This video changed my life. Watching this in the early 90's compelled me to give up everything, drive cross country and ski Squaw Valley. Went there for several years. Changed my life for the better and turned me into a man.
As many have said this film was a life changer. I had it on VHS and played it endlessly. Skiing was and is still a big part of my life. Scot Schmitz was a big influence on my skiing. I did everything in my power to become as smooth as Scot. Of course he skies at a completely different level. I am now 65 and have skied at many of the areas in this video and will be headed out to Big Sky this winter. My friends and I are all still skiing and hiking to the steeps. Skiing has made my life so much more complete. Thanks
This was groundbreaking. The production coupled with music from Propaganda was a match made in heaven. I remember as an English teenager skiing in the French Alps with Propaganda in my head and the images of Glen Plake skiing moguls. I was never that good but thanks to Plake I did learn to monoski which was really cool. Thank you guys!!
I'm American and when I was little kid in 1989 90, there would be videos of plake with his Mohawk playing on all the TVs at the ski lodges on the mountains here. I would just look in awe at the size of the jumps these guys were doing
@jamestyler3449 incredible!!! I thought I was the only dipwad still doing that. Propaganda. ACT, Seal, cpla more. Still have my mp3 player with Different sets: crusin' tunes, pure bumps etc.
Most of the tracks are not Propaganda, but singer Claudia Brücken singing with a band called ACT. You can find the tracks on the album Laughter Tears and Rage.
This was the beginning of the end of an era of skiing; before short, narrow waisted carving skis were in vogue. I was teaching at Vail at the time the Bilzzard of Ahhhs!! came out, and it was exactly what we all wanted to emulate. Those were the dazzzze.
So true ... Skiing in the Banff Area into the Kootenays cruzing on 207s doing bumps and always having a pair of 218 cm super g boards from the Canadian national Team for going big..Funny when these Stump Movies came out The Word Was Extreme.... We all joked..... we had been doing it for years...didn't seem extreme .. just skiing little speed skiing , downhills , .. remember gelande .. been in 4 Avalanches .....Now I only ski 20cm plus Powder Days ...What a life .. nobody can take millions of vertical ft of ski lines away from the memory .. We lived/ live in the real .. best to all.
Was going to comment the same...His views sure didnt age well. Back in 2015 my wife and I did a once in a lifetime 3 month trip out West in a Jeep professionally built for extended camping (we picked it up cheap). One part we came over Black Bear Pass into Telluride. Was looking forward to it as I thought it would be this rustic old mining town. Instead, saw a bunch of financial businesses, high end realtors, a bunch of fancy shops catering to the rich, exoensive restaurants and friggin poetry reading. Stayed overnight at a camping spot and headed over Imogen into Ouray the next day. At the time...much nicer although with rhe explosion in people going off road now, no idea what the place or the trails are like. Sold the Jeep once we got back
@@michaelh6743. You’ve GOT to know that you sound just like one of the rich clientele those “expensive restaurants and friggin poetry readings” cater to when your start your comment by mentioning your “Jeep professionally built for extended camping “! Do you think any of those old, “authentic” Telluride ski bums would have EVER road-tripped in a professionally built anything?! Just a thought to chew on!
@johns3106 Haha..i was trying to avoid saying the cringeworthy word "overlanding". At the time, I was living overseas with my gf, now wife. Applied for a 30 day Visa and instead the embassy gave her a 10 year multi entry Visa so that got my mind going. Was on a site called Bringatrailer (early days before it started catering to the rich crowd) and someone mentioned Expedition Portal and you could pick up capable camping rigs for cheap. Looked that night and found the Jeep that had been listed for sale for a long time so got a wild hair and bought it site unseen. Wired money to my Dad. Planned a 3 month trip out West doing everthing I always wanted to do as a kid. Never had a 4 wheel drive and we dont have mountains in Florida where I grew up so learned on the fly. We put about 10000 2 lane and trail miles on the rig driving around New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, and California. Spent 80 percent of the nights in the Jeep sleeping in weather down to almost 20. Never had a disagreement with my gf so we both passed that test I guess. Sold it when I got back. Whole trip cost me about 7k. Once in a lifetime trip. West is so beautiful.
I watch this with a racing 🏁 heart ♥, my youth, the DREAMS, anticipation, potential, what was yet is no more ................. I'm a better skier than Plake ever was yet he dominates my soul. He is my hero and a living legend. LONG LIVE THE PLAKE LONG LIVE THE KING 👑
Born in Anchorage, AK 1978. Me and my friends didn’t just worship this film (watched over 100 times) we emulated this style of radical skiing in arguably the most extreme place on earth. In the 80s it was all neon ski coats, flashy bindings, long boards, long poles, hats with style and my god the memories of a sunny day after 36 inches of powder! I met my maker in those moments at Alyeska resort in Girdwood, AK. Out of bounds was the norm and the freedom of expression was yours for the taking. This movie literally changed my life! Much love my friends.
that local rope tow was called Kiwanis ski slope in Gorhan Maine behind the primary school 2 miles from my parents farmhouse where we strapped on our bear tooth bindings and skied nights for 50 cents. Gregs father worked in the theater dept. at the local univ. campus. We eventually moved on to an A frame at Sugarloaf. That was 50+ years ago.
It's amazing how many people can say this film changed their lives. The moment most engrained in my brain is the Plake intro at 25:54. I just sat in awe in my friend's basement as a kid and knew immediately what I wanted to do in life. :)
Obsession is what this is all about, in a good way. Like these guys i find that obsession in skiing. Since i was in my early teens it was all i could think about for many of those formative years. When i went to Uni i couldn't afford it for a long time, but got back into it again at late 20s and early 30s and have not stopped for a couple of decades now, every chance i get. Love it so much as an adrenaline source and an exercise. I do wish they had park skiing when i was a kid though 🙂 I built my own jumps back then trying to emulate the video clips, and got chased about the mountain by the ski patrol and has my season pass confiscated twice for enjoying myself 🙂
This movie changed everything and was the catalyst and original spark of everything X to come. This movie showcased snowboarding, and inline skating to millions for the first time. The X Games and freestyle skiing and the intro of Snowboarding into the Olympics all can give homage to what was created here and what it meant to the skiing/snowboarding extreme sports world back in the 80's and still to this day.
agree! My copy of blizzard was played so many times the sound track was off Plake's voice would come out of hattrup. Yes, I was one of those runny nose kids at the ski shop.
@@DCU88 I thought Mohawk guy was a God when I caught glimpses of him on the TV screens in the ski lodges here in California. It was mind-blowing This one dude told his daughter not to look!!! Lol. Bad example I guess
Came here because I remembered Ken Block said something about this ski movie. I see why. Before my time but amazing and full of 80's goodness. They were ripping.

I remember seeing Glen Plake skiing at Squaw and Alpine back in these days. Just mind blowing. And the best thing is he’s still out crushing it today.
Easily the most legendary resonant comments I’ve read on TH-cam, we shared the same ski era. Be well my brothers, much love

Same here. I'm still in the Eastern Sierra 30 years later. Got two acres with a creek and still ski 100 days a year all thanks to this damn film.
Same thing here! Still never had a real job. Good job brother!
Yes yes same here
We went from the small hills of Ontario and western New York to all over Alberta and B.C because of this movie. Cheers

What a movie! I must have rented it ten times from our local skate shop. Amazing how modern skis make this terrain so much easier to ski.

Absolutely love this film. I had it on video back in the day. Met Glen Plake at the Daily Express Ski Show in the 80s too - good times 💯🥳
Gave my daughter a Plake bobblehead, signed by him. Still one of her cherished possessions.
Growing up and seeing Squaw then. Day in. day out. To me, it will Always be Squaw.
Chute 75.
Beautiful film, thank you for uploading. Had this on VHS as a kid. This and Warren Miller’s 50 were childhood staples

Tough call. But as an old bump dog, my heart belongs with Fistful of Moguls. However, Blizzard is THE classic of all time.
