- In this video, I wander around Gibraltar and meet the local people.
Gibraltar is a small British territory that borders southern Spain. It has belonged to Great Britain longer than the U.S. has been a country.
The locals are called "llanitos" and they speak a mixture of Spanish and English. This is one of the most bizarre, and yet fascinating places I've been to in a while. But the best thing? The people.

Even as a Brit we don't often see the detail of people living living their lives there. Just ten minutes of this video and it seems like a wonderful place with absolutely lovely people! Spanish chill and English sense of humour, what a great mix.
It would have been wonderful if the Armada had been successful then. You could have that great mix in the whole Britain nowadays 😊
This is the first video I've seen where someone interviews the Gibraltarians - absolutely fascinating!

Por cierto, parece que la población española original de Gibraltar abandonó en su mayoría el peñón tras la invasión inglesa. In that aspect it reminds me a lot of New Mexico we are a US state with the largest hispanic population percent wise and everybody mixes Spanish and English

@@dubmait Yes, because there isn't formal educations in "llanito" and Gibraltarians are being thought "proper English" and younger generations are influenced by American or British Television. Older folks grew up in a multilingual environment with local Spanish TV and education was in Spanish for some.

Right now I'm doing a presentation to school about the variations of the english language and I got kind of curious about Gibraltar, because of its location despite being a part of United Kingdom but man... This was way more interesting than I thought! Because I also learn spanish, it was unbelievably interesting for me to listen to these guys just change languages in the middle of sentence. Thank you so much for this video!
Gibraltar is only owned by the United Kingdom, it is not part of the United Kingdom that's why Gibraltarians do not have any member of the British parliament. Gibraltar is worth a visit, I went there 3 times, the last time I stayed there 3 nights. Education in Gibraltar used be in Spanish until 1939, when the World War II started, the British decided to replace Spanish with English. Only the younger generations can speak standard English properly, most Gibraltarians speak Gaditano Spanish mixed with English, Gaditano is the dialect from Cádiz region. The Gibraltarians are mix of Spaniards, Genoese, Maltese, British, Portuguese and Moroccan, their Llanito language was influenced by all these peoples that compose Gibraltar's society.

And no, you can’t really enjoy both Spanish and English, as the English (“British”) government is busy as a bee wiping out all traces of Spanish language from public life in this piece of Spanish land, first, by making English the sole official language of government, the sole medium of instruction in schools, and then, by having this already percolate down to the newer generations speaking no Spanish, or speaking it only as an optional, “foreign” language.

I had the genuine pleasure of going to Gibraltar in January 2017, on my flight to Gibraltar, I overheard one of the passengers (who was from Gibraltar) being asked a question that has been asked many times by those outside of Gibraltar to those from the Territory: "why aren't you Spanish?" It's a question, I'm sure, that many in Gibraltar are probably bored of being asked by now, certainly this particular person just rolled their eyes and said "because we feel British,"

Estoy haciendo mi tesis de Lingüística Hispánica sobre este lugar. He entrevistado a varios gibraltareños y son las personas más amables, tienen esa calidez española pero su sentido del humor británico. Es una rara combinación de dos culturas que alguna vez fueron "enemigos".

Los gibraltareños tienen la cultura, el clima, la amigabilidad y la gastronomía española. Y sólo tienen de inglés el sueldo. Normal que no quieran ser de ningún país, prefieren ser gibraltareños sin más, teniendo el sueldo alto de los ingleses y tooodo lo demás de los españoles. Son muy listos y afortunados.
Nos ha encantado el vídeo, somos un grupo de estudiantes, tenemos mucho interés en hacer un estudio sobre Gibraltar, Ceuta y Melilla. En caso de Gibraltar imagino que la ciudadanía en general se siente muy orgullosa en identificarse como gibraltareñ@s, pero no tanto como británicos, ya que lo que viven he dicho contexto es regido por Gran Bretaña pero la ciudadanía de Gibraltar y en su mayoría de familias mixtas se sienten muy orgullosas en pertenecer a dicha zona. Si alguien puede que haga un vídeo sobre este tema o encuestas en la calle, si no cualquier mensaje por aquí también sido de mucha ayuda, experiencias personales o familiares, amistades etc. En nuestro canal podrán ver muchas asignaturas de psicología y neurología impartidas por los mejores profesores de universidad a distancia, suscríbanse para recibir temas de actualidad y psicología general sanitaria más actualizada.

Found out last year that my great great grandmother was Gibraltarian. Hope to visit one day. Glad to see no hostility between them and the Spanish ❤️ Not always spun that way here in the UK
I'm from Miami (where we have a lot of Cubans, Puerto Ricans and Dominicans whose ancestors came from Andalusia and Canary Islands). To hear this accent (in Spanish) which feels so close to me juxtaposed with a British accent which feels very far from me within a single person is very interesting.
Its incredible to know that a large population fluently speak English and Spanish in Europe. I relate so heavily to it because both of my parents are Mexican immigrants

First, Gibraltarians are not a large population. Second, most people there do NOT speak Spanish fluently anymore - those who do are mostly in the over 60 crowd. The newer generations have been educated strictly in English and many of them speak little to no Spanish worth mentioning. Where you do hear Spanish from the locals, I wouldn’t categorise it as “fluent”, even for most of the middle aged people. The British are intent on wiping out the native Spanish legacy.
@@andros1000 I agree, but then the fluency may vary, only a few speak standard Spanish, what is mostly spoken is Gaditano dialect of Spanish, and then quite mixed with English. Any Spanish fluency they may have is also mostly spoken, not written.

Calidad de vida no es sólo clima y comida. Es también oportunidades laborales dignas y estabilidad económica. Lo siento pero viviendo en Escocia y no habiéndome faltado trabajo desde que llegué no vuelvo a España más que de vacaciones (por cierto que no sea verano que no hay quien lo soporte en España).

Es muy sorprendente ver como el acento de los Giberteños es muy similar al accento de Puerto Rico y Cuba..
Su acento es puro Andaluz, prácticamente indistinguible del Gaditano de Cádiz, porque naturalmente y geográficamente son parte de Andalucía, digan lo que digan los políticos. No tiene ninguna relación con cualquier Español Caribeño. Si bien es cierto, que el Andaluz es el español que más se extendió por Latino América, y que por ende mas semejanzas guarda

In Miami we speak Spanglish. Similar but with different accents.
Spanglish. I think the language has a future. Knowing that it exists, when I'm talking to someone in Spanish here in N America, I feel free to use an English word if I don't know the word in Spanish. I assume that maybe the guy I'm talking to knows the English word, but if he doesn't, then we settle on a word that he does know. Is this Spanglish? Don't know, but Spanglish probably happens along these lines, an effort to communicate and not worry about being graded on what we say or how we say it...
@groussac Yes, Spanglish is all you described and more. Example, to print is literally "imprimir" in Spanish but in Miami and other hispanic enclaves it becomes "printear". To schedule becomes "schedulear" and you no longer have a "cita" but an an appointment, or you are busy instead of "ocupado". Then the opposite takes place as well, get out of the car becomes get down from the car because that is how you say it in Spanish but now you adapt it to English. It is a creative mess.
@@jorgecereceda2995 Too bad if the Royal Academy doesn't like it. Not much they can do about it. Changing subject, do you think Google Translate is getting more accurate when translating English Spanish? Seems that way to me, working with it over the past 5 years or so. Of course you have to kind of know both languages to really use it. A simple thing like 'you', for example, and GT is at a loss. Could be tu or vos or vosotros/vosotras or usted/ustedes or simply left out altogether.

Nos ha encantado el vídeo, somos un grupo de estudiantes, tenemos mucho interés en hacer un estudio sobre Gibraltar, Ceuta y Melilla. En caso de Gibraltar imagino que la ciudadanía en general se siente muy orgullosa en identificarse como gibraltareñ@s, pero no tanto como británicos, ya que lo que viven he dicho contexto es regido por Gran Bretaña pero la ciudadanía de Gibraltar y en su mayoría de familias mixtas se sienten muy orgullosas en pertenecer a dicha zona.
