- Today we finally tried Ayam Percik here in Kelantan Malaysia and I'm in love.
We headed to a little Nasi Ulam near our hotel in Kota Bharu. Nasi Ulam is popular in Kelantan and this was our first time eating it!
I got Nasi Ulam with Ayam Percik and Alicia got Nasi Ulam with a fish. We also got sambal belacan, Budu and a mountain of fresh greens.
The food here was really good so fresh and the Ayam Percik is incredible I can't wait to eat this Kelantanese specialty more.
We also got some pretty delicious and interesting drinks too on the side aswell as some Kuih which is a traditional dessert here in Malaysia.
We love Malaysian food 🇲🇾

What a quarter chicken! Supposed to peel off the thin skin on the stinks beans right? 🌶️🌶️🌶️
You are the first English man that says yummy to every Malaysian cuisine😂😂😂😂😂
Ahah there's nothing we won't eat
To be exact. Delicious.
Englishman loving our range of nasi...😂! Very good! Wish i could join makan with you guys right now! Envy you guys!
Aha yes we love it all. Would love to share some food together! ❤️🇲🇾
You guys. I cant compliment you both enough at how natural you are at eating the local dishes and with hand, to boot!
A very good job as travellers in discovering hidden germs in Malaysia 🥰😍♥️
Thanks so much Aifaa we appreciate it 🙏
Hidden "germs" 💀
Ayam percik looks delicious. I missed that. I'm from Kota Bharu but now living in KL. Missed all Kelantanese food. Enjoy guys! ❤
Thanks Ana I bet you miss it! Can you get this sort of food in KL?
Yes we can but not as good as the one in Kota Bharu. 😊
@@analewis100 Hope you get to eat it again soon!
@@EllisWR Thanks....don't forget to look for Air Nira or Air Tuak 😊
@@EllisWR Air nira - palm nectar, is a sap extract from the various species of palm trees, usually in Malaysia from Coconut palm tree & Nypa/Nipah palm tree(mangrove palm)...
Ayam percik in Kelantan, you can't get anything better than that, yummy !😋😋😋
It was so so good
British guy eating ayam percik with ulam n sambal belacan 😁 👍 Percik sauce/gravy is so tasty, there is also "ikan bakar" with percik.sauce, you gonna love it 👌
Ahah we love the food here ❤️🇲🇾
You can always ask for gravy from the dishes on display to be put onto your white rice. They won't charge you for that. I myself like my rice with lots of gravy, and not plain white rice and do dip those ulam (vegetables) into budu or sambal belacan for added taste.
Hey thanks for that we still have lots to learn! It was delicious just with the Budu belacan and Percik sauce but next time gravy for sure!
@@EllisWR some malaysians love eating rice the wet kind, where they pour gravy till the rice is flooded. So, we call this type, kuah banjir. (Kuah = gravy, banjir=flood)
For me I’d like the percik gravy just enough, not over flow/flooded
Guys...i envy you..been a long time not visiting kelantan...love their foods
The food here is fantastic
Haven't had my lunch yet and it's already almost 4 pm and watching this made me drooling. You guys are not tourist but a true traveller. Kelantan food one of my favourite

high respects to you guys.. budu, sambal belacan plus the fresh veggies (ulam).. u can eat those without showing weird looking face...👍👍😁
Thanks we can eat anything the food here is incredible 🇲🇾
welcome to my hometown
Thanks so much 🙏
I believe there is another "nasi ulam" dish whereby the white rice will be mix with shredded selected herbs, pounded salted fish or fried anchovies , flesh of fresh grill fishes, budu, chillies, lemongrass, shallots, fried desiccated coconut, ginger, galangal and black pepper. You definitely have to taste that one too
We have to try that too yeah!
Hi Ellis and Alicia, The food looks delicious, kha 👌 Thank you for sharing 😊

Unbelievable isn't it
wow..i like ulam..all ulam are the best...including sambal belacan..nyam nyam..delicious..enjoy your food..❤😊
Delicious isn't it!
With all these great places to eat who would ever cook at home. Alicias fish looked so good. Eating like a local. Enjoy.
Exactly no need to ever cool Carol it's so good and affordable
That ikan bakar (grilled fish) is called Cincaru locally or scad in English. It is part of the mackerel family and has a characteristic leathery skin strip along the sides. All the food looks delicious; must get myself out to Kelantan soon as it has been some years now. Keep up with the local food videos!
Thanks yeah definitely make a trip!
Mantap lah pakcik nih 😎👍🏻

Thanks!
Total respect when foreigners can eat ulam and said it delicious when some of my friends didn’t 😂
Ahah we love everything
Now I'm hungry for that Ayam Percik, if any shop serve Grill Fish, there's always sauce that goes with the fish. Maybe there is near the sambal belacan area. Either is a black sweet soy sauce with onions and chillies or the red sauce which consist onions, chilies with tamarind juice. Both pack with ummami flavors.
Thanks for the tips 🙏
Ayam percik Kelantan sangat sedap 🇲🇾👍❤️🤤
Sangat sedap!
Nasi serati..must try
OK. Sir!
*Welcome to Malaysia truly Asia good food enjoyed - thanks sharing very good videos*
🇲🇾💗💖❤️🩹♥️🤩😍🥰💝🧡💖💗🇲🇾

It'll be tastier if you put some gravy on your rice. Looks a bit dry.
We have lots to learn ahah thankyou 🙏 the sambal and Budu made up for our mistake
You both are very good at eating with your hands.. not clumsy at all 👍😁

Thanks for recommending!
The complimentary dishes for budu is either ikan bakar (grill fish) or ikan singgang (fish soup) and ulam² .
Got it!
You should try the ayam percik at Yati Ayam Percik at Jalan Long Yunus
Looks delicious
You make me hungry bro 😅😅
Ahah cheers for watching
The Flash🤭
You should also try kueh seri muka. To me its the best kueh in Kelantan
Good recommendation 🙏
11:32 the green part is tapioca starch with pandan flavouring.
Petai is pretty expensive. It's not a farm produce, it's harvested from the thick jungle.
Thanks Anas!
👍 Cholop 👍♥️😻♥️
2:09 Those fresh green herbs, the real deal instead of multivitamin capsules...
You know it!
The shredded green manggo will be nice when you mix with budu and some grill/steam fish
Yeah it was delicious
miss you two❤
Back soon, ❤️
@@EllisWR come back to e-san local ok❤️
When I was a kid, I was always being reminded by my parent to finish my rice at dinning table😅😅😅
ahah i eat every last grain
Iam really hungry looking boths you eating Ellis WR. Sambal belacan and ayam percik is good for you👍👍👌👌👍. Budu is most famous in Kelantan and Terangganu. For your info.

@@EllisWR my pleasure . Please try more and more Malays traditional foods and kueh. Iam gurantee you love it.👌👌👍🥰
Ayam Percik 🤤😋 ... you can also ask for extra Percik sauce so you can use it as dipping sauce for the fish 😋🤤😋
Next time we did stay tuned it's so good
@@EllisWR 👍
UR partner seems like ULAMs very much... and she finished the PETAI... 👍👍👍😋😋😋
Yeah she loves it
She's cute, she's definitely a foodie, I saw many times she can't wait to dig in and had a few nibbles while Ellie is introducing the meals.
@@TeleeFONE ahaha yes we love food so much
Wow ....u sure know how to find a good spot..yup that kind of restaurant where we malaysian goes😂😂😂😂😂 not some fancy restaurant
Ahah yeah I see all these foreigners on TH-cam eating in air conditioned restaurants or malls what are they doing ahaha
This is malay food for sure with ulam and sambal belacan😀
Ask them jantung pisang rebus, pucuk ubi rebus, pegaga with sambal belacan and budu.
Thanks 🙏
You eat like a local kelantanese.. if you can eat petai.. then you are one... welcome to the eastern local malay recipes... seems you have open all of your taste buds.. congrats
Thanks Rohana we eat everything the flavours here are incredible. 🇲🇾
That kuih look not really fresh but still good. Homemade kuih is the best.. Love kelantan food btw
Would love to try homemade kuih
Damn, you guys handle east coast foods really well. Can try some Laksam next time, I forgot where's the best spot for it though.
Btw when you're eating with your hands, the way you're picking up the rice is good, but when you're bringing it to your mouth, try resting the fingertips on the left side of your lips, before using the thumb to push it in. Some rice soaked in the sauce might need more mushing before you pick it up.
Soon enough you'll find your own best way of eating with hands. Some even put a third of fingers inside the mouth before pushing the rice in lol
Laksam coming soon we asked some locals! Cheers for the tips I'm learning slowly
@@EllisWR Nice nice, I think I remember now that the one at Pasar Siti Khadijah is also a good spot, plus there you can try a lot of different food and products there, mainly fish products like the keropok, that varies from different fish used.
Go to Pulau Perhentian. It's just opposite the coast. Very nice for healing
Looks beautiful maybe.
@@EllisWR very beautiful. You shouldn't miss that. If you are lucky you can get a chance to swim with turtles
@@EllisWR Perhentian Island is the Maldives of Malaysia
Tips ... Please try to stir every drinks before you sip in....😘😘😘
Thanks so much 🙏
eat budu with ikan or daging singgang and ulam..that the perfect match
🇲🇾❤️
Almost none of our traditional desserts are super sweet, however in the east coast the traditional desserts are made sweeter more so than the rest of the country. If its super sweet like baklava its likely foreign with the exception of indian desserts. Malay or Chinese desserts are mild in sweetness.
Yes they are still delicious though 🇲🇾
The raw greens we call ulam goes with the budu
Cheers johan
สวัสดีคะ👍👍👍👍❤❤❤❤
Hey ❤️
You just pick what exactly how to eat grill dish..
Chicken or grills other meat.
Some vegetables without sauce
And ulaman ( all the raw vege ) dip it into budu, sambal belacan.
Last eat with hand is the best..😊😊😊😊
Yes the best way!
❤🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥💯
You remind of the vlogger Daily Max (US) .he loves spicy food and loves eating chillies 🌶 .
Max is a great guy cheers for watching 🙏
You mean Max McFarlin?
👍😋❤️
❤️
U had budu, sambal belacan, ulam, stink beans... u guys are next level.. 😂😂..The best thing bout malaysia is, each state in malaysia has its own local dish.. if u havent been to penang. U shud go..
Ahah I love it Mohd. Yeah Malaysia is food heaven
Nice haircut
Cheers!
Ulam is vege and beans plus sambal(belacan)
Thanks 🙏
👍👍👍👍👍
Hey shah how's it going
@@EllisWR being good..wish u guys well and keep exploring malaysian food .. the best in the world..😘😗
In Kelantan, the drinks tend to be on the extremely sweet side. Too sweet for us from the West Coast. You got to ask them to tone down on the sugar. They ranked number 1 in the diabetes chart. Seriously. No kidding.
Yeah they love it sweet here!
You didn’t finish your chicken!! LOL
That whole chicken leg, you can eat everything leaving behind 3 or 4 main hard bones. Chickens have soft bones, skin, abit of tendon, etc which have quite interesting texture and chewiness and crunch to eat
Ahaha I ate pretty much all I was stuffed. We gotta learn remember we come from a country where people eat bland chicken breast and nothing more :(
@@EllisWR Totally understand.
Have you tried Nasi Lemak with Ikan Kuning (Yellowstripe Scad Fish) which is pretty small fried fish?
That is the most basic and traditional Nasi Lemak, which is coconut rice (carbs) with fried peanut and anchovies (crunchy ingredient) and sambal (flavour), and cucumber (some kinda green) and fried Ikan Kuning (protein). You can eat the whole Ikan Kuning, unless it’s too hard to chew or swallow like fish or hard bones (the fish head and tail should be pretty crispy and it’s my favourite)
@@andresloft No that sounds so good though
🤤🤤🤤🤤😏
Hey bob
@@EllisWR Hi😊
Wow! Sgt sdp . I'm hungry now💦
Sangat sedap zaza!
ayam percik = Kelantan’s traditional barbecue chicken
It's so delicious
I think u can stay put in Kelantan/Terengganu for good
Sounds good to me 🇲🇾
u can speak kelantan if take budu always in ur dish😁
Love budu
You can ask the waiter for skyjuice
What's that?!
@@EllisWR Plain water 😂, or in malay air kosong
@@muhammadaizuddinnasir1915 ahaha could do with that cheers
geram dok tgk dia makan, 3 minggu baru habis sepinggan 😂
Pulut (sticky rice) I prefer with something spicy eg rendang, sambal and pulut serunding. Not sweet.
Both is great depending on mood!
The green & white kueh is called kueh serimuka. The other kueh, sorry, no idea.
Btway, whenever you have ayam percik, you can always ask for extra gravy
Yes good idea we learnt this next time you'll see! The gravy is incredible
I went to a boarding school in Kelantan for 2 years in the 90s. Once i overheard my Kelantanese friends reminiscing about "the original Ayam Perchik", ie. how it was made in the olden days.
The said, Ayam Percik used to be a wedding food and it was cooked inside a makeshift oven which was built by digging a hole in the earth, and the chicken would be placed inside the hole, and they'd cover the hole. They also mentioned about how it's supposed to be white in colour.
How much truth is in their conversation, I leave it up to you to investigate now that you're in Kelantan.
That sounds like heaven
👍🏿🥰👀🤤✌🏿
🙏❤️
What a bargain for a slap up meal like that.
Crazy isn't it
Actually, kelantanese are friendly, but most of them can't to speak English. That's why some of them, just silent..🤭😬 but, they're happy and welcome anybody to come here.
The people here are amazing 🇲🇾
I wouldn’t say all Kelantanese food matches my taste bud but Kelantanese ayam percik is the best in my opinion…btw, you should peel off the white skin of the stinky bean before eating it…anyway , enjoy Malaysia!
It's so delicious. Thanks for the advice!
Did u guys tried Celup Tepung?
It's on our list for when we return! When we actually have a bike or transport to go to try the best 🇲🇾🙏
Beware with spicy chili guys, its addicted . you always need chili even on the yogurt later hahahaha
Ahah Im addicted to spice can't help it
I reckon there should be a saying, "Once you have tasted Kelantanese food, there is no turning back." 😂
Ahahah I think you might be right you know
