakes - it started with George Lucas "improving" the original Star Wars trilogy by destroying all known original copies (literally - he was buying them for incredibly high amounts on eBay ect to try to "erase" their existence) then releasing them with the newer technologies. So they take a look at films like Pet Sematary and think, "well that was good but there was a lot they didn't show because they couldn't pull it off then..." So they do it again... (PS I have not even bothered to watch the new one. I don't bother watching remakes/reboots unless it's to heckle or if, say it was an adaptation of a novel and the writer was not happy with the first and this time they are including them in the script process.)
I love Tim Burton because he reminds me of me. I am always treated like a freak because I love the theorys and ideas of death. I know it sounds morbid but it is fascinating to learn about the ways cultures deal with death because it says a lot about the cultures in general. Not only that but I love the same kind of art style as Tim Burton. Note: Yes I know I kind of went on a mini rant.
reecord2 well technically Roald Dahl's family agrees with you up to a certain point - I can't remember where I read this, I believe in one of the anniversary editions of the book, but they mention Burton visiting Roald Dahl's family (since they were very hesitant to allow anyone else to touch the material due to the extreme disagreements he had over the original), yet as soon as Burton walked into Roald Dahl's writing shed he proclaimed "my God it's the bucket house!" to which Dahl's family immediately thought, "he gets it he really gets it!" which is why they let him touch the material in the first place. I *do not* know how happy they would have been about the dentist father storyline he added since one of the main things that upset Roald Dahl about the original was them changing things(and the way) Willy Wonka said and acted which is why he essentially included in his will that no one was ever allowed to make a film adaptation of the sequel Great Glass Elevator.

Nightmare before Xmas and Corpse Bride were some of my favorites and still are. Theyre much more memorable because they're different compared to many other things kids watch.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Alice in Wonderland, Alice through the Looking Glass, Sleepy Hollow, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children Planet of the Apes, James and the Giant Peach are my favourite films by Tim Burton, at least the ones ive watched. James and the Giant Peach was my first Tim Burton film, i felt scared, weirded out, but i absolutely loved it and the feeling of watching it. It really does feel like dream. I always feel so immersed when watching his films, love the characters so much. I am so grateful to be alive during the release of his works, being able to watch and enjoy his films are one of my greatest savouries *Edit* i just realised James and the giant peach is by Henry Selick, who made Coraline as well... I really have a taste for this kinda movies huh. I love Coraline to the level where i learnt its ending song, which lyrics are literal gibberish, not even joking.

No matter how popular he gets I feel like Tim Burton is always a little underrated. Although recently his movies haven’t been as good, but that might be due to the massive budgets and companies and material he’s working with. When he does his own stuff it’s always fantastic.

Too scary for children? I’ve grown up watching just about every atom Burton movie. All I can say is that they are absolutely brilliant.
The ones more aimed at children aren’t that bad or scary aside from Charlie and the chocolate and wonderland in my opinion which are somewhat disturbing and I’d say the same for the home for percular children to some degree. The adult movies are somewhat scary I guess like Sweeny Todd and sleepy hallow to some degree scary but not that much. I’d say that batman 89 is scary more for younger children because Nicholson’s joker is creepy for everyone.
If you want the difference between Tim Burton and Henry Selick, Selick's horror isn't combined with childlike wonder. Selick makes films that are often harrowing but majestic.

I think you should have explored more the fact that he tends to work with the same people. It seems to me that he is always working with his friends. Couple that with the low budget and the child-like aspects you mentioned earlier, and it almost seems like a kid doing movies in his house with all his friends

Fun fact when I first watched Charlie and the Chocolate factory when I was 4 my assumption at hearing the disturbing line, "Even I'm edible." was not that it was cannibalism. I'm not sure I even knew what cannbalism was then. No my first thought was "Willy Wonka is made of candy." like after living in a candy factory for so many years he somehow became candy, and that if I ate him I would taste choclate or butterscotch not human flesh. It sounds disgusting and gross hearing that now that I'm an adult, but honestly it wouldn't be impossible in a Burton film, and that's what I love about Burton he captures a child's love for the strange, unusal, and sometimes even profane.
2 things I also beileved as a child; that if I flushed the toilet a sewer monster would come out and eat me, and that if you drank lemonade without sugar your face would turn into sour frown permantely.

I always watch Corpse Bride every Halloween! Awesome analysis of the one and only Tim Burton!! I’ve always related to his movies or characters, and maybe it’s because it’s completely different than anything anyone has done.
I took a quiz and the character I got was Lydia Deetz from BEETLEJUICE, BEETLEJUICE, BEETLEJUICE.

Talking about the outcast protagonists in his movies, I think, The Penguin from Batman Returns should be mentionend, as well.
Even though Batman is the titular main character of that movie, it's actually The Penguin looking for answers about himself, but also for acceptance of society.

Coraline is not a Tim Burton movie tho, it's Henry Selick who made that movie, he was also the director of nightmare before christmas.
I love this video and all of your observations! You've clearly put a lot of time, talent, and care into this and into your grasp of film that has representations of elements from literature, too. Just one thing, there is no stepmother in 'Alice in Wonderland', that is her mother. She's the stern mother to the indulging whimsical father archetype (serious vs silly) which isn't as much a fairytale trope as it is a hallmark of many writers, particularly those from the UK.

Shaun M a lot of people mistakenly believed that Addams Family -(the Christina Ricci as Wednesday Addams version) and Addams Family Values were done by Tim Burton or that he at least had a hand in it.
(Ironically furthered by the fact that she was later in Sleepy Hollow YEARS later)

Lark_ Lore I'm sad to say I haven't had a chance to see the new version of it yet, especially as a huge "Chaz" Addams fan, (and of Chloë Grace Moretz - The "moody" teenage daughter from Tim Burton's Dark Shadows, and voice of Wednesday in the latest incarnation)
Your idea is great but it took them between approximately three years to make Nightmare (once it was finally approved) - and they started work on Corpse Bride in 2003 and it didn't release until fall of 2005 (and that is after Burton and his team won the argument/convinced the studio to let them use digital cameras to take the pictures instead of traditional film snapshots) which is why it was done so much faster.
As for my not seeing Addams Family...
It's is ultra ironic because I ended up finding out about the film being in production before any official press-releases.
I blew up newsfeeds with *every* update IMDB had about casting and the *very first* - potentially leaked trailer - almost a year in advance.
Then because of a series of crappy events, my advance tickets were stolen.
***Please don't ruin it for me!*** I swear I will be more hardcore than game of thrones fans about spoiling the final season!
Orionsend I haven't seen it either, haven't been all looped up into what I can only name as the decade of remake nonsense. I do know all the hard work it takes to make stop motion films and how long, like Coraline or Kubo. I just love watching the finished product it gives such a great personality to them.
Lark_ Lore if you enjoy stop motion get your hands on a physical copy of ParaNorman.
If you aren't familiar with the story/plot - you will genuinely enjoy it.
Even if you are you can try your local library or Redbox to get ahold of a DVD (luckily my library has a copy) - because the stop-motion is *flawless*... It's almost too perfect!
The first time I saw the film I honestly thought it was CGI. But the DVD extras are amazing because the people who put it together were *so* meticulous it ~flows~.
There are I believe over 10x the amount of frames per second than Nightmare Before Christmas / Corpse Bride!
If you see it, watch the artistry behind the making of ParaNorman and like it - please buy it! this company should really stay in business for a long long time!

I enjoy *good* stop motion, but I also miss good old-fashioned artistic hand-drawn animation.
Watching the holiday classics that started in the 60's-80's...
Made me realize that we aren't going to make anything like that again. Works that transcend age, generations, technological advances, and cultural "development"/change.
What was accomplished with the animated How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Charlie Brown, Rudolph (and the various other stop motions made in that time), Nightmare Before, ect...
Because CGI is always going to become more advanced and therefore anything made a decade previous is always going to look shabbier and shabbier.
This is alsotrue of most live action films (classic Muppets excluded) with any "effects", because it's the same.

I think this is why Hollywood is so obsessed with doing remakes - it started with George Lucas "improving" the original Star Wars trilogy by destroying all known original copies (literally - he was buying them for incredibly high amounts on eBay ect to try to "erase" their existence) then releasing them with the newer technologies.
So they take a look at films like Pet Sematary and think, "well that was good but there was a lot they didn't show because they couldn't pull it off then..."
So they do it again...
(PS I have not even bothered to watch the new one. I don't bother watching remakes/reboots unless it's to heckle or if, say it was an adaptation of a novel and the writer was not happy with the first and this time they are including them in the script process.)

I love Tim Burton because he reminds me of me. I am always treated like a freak because I love the theorys and ideas of death. I know it sounds morbid but it is fascinating to learn about the ways cultures deal with death because it says a lot about the cultures in general. Not only that but I love the same kind of art style as Tim Burton.

reecord2 well technically Roald Dahl's family agrees with you up to a certain point - I can't remember where I read this, I believe in one of the anniversary editions of the book, but they mention Burton visiting Roald Dahl's family (since they were very hesitant to allow anyone else to touch the material due to the extreme disagreements he had over the original), yet as soon as Burton walked into Roald Dahl's writing shed he proclaimed "my God it's the bucket house!" to which Dahl's family immediately thought, "he gets it he really gets it!" which is why they let him touch the material in the first place.
I *do not* know how happy they would have been about the dentist father storyline he added since one of the main things that upset Roald Dahl about the original was them changing things(and the way) Willy Wonka said and acted which is why he essentially included in his will that no one was ever allowed to make a film adaptation of the sequel Great Glass Elevator.

Its darker or has a dream like state along with music that sounds like a music box.
Nightmare before Xmas and Corpse Bride were some of my favorites and still are. Theyre much more memorable because they're different compared to many other things kids watch.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Alice in Wonderland, Alice through the Looking Glass, Sleepy Hollow, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children Planet of the Apes, James and the Giant Peach are my favourite films by Tim Burton, at least the ones ive watched.
James and the Giant Peach was my first Tim Burton film, i felt scared, weirded out, but i absolutely loved it and the feeling of watching it. It really does feel like dream. I always feel so immersed when watching his films, love the characters so much. I am so grateful to be alive during the release of his works, being able to watch and enjoy his films are one of my greatest savouries

No matter how popular he gets I feel like Tim Burton is always a little underrated. Although recently his movies haven’t been as good, but that might be due to the massive budgets and companies and material he’s working with. When he does his own stuff it’s always fantastic.
