It's sad to see that we have such beautiful tourist locations here in Nigeria, but yet the Government doesn't maintain it. I mean look at a whole presidential lodge. Looking like one village cabin. Just imagine if the ranch was fully functional and well maintained. Thank you Tayo for bringing this to light, and showing us the potential of this beautiful place

This has nothing to do with the government Nigerians don't even visit this places but they can travel to Dubai and other countries for tourism, if people visited this places then the money can be used to maintain it. It won't work because there is no infrastructure to support the business. It needs private investors, but it also needs a functional airport, good roads, electricity, places to go for guests to access their money, an investment by Nigeria into its human capital. Places like Eko Atlantic may suffer the same fate as this because there will be no investment in the things that would make this sector viable.

This video was kind of a shock for me on a personal level because I and my family visited the ranch in its heyday every christmas holiday between 2006 and 2008 and I remember how incredible those trips were. We stayed in those villas and they were filled to the brim with people and life back then. We ate in that restaurant every morning We swam in the grotto pool. We saw the Cameroon-Nigeria border. We rode in those cable cars and we played in the waterpark at the bottom of the plateau. To see that it too succumbed to the poison of Nigerian leadership has really shocked me and almost brought me to tears. We also visited Tinapa. Back then the hotel and the studuo was still under construction but the shopping area was already built. The promise and the potential in Cross River were something that gave me a lot of hope. These were truly world class resorts and our leaders let that opportunity go to waste. What a shame.
Cross River State Governors are to be blamed for this decay at Obudu and Tinapa. What have the Governors been doing? Don't they realize that good income can be made from the projects? It's Just so embarrassing that educated people in government have now become lazy and daft because they prefer to pilfer than to produce good result!😠😡🤬

This place definitely needs someone to plant lots of the tallest trees in the world including fruit trees like mangoes, coconut etc. This would allow the area to remain green in the dry season and stop desertification. Tourists like being in areas with lots of swimming pools and bodies of water.

Privatizing these resorts will be way to go. Nigeria government is not a continuum, so, maintenance culture is not in their DNA. So sad to see this in this sorry state. This has got nothing to do with FGN but the State government. We're very quick to blame the FGN, whilst the State governments get away with murder. Most governors lack vision and creativity. So sad!
I was thinking this when realising that it appeared to be state owned.
A bunch of business owners can come together & resurrect this project, as I’ve read a lot of comments by people who have visited in the past & enjoyed their experience- meaning not only is there demand, but the model itself is successful.
I do wonder though how Tayo was able to visit. Is it still open to tourists then??
I'm American and I have heard of this place and looked it up a couple of times, so I'm glad your brought this place to light. I'm sure you illuminating the full potential of this place will help bring investors and builders.
I was there in 2013. It was lively, the cable cars were working. I also took the cable car to the top of the mountain.
It's the longest cable car ride in Africa. I visited Tinapa, Obudu and The Slave Trade Museum in Calabar. Really sad to see all these go down.

I honestly can't believe this. I recall going to the Cattle Ranch when it was working and the experience was out of this world. Letting this place fall apart like this is absolutely heartbreaking. You said it all, our politicians are not interested in any income that does not come from crude oil. Big shame to the state government and federal government on this one. However no surprise here.

It had it all to continue being a success for anyone traveling to Nigeria. Even for the people whom live there,they could have had great markets to sale things,jobs at the resorts .If the Government release it maybe let a great investor buy it maybe it can be saved.That is such a beautiful area nit just the resort and tourist would love going there.
Almost in tears watching this. I was in Obudu ranch and Tinapa severally between 2004 and 2007 for maintenance when Protea was running the ranch and different constructions were happening, it was a site to behold. Twice during my visits, the ranch was fully occupied by tourists from Europe. Dear Nigerians, this mindset of allowing rot needs to change, not just in government but also as a people. We need to have leaders who have the capacity and competencies to deliver good results.

Africa is the greatest country in the world with the youngest population, also the most resources. As a Caribbean person I feel I should defend Africa. That's where my roots came from, I can only identify with Africa not Europe, not US, but only Caribbean and Africa. Although, I love and respect the US because of the democratic freedom it offers to who are persecuted in many parts of the world.

I’m from Egypt, and I live in America, so I’ve been to Africa before but I’ve never travel any further south than Sudan, but I have always wanted to. On the other hand, this was heart-wrenching to watch. As someone who grew up in Calabar, Cross River, and knew about the glory of Obudu Cattle Ranch, you could cry about this.
Also, this shows what is crystal clear and what everybody already knows; bad, incompetent, and vision-less leadership is the bane of Nigeria's existence.

It breaks my heart to see Obudu and Tinapa in this state. I visited Obudu Cattle Ranch in 2012 and it felt like heaven. I visited every spot you mentioned and more, enjoyed the cable ride and the view was spectacular, but I must say that climbing the holy mountain was also the highlight of my tour to the ranch. Thank you so much Tayo for shinning a light on Obudu. And I will also like to appreciate your choice of songs, the melancholic songs got pondering. Let me not forget to mention that your team are amazing. This video is a masterpiece 🌹
Seeing this in its sorry state made me teared up, what a great potential to bring joy to people and bring revenue to the state/country. I wish I had money to buy this.

I also visited Obudu and tinapa in 2012. It’s sad seeing the current state.
I also visited in 2014 and it was so beautiful.took pics at the waterfall . I was shocked a place like that existed because it was never advertised .Seems like the black man is cursed, cursed with terrible leadership and low thinking skills. That's why black people are so disrespected the world over. a race of people that can't build or maintain their infrastructure and resources will never prosper.what a shame.
I remember doing the waterfall trip across the ranch with a friend some years back. My legs were gone by the time we came back. I literally crawled back home that night and my muscles were sore for weeks.
I used to spend Xmas on the ranch between 2009-2012. It was the place to be then. I had friends working there back then. I used to enjoy the freshest of cow milk and yoghurt from this place. The palm wine too is awesome 😁.
Cross Rover state went downhill right after DD left and it has never recovered. So sad to see awesome potential going to waste.
I lived in Cross river state for about 20 years and I had fond memories. But that place (Cross River as a whole) is shadow of that time and it's pathetic.
There's a certain part of the road that we call the "Devil's elbow". Scary place. Road is best enjoyed on a bike. That way you get to see a lot of nature. You can also see clouds forming below you when you go to a certain spot of the golf course.
There was this Xmas that Asa came to perform, then I had friends from all over to attend the concert. I was so tired that day that ended up not attending the concert 😔.
Oh...I forgot the fresh honey too 😔. Damn!
I visited this country but the level at which everyone is asking for something is incredible from immigration officers, boarding officer, visa agents, taxi trying to lengthen a trip that's short, guides.... And same going back I had to have so much money in loose change to give everyone. It was like Christmas ONLY I WASN'T THE SANTA😂🤣

It’s actually just disheartening and truly a shame to see such a beautiful resort with so many facilities fall into disrepair due to a lack of proper maintenance. This resort has the potential to be a hub of activity and a source of enjoyment for so many people, but without proper care, it's quickly becoming a ghost town. It's a reminder of the importance of investing not only in the initial construction, but also in the ongoing upkeep and maintenance of a property. Here's hoping that the resort can be revitalized and restored to its former glory.😢
I think this underlines the importance of security and strong economy. People aren't going to travel to Cross River if they might get kidnapped or ambushed on the way. Also, in a country where 85% of people are poor, this resort is unlikely to have high organic demand. And without people making the journey, there will be no money for maintenence.

Wow. This is so sad. I remember coming here for a family trip before my sister travelled out in 2009/2010. It was and still is the most beautiful place I had ever seen in Nigeria. The restaurant was exquisite. The canopy walk was scary for me at that time but crazy fun. And they had this yoghurt factory with the best yoghurt everrrrrrr. And we called that road snake road 😂 cause from the cable cars it looked like a snake. This is so sad but expected with the government we have.
I was in Obudu in ‘05 & ‘09 as a child and remember how beautiful an experience it was. It’s crazy seeing it this way but then unsurprising considering how the system doesn’t give much attention to tourism. I’d love to see it alive again.

I think you nailed it on the head when you mentioned the "maintenance problem" point. It's not just Nigeria. Suriname, same issue. How can politicians keep their own pockets fat if they care for projects that benefit others?

This is so sad. I visited Tinapa in 2013 through a school excursion. It was such a beautiful experience. I loved everything about it. They had a buffet service in their restaurants, it was so beautiful. My mum wanted us to go visit there as a family.
I even had Obudu cattle range on my list of places to visit. I came to know about it after my juniors in school went there for their own excursion. I find it hard to process this, like why. This is so heartbreaking. I really hope Nigeria as a whole can do better.

As an American viewer of the channel, it really makes me sad to see how little the government of Nigeria seems to care about tourism as personally, I would love to travel there someday. From what I've seen, it seems like such a beautiful country that would benefit immensely in the long term from a healthy tourism industry, and many people I know would gladly go for sights like the ones you showed in this video. Hopefully, one day, things will change for the better, and Nigeria will be able to attract visitors from all over. My personal, highly uneducated, and uninformed theory about all this is that the government doesn't want to have non resource based industries thrive because they wouldn't be able to steal as easily from them, but I'd love to hear anyone else's theory as to why the government seems unwilling to put in any effort.

I grew up in Calabar and remember the hype about the opening of Obudu cattle ranch and Tinapa. There was so much hope in the air. Really heart-breaking to see where it eventually landed. Very rare to watch such a rise and fall in a lifetime and this one was really short. I liked you talked about the lack of a maintenance culture in 9ja as a whole. The lesson for me here is that it takes more than a good leader. We had a good governor at that time who built this but without a culture in place to produce a succession of leaders from the top all to the bottom this is what happens. Hope we shall see places like this in 9ja rise again in our lifetime
This literally brought tears to my eyes. I am not even Nigerian but seeing how sad Tayo was because of lack of help to keep tourist places up and running by Nigerian government really made me pray for Nigeria. Tayo along with many other Nigerians just want better leaders to govern them and their country. Pray for better leaders. Pray for Nigeria.
Well, as always, it is private enterprises that should maintain tourism, not governments. The government isn't the better enterpreneur and should focus on a few key aeras, like justice, military and education and leave the rest to business. If this fails, it is their problem (and their money).

Then he lost power, or the favor ran out and so the thing waas abandoned.

Obudu Resort and Tinapa are owned by Cross River State (subnational government) and not the Federal Government of Nigeria 🇳🇬 (central government). The two Governors that succeeded the initiator were not interested in tourism hence, they allowed the facilities to rot away. Our prayer is for the incoming Governor who will assume office on 29/5/23 to do the needful.

Does anyone blame Joe Biden or the US government if some resort in Mississippi is not looked after properly? Nigeria has 36 states. Its political system is identical to the USA's. Every state has an elected government, governor, ministers and state house of reps etc. This resort in the video was a project of the Cross Rivers State government. So Tayo should stop smearing the entire country. Some states do a good job of maintaining their suff, and some states don't. So why is he saying ''The Nigerian government needs to ....'''? The resort has NOTHING to do with the Nigerian government. In fact the Nigerian government hasn't got the legal right to intervene in whatever is going on in that resort. So Tayo should be SPECIFIC and make this about the Cross Rivers State government not doing what they should do. This helps to foster accountability. Because when he just says 'Nigeria government'', that exculpates the real culprits, the Cross Rivers state govt.

I would like to see downhill mountain bike trails, hiking trails, weddings, restaurants, etc in a place like that. In the future a place like that should generate money. Africa is the future.
I visited this place 14yrs ago and I remember it like it was yesterday. The place was beautiful, and gave visitors an experience you don't get anywhere else. I'm from the islands so I know about the typical resorts. This resort was like no other. It breaks my heart to see it like this. I remember laying by the river, it was so surreal 😢. I always say that the world needs to know about this place.
I love how you documented this aspect to infrastructure and the reasons behind why a beautiful place like this has not been maintained. My mind keeps thinking of ideas to salvage this area, like community ownership of the space and creating gardens, a shared space and connection. 😊 But of course I do not know the practicality of people's situations or desires - easy for me to look from afar with enthusiasm! HA! I enjoy your videos and the people you have with you, and I love the laughter that you capture too - there is joy where you go, and I am there in some sense too! Have a great week! 😍

Oh my God! Is this what this magical spot I visited in 2004 looks like now? 😢😢When Donald Duke was there lots of tourists visited and I was one of them. The hair pin bends, the beauty of God’s majesty in the clouds when you stand on those mountains at sunrise were a sight to behold. Ah😢Great job as always Tayo. This is so sad. I remember when I was in college, a lot of departments organized field trips to this place and always talked about the beauty of this place when they got back from the trip.

I was here in 2013 ish. But this drone views is doing it for me. Nigeria has no maintenance culture sha cos this place is beautiful.
This resort is a gem, it is sad to see it in such a dilapidated state.
This is sooo sad. I sent a month at the ranch about 15 years ago, shooting a the second season of The Gulder Ultimate Search. It was sooo lovely. The service was amazing. It was being mangled by the Protea Hotels Group back then. Donald Duke had a great vision for the place, but subsequent governors brought their partisan nonsense to the state. The same thing happened to the TInapa project in then state. You should do a program on that too. There used to be an Obudu Mountain Race that attracted runners from all over the world. Tayo, no joke I am in tears watching this. One one my fondest memories was one night in Obudu when we all sat around in the cold sharing whiskey and talking as we stared at the moon. I used to love standing on the highest hills and watch the cloud/mist come in and obscure everything around you. We would have to call out to each other to know who was standing just 10 feet from you. I was so proud of the place and what they had achieved with it back then. I day cry, Tayo.
Africa has the potential to become a powerful global player, not just in tourism, but also due to its abundant natural resources. It's unclear why the region hasn't fully developed yet. Lack of education and people taking advantage of its resources for profit might be holding it back from reaching its full potential. 😢
I'm Kenyan and I visited the Idanre Hills about 30km outside Akure. Beautiful place but not maintenance staff. There was a monkey in chains, I hope they released that monkey 😭 I wish the government would do something about the heritage sites in Nigeria. I still loved it though.🇳🇬❤

Tayo you are fast becoming the king of story telling, this was delivered with class! We know how to build, we lack any sort of maintenance culture. When i fly thru the new airport terminal in Lagos i am filled with the thoughts of how the airport will look in the next couple of years. Already when i used it two weeks ago on my way to Accra, the lift was not working and i had to send my boxes up the escalator one after the other, it was as though nobody cared. God will not come down and help us, our generation must turn things around, the ones before us have failed. A good refurb and rebrand by one of the bigger hotel chains like Hilton can turn the fortunes of Obudu around.
A beautiful place that still has a ton of potential. If it was sold to the right company, I am sure it could be brought back to life. Fascinating video, thank you.

But to focus on the issue at hand, these kinds of videos (even seen from many miles away) is heart-wrenching. I will assume our Government does not care because there's nothing to gain directly in it for their pockets. You can raise capital for new projects and in turn overinflate budgets to loot but with existing maintenance costs, it's hard to siphon money or divert public funds via these means.
Hence, I doubt tourism will work in Nigeria.
Even if one administration has such intentions, the issue remains with what happens with the next and the next. Generally speaking, we don't have a sustainability or maintenance culture as Nigerians.
Hopefully, one day, we will get it right... I just don't know when that day will be.
