  • In this video, I chronicle every single step of replacing the steel heater pipe that connects the thermostat housing to the heater core and feeds hot coolant to the throttlebody in a 2010 Honda CRV. This video applies to many Honda vehicles with the K engine
    This was a miserable job, but I got through it and
    so can you. Here to help! But I can’t always get to comments in time
    19510-r40-a50 is the part number

    Great video!!! Thanks Drew...you got me though this job! I want to mention what went bad for me in the hope that it helps someone else.
    2007 CRV EX
    1) Be very careful with the throttle body...while carefully disconnecting the coolant lines, one of the tubes crumbled as it was completely rusted out. I couldn't get the intake plenum out without removing the throttle body. Throttle bodies can be very expensive, and you have to know whether the car was manufactured in America or Japan. For the cars manufactured in Japan, the throttle body can cost much more. Of course, my CRV was manufactured in Japan. I was able to get an aftermarket throttle body for a fraction of the OEM price and it is working just fine.
    2) The heater pipe broke off inside the thermostat housing as expected. Couldn't get it out and had to remove the thermostat housing. The easiest to access bolt (top one) was seized inside the plastic housing. I had to cut the plastic around that bolt to remove it and damaged the housing. Don't waste your time with the housing from AutoZone, it doesn't allow those special bolts to pass though when attaching the thermostat.
    3) A re-learn procedure will probably be required when disconnecting your throttle body and was required for adding the new one. I was getting a P057 code for idle higher than expected and it was idling just over 1000 rpm. The re-learn procedure did not work without using a scan tool to reset it and then it relearned just fine by driving the car.
    Thanks again Drew!

      Wowsers! Yours was quite the adventure! Thank you for these comments I hope they get seen. Maybe there is a way for me to pin them
      Just a note: the Vin number tells a lot about where the car was made. J is Japan. A full list can be found googling (check out the Buick envision - made in china!). Glad you’re through it! Please like and subscribe if you haven’t already :)

      @@minibikemadman Honda Dealership can give you the pipe number. Then go to “the bay” and order it from one of the stores. Don’t forget the OEM O-Ring. It has to be OEM. Yes! Manifold comes off.

      @jonathanmelendez23 great to know ok ya I got a pipe on ebay a oem one ..was the last one so took my chances and said it fit my 08 ex-L . I had to do one on my 2007 Acura rdx before the crv and all these pipes rot and leak. The only crappy issue with the K series.

    I did this job today and your video helped. Thank you.
    My tips are: DEFINITELY have 10mm and 12mm bolt extractors on hand. Replace all four manifold gaskets, you don't want leaks and the gaskets are very cheap. There is no need whatsoever to remove the throttle body from the manifold, unnecessary work. Use a liberal amount of silicone grease on the heater pipe O-ring. Use a Honda heater pipe if you can find one. An aftermarket pipe MIGHT work but if it doesn't, you get to do this mess all over again.

    When tightening the intake plenum DO NOT start at 1 end ALWAYS START IN THE CENTER or you could have a high-risk and cracking the intake and having a big problem just a quick tip. Great video super informational just wanted to throw that out there though.

    Great video. I saw blue stains on the engine block on my wife’s CRV when I was doing an oil change. I tracked it down to the thermostat housing. Had no idea there was a metal pipe there all rusted out.
    I plan to do this as soon as I get the parts in. The past comments were also very helpful and will try to leave the throttle body connected to the intake.

    Thanks for the video. I just took mine all apart yesterday and my pipe was broke off in thermostat housing as well. What a bugger to get that piece out! I was able to leave the throttle body on and just left it attached to the intake plenum. I did take out the air filter box and battery to give me room to see and work. Those came out pretty easy. Thanks again .

    Drew... Thank you. You got me through a nasty repair. (2010 CRV 4x4 LX)
    Thank you brother. (great tip btw on the long bent needle nose pliers, I had no idea how badly I needed those)
    I bought my pipe on Amazon "COOL STAR 19510R40A50 New upgraded Heater Pipe Comp Heater Compatible with 2008-2016 Honda Accord 10-11 CRV Odyssey Tourer 19510-R40-A50" It fit perfectly and included the gasket.
    Also, to the commenters... Thank you.
    I left the throttle body attached - great call
    I changed the 13 year-old starter also when I was there.
    It was a BEAR to get the 14mm and 17mm bolts out even with the plenum removed.

    The best how-to video I've run across, bar none. I was on the fence about doing this job myself and finding this video convinced me to DIY. I had to source the pipe from Japan for 4x the dealer cost as well due to the backorder. In the meantime I watched this video three times and then queued it up in my garage as I did the work. I really appreciated the level of detail like how to disconnect each wire harness & retaining clips. I had the same issue with the lower wire connector clip swelling in the housing and had to wire tie it the same way. Also appreciated were the tips like on the brass hammer to seat the sockets, rags in the intake manifold and all the fastener access tips. Thanks to you I got the job done in a few hours. After seeing the trouble you had in removing the pipe end / o-ring, I cut the old pipe on the straight section. That way I was able to work the old piece back and forth to remove it without breaking the end in the plastic housing. Thank you, thank you, thank you for making a miserable job easy.

    This video is a car-saver (lifesaver !!). Visually, because of rust ring at leaking joint, I first thought I had a rubber hose with rusted away clamp. Removed steering pump, then alternator, for access and THEN discovered hard pipe - still shiny enough that I thought it was hard plastic. Wasted goodly amount of hours with wrong diagnosos. Found video (only other one on TH-cam) and finally knew nature of the joint. Have ordered thermostat housing (just in case) and steel pipe. This video is VERY thorough and complete for repair, start to finish; it is invaluable for getting the repair done with a proper approach and technique.

    If you are watching this to do the job on a 2007 CRV, good luck. It’s a different air intake and support. Had I been able to remove the single upper support bolt, it might have been an easier job but it was going to snap off which would have been a nightmare leaving me with no intake support so I couldn’t get the intake out. I removed the lower support bolt which forced me to simply pull the intake forward. No possible way to get it out to the right no matter how much you try to remove. That meant I had to disconnect all wires on the right side of engine, airbox base, upper rad hose etc. was no fun getting the pipe out especially with the intake in the way. Had to cut the pipe above the starter which let me remove in two pieces. Absolute bitch getting the pipe out of the housing. If I could have heated the pipe it might have helped. I kept soaking it with wd40 and I was twisting it back and fourth while pulling upward. After an hour or so I got it out safely. Hardest and scariest thing I have had to deal with.

    Not a hard job as long as you don't try and shortcut by working around things that you can just remove. On an 08 CRV I also remove the upper radiator core support and hood latch as well as the airbox assembly both upper and lower. Makes the job much easier... I would recommend replacing the Thermostat casing and housing while in there along with the small heater hose that runs parallel to the pipe. If your starter has not been replaced give it a good look over, they are cheap enough AM to replace preemptively

    hello there. Where did you buy that piece? I am looking for a CRV 2012 with the same problem, Honda 19510-R40-A60 that is the part number. Is a little diferent but more or les is the same.

      Hello! I bought it on eBay, for about three times the price of the Honda dealer, because it's back ordered in the United States

    Just got the pipe out. Used the seal puller too. No cracking but I scored the inside of the bore a little from using the puller. You think I should replace it. I'd hate to put the whole thing together just to do the whole job over again.

    What a bad design shame on honda engineers and choice to use a non stainless steel part.

    • @DrewGarage
      @DrewGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I am inclined to agree with you. I am always careful what I say in the videos, of course, because I am not an engineer by trade, but I have designed my own power trains for hot rods, and every little bit in peace that makes them go down the road including their HVAC systems etc., and I always show respect and concern for the person who may have to work on it in the future. I to am disappointed by this design

      @@DrewGarage I got the part and could already see inside the pipe was a trace of rust on the inside, the out side is just painted but on this pipe it seems to rust from the inside out, best to use coolant with the best rust inhibitors.

      @DrewGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Noexcusis that’s terrible :( I use factory coolant in everything so hopefully Honda’s coolant doesn’t aid in rusting

      if it was made of stainless steel it'd cost more to produce therefore raising the cost of the vehicle

      Heater pipe is actually what it is called. Coolant pipe may work, too but heater pipe is the honda term. I am glad it helped :) please subscribe, this channel has a lot of honda content :)

      I’m not sure off the top of my head, but it is important to note there are two different pipes under 07 through 11 CRV… I would look up the part numbers for both that will tell you for sure

      @@DrewGarage thanks Honda has either discontinued the heater pipe for my 04 Element or it’s on back order dealers don’t know, ditto for Dorman. Hello! It’s different for every model and sometimes different for different years / a 2007-9 and a 2010-11 CRV are different, for example. Best to look it up on a honda parts site like honda parts connection or call your local dealer

    • @DrewGarage
      @DrewGarage  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I totally get where you’re coming from. And I know the answer. Sadly, it is of manufacturing. Don’t forget, the engine is assembled separately from the car, and then shoved up into the engine bay from underneath when the car is made! Sucks for us. Please subscribe
