The Beatles thought Pet Sounds was epic and inspiring. Brian Wilson is a genius. Great song writer, absolutely the gold standard of producers. Not one of those guys in the band ever put a toe on a surf board, or spent time hanging at the beach. The Beach Boys sang the best harmonies (arranged by Brian) in the business. They held their own on the charts while we had the mind blowing British invasion. Also, something to remember, we had ONE genre back in the 60's and early days of the 70's. Genre didn't come into play until FM was widely accessible. Most people had 1 or 2 rock and roll stations and everything that your parents didn't want to listen to was rock and roll. The Beach Boys, Rolling Stones, The Supremes, The Temptations, Elvis, even Barbra Streisand crossed over at times. So when you are struggling to fit the music of the 60's and 70's into a genre, just remember, we had 1 genre, rock and roll. It can be painful at times watching reactors try to shrink down a track and try to make it fit in a box that wasn't even in play at that time. Our genres at the time were Gospel, Country, Blues, Classical, Big Band, and Rock And Roll. That's how music was sorted back then, there were a few sub genre's, but they were pretty fluid. We were very educated in music because we were exposed to so many sounds under the rock and roll umbrella. We were also a concert culture generation. Everyone I knew growing up went to a concert at least twice a month. We saw so many bands it was crazy. I love watching y'all a lot. Keep up the good work!
"I don't know where but she sends me there." I love that line. Such a great song. This album, "Pet Sounds" was the Beach Boys' answer to the Beatles album "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band", which kicked EVERYONE in the ass when it came out. This song is specifically what Brian Wilson wrote when he, like many other artists, was set free by "A Day in the Life", and hearing how far they could go past the long-held traditions of songwriting. Songs could be like concertos or symphonies, with movements and orchestration and all kinds of oddness! YAY WE'RE FREE!!! It was quite a time, musically. :) Also, the Beach Boys did cover "California Dreaming", but not until about 10 years ago. You'd think they'd have done it long before, but they held off. It was originally a Mamas and Papas song. And "Wipeout" was not the Beach Boys, but the Surfaris (yes, really).
The acic dropping hippy Beach Boys of the late 60s and early 70s is my favorite style of Beach Boys. B.B. did not do California Dreaming, also Paul and John of the Beatles said Pet Sounds (B.B.) at the time was the greatest pop masterpiece they had heard. It spawned a battle between those two bands to out do each other SONICLY.
You should check out the movie they made about Brian Wilson's life, with Paul Dano as the younger and John Cusack as the older: Love and Mercy. Great film. It covers the creation of this album, which most of the band and the label didn't like but has become perhaps their magnum opus. Carl Wilson was one of the best vocalists of all time. Other Beach Boys songs: "Little Surfer Girl," "In My Room," "Surfin' Safari," "Help Me Rhonda," "Little Deuce Coupe," "Fun, Fun, Fun," "God Only Knows," "Sloop John B," "I Get Around," "Catch A Wave," "Wouldn't It Be Nice," "Don't Worry Baby," "Barbar(a) Ann," "California Girls," and "Little Saint Nick." "Wipe Out" was covered by the Boys, but originally by The Surfaris. Ditto "California Dreamin'," but that was The Mamas and the Papas.
Got to listen to them from a hotel balcony, across the street from the state fair, way back when...parents were partying at the show. Wore out Greatest Hits, 1 & 2, on cassette tape, growing up in the 80's... Thanks for the memories...
Think y'all should like it. It's from the album Pet Sounds which was a big turn from their poppy surf music. Brian was getting heavy in the ganja thanks to meeting Bob Dylan and the result was the sonic tapestry known as "Pet Sounds"
Per wikipedia, the Beach Boys did do a cover of California Dreamin'... in 1986, long after they'd faded from chart prominence. Good Vibrations was released as a single and was supposed to appear on the follow-up to Pet Sounds called Smile, but that album ended up being a production hell and was released in a cut down form called Smiley Smile. A more true to the text version of Smile was eventually released called The Smile Sessions, and the opening track, Heroes and Villains (sometimes titled Our Prayer/Gee/H&V due to having an extended intro), is an excellent example of how Brian Wilson was trying to innovate songwriting and recording.
Wipeout was originally by The Surfaris and also made famous (like within a year or 2) by The Ventures. The only version of Wipeout that The Beach Boys did was with The Fat Boys.
Charles Manson was mad at Dennis Wilson for taking one of his songs and turning it into "Never Learned Not To Love, " released in 1969 which is actually quite good. Dennis got music producer Terry Melcher (son of Doris Day and a producer of The Byrds) to audition a couple of Manson's songs, but in Manson's view, Melcher reneged on his promise to produce his songs. Not coincidentally, Sharon Tate and four others were brutally murdered in the house owned by Melcher.
Brian Wilson is a genius, he could hear all the words, music and harmonies in his head when he wrote...his father was their manager and was a real prick. He hit Brian across the head once and left him deaf in one ear. Later he sold the rights to all of their music behind their backs and took great pleasure in telling Brian who was devastated. Brian most definitely is on the spectrum and found touring very difficult and stopped for a long time. He took the tragic death of his brother Dennis, who was the one who knew Manson, really hard and never really got over it. He met a girl while he was out one day and then was basically held prisoner in his home by his 'psychiatrist' who had him on massive amounts of pills. He ended up being rescued by the girl who snuck into his house and his maid showed her all the pills the guy had him on and she contacted his brothers to come and help him. As far as I know they're still a couple. Oh and the psychiatrist wasn't even one and was just basically ripping him off.
Fellas!!! THIS was the era that The Beach Boys were inspiring and competing with the freeking Beatles...Pet Sounds INSPIRED the Beatles to do Sgt Pepper...it's a fascinating story about their back and forth
I can attest that as a big metal fan myself, I’ve always had a soft spot for The Beach Boys. IMO, there’s nothing wrong with appreciating different genres of music especially from different eras.
the group recorded “Never Learn Not to Love,” on the b-side of their “Bluebirds Over the Mountain” single. the song was once known as “Cease to Exist,” and was originally penned by Charles Manson.
One of the best produced songs ever. Incidentally, "California Dreamin'" was written by John Phillips about his wife Michelle Phillips reaction to living in New York, and it was recorded by The Mamas and Papas.
lol California Dreaming is from the Mama's and The Papa's, They have covered Wipeout, The Champs made that song popular. I was probably in my mom's womb the first time I heard the Beach Boys. My mom was a big fan, I grew up listening to 50's and 60's rock n roll.
9:17 they didn't name themselves the Beach Boys. They were named the Pendletones (a play on the Pendleton shirts that were popular within SoCal beach culture at the time). When they recorded their first single "Surfin'", the management of Candix Records printed the labels as the Beach Boys unbeknownst to the band members - they didn't know until they actually saw the records, by then it was set in stone.
Back in the sixties these guys were often referred to as The American Beatles, they were great. Probably the most underrated and under appreciated band in history. The Beatles loved them and became good friends with them. That's the only stamp of approval I need. The Beatles Loved these guys! Peace ❤
Their early music was more of the "Surf Rock" that you're speaking about. "Surfin USA" was their breakout hit, "California Girls" was another. Some of my favorites in that genre that I think you would enjoy are: "I Get Around" and "Fun Fun Fun". I totally love "Don't Worry Baby" and "Darlin'". Good Vibrations was when they were growing out of the surf phase, a little more psychedelic, and Kokoma wasn't until the 80's. Sloop John B was an old Bahaman folk song but their version is super cool.
California Dreamin definitely a mamas and papas tune. Great tune. Check out dream a little dream covered by the mamas and the papas, cool underrated band
I was a schoolgirl when this came out. I first heard it on the radio as I was leaving for school and I just could not turn it off - missed the bus and got into terrible trouble but it was worth it. I was blown away! Couldn't stop talking about it when I got to school.
Yes they also covered 'California dreaming' in 1986. Mama's & Papa's did it in 1965. LOL I grew up on these guys. They had tons of this 'summer fun' kind of music. It had its own vibe, although, they could do more serious stuff too. 'In my room' is a great example of that. They were all great, but Brian Wilson was the genius behind the group. A little trivia for ya ~ Brian's daughter Carny Wilson sings great too & was in the duo 'Wilson Philips'. The Phillips gal was Chynna Phillips, daughter of Michelle & John Philips (from the Mama's & Papa's).
Some Beach Boys songs: About girls: Surfer Girl, Help Me Rhonda About cars: Little Deuce Coupe, Shut Down, Little Honda (about a motorcyle) About surfing: Surfing USA, Catch a Wave, Surfin' (their very first hit) About other things: Dance Dance Dance, In My Room, Don't Worry Baby, God Only Knows (Paul McCartney's all time favorite songs) Fun, Fun, Fun, Sloop John B, Be True to Your School
Pet Sounds and Smile are two absolute museum quality masterpieces! Another testament to the ability of humans and what the mind can create. Brian Wilson is one of the greatest musical minds we’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing 🫶🏻
You might be thinking of "California Girls" by the Beach Boys. To my knowledge, they never covered "California Dreaming" But they and The Mamas and the Papas definitely rock those incredible harmonies and were big around the same time. Actually, the 80s group Wilson Phillips is made up of daughters of members of the Beach Boys and Mamas and the Papas. So they do have that one link.
Perhaps your best presentation. Really enjoyed your conversation about the old lady in the wheelchair and the old jukebox. “California Dreaming” was a Mamas & Papas original hit, however it was covered by virtually everybody including “America” and the “Beach Boys.” Again, enjoyed listening to your musical education/journey. Stay on the train and listen and learn.
Dig that theramin! It sounds like you might be getting "California Girls" mixed up with "California Dreamin'". The Beach Boys peaked in the mid-sixties, but their music could still be heard everywhere you went in California in the seventies. They recorded dozens of classic songs about girls and cars and surfing, filled with catchy hooks and wonderful harmonies. And you've only begun to scratch the surface of their music so far. When you're ready for more from them check out "Don't Worry Baby" (1964), "Wouldn't It Be Nice" (1966), "I Get Around" (1964), "Help Me, Rhonda" (1965), "Surf City" (1963), "Catch a Wave" (1963), "Fun, Fun, Fun" (1964)... And for instrumental surf rock, check out classics like "Walk, Don't Run" by The Ventures (1960), "Pipeline" by The Chantays (1962), "Miserlou" by Dick Dale (1962), "Wipe Out" by The Surfaris (1963), "Surf Rider" by The Lively Ones (1963) and dozens more. The Ventures took their sound to the next level in 1964 with "Exploration In Terror", "Fear", and "He Never Came Back". Twilight Zone stuff there. Trippy.
Lifelong fan of the Beach Boys. All teasing aside, their harmonies are the finest. I highly suggest, God only knows and Oh, Caroline. Excellent reaction. Keep up the great work!
Their songs are NOT just about surfing....they are also about cars, and racing and school, and relationships, and being a young person in Southern California and the activities and feelings that they go through. "California Dreamin'" was The Momas And The Popas....only!
I wanna thank my grandmother for introducing me to the beach boys and all the other artists from the 50s and 60s and my mother got me listening to kiss and black sabbath so I thank them making me into the metal head that I am today so thank you for reaction to this group ✌️🤘🤘
Hey guy----don't forget, they did a lot of car songs. My Dad was their high school PE teacher and Football coach. Brian Wilson was his QB. They had some great concerts. Rock on, from LA
The story is The Rolling Stones were getting ready to go on their first big tour when they went into a pub where this song - which had just dropped - was playing on the jukebox. They listened in stunned silence, and were so impressed they jokingly considered throwing in the towel and giving up their musical career.
This song and "Surf's Up" are probably the height of their artistic expression. But since the 2011 release of "The Smile Sessions" there're arguments about which version of "Surf's Up"
Great reaction guys!! Such a vibe of a song (pun intended). The Beatles definitely took part of their sound, especially the harmonies, from The Beach Boys, as with The Everly Brothers! Imitation is the highest form of flattery. The sounds on this track are still as groovy as when they came out. Highly suggest the song Don't Worry Baby as the next Beach Boys reaction! Cheers!
The Beach Boys were technically considered surf music, but Brian Wilson carved out a different niche for their group (and a few impersonator type bands made soundalike music), but if you really want to try surf rock, check out: Dick Dale and the Dell Tones (Miserlou is his most famous, thanks to the Pulp Fiction soundtrack), the Surfaris (Wipeout), The Shadows (Apache), the Ventures (Walk Don't Run), or the Bel-Airs (Mr. Moto).
Also....California Dreaming, The Mama's And The Papa's. And the beach music was a niche that Brian Wilson saw and filled. None of those guys were surfers, but they knew surfers and listened to how passionate surfers were about their sport. Brian started writing and arranging filling that void. He was a very smart guy that recognized a hole in the market and filled it. Unfortunately, The Beach Boys were stuck in that music because they were good at it. The industry wouldn't let them do anything else. Wipeout wasn't one of theirs, BTW. If you ever listen to the Beach Boys again, listen to the harmonies, they are exquisite.
The Beach Boys are most notably recognized for the beach/surf pop/rock genre you mentioned, but some of their later material, specifically "Sail On, Sailor" really broke out of that box. That song in particular is stunning, out of character and a worthwhile listen. You will be very surprised.

Also, the Beach Boys did cover "California Dreaming", but not until about 10 years ago. You'd think they'd have done it long before, but they held off. It was originally a Mamas and Papas song. And "Wipeout" was not the Beach Boys, but the Surfaris (yes, really).
Pet Sounds came out almost exactly a year before Sgt Pepper
@@mikei70 and was very explicitly a huge influence on Sgt. Pepper.
There were few people writing music like this at the time. The sonic choices, arrangements and instruments used were so creative.
I saw them in 85. They were still killing it.
Other Beach Boys songs:
"Little Surfer Girl," "In My Room," "Surfin' Safari," "Help Me Rhonda," "Little Deuce Coupe," "Fun, Fun, Fun," "God Only Knows," "Sloop John B," "I Get Around," "Catch A Wave," "Wouldn't It Be Nice," "Don't Worry Baby," "Barbar(a) Ann," "California Girls," and "Little Saint Nick."
"Wipe Out" was covered by the Boys, but originally by The Surfaris.
In the '60s, it was the southern cal vibe for teens nationwide. The beach, girls and cars. The Beach Boys personified that image and sound.
They were more than a niche. They were one of the most popular bands. Its all you heard on the radio for a long time.
The drummer Dennis Wilson was involved with Charles Manson.
Think y'all should like it. It's from the album Pet Sounds which was a big turn from their poppy surf music. Brian was getting heavy in the ganja thanks to meeting Bob Dylan and the result was the sonic tapestry known as "Pet Sounds"
'67s Smiley Smile actually, not Pet Sounds
Pipeline by The Chantays. Talk about cool Surf Rock.
It was all one genre to us. That was rock ‘n’ roll baby. The Beach Boys music was fun music. 🎶
Listen to the album "Pet Sounds" it's unbelievable...always makes Rolling Stone magazine's top 3 rock albums in history...
California Dreamin' is Mamas and Papas
I can attest that as a big metal fan myself, I’ve always had a soft spot for The Beach Boys. IMO, there’s nothing wrong with appreciating different genres of music especially from different eras.
Same here. I've been a metal head since the early '80s and I love the Beach Boys.
Blind Guardian's version of 'Surfin' USA'
best of both worlds. 😉😁🍻
They did cover The Mammas and the Pappas " California Dreaming"
i love the Beach Boys harmony. Check out "In My Room", "God Only Knows", or "Wouldn't It Be Nice"
the group recorded “Never Learn Not to Love,” on the b-side of their “Bluebirds Over the Mountain” single. the song was once known as “Cease to Exist,” and was originally penned by Charles Manson.
The Beach Boys are fantastic. This song and God Only Knows are my favorite tracks from them.
You can listen to the dark side of Brian Wilson on the songs ‘Til I Die or Surf’s Up. I sing along with Paul McCartney and I cry with Brian.
Back in the sixties these guys were often referred to as The American Beatles, they were great. Probably the most underrated and under appreciated band in history.
The Beatles loved them and became good friends with them. That's the only stamp of approval I need. The Beatles Loved these guys!
Peace ❤
When Paul McCarty heard the Album Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys he said he realized he and the Beatles had to step up their game.
This song is pure summer vibes
My first concert was in the mid 70s when I was around 10. Beach Boys and Chicago
ps---the song Wipeout was sung by the Surfaris. California dreamin was The Mamas & the Papas.
Those were the best times for music. So glad I was born when I was. 71 now.
The Beatles heard Pet sounds and they freaked outabout how good it was
I was a schoolgirl when this came out. I first heard it on the radio as I was leaving for school and I just could not turn it off - missed the bus and got into terrible trouble but it was worth it. I was blown away! Couldn't stop talking about it when I got to school.
Cali Dreaming was Mamas and Papas.
The beach boys are very well respected. Pet sounds is considered one of the greatest albums of all time.
Some Beach Boys songs:
About girls: Surfer Girl, Help Me Rhonda
About cars: Little Deuce Coupe, Shut Down, Little Honda (about a motorcyle)
About surfing: Surfing USA, Catch a Wave, Surfin' (their very first hit)
About other things: Dance Dance Dance, In My Room, Don't Worry Baby, God Only Knows (Paul McCartney's all time favorite songs)
Fun, Fun, Fun, Sloop John B, Be True to Your School
Pet Sounds and Smile are two absolute museum quality masterpieces! Another testament to the ability of humans and what the mind can create. Brian Wilson is one of the greatest musical minds we’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing 🫶🏻
Pipeline with SRV and Dick Dale is surf rock everyone can get into!
Lovvveeeeee The Beach Boys!!
There was a music genre in the '60's called "The California Sound" and they, as well as the Mamas and Papas, were from CA.
This song and the album Pet Sounds also blew Paul McCartney's mind, so he went back to the other Beatles and they made Sargent Pepper's.
This one, 'California Girls', 'In My Room' and 'Feel Flows' are my top faves by these guys.
Trippy.
Got to meet several of them back in the 80s at a benefit gig. Mike, Bruce, and AL. They were pretty cool.
Simply one of the greatest pop songs ever written, produced, and recorded.
Lifelong fan of the Beach Boys. All teasing aside, their harmonies are the finest. I highly suggest, God only knows and Oh, Caroline. Excellent reaction. Keep up the great work!
They used to play frequently at Lagoon Amusement Park here in Utah... Ahhhhh!... The memories!
"Surf's Up" is a great album. "Pet Sounds" is great album.
Their songs are NOT just about surfing....they are also about cars, and racing and school, and relationships, and being a young person in Southern California and the activities and feelings that they go through.
"California Dreamin'" was The Momas And The Popas....only!
the Mamas & the Papas lived in the same area (Laurel Canyon) as Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys
Cheers!
The Beach Boys were technically considered surf music, but Brian Wilson carved out a different niche for their group (and a few impersonator type bands made soundalike music), but if you really want to try surf rock, check out:
Dick Dale and the Dell Tones (Miserlou is his most famous, thanks to the Pulp Fiction soundtrack), the Surfaris (Wipeout), The Shadows (Apache), the Ventures (Walk Don't Run), or the Bel-Airs (Mr.
This was the origin of the term "good vibrations" and over time it has been shortened to "vibe" , PJ
The Beach Boys did indeed do a cover of California Dreaming. Released in the eighties.
The Beach Boys are most notably recognized for the beach/surf pop/rock genre you mentioned, but some of their later material, specifically "Sail On, Sailor" really broke out of that box. That song in particular is stunning, out of character and a worthwhile listen. You will be very surprised.
