Nissan Rogue Transmission Swap - Part 1

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 23 ธ.ค. 2024
- It's transmission swap time! The new CVT has arrived from the Nissan dealership, and we're going to get this 2010 Nissan Rogue rolling again.
I also plan to do a TEARDOWN and inspection of the old CVT unit in the last part of this series.
Comments and suggestions on this format of longer "how-to" videos is welcome and appreciated.
Thanks so much for your support, and as always, enjoy!
Ivan
I watched all 4 videos you made for this trans swap. I just want to say I really admire your patience you had throughout all the hardships you encountered while completing this job. You made the whole project look like fun. Thank you for taking the time to make this tutorial.
Ivan's one of the best shows on TH-cam. Glad he works as hard as he does for the viewing public. Smart kid.
Replaced the transmission in my Fusion Hybrid this winter, glad to see someone else is willing to do this themselves. You are an inspiration for people to do it themselves.
Diagnostics are very mentally stimulating, but nuts and bolts stuff is very experience-driven. I think I have an above average understanding of automotive systems, but any time I'm doing new R&R jobs (like my t-belt), I always manage to make an ass of myself at some point in the job. Professionals make it look very easy.
You seem very confident with both sides of automotive service, which is very impressive. I wish you luck with this trans swap.
I make an ass of myself more often than you might think...but it makes the videos way more entertaining xD
Would you know if the stepper motor is accessible in a 2009 Rogue.
*Scotty would do this job in 4 minutes.*
Step 1. Jump out of the trunk
Step 2. Remove transmission
Step 3. Install transmission
Step 4. Do a burn out
Garrett Martin 🤣😂
you hit the nail on the head with the burnout lol
Garrett Martin scotty would do the job in 4 minutes and it would last for only 4 days.
Garrett Martin I wonder what scottys neighbors think of him burning out all the fucking time
Garrett Martin Scotty would say buy a Toyota and you won't have to replace transmission.....
Nice work Ivan! Looking forward to part two. So glad you decided to bring us along on this change out.
As fascinating as diagnostic videos are Ivan i think its good to show a "project" like this every once in a while to break it up. I'm very interested to see how it goes. Thanks for taking the time to share with the people! Its a hell of a time of year for this to happen. Its robbed you of great "Christmas special" material.
Very cool Ivan. Thanks for taking the time to share it with us!
My pleasure! Thanks for watching, John!
Nuts and bolts can be very interesting. You're still entertaining to watch :)
Part 2 should get a bit more exciting ;)
Thank you Ivan,,, This vid is what I was waiting for.... Let me grab a cup of coffee and get the lesson started!!
Excellent and you did great, . Looking forward to part 2
I just can't understand why Nissan doesn't sell parts for this unit.
I would imagine how laborious this teardown will be by doing it alone. Anyway, great and very informative video.
the fact that it made it to 186 thousand miles says enough. if I have my rouge long enough to get that many miles I won't complain.
My Versa only made to half that before the transmission had to be replaced.
I've got 250K on my Subaru. Needs head gaskets, though...
Usually a head gasket job is cheaper and easier than a tranny replacement. I'll take the Subaru with a 5-speed please :)
I had a friend tell me to buy a Nissan Rouge......it'll go over 200 K reliably. At 143K miles, I am planning on paying this bitch off before the tranny goes, and I am trading it in for a HONDA. I've owned several hondas- all of them solid reliable cars. Nissans- JUNK.
I had a hundred and forty-one thousand miles on my Nissan Rogue 2013 Nissan Rogue SV all wheel drive running great until someone smashed in the back of my car cuz he looking wasn't looking what he was doing and my insurance company totaled it
You did an excellent job an narration. Everyone has their own style. Just keep it simple, and you'll have 100k subs soon.
My Rogue made it to 243,000 miles which ended Friday on the way home from work. This is why I'm here now.
Its always easy to tear things apart but remembering 804 different steps in reinstallation is the part thats the hardest. How are you staying organized with all your nuts and bolts by putting them in the same try??? Why no party line like your buddy Astral Auto Repair??? lol
I'm a Mitsubishi dealer tech. I've done a bunch of CVTs. I've done a Nissan Sentra too. was actually easier. Have fun with the AWD. We can cheat time on our models. Good luck. Love your videos.
That's a big Ivan, time for a lot of patience. Good luck.
Oh I can see the service manual now. Remove battery box, remove transmission. Replace trans, replace bat box.
William Fowler
Scottt would do it 4 minutes.
Step 1. Jump out of the trunk
Step 2. Remove transmission
Step 3. Install transmission
Step 4. Do a burn out
No you got it wrong...the burn out and skid are at the beginning of the videos!
Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics yep, Klowney also does a burn out on his Z28 channel.
you forgot that Scotty starts his video yelling "rev up your engines" then burnout!
I read your background on your website...impressive to say the least....keep up the good work!
Not that you had enough to do but now you have to keep track of the camera angles. Nuts and bolt videos are fine if you master the commentary and you did a fine job keeping us entertained. :)
I'd like to see the diagnosis process for more transmissions. It might make short vids but it's still important to see how you call it right on a very expensive part.
My 1998 primera wagon cvt made it to 290000kms before giving up. Never had a problem for 10years. Only change the fluid once probably should have done it more.
I can tell its a nissan just by seeing the wiring anchors every three inches , I put an engine in my 07 pathfinder wiring was the same exact way !
thanks for the video.
I much should I charge on this job?
The torque converter will be stuck when removing which will make it more hard cause you doing in on the ground it's a way to make it easy for you also the torque bolts are easy to round use a quality socket
wait did you watch part 3 already? ;)
Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics. lol I hope not cant spoil it lol. have done millions lol but I'm down south u will have rust with the exhaust and frame bolts. don't know how far you got or already done but dowel pins get stuck too and have to check fluid at right temperature and it's a certain spot to leave it at cvt fluid expands
Let's hope ivan Fluid Film's or Krown T40's all the rusty bits on this Nissan so it lasts a little longer.
Nicely done Ivan can't wait for part two.Steve from Altoona
hi Ivan. great video, bar the captions. oh well. that's so many bolts clips etc, wow!! I'll keep on watching and have my daughter to tell me what you said behind the camera.
Hi Josh, thanks for the comment! I did look into your request for captions, and apparently TH-cam only puts captions on videos that are shorter than 10 minutes in length. Otherwise I have to put them in manually and am not sure how to do that effectively...yet :)
Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics ah, thanks Ivan for looking into it for me! appreciate your help! :) I'll do my best to follow thru :)
all these manufactures that claim you dont have to change the transmission oil over 100,000 miles,I just most of the time DONT BELIEVE.Even Though their Full Sythetic,I still Do My Trans Service Every 40,000 Miles and filter.Especially Here In Las Vegas,The Heat Cooks Just About Everything,LOL
they want you to buy a new car by 100K ;)
our Nissan dealer told us they are selling about 7 CVTs a day. he said they are typically failing on average at 70k miles. I hate Nissan CVTs.
70k?!? Not 170k? Holy crap I guess my wife got her money's worth out of the original!
Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics Oh she definitely did. We found out all that information when we had to call Nissan because one of our fleets brought in their 2015 Sentra with 90k and the CVT blew out. They still owe 20k on the car so they really don't have a choice.
AFAinHD Productions we got on our 08 Altima coupe 255k 3.5 CVT out of ours now the stepper motor broke I changed it. Ran great for a week now I’m throwing primary pressure switch solonoid. I’m hoping it’s just that or I’ll be doing this. Engine runs insanely strong for 255k.
Mine just failed at 116,000. Apparently it's pretty common.
@@karenhavens4372 Mine failed the other day at 134K..I guess I should feel happy. I don't. ") Like he said, sucks that Nissan doesn't sell parts.
I’m doing an engine replacement and there’s no videos so this is my best bet thankyou
Great video! Finally someone shows the entire process to remove the transmission. It is not exactly what I am working on, which is a 2003 Nissan Murano, but it's close enough. I am trying to decide if this is something I want to take on myself or not. I have a rear main seal leaking on my Murano. I think I can replace it by removing the transmission and transfer case. I can even reseal the transfer case too while it is out. Thanks again for the video. I'm off to watch part 2.
Did you end up fixing your rear main seal leak? How tough was it?
you do a very good job just as you are so don't even worry about that. thank you right Donald?
I had a QR20DE with a CVT once but I"ve heard the QR25's can suck something from the air intake system and damage pistons etc. Just thought I'd mention that incase you want to check and maybe avoid another costly exercise. Think it was bolts on the airbox or something. Not too sure. My CVT used to clunk when coasting and them lightly accelerating again which I found annoying but was apparently normal for them
Looks like fun Ivan.
Watching you struggle with that battery tray reminded me of the Fiat stuff, like the Dart and 500. Same situation with the battery tray being the focus of every wire in the car....
NTB-12-057. Google that Nissan TSB it should apply to your rogue. download the PDF from carmd website (should be the second search result) and read through the details. they gave you a CVT with the old style cooler the new cooler is preferred. Summer months we see a lot of those coming in.
Interesting...is the new style cooler the one that mounts separately in front of the radiator?
Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics you get both engine coolant cooling/warm up as well as a cooler that mounts in front of the radiator.
the bulletin number I gave you may be incorrect however there is the same bulletin, same symptoms same solution for the first gen rogue as well. ok found the ntb for the rogue NTB14-002 Google that one.
that ground strap is there to stop am radio interference, that's why its braided
Interesting...you won't be upset if I leave it off in reassembly?
nope. I'm sure your wife doesn't listen to a whole lot of am radio.
I've read that the braided cables on Subarus that run from the heads to the body actually help electrolysis and the degradation of the head gaskets. I've noticed up here in Maine that if those ground straps haven't corroded off the head gaskets usually aren't leaking. crazy right?
in warm weather (and a warm engine), the CVT without prior notice while driving occasionally lose the ball. When driving slowly, it then stays in L as it were (so the transmission no longer varies), so then I drive 40 km/h at 4000 rpm, for example, and that doesn't really work. Or, on the freeway, it suddenly jerks and revs up and down, which also seems like a mess. I didn't get a CEL but I did get a pending code P0720 secondary speed sensor. It happens occasionally. As soon as I turn off the engine and it cools down, everything is OK again. When I start the engine, I see the dashboard light 'sport' of the CVT flash a number of times.
has all started with oil replacement, it turns out that they put ns2 (red) in it but on the hood are ns1 (blonde) so I changed and gesooled myself but now I have this problem so I'm going to put the temperature above 82 cell goes into emergency mode when 30mint wait can i do it again can you help me that can do . Have you installed a new speed sensor?

its actually a pushbelt in a cvt, the belt push the pullys not pulling them. Something i learn recently. and they look goofy.
my wife and I considered a nissan rogue back in 2014 but went with the sportage instead. Zero issues in 50k miles, but traded it for a 2016 F150 :) Looking forward to your tear down videos. Also would be awesome if you and Eric O got together in State College somewhere for a meet and greet!
16:31 . . . Transmission in a RWD Chevrolet Caprice would have been removed from the car at this point.
Yeahthereeasydropthecross member thenuseatwofootextention
I'm my younger days I did a 79 Caprice Classic transmission by myself. Pulled the bolts, slid it off the pins onto my chest and shimmied out from under it. Reverse to get the replacement in. Whole job took about an hour. Those were the days.
Enjoy watching you're videos. Very entertaining and I always seem to learn something new.
Hey Rick thanks for the kind words :)
I don't know what to do, I started to remove a transmission from a 2009 Nissan Ruger and I had two rings left over from where the tramiccion chassis goes
These type of jobs bring out every cuss word in my vocabulary ... at the top of my lungs. It echoes through the woods, so all my neighbors know I've got another big job outside. :D Hopefully by next year, I'll be inside ... and with a lift!
Figures! Shipping damage! Must've come UPS ... :D They managed to bend the handle on my Wilton vice I bought 6 years ago .. into a pretzel! Must've dropped the damn thing off the loading dock, or rammed it full tilt with a forklift. It took heat and a 4-foot cheater bar to get the thing even remotely straight again ...
Sounds like Nissan is getting pointers from GM. Sell us a whole assembly instead of just a $50 ($400 by the time we get it) part. Unreal!
I always find value in these types of videos. I like to see what tools and techniques different people use on different stuff - I always end up with more tricks. Need all the tricks you can get on these modern tin can, rolling computers! :)
"modern tin can rolling computers"...I think you just hit the nail square on the head right there.
Was sort of hoping you would open the video "Welcome back to the Pine Hollow Transmission Shop".
believe it or not that little tube that's bent is actually a transmission heater not cooler. I guess cvt's take a long time to get up to temp.
Actually it's both a heater AND cooler! First it heats, then it cools :)
Did the rear bumper on that Nissan hold up to you pushing it with another car? What about the paint being squashed and later popping?
The rubber tire distributes the force and soft towel protects paint nicely so no damage done :)
Sometimes pushing a car with another with tire in between is called a Russian tow.
Nice to get back the nuts and bolts stuff indeed! Camera quality and field of view is great. Looking forward to the next part.
I know it doesn't sound good but like the fact that you don't have a fancy lift or hoist like most of us diy'ers either :-)
that is when the video will get interesting, lol.
What if you ordered a CVT Pulley Kit? Do you think with the original damage of the primary pulley, seal and belt in your teardown video, that with a new pulley kit that you could've rebuilt it? look them up on ebay and tell me what you think.
My awd Lexus rx300 trans failed at the same mileage. Oil pump failure. Fluid changed at recommended intervals. $2800 + 16 hours . Ugh
Hey it happens even on Toyotas lol...no car is perfect.
You're doing great Ivan in getting all of that stuff out of the way! So far it looks like it's going pretty well and don't worry about the entertainment as you've got a good personality anyway. Who needs to tell stories? :)))
did you ever get nissan to start a cvt fund yet
the hose that sticking out of the transmission at 20:00 does that attach to anything or is it just a vent/breathing hose?

yes i was hoping you would do this video. thanks
My 2009 Nissan Rogue SL , 115,000 miles, was having recent acceleration problems, now went move forward or reverse. It also does not rev up? Except in park. Bought my car in 2011 with 30,000 miles.
Looking for a good mechanic in NW Austin that I can afford.
I love my car. Please help.
hi Ivan that Sony looks good nice and clear and steady you said it was 300 at bestbuy I looked up bestbuy USA it going for 179.99 did you have to buy anything extra for it like battery, tripod cover with strap? I like the way it captures the operation can you tell me is there something else you prefer or is this it what's your opinion ?
thanks
Sal
My very first camera was a Sony CX230, and the CX405 is basically the same. Never tried anything else, these are pretty reliable and good bang for the buck :)
Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics
thanks Ivan
this video was pretty good, could you please assist me on where i could purchase a new gearbox for Nissan Rogue 2010 and it's cost.
thanks,
The junk and online
Long long ago I need to remove some clips like the ones in the batt tray and got tired of nothing working. Just grab a socket small enough and pushed into the pin forcing it to close and this eneded freeing it. Good vid. Tons of pacience for this jobs. Did CVTs improved from this age to now, or still crappy ?. cheers.
Nice one. This is exciting. Will the dealer sort out the damaged pipe and will he do so before the next episode? The suspense is killing me.

you are a genius love watching your videos.
Picture looks good Ivan. I invested in some cheap lights for my channel. It helped a ton. They are like a reverse umbrella w9th a light in the middle. On a stand. Thirty bucks
Picture quality improved greatly from that. Can’t wait to watch this whole series. I love the nuts and bolts stuff! 😂
great work and nice place behind
Why isn't your wife out there helping you? She's the one that broke the thing. ;)
On a old maual geabox RWD GM the box would be back in and the car back to the customer.

Hi, can you tell me where the output speed sensor in 2009 Nissan Rogue please?
Question
I’ve seen in some vids mechanics add a kit to cool the transmission fluid. They attach it in front of radiator area.
Supposedly it extends the life of the transmission.
What do think of this?
I'm curious on how many cameras and battery packs do you have on hand to record your videos? Any tips on what you have learned. I'm just curious. My GF daughter has a 2013, I'm expecting to have to do this soon. Also, My 2016 Ford escape 2.5 L 4 cylinder is very similar in size and configuration as the rogue and I'm almost hurt and I'm going to have to do something with my transmission soon as it has over 140,000 mi on it but the engine only has just around a hundred The rest of the car has over 500,000 mi on it. I'm at that point where the vehicle is absolutely worthless to try and sell. Love the channel 👍
Did you use the sewing seam ripper?? You need a seam ripper!!!
Doing one now at 238,000 on that transmission. Not too bad guys must have been a Tuesday or Wednesday model at the plant lol.
Mad respect for people that can do this type of shit... No way in hell I'm remembering where everything goes..
hahahah 14 minutes on the battery tray.......I'm not digging on you Ivan or anything about Nissan...just never seen a car centered around a Battery tray......wonder what the book time is for r and r just the battery tray 4 hours? great video Ivan and your shop helper is pretty cool too....
8.5 hours paid under warranty to replace cvt in rouge
The brand new Fiats are the same way. Everything slapped on the battery tray
Hi, like your videos. I need to know at top of theTransmission there is a sensor with the connection as I was lowering the transmission. I had forgot to unhook that sensor needless to say it broke. I got the pigtails for it from the dealership and they gave me the pigtail fit there and they caught the speed sensor. Transmission there is a sensor with the connection.I got the pigtails for it from the dealership and they gave me the pigtail and it fit there and they caught the speed sensor. I need to know what the Color code is to the sensor wires that come down our blue red and yellow and the three prong sensor that goes on the top of the transmission I would really appreciate if you replied to me thank you
I haven't watched all the videos in this series yet but did you install the cvt cooler kit when you replaced the cvt? there are several tsb's for these cvts. they overheat. did you see what the cvt A and B count where in data monitor?
hai, mine is 2013 nissan altima. especially in winter, for the firs 4 to 5 km of each drive. car runs very slow, 30km speed at 2000 RPM.(I can feel the lack of power). once the engine is hot, after 5km. immediately the transmission will properly engaged to engine and run normal. In 2018, I changed transmission, but the same problem is still exist. could you please explain me what is the real issue. Nissan dont want to help me more. would you please advise me. thanks.
It’s normal. Usually in cold months I let my car heat up for about 10 minutes, and it drives fine after.
Everyone must watch Scotty's videos. Heck, he lives about 3 miles from me.
The first tranny swap thing I do when working from the ground is measure the height of the transmission. That's the height the front bumper has to be raised to plus whatever the lowered transmission might be sitting on . Next I raise the vehicle. It makes top work easier on the back.
That's an engineer's approach :)
Its an old man's approach with bad back. I just finished swapping in a new tranny in an AWD with transfer case. Had all four motor mounts , radiator and drive shaft out to fit it. Battery box didn't have the computer hanging on it but everything else was.
Hello...I own a Rogue 08 and recently changed the ttrans oil but im noticing that when ever I put it between R to D i gives me a hit, ive changed 2 torque mounts but keeps doing that...dont know if its the little extra oil I put or another mount...any suggestions? APPRECIATE IT from P.Rico👌
Put the old oil back
Great job so far keep up the good work
Everything is in the details.
Lan bikaina!
Got a 07 sentra with 270k still original cvt
How?? Lol
Wtfffff lol
Does this CVT have transmission fluid coolant lines to the radiator? It looks like antifreeze actually runs through the transmission??? My CVT on long road trips gets hot and starts failing but does fine under 75 miles or so. I was wanting to add an external high performance transmission fluid cooler radiator but looking at this it doesn't seem possible.??? Please reply
How many hrs in all to replace the tans in a 15 ronge
Thank you. I'm about to change mine. Your video is a big help.
My Rogue, 2008, front wheel drive, has over 280,000 and still drives like new!
Wow! How often do you change the CVT fluid?
I've been trying for years my wife goes to work while I stay home playing with my cars, but she doesn't like the idea I have no idea why though
did you do a video with Eric o. of south main auto ?
Jeremy Anthony He did, was maybe a month ago on a 3800 Buick that was all sorts of funky
I am about to replace the transmission in my 2008 nissan rogue, the vehicle has over 200k 😆 it should be fun because I've never done transmission work.
I am amazed you go 187 k miles many don`t make it past 60k CVT`s are junk only good for go carts and snowmobiles great diag
Initially, what was the error code that you had got on the OBD scanner?
Ivan: glad to see this video. Had a 2012 rogue and I'm glad we got rid of it when it had just under 100k on it. I think you may need a few beers bro while you're tearing in to this cvt tranny lol. Can't wait to see part II. Stay safe and have a great weekend...
I have a 2010 Nissan rouge 146k can't make it 100 mile w/o transmission goes into fail safe mode . Then after continual driving transmission slips and won't move until its cooled off
Fun times lol
Do you have part numbers for transmission filters and fluid type? I have a 2015 SL model
after watching how the belt drive works it is very similar to the belt drive on a golf cart the golf cart makes more sence to me
yeah...you can do or fabricate a 4 legged removable mobile support, hook up a chain block, put swivel wheels, Wahla....
My Nissan Rogue 2008 had 204k miles when the transmission started break down and now I’m looking for a new transmission, how much would it cost to buy a used one?
Get a new one, and drive another 200k!
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics how much are new ones?
So what was the cost of new trany?
What symptoms were you experiencing. I am currently having transmission issues with my 2012 lancer it shifts into all gears but wont transfer engine power to the wheels ??
Great video Ivan! I'm glad you're filming the transmission replacement. Wish list would be to film the MPV as well ;-)
How high up is your garage ceiling? If it's 12F you should be able to get a two post asymmetric lift in there.
10ft...but I can make more room if I have to!
Everybody says you need a lift. I agree you can work faster with a lift but that's where the advantage ends. Working off a creeper is more comfortable and when things get out of control they don't fall as far.
Seems like a FWD trans axle would be easier than a RWD unit behind the engine. So far it seems like you have plenty of room.
Jeez, I don't know about that, but then again the last time I R&R'ed a transmission it was a 3 speed manual from a '71 Dodge Dart! Maybe it's tougher nowadays to take out a tranny from a late model RWD car but years ago it wasn't.
I guess but I'd much rather work from the top rather than on my back.
LOL!
Do any of you all know is the stepper motor accessible on a 2009 Rogue .
