  • It's that time of year again for topdressing, leveling, and overseeding of my lawn but this year I finally tried out SAND as my leveling material of choice. There are benefits to sand capping a lawn but also some things to be aware of when you make that choice. In the video I discuss why I have chosen this for my lawn and what has to happen going forward to maintain it.

Regarding your mole problem I highly recommend the following trap. I've caught 10+ moles with this, and it's easy to set. Just make sure you put the mole trap in their traveling tunnel, and NOT their feeding tunnel: www.amazon.com/Wire-Tek-1001-EasySet-Eliminator/dp/B000SDKGC6#:~:text=The%20Easy%20Set%20Mole%20Eliminator,all%20species%20of%20moles%20worldwide!

Great video Ryan. I bought 12 5-gallon buckets and I can get .45 tons of mason sand at a time. This ensures I don’t try to bite off too much work at once, and it only costs $16.50 per visit to the quarry. Sand leveling is addictive and I will continue to keep leveling my lawn as I’ve seen a significant difference when mowing.

Not to mention every year. Also it seem like as years progress you would start to have a lot of sand on the lawn. Irrigation heads would be buried in the ground and need raised.

I’ve got moles this year for the first time in 3 years of my new lawn. I’ve already caught 4 of them this year.

Could you imagine Connor trying to figure out the sand spreader.. “what the heck is that!” Haha great video I just did my leveling last weekend. Used a sand and top soil mix.

I think the best and worst part of this video is at the 6:00 minute mark where you see Ryan throwing a shovel full of sand and his nicely manicured lawn, and his neighbors lawn of random weeds and wild grass next to it. The nicest part of the neighbors lawn is where Ryan's Ryegrass seed weed a little over into the neighbors lawn and germinated. It is amazing how many people have no clue that throwing down some quality seed and proper fertilizer and a few applications of pre and post emergent herbicides will get you 95% of the way towards having a really nice looking lawn. Not perfect, but for most homes, just that would give them about the best lawn on the block. - SIDE NOTE - my wife just walked in and asked me what I was doing and I said I was watching some "lawn porn" and she knew exactly what I meant LOL. Anyway, I prefer turf that spreads by stolons and rhizomes so they self-heal and spread, but there's no denying the proof is in the results in Ryan's lawn.

I do light topdressing on my bentgrass green every two weeks... Its a pain but it is the best leveling and firming technique there is.

This is on my list of things to do come spring. my lawn is so bumpy I have to go really slow so I don't get thrown off or damage the lawn tractor. What is going to really suck is that I have an acre to do....

Nice video! I watched Connor Ward's video on the sand thing a couple years ago, and now yours. Cool stuff, and I'm *interested* in levelling with sand, but I think I'll go with the topsoil/compost first time around.

Amazing job Ryan! I have been looking all over here in PA for a place to rent a top dresser but cannot find one. I have a lot of uneven spots in my yard beyond the help of sand. I cannot bring myself to do a full lawn renovation as this isn’t my forever home. Some day!

Great videos Ryan, I’ve been following you since spring. Toke all your advice and now in my fall renos. I tried to order from Seed Superstore and they weren’t able to deliver in Canada for me. They referred me to Speare Seeds in Ontario Canada. With my young kids and a dog they referred me Perennial Ryegrass so it’s been over a week now and my Rye grass is growing very well. Thanks for all your tips!
    Marc
