Guatapé & La Piedra del Peñol | Medellín Day Trip

Today we take a day trip from Medellín Colombia to the BEAUTIFUL town of Guatapé. Guatapé is a lovely country area with a massive 60 million ton rock that you can climb up. And by climb, I mean you can walk up the 708 steps up to the top of this monolithic rock, La Piedra del Peñol, or El Peñón de Guatapé. There are stunning 360-degree views on the observation deck.
It took about 10 minutes for me to summit, but don't worry there are a few rest spots where you can sit to catch your breathe if you need some extra time. Once on top of El Peñón de Guatapé you can buy snacks, drinks, and even little trinkets. But this is one of the most ICONIC selfie and Instagram spots in all of Colombia, so the best thing to grab is a picture!
A short rickshaw ride away from La Piedra del Peñol is the actual town of Guatapé. Here you can get all kinds of food and treats. But this little town is so much more than just a rest stop. Every building has beautifully crafted artwork on the baseboards and walls. There are carved side panels that are all intricately painted as well. You can spend hours wandering the streets looking at all the vibrant colors and seeing the unique pieces on each wall.
If you come in the warmer months you can even swim and rent a boat to go out on the lake!
