Eric, nice cover. I'll always remember this song. On March 5, 1977 my (pregnant) wife & I went to Ratso's (a dinner/music club) in Chicago. Aliotta Haynes & Jeremiah were the act that night and, of course they played/sang Lake Shore Drive. The following day my wife gave birth to my son. Hard to believe that it's nearly 42 years ago.
Hey thanks Miguel. Maybe the left hand sounds more complicated than it really is. I'm mainly just breaking up octaves in the left hand. Sort of boogie-style. Gives it a bit more of a walking bassline feel.

My son loves the Galaxy movies and this song has risen to the top as one of favorites. Watching you play has him sitting at the piano trying to learn this....
Well done! Brings up a lot of memories. I was 23 the first time I drove south on LSD headin' into town-and I did it countless times over the next 55 years and counting. The only difference is the reasons for those trips. It my youth it was for.... well, you can guess. The reasons gradually changed over time and now... well, it's more likely to be for a doctor's appointment. I remember when LSD had 3 curbs in the middle of it which could be raised and lowered. During morning rush hour, one of the curbs would rise to give incoming traffic an extra lane. After rush hour the center curb would rise; then in the late afternoon the center one would lower and the third one would rise to allow for an extra lane going the other direction during evening rush hour. Eventually they did away with the rising and lowering curbs and in some areas put up a decorative center barrier. But the biggest change over time has been the spectacular landscaping along the way-flowers, grasses, trees.... When I'm touring visitors around, I point out a few of the trees that I purchased for the city. I can't honestly swear I know exactly which particular ones, but I know my property taxes paid for quite a few of them.
Thank you for sharing that! Those curbs must've been before my time. I lived along Lake Shore Drive for about 4 years (2017-2021), a few years after recording this video. I could look out my apartment window on Stratford and see the cars and motorcycles whizzing by, past Belmont Harbor, and hear the hum of traffic through my open window in the summertime. Now I'm back on the northwest side of the city, where I'm originally from. Still love everything about that drive though! Glad you enjoyed the song, and cheers from a fellow Chicagoan.
This is brilliant. Expect more views, by the way. This song has always been great, but it's just reached a wider audience (or will when the film comes out in the US) because it was in Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2.
Thanks a lot! Is that right? I had no idea it was in that soundtrack. I've been playing this song for years, because I loved it since I was a kid. I think the reason this video got as many views as it has so far is because no piano sheet music exists for this song as of yet, and maybe people want to see how it's played.
Sadly, I'm not able to write out the sheet music. I would probably need sheet-music writing software for that anyway, and I don't have any of that. I play the rhythms and licks slightly differently each time. For me it's a matter of knowing the basic chords that make up the verses and the choruses, and then playing them over and over in different variations, that sound to me like how the original recording sounded.
I've loved it for a long time, too. I just got back tonight from watching the movie tonight and that reminded me that I've always wanted to play it and -- as you say, the lack of sheet music brought me here. ;0)
Hahaha. Called it! Well, I feel your pain, friend. I was super disappointed to find no sheet music online too, which is why I just learned it from the guitar chords online. For the record, the song is in E major, if you know how to build it out from there. If you comb through the comments here, you'll find a link I sent someone for the entire chart of the chords, which exist online for guitar players. That's what I used to learn this.
Thanks! This isn't the sheet music to my cover (since I learned by ear, I don't have sheets for it). But this is the official sheet music for the song, from the original recording: musescore.com/user/20600931/scores/4062001
