    I remember seeing Glen Plake skiing at Squaw and Alpine back in these days. Just mind blowing. And the best thing is he’s still out crushing it today.

    I worked helping build all of the original lifts there and then spent a couple of years there skiing and climbing before returning to Washington, my home state, to help further develop our great ski areas, Crystal Mountain, Alpental, Stevens Pass, Mount Pilchick, Mount Baker, and then helping build Whisler/Blackholm! I started skiing at Snoqualmie Pass in 1953. I started skiing with the Hyak Ski Patrol in 1962. I retired from patrolling in 2022 after 60 years, many of which were as a professional patrolman. My nickname became ‘Hyak Joe’, why? Not sure, except I quickly became known for my ‘over the top’ skiing. ‘Hyak Joe is still (I’m going on 78 now!) my nickname here in the Cascade ski areas. If you ever see Warren Millers' promotional film on the Alpental Ski Area I was selected to be the lead skier for that film. Loved skiing in Jackson Hole, and especially the ‘crazies’ that I got to know back in the day! NO LIMITS was the motto of the day! And we lived it each and every day! I especially loved skiing with Pepi Steigler! He taught me everything there was to know about ski steep, deep, and especially ‘cliff diving’!!! Those were some of the best times of my of my life!!! My true ski buddies were Dick Dorworth, CB Vaughn, Ron Funk and Dick Buick (RIP), and Jim McConkey (98) (Yep, Shanes's (RIP) dad, and one of my best friends. Jim taught me how to ski powder at 60+ MPH. Crazy…RIGHT???!!! Anyway, thanks for kindling some of my fondest memories!!!❤️❤️❤️

    that local rope tow was called Kiwanis ski slope in Gorhan Maine behind the primary school 2 miles from my parents farmhouse where we strapped on our bear tooth bindings and skied nights for 50 cents. Gregs father worked in the theater dept. at the local univ. campus. We eventually moved on to an A frame at Sugarloaf. That was 50+ years ago.

    I love this movie. For the record, Doug Coombs was not "hunted down" by the JHSP. However, he was a known violator of closed areas, and happened to get caught, by a ski patroller standing on a groomed run and noticed Coombs, after skiing an closed area above called The Headwall. Doug traversed through an in-bounds closed cliff (there were signs), but it was a big snow year, and he skied over to the untracked Headwall ridge. There was 10" new snow, and the avalanche hazard was high, and Doug skied above unsuspecting public. Doug was also an employee of Jackson Hole Ski Resort as a Ski Ambassador. He broke his contract. Bad choice. Poor timing.

    It's amazing how many people can say this film changed their lives. The moment most engrained in my brain is the Plake intro at 25:54. I just sat in awe in my friend's basement as a kid and knew immediately what I wanted to do in life. :)

    A generation before this was the legendary Stein Eriksen: leather boots, wood skis, leg breaking bindings. Plake, Schmidt, & Hattrup inspired a whole generation of "extreme" skiers. The level of progression is exemplified by the antics on the Freeride World Tour. This film is iconic. 👍

    Obsession is what this is all about, in a good way. Like these guys i find that obsession in skiing. Since i was in my early teens it was all i could think about for many of those formative years. When i went to Uni i couldn't afford it for a long time, but got back into it again at late 20s and early 30s and have not stopped for a couple of decades now, every chance i get. Love it so much as an adrenaline source and an exercise. I do wish they had park skiing when i was a kid though 🙂 I built my own jumps back then trying to emulate the video clips, and got chased about the mountain by the ski patrol and has my season pass confiscated twice for enjoying myself 🙂

    As many have said this film was a life changer. I had it on VHS and played it endlessly. Skiing was and is still a big part of my life. Scot Schmitz was a big influence on my skiing. I did everything in my power to become as smooth as Scot. Of course he skies at a completely different level. I am now 65 and have skied at many of the areas in this video and will be headed out to Big Sky this winter. My friends and I are all still skiing and hiking to the steeps. Skiing has made my life so much more complete. Thanks

    I grew up in Colorado and heard about Jackson Hole in the early days. I think I first skied there in 1972. I've dropped into S&S on a bet. Did a body smear but bounced right up and skied out looking like a hero (just very lucky). I lived in Lander for many years, which wasn't very far from Jackson as the crow flies, and skied JH about four days a month. Now I live in the NW about 40 minutes from a local ski area. I miss those steeps from Jackson, but I enjoy skiing weekdays without the crowds. Jackson Hole and the town of Jackson just isn't same anymore. Just a bunch of rich people that don't have any business skiing the tram.

      Just found this. We all knew about you guys. You all were a myth, legends of sorts. Like the early hotdoggers, you were of the same fraternal legacy. I used to work late hand tuning and working in the shops of the 80's hoping to become anywhere near as good as you wreckless monsters !. True mountain masters !. Still chasing that dream today.

      OH MY GAWD !!!!.........Gotta watch that again. What an amazing docu-retrospective of a part of my life driven by what I perceived in Powder, and mythical stories of these Jackson Hole Corbet's junkies. Barely any different than the outlaw hotdogger stories of skiers across the country that expanded our perception of what skiing could look like, and be for us amateurs and dreamers. What your story reveals for me is the unstoppable dedication, and passionate drive behind generations of skiers that are well beyond the limitations and prohibitions for the average skier such as "Closed" signs. The intuition, expertise, experience, and responsibility necessary to be amongst this fraternity of the top level of any skiers, anywhere. I'm sure there are others, but this is an American legacy. What a tragic political mess it became for those that endured through to freedom for the region to be accessible. We never heard that side of the struggle. Thank you JHAF. RIP Doug Coombs and the rest that have given the ultimate sacrifice to the lifestyle. Adam in Henderson, Nv.

    Born in Anchorage, AK 1978. Me and my friends didn’t just worship this film (watched over 100 times) we emulated this style of radical skiing in arguably the most extreme place on earth. In the 80s it was all neon ski coats, flashy bindings, long boards, long poles, hats with style and my god the memories of a sunny day after 36 inches of powder! I met my maker in those moments at Alyeska resort in Girdwood, AK. Out of bounds was the norm and the freedom of expression was yours for the taking. This movie literally changed my life! Much love my friends.

      Was going to comment the same...His views sure didnt age well. Back in 2015 my wife and I did a once in a lifetime 3 month trip out West in a Jeep professionally built for extended camping (we picked it up cheap). One part we came over Black Bear Pass into Telluride. Was looking forward to it as I thought it would be this rustic old mining town. Instead, saw a bunch of financial businesses, high end realtors, a bunch of fancy shops catering to the rich, exoensive restaurants and friggin poetry reading. Stayed overnight at a camping spot and headed over Imogen into Ouray the next day. At the time...much nicer although with rhe explosion in people going off road now, no idea what the place or the trails are like. Sold the Jeep once we got back

      @@michaelh6743. You’ve GOT to know that you sound just like one of the rich clientele those “expensive restaurants and friggin poetry readings” cater to when your start your comment by mentioning your “Jeep professionally built for extended camping “! Do you think any of those old, “authentic” Telluride ski bums would have EVER road-tripped in a professionally built anything?! Just a thought to chew on!

    • @michaelh6743
      @michaelh6743 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @johns3106 Haha..i was trying to avoid saying the cringeworthy word "overlanding". At the time, I was living overseas with my gf, now wife. Applied for a 30 day Visa and instead the embassy gave her a 10 year multi entry Visa so that got my mind going. Was on a site called Bringatrailer (early days before it started catering to the rich crowd) and someone mentioned Expedition Portal and you could pick up capable camping rigs for cheap. Looked that night and found the Jeep that had been listed for sale for a long time so got a wild hair and bought it site unseen. Wired money to my Dad. Planned a 3 month trip out West doing everthing I always wanted to do as a kid. Never had a 4 wheel drive and we dont have mountains in Florida where I grew up so learned on the fly. We put about 10000 2 lane and trail miles on the rig driving around New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, and California. Spent 80 percent of the nights in the Jeep sleeping in weather down to almost 20. Never had a disagreement with my gf so we both passed that test I guess. Sold it when I got back. Whole trip cost me about 7k. Once in a lifetime trip. West is so beautiful.

    This movie changed everything and was the catalyst and original spark of everything X to come. This movie showcased snowboarding, and inline skating to millions for the first time. The X Games and freestyle skiing and the intro of Snowboarding into the Olympics all can give homage to what was created here and what it meant to the skiing/snowboarding extreme sports world back in the 80's and still to this day.
