I just did a bit of leveling today too. right before it hits spring here in Australia. I had a lot of winter grass grow this over the winter and its the first year that we have been in this place and this time I mowed the lawn I cut it as low as my new toro mower would go to get rid a lot of that winter grass and help the summer grass grow once it starts to warm up in the next few weeks, I needed up using a good lawn soil from a hardware shop and that has worked a treat over this first year to sort of level the lawn but it really just gives it a massive growth spurt and I think next pay I might even put a few pegs in the ground and string line it just because its on a hill and slopes up to down and right to left I want to make sure there is no high spots.
The zoysia in our neighborhood all looks bad. I don't think people or their lawnservices know how to take care of it. Glad to see you have good luck with it.
Hey there Allyn, was wondering if (when you have the time) you would consider doing a video on how grass seed is actually harvested n prepped for sale???

What kind sand Is It? I see that like fine beach Sand, Is that correct? I do not know if I can use synthetic sand since we do not have this available, only synthetic and black soil that we use during soding. Other thing Is that my emerald Zoysia took like 6 months to achieve 3-4", some sods aré not growing, only stay Green at 1" So I dont know if leveling Will chokeout those parts.
I am on my third lawn care company in nearly 9 years of living here in Florida. Lately since they changed their tech, I’m finding that my st Augustine is now suffering from areas of fungus and also sod webworm plus broad leaf weeds area appearing on areas where the at Augustine was solid and lush. At my wits ends, as it appears most the lawn care firms near me start well but then after a year decline with their service. I don’t expect miracles for my yard, just would like to keep what I have.
As a zoysia owner who scalps and levels multiple times a year in south Texas, I was wondering why you didn’t scalp first....makes sense! I didn’t battle torpedo...I had common Bermuda. After two years, I’ve eradicated it. 100% zoysia now with ZERO WEEDS like you said.

I’m a fan of using soil or loam rather than sand for leveling. I have a spot in my front yard where we removed a tree 🌲 and it keeps settling every year…I level it with loam before my fall overseeing and it seems to work well. Hopefully this is the last year I need to level it! 😆😆
I'm in New Jersey with a zoysia back yard and a turf type tall poa trivialis front yard 😅. I call the zoysia happy grass because of the way it grows all over itself.
Do you have a source that will help identify what different grasses look like? I want to identify the grass in my yard and start working to have grass type only over time. Thanks!
Take some blades to your local extension office or nursery. They should be able to help you identify your grass type. If its thriving rite now then you know its warm season at least. Hope that helps.
I've not heard anything bad yet about the my4sons but yes it does look a little off. Mr. Hayne. I have a couple of questions that maybe you can answer. I live in Southern California about 60mi east of Los Angeles, The weather is hot and dry for most of the summer, routinely reaching in the triple digits, and no rain. I currently have a lawn that I inherited from the former owner, and I have been watching your channel for a while. My back yard has no lawn just concreat and a retaining wall that holds a hill back. My front lawn is small. Roughly 2600 square feet. I have numerous problems with watering mainly there was no sprinkler control, and I ended up replacing all the valves and installing a controller. Now that I have had the sprinklers working for the last 3 months, my lawn is nice and green, with LOTS of weeds. Also I have some "big" dips and valleys in the lawn that the former owner has never taken care of. so I need to continue to work on the sprinklers, they have sunk down, below ground level have nice little circular holes and need to be pulled up again, and the weeds need to go, and the ground needs to be leveled. Should I just kill off what I have and plant Zoysia? Would Zoysia be a good choice? Should I really battle it out and save what I have and start weeding. I love the look of your lawn, Wish I had it here at my home. Thanks for your answer.

Get the grass thick by proper feeding, sun and water and mowing often (2, even 3 times a week if you can get it growing right). Once thick, you're ready to fight. Start mowing tall (4-5"), and pulling carefully and religiously by sections, if not just scouring your yard and hand weeding before every time you mow. You'll get the hang of it, developing an eye and a feel when pulling (so that you get the whole thing-- or a lot more of it), and then decide if the progress is worth the work (it's a lot of work). I've rid most my 5k' lawn of it. There's not enough I really feel bothered by it anymore, and I know what to do and what it will take if and when I care. We'll see what happens this spring.

My thought exactly. Not sure why someone would want to smother the grass and lose the lawn appeal only to and wait months for it to fill in again. Gradually fill it in over that same time frame and have a great looking lawn throughout the whole process. To each there own.
I’ve got St. Augustine Grass and am looking to top dress with seaweed/sand compost free from city of Fort Lauderdale. Any concerns or suggestions Allyn?
Did you kill it? At the 20:25 mark you had an unidentified weed, it looks like Virginia Buttonweed which I understand impossible to kill. Did you get rid of it and if so, how?
Always used sandy loam for leveling as it’s sort of a sandy dirt, rather than straight sand, which can cause burning in sunny areas if you don’t water frequently. Similar to greens burning up on some golf courses since they have such a high sand content and are obviously cut very low. You can also mix some fine sand into regular topsoil in a wheelbarrow and spread. Prefer to have a much higher soil content than sand. Different in different areas of the country and also depends on grass type.
You could have used spray paint to mark the sections that you needed to level. And the marks would have shown you the exact areas that needed to be adjusted? Love your channel.
The long dormant brown phase is the only reason I don't go with a warm season grass. Then again I have brown cool season grass for 2 summer months. Transition zone problems. 🥴
im in chicago area and is going to do the pre-emergency in Mid-April. I also want to level some lower spot. Should I do it before the pre-emergency or after pre-emergency? Also, whats the benefit of using sand than top soil in cool season grass area? and when can I start mowing again after putting down the sand? how many days later I meanThank you so much
Great video! I’m preparing to level my yard so this video is a huge help and great reference. Your not joking we get the “Iowa gray” for months in the winter!
Just bought a house and the backyard is nothing but dirt and weeds/cover. It’s extremely bumpy and unleveled. A lot of sitting water after a rain. I need to start from scratch. Currently killing the weeds off, but to start the leveling off on dirt, do I do soil or sand in those completely dirt holes? There’s no grass so no dirt-to-grass ratio. Just dirt. Should I do a mix of top soil mixed with sand? Then do a new reseed of my lawn?
I'm in So Cal near Disneyland. My lawn has a mix of St. Augustine, Kentucy bluegrass, Red Fescue and Dallis grass. I want to buy seed to start filling in all bare areas in. What Type of seed should I buy? Also, I have some low areas and was going to use sand to level. How deep of a hole can I use sand in?
Does putting sand on grass make sense ? i mean dosn't it get heated in summer maybe it can dry the grass out ! can i topdress my lawn with sand while reseeding ?

Yesss! Another LCN video! I've been waiting all week! You and The Lawn Tools have great content in your videos, along with humor, which I always enjoy! 💪👍
From videos I saw including ryan knorr, mix 50 percent sand with 50 percent top dressing and spread with a rake n then use the lawn leveler far enough so the grass is not covered.
Yes but if you are going to sod, that means opening the ground up completely and if you are going to do that then you can just regrade the existing soil to fix bumps so there should be no need for a leveling agent
I what to thicken my lawn. I live in south eastern VA. I have a St Augustine lawn. Can I mix in this Zoysia grass or should I consider something else ?
Would I use sand to level my lawn in Upper Michigan? I have mostly Kentucky Blue grass and perennial rye-grass. Our growing season even for grass is very short, we average almost 200 inches of snow each year.
Dismiss NXT is labeled to control torpedo grass in St. Augustine grass. Its sulfentrazone + carfentrazone. Thanks a million for that article on torpedo grass from the newsletter. There was a guy on amazon reviews who said he was able to get rid of all his torpedo by doing 1 application ever week for 6 weeks with the product. Temps must be lower than 85. I've started hitting it right now @ 90 and its browning my grass a bit, but the st Aug is still alive. But in fall when temps are in 70s I'm going to be hitting really heavy with this product.
I talked to Dismiss. Yes it was labelled, but when it came to Torpedo-grass they didn't seem to be too confident over the phone. Need to remember that it's not the brand, but the percentage of the active ingredients. Sulfentrazone in recommended amounts is safe for St. Aug, and will kill a number of weeds including torpedo grass, but won't take out Torpedo on the first go. Can't remember listing for Carfentrazone. Success may well be something to do with these products being combined. The dude with continued repeated applications may have been on to something, though I'd be hesitant to hit it weekly as that's not necessarily enough time for your grass to give you feedback (in another word, it's RISKY). But I'm glad he did. Now we have some testimony to base our experiments on.
Hi Alan, I’m a cool season grass guy but was wondering if it’s true that Bermuda grass is so dominate, that it pushes certain weeds out. Heard talk about that for awhile but wasn’t sure how true it was. Thanks for all you do
As part of the mower review, would you please check how full it can get the bag, and how well it work as it gets close to a full bag? I've had some mower that barely get the bag 2/3 full but can remember my Dad's old Snapper HiVac would pack that sucker completely full.
I feel like I already know your going to say throw’er down but I have to aerate and overseed in a few weeks. I’m due to throw some milorginite down. This might have been discussed but a thought crossed my mind. If I drop milo down tomorrow and overseed in 2 weeks, would there still be a decent concentration of nitrogen? Would I have to consider this when picking a starter fert to drop with my seed?
Great video👍but for longer grass I use a large push broom to work the sand in, never wet it as it makes it harder to play with but maybe give it a try see if that helps 👍
One notch lower? Grass needs to be 2 to 1.5 inches tall otherwise it won't work down to the soil level. One notch on the Toro might have gotten you to 2.75. watering it was a bad idea as well. Then it clumps and doesn't get down between the grass blades.

Always used sandy loam for leveling as it’s sort of a sandy dirt, rather than straight sand, which can cause burning in sunny areas if you don’t water frequently.

This is all fine, but I have a very large lawn and I can’t get a hose out to the area that I want to level?
im in chicago area and is going to do the pre-emergency in Mid-April.
Still scared too level my lawn. I’ll just keep my grass lawn, but I do appreciate the Billy Madison reenactment. True fine cinema aficionados!
Why sand only? When would someone use a combination of sand and top soil? Tks.
Man, Alyn, you are the man!! Here is to another season of Dominating the Neighborhood!!
Does putting sand on grass make sense ? i mean dosn't it get heated in summer maybe it can dry the grass out ! can i topdress my lawn with sand while reseeding ?
Can't believe I just subscribed, I watched so many of your enjoyable videos! I ordered Tenacity, The Blue Stuff, and the sticky sauce. I'm excited to see if I can actually pull this off. Thanks for the info and funny videos, your non lawn guy sub.
When is the best time for fall pre emergent in new jersey?
How can I get rid of torpedo grass in my st Augustine grass lawn?
I want to know how he corrected it here in the Zoysia. What does it look like now (getting better?).
Hi there just wondering if I can use this mason sand to level my st Augustine grass there is to much bumps. Looks like the sod is separated from each other. It’s year old grass they put it down when I build the house. Looks like they didn’t lay it down properly. Thank you. And just suscribed to your chanel I live in st Augustine fl
Can your methods be use any place in the country, or just in your area.
Sir, what machine do u recommend to cut Zoysia grass with?
Well there ya go. Healthy Zoysia in warm season areas, allowing lower chemical inputs. Win win.
Agreed 🤘👊
Does anyone know if you can sand level Turf Type Tall Fescue?
Yesss! Another LCN video! I've been waiting all week! You and The Lawn Tools have great content in your videos, along with humor, which I always enjoy! 💪👍
thanks Bob!
Awesome! Thanks. My Zoysia back yard is perfect, but I'm battling an invasion of Coastal Bermuda in the front. Love this grass!
From videos I saw including ryan knorr, mix 50 percent sand with 50 percent top dressing and spread with a rake n then use the lawn leveler far enough so the grass is not covered.
sounds like a good plan
are you sure that is zoysia? mine has finer blades. what type zoysia do you have?.
Yes I'm sure. It's Empire.
Looks more like carpet grass
How do you get rid of the torpedo?
Would you recommend seeding after you do this IF you have a cool season lawn?
Only seed in the spring and fall in cool climates
Can you lay sod on top of the leveling sand?
Yes but if you are going to sod, that means opening the ground up completely and if you are going to do that then you can just regrade the existing soil to fix bumps so there should be no need for a leveling agent
Can you mix Saint Augustine with zoysia Grass
I would not recommend it. They don't play nice.
Is torpedoe grass the same as crabgrass?
No it's very different.
thanks Alynn i've been trying to level lawn up in the northeast(Rochester) with straight top soil. Has really pan out great. thankyou.
Bermuda or zoysia. Which would you say is a thicker grass?
do you have a video on the proper way to level a cool season lawn?
I'll have to look into that - I was using the DNXT but it dinged my St Aug really hard everytime I used it so I stopped.
Any tips on removing that wild Bermuda from St Augustine?
the only thing you can do it when it gets real bad is cut it out and resod. or get Provista which is glyphosate tolerant.
Legit. You made this look like sooo much work and extremely labour intensive
Im sorry did that receipt say that the leveling rake cost $143 before tax and shipping?!
Zoysia vs Bermuda. What's better?
Did you ever do the review on that Greenworks mower?? I cant find it if you did
Truck’s looking good with the new rims and tires! Keep up the great content brotha!
Thanks bro ! 👊
Hi Alan, I’m a cool season grass guy but was wondering if it’s true that Bermuda grass is so dominate, that it pushes certain weeds out. Heard talk about that for awhile but wasn’t sure how true it was. Thanks for all you do
yes it can do that for sure. It also likes a lower cut which can also help combat weeds.
As part of the mower review, would you please check how full it can get the bag, and how well it work as it gets close to a full bag? I've had some mower that barely get the bag 2/3 full but can remember my Dad's old Snapper HiVac would pack that sucker completely full.
The grass looks super green where you leveled nicely done brother
Awesome shades dude!
I’m looking forward to your review of the Greenworks.
Thanks bro !
When is that review of the 25 inch mower coming out?!
Allyn the question I have is can this method of leveling work for turf type tall fescue and fine fescues with heavy clay soils like we have in NC?
Yes it sure can .
What's the best mixture would you recommend for upstate New York?
One notch lower? Grass needs to be 2 to 1.5 inches tall otherwise it won't work down to the soil level. One notch on the Toro might have gotten you to 2.75. watering it was a bad idea as well. Then it clumps and doesn't get down between the grass blades.
How do you plan to push out the torpedo grass? ...Thicken the zoysia?
