IIRC McCartney was blown away by God Only Knows and wanted to write something that might come close to it and I think the result may have been Here, There and Everywhere. But I may be mistaken.
It was specifically the US (Capitol) release of Rubber Soul, which has some songs taken out and some some songs from Help! put in. Those removed songs from Rubber Soul, a few songs from Help!, and a few from Revolver then made up the "Yesterday and Today" compilation album. I personally think the US release of Rubber Soul flows slightly better than the UK version and how it specifically influenced Pet Sounds.
The backing instruments were mostly done by a group of studio musicians called the Wrecking Crew, produced by Brian Wilson, while the rest of the Beach Boys were on tour. You should look into the Wrecking Crew -- they played on so much good $h!t

The Beach Boys are a lot more complex than they get credit for, even their early stuff. Brian Wilson arranged their vocals and instruments, and he was influenced by jazz vocal groups. He wrote lyrics occasionally but usually used other lyricists, including Mike Love. The lyrics for this album were written by Tony Asher, who was influenced by his conversations with Brian. At ages 23 and 24, they were being honest about their experiences, and it's no wonder you could relate. There are gems on all of the Beach Boys albums where Brian was involved (he wasn't involved at times when his mental illness didn't allow it), if only because Brian is so talented that he'll always throw something unexpected in the arrangement. There's no one else like him. Also, he has had depression from a young age, and their music gets a lot more melancholy than people realize. Even early stuff like The Lonely Sea is incredibly sad. Then you have 'Til I Die, from a 1971 album called Surf's Up. Very, very sad. But a beautiful song. You should react to "The Beach Boys Today," from 1965. Its sound hints at where Brian would be going with Pet Sounds. Interesting that you said this music is therapy, because that's how Brian views it too.
Pet Sounds is the most heartfelt, introspective piece of music out there. Brian Wilson's brilliant harmonies and arrangements, Tony Asher's lyrics and the Boys' voices make for a purely sublime album. Seeing it being exposed to new audiences makes me smile ear to ear

3 brothers, the Wilsons; 1 cousin, Mike Love; and childhood friend Al Jardine. Brian is the undisputed GENIUS. This album is legend for its studio production. And Beach Boys' harmonies are unmatched.
Man I’m so glad you checked this out. Literally every single one of their albums in a row from this point to the early 70s are SO good and are highly worth a listen!
The Beach Boys were so far ahead of their time. They inspired groups that became *known* for Psychedelic Rock, like Pink Floyd, The Who, and post-pop Beatles. You should definitely check out "Good Vibrations." It's epic, and a whole journey.
I think Brian Wilson would dig your reaction. Btw, he never surfed! Not once! He's scared of the ocean. He had a lot more in common with you than you think! He had had a nervous breakdown and a lot of rough times before he came up with this. Brian, Dennis and Carl Wilson were brothers and Mike Love was their first cousin. The other three were unrelated. There are a variety of drummers on the album but the main one is Hal Blaine, King of All Drummers. In this period (1965-1967) Brian was using the Wrecking Crew studio musicians in Los Angeles, and Hal was the best drummer in L.A. However, the Beach Boys also play instruments on the album, and they did ALL the vocals. The lyricist on this album -- but NO other Beach Boys albums -- was mostly a guy named Tony Asher, who never wrote lyrics for anything else, but he was basically working from Brian Wilson's ideas. Brian wrote all the music by himself. The one song that isn't original is Sloop John B, which was based on a black folk song from the Bahamas. God Only Knows is Paul McCartney's favorite song. This whole album is the one that inspired the Beatles to make Sgt. Pepper. @lifeofdariius: The only Beach Boys album that sounds at all like this one is the earlier BEACH BOYS TODAY, which is fantastic too, but it's actually three albums earlier. You should definitely check that one out . The one right before this, PARTY, couldn't be more different (it's like being at a party) but I love it too. They do a lot of old r&b covers, a couple of Beatles songs. In addition to the earlier > BEACH BOYS TODAY, I recommend the later > SUNFLOWER, on which all the members wrote songs. I mean there are a lot of good albums, but those are especially cool. And if you just want to escape, go to > BEACH BOYS PARTY, which is not a real party, but FEELS like a party. The other thing is that, before this album, they were really a singles band. So for the early Beach Boys, you could do something like MADE IN CALIFORNIA, a compilation that's like Past Masters but it's just one banger after another after another . #lifeofdariius
Darius love this video. What you said about I just wasn’t made for these times made me feel why making music is important. 26 years old and these times and the fact stuff like this and Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On haven’t aged a day is a testament to how little we Americans have done to address injustice in the world. The way the music hits on “Sometimes I feel very sad.” Come on
You don’t even know how excited we are with anticipation for watching this. I suspect not all will resonate with you immediately, if ever. But a handful of these are going to BLOW YOU AWAY. Ok, gonna go get some 🍿 now! 🤓❤️👍🏽
"Van who?" That'd be Van "The Man" Morrison, the father of Celtic Soul, one of the greatest artists of (Roughly) the same generation as Brian and the Boys, and arguably one of the greatest of the 20th century. Astral Weeks, Moondance, His Band and the Street Choir, It's Too Late To Stop Now, St. Domenic's Preview, Tupelo Honey, Veedon Fleece, Into the Music, Wavelength, and Common One is just the best run in a transcendent career; all react-worthy for absolute certain.
If you liked Pet Sounds, you should definitely give SMiLE a listen. Originally intended as the follow-up to Pet Sounds, SMiLE was scrapped due to various reasons, including Brian Wilson's declining mental health, pressures following the release of "Good Vibrations," and a lawsuit against Capitol Records. In its place, a less polished album recorded at Wilson's home, called Smiley Smile, was released, serving as a precedent for lo-fi music. Being almost a Bedroom pop Avant-Garde Psychedelia style of music. Though SMiLE remains incomplete, many of its songs and demos are as good as Pet Sounds. And the finished tracks, such as "Heroes and Villains," "Wind Chimes," "Wonderful," "Good Vibrations," "Surf's Up," "Vega-Tables" and "Cabin Essence," could be even better than any song on Pet Sounds and represent some of the highest points of 60s music. It's definitely worth checking out. th-cam.com/video/pHghQB4-t-4/w-d-xo.html
Officially petitioning for a SMiLE reaction here as well (The SMiLE Sessions that is, not the Brian Wilson one). If you think Pet Sounds blew your mind, wait til you hear that one, bro!
Ahh Smile sessions the legendary album that was shelved. Imagine if it officially released back in 67 we would have flying cars rn and the beatles never would have broken up😮 also if u like pet sounds and smile I recommend Wild Honey been listening to it all week
@@bigbananadealer846 Overall it's the same album but it has the 60s production and the guys vocals, actually despite missing the lead vocals on tracks like Do You Like Worms and Child is Father Of The Man it's much, much better on almost everything in my opinion. The 2004 version as good as it is feels more like trying to bring the live 2004 SMiLE to the studio rather than being SMiLE itself.
Bro, sparking up after “I Just Wasn’t Made for These Times” got me dude -that’s how it is man. I’m 25 and Pet Sounds changed my life, and has been there for me through very hard times. I’m glad you’re doing well and back at it bro 💪
Love your thoughts about I Just Wasn't Made For These Times. So powerful.. the song and your comments. Def gotta listen Smile next. Promise you it hits
I know I've commented a few times, but after finishing the video, I really recommend the biopic Love & Mercy cause it shows the creation of Pet Sounds and the follow up SMiLE, as well as what Brian was up to later in life. It shows the context and the magic that was caught in a bottle for this album. Honestly, there's no album quite like Pet Sounds, even in the beach boys discography. Beach Boys Today and SMiLE come close though. I'd definitely recommend watching the biopic before going into the smile sessions though! Glad to see you loving this album!
Thank you for this! I had no idea how sad this album is.. definitely amazing to see you find an emotional connection with yes.. yeah, were' all human. That is the most powerful thing music can do.. all of us just grew up a bit watching your reaction.. ❤

Typical, and wonderful reaction. Eyes widen in the first bar, a smile in the second, dancing by the third. the realization hits that Master Brian Wilson has been in your soul. You did need that smile.
As a longtime Beatles fan this album converted me into a Beach Boys fanatic. At first I thought it was a decent album but after a potent mushroom trip it changed my life. On a second listen there's a LOT going on in the instrumentation and vocal harmonies. I highly recommend the Smile Sessions and many of their albums up to the 80s. They deserve to be up on the same pedestal as the Beatles in my honest opinion. Have fun with the journey if you're willing.
Great review fella, really insightful and honest. Hang in there, you're really good at this shit :-) My favourite Beach Boys album (other than this) would be a blend of 'Sunflower' and 'Surfs Up', although I'd really recommend the latter as a full album listen. Some of their best tracks are on 'Surf's Up', and it's when Carl Wilson starts to really emerge as a songwriter to rival his brother Brian.
This is the best first reaction i have ever seen! Got a lot of vicarious enjoyment. Especially the smoke break after I Just Wasn't Made For These Times. That killed me haha :) The Beach Boys rabbit hole goes deeper than anyone expects...
Preach Brother. I hope you do listen to their other masterpieces! Smiley Smile is true Psychedelia, Wild Honey is R&B, Friends is a Waltz, Sunflower is a true Rock Album, Surfs Up is like their revival Album. Such amazing songs! Holland is too! So many beauties! I loved your commentary! Smoked a blunt with ya haha
This is the Pet Sounds experience. It always floors people the first time they hear it, no matter if you believe the hype or not. You are so right about this album being therapy. I've said before that it's an antidepressant of an album. The textures in the instrumentals are stunning, I always feel transported. Jazzy and melancholy are excellent descriptors. Such a raw, yet highly layered, beautiful album. Some of the best lyrics and production in modern music history
To say nothing of the amazing production .sound engineering amd arrangement. The changes on these songs are all so creative. God only knows has some of the most confounding, yet elegant and simple sounding, harmonic movement ever in pop music. The tonal ambiguity of this record (often no clear key center - sometimes bitonal) gives it such a feeling of emotional uncertainty and openness. Nothing quite like it.
I love how you picked up on the psyche element, the production, the strange atmosphere, planet it exusts on. Its creepy, exuberant..precision.. everything you saud is spot on
I agree with your point from the start. Music can indeed be used as medicine. Unless you're trying to treat an ear infection... in which case, probably not the best idea 😂
All these 60s songs will stick with you i'm sure, especially when you're going through a tough time. Hope youre doing well and just know youre not alone. Sending peace and love to all

Please don't mistake his genius for hallucinations. He is a genuinely empowering and creative person who suffers from Schizoaffective disorder. Please do not trivialize that disorder.
This is by far my favorite album. The reason you feel the way you do is because of the way this album has the power to make happy times happier, sad times happier and mad times calmer
For your next Beach Boys album I’d recommend Sunflower, where Pet Sounds is mainly a Brian album, Sunflower has got more contributions from the other ‘Boys, especially Dennis who sings two of my favs, “Slip On Through” and “Forever.” It’s a great album!
That's what happens when greats are inspired by greats, a product better than anything done alone (Rubber Soul, in part, inspired this album, which in-turn inspired Sgt. Pepper)
@@paninovevo1162 Not necessarily in sound, but it certainly has its level of innovation and creativity. Although it's sound and vibes are closer to Rubber soul... Hence me saying it's like you mix the two together.
@IsaacWale2004 honestly if Brian Wilson had never said that Rubber Soul inspired him to make Pet Sounds I would have NEVER thought that they sound any similar. To me Rubber Soul has a folk blues with a dry arrangement while Pet Sounds has that "goldie" magic and ethereal but Spectoresque vibe
@@paninovevo1162 And Brian was blown away by the US version of Rubber Soul too. That one was missing some of the more rock oriented numbers and substituted them with the folkier tracks from the 2nd side of the UK version of Help! ("I've Just Seen A Face" and "It's Only Love" in place of "Drive My Car" and "Nowhere Man"). It makes sense in a way, since those changes make it more eclectic and both Help! tunes are side openers. He still blew away the already great US version of Rubber Soul with what he put out, finally aiming to make every single track matter whereas every Beach Boys LP before had a throwaway song or two where not much thought was put into it.
Pet Sounds.....a classic album that only gets better with age. Brian said in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine that he smoked a joint and listened to Rubber Soul and that inspired him to make Pet Sounds. Although it might not be the best Beach Boys album (Today! and Sunflower are strong competitors), Pet Sounds is without doubt the most important Beach Boys album. It was their first "adult" album.....and it works on so many different levels. Wouldn't it Be Nice, Here Today, I Just Wasn't Made for These Times and the title track are all killer, while God Only Knows is among the best moments in recorded history.....thanks in large part to Carl's angelic lead vocals. Great video once again!
This is now rightly considered one of the best albums of all time. At the time, it was a stark left turn and it didn't sell well in the States. It did much better in England. Brian Wilson really took control on this record and created something magical. He was inspired after hearing "Rubber Soul" by the Beatles. The Beatles then heard "Pet Sounds" and were inspired to make "Sgt. Pepper's." The more inward approach on this record was also controversial within the band. Mike Love called this album "Brian's ego music," and didn't understand why they were no longer singing about cars and surfing. Brian took them in a very interesting and unique direction and he is a musical genius. He and Paul McCartney have long had a friendly mutual admiration and rivalry with each other. Watch the movie "Love & Mercy," if you get a chance. All about Brian Wilson. This album is definitely the Beach Boys' creative peak.
Great reaction, reminded me of exactly what is so special about pet sounds. I think you really ought to check out The Beach Boys' Smile Sessions. It's an album that was supposed to follow Pet Sounds, and was to be the most ambitious concept album ever produced. Unfortunately, it was never completed due to Brian Wilson's increasing mental issues, and other external factors. 10 years ago, they released the Smile Sessions, which used the unreleased tapes to stitch together together a what-could-have-been. It doesn't sound entirely finished, and it probably never will, BUT the music is transcendent regardless of that. In my eyes, it is the Beach Boys best work. Pet Sounds is relatable and human, but Smile is otherwordly. So yeah, definitely give it a listen if you can! Love your stuff. Edit: Just read some other comments and it looks like you've already been suggested this ad nauseum. Sorry about that lol
"This is like perfection...right?" You nailed it my friend. Paul McCartney has said it's his favorite song of all time, and I think it is the perfect pop song of the 20th Century, certainly the Beach Boys greatest song. For me, Penny Lane by the Beatles is right up there, but this song has no moments that aren't exqusite.
Glad you’re back in the flow, welcome back! Strong strong recommendation for Radiohead’s In Rainbows. Some of those songs will make you freak when you hear them - clear beatles influence + grandness of pet sounds + so much more.
“I’ve never heard music that sounds like this” is probably what everyone who listened to this album for the first time said. Glad you enjoyed this for the gem it is.
The Beach Boys sound was sweet summer melancholy. Songwriter Brian Wilson was in a class of his own. A sensitive introverted type, he took popular music to new heights as did the Beatles.
First time viewer here. I knew right away you were gonna feel "I just wasn't made for these times". It for sure blew me away the first time I heard it. Best song on the album 👌.
when they first recorded "I Know There's an Answer" it was called "Hang Onto Your Ego" and the Chorus, instead of "I know there's an answer, but I'm going to have to find it by myself" it was "Hang onto your ego, but I know that you're gonna lose the fight" some of the other guys in the band thought it was too pessimistic, so they convinced Brian to re-record the chorus.
Paul and the rest of The Beatles (along with countless other ingenious musicians) raved over this record. In fact, Paul said that he couldn't consider anyone to be "musically educated" if they hadn't heard this album! Welp, that makes one of us now, lol. YOU just heard the whole thing. I've long loved certain songs on it, but still need to immerse myself in it one day. Can't wait to see you hear their "Good Vibrations," which is not so much a song but a miracle, or maybe an angel in the form of Music...I get chills just thinking 'bout it!
“Exactly what I expected and not at all what I expected” is the perfect description and pretty much what the reaction was at the time. Classic Beach Boys vocals but a completely new sound with Brian Wilson’s production. Until now their music was about girls and cars and surfing for the most part. I would recommend the album All Summer Long to get a sense of their earlier stuff, and The Smile Sessions for what Brian’s follow-up album was supposed to be until he got overwhelmed.
Bro all the other Beach Boys records wont even come close to this one. That being said, my personal favorites besides this one is Surf's Up, Today, and Friends. Surf's up is the closest thing to Pet Sounds in my opinion. Lyrically and musically it's not even close to being as great, but it still hits for me in that kind of way. Musically theyre just DIFFERENT
love that you hear the dogs barking (Pet Sounds) at the end of such a sad song... did she throw herself at the speeding train?? this album was crazy 10/10
22:50 It's the bass note underneath the chimes that is making it sound "spooky". It shows how powerful the bass is at grounding us on another chord we might not have expected without it. Not to get into theory too much but in those first two bars, the chimes are playing G and E, which should create a consonant G6 or Em chord to our ear, but the bass chooses to play a low F, which immediately makes our ear hear the chord as a cluster of very close notes (dissonant) that we can only call Fmaj9(no3,no5). Bass has a lot of power as to how our ears perceive the "mood" of a chord progression.
It was fun to watch you enter the Pet Sounds world. It's been almost 60 years since Brian put this together and there has never been anything like it. It was perhaps the most influential masterpiece in Rock and Roll history.
Ooh, you're listening to the stereo version! That mix was made decades later, and is actually really good. Give the mono a listen! Brilliance of PS is how universal it is. Sounds so specific but its all experience and feelings we can all relate to i think. Sunflower, Surfs Up and Holland are albums worth looking at for sure. Later Beach Boys, Brian wasnt as involved as leader and Carl took up the role more. More mature records similar to Pet Sounds. But nothing quite beats PS
As others are stating this album was inspired by the Beatles and this album inspired The Beatles. Brian Wilson’s one of the greatest producers of all time. The sound of this record is just phenomenal. Mostly done by Brian Wilson why the other guys were on the road that’s why he used some of the great studio musicians he did. In between concerts, the band would come in and sing the parts that Brian had written.

Dont Talk is a total masterpiece, it really locks you in a trance and thats what i love about it. Brian is a beast for that one 😮💨
Finally, can't wait to watch this when I'm home
You might like the movie love and Mercy, which is a biopic half about this album
Aaaaaah I love the beach boys and I'm ready to follow this journey with you darius!!! I'm glad you're back man, Brazil loves you ❤❤
Man I’m so glad you checked this out.
I love your description of "sounds like what id expect, but NOTHING i was expecting" that was me too
I think Brian Wilson would dig your reaction.
In addition to the earlier
> BEACH BOYS TODAY, I recommend the later
> SUNFLOWER, on which all the members wrote songs. I mean there are a lot of good albums, but those are especially cool.
And if you just want to escape, go to
> BEACH BOYS PARTY, which is not a real party, but FEELS like a party.
The other thing is that, before this album, they were really a singles band. So for the early Beach Boys, you could do something like MADE IN CALIFORNIA, a compilation that's like Past Masters but it's just one banger after another after another .
#lifeofdariius
This might not be the best album to listen to when you’re going through relationship shit 😂
Tugs at the heart strings. Love the content bro 🙏
Smile would blow your mind!
There's a whole film about the creation of this album.
It even touches on the scrapped SMiLE album a little bit too.
It’s called “Love and Mercy “
@@Logan912 That's cool - I haven't actually seen it yet....
@@IsaacWale2004it’s a great great great movie, definitely worth the time?
Darius love this video. What you said about I just wasn’t made for these times made me feel why making music is important. 26 years old and these times and the fact stuff like this and Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On haven’t aged a day is a testament to how little we Americans have done to address injustice in the world. The way the music hits on “Sometimes I feel very sad.” Come on
Bro I’VE BEEN SAAAAAYING HOW KILLER THIS ALBUM IS LET’S GOOOO
Grrat review, "Don't Talk" is one of my favorite songs ever.
Good Vibrations is probably the best pop song ever recorded.
@@understone yes agreed,well it's definitely a contender.
You’ve got to listen to Odessey and Oracle by the Zombies one of my favorite albums
Hell yeah! That record is amazing and so is Love’s Forever Changes.
You don’t even know how excited we are with anticipation for watching this.
I suspect not all will resonate with you immediately, if ever.
But a handful of these are going to BLOW YOU AWAY.
Ok, gonna go get some 🍿 now! 🤓❤️👍🏽
"Van who?"
That'd be Van "The Man" Morrison, the father of Celtic Soul, one of the greatest artists of (Roughly) the same generation as Brian and the Boys, and arguably one of the greatest of the 20th century.
My Favorite Album; I've Listened To It Hundreds Of Times. You Brought Me Back To The First Time I Listened To It 50 Years Ago. Thank You!

Cannot recommend this enough
Officially petitioning for a SMiLE reaction here as well (The SMiLE Sessions that is, not the Brian Wilson one). If you think Pet Sounds blew your mind, wait til you hear that one, bro!
@@mondegreen9709havent heard smile sessions, only brian wilson presents, is it different ?
A real music enjoyer right here
Thank you for this! I had no idea how sad this album is.. definitely amazing to see you find an emotional connection with yes.. yeah, were' all human. That is the most powerful thing music can do.. all of us just grew up a bit watching your reaction.. ❤
This is a beautiful insightful reaction. I'm so glad you listened to the whole album. I think it may be the original "concept album."
Keep doing what you’re doing! And absolutely right, we are all just human beings ❤️ Best wishes from Scotland, UK. Sincerely hope better days are ahead for you. We love watching your channel.
much love Lottie thank you🙏🏾❤️
Typical, and wonderful reaction. Eyes widen in the first bar, a smile in the second, dancing by the third. the realization hits that Master Brian Wilson has been in your soul. You did need that smile.
DUDE! Your reaction to Beach Boys I know there's an answer was gorgeous! You nailed the whole reason for music. You and the beach boys. Jah bless.
God Only Knows is my favorite. You can see why Paul McCartney loved this album.
You need to watch Love & Mercy immediately. It documents Brian Wilson making this album.
the ‘smile sessions’ album is definitely worth checking out, the would be but never was follow up to pet sounds
The Boys were right there with the BeaTles
Great time in music!
Yeah, but the Beatles played the guitar, bass, and drums on their records. BB biggest record and they barely play on it.....freaking joke
Might as well been the Monkeys lol! Oh yeah, wrecking crew played their music too
The instruments are mostly played by the top studio musicians of the time. Special shout-out to Carol Kaye on bass!
Wrecking Crew, baby!!!!
Unless you're trying to treat an ear infection... in which case, probably not the best idea 😂
this is fucking amazing my dude
All these 60s songs will stick with you i'm sure, especially when you're going through a tough time. Hope youre doing well and just know youre not alone. Sending peace and love to all
We've all had a broken heart....I think I went through 3 liquor stores one time !
Hey Darius. Love your content bro. You have such a connected view on life and emotions and it is refreshing to see. You keep doing you bro. Respect from the UK
Great reaction dude, felt like I was listening to it for the first time again
There are a lot of video about the making of this great album. But the movie Love & Mercy will give you great insight into Brian Wison
This is one of the best reaction video I've ever seen. Perfect. You've earned a fan for life. Much love.
Brian Wilson’s basically the soul creative mind on this album (due to them Hallucinations😂)
Sole
Please don't mistake his genius for hallucinations. He is a genuinely empowering and creative person who suffers from Schizoaffective disorder. Please do not trivialize that disorder.
@@dhdbling2412 to quote Bill Maher: hes a "whiny little bitch"
This is by far my favorite album. The reason you feel the way you do is because of the way this album has the power to make happy times happier, sad times happier and mad times calmer
For your next Beach Boys album I’d recommend Sunflower, where Pet Sounds is mainly a Brian album, Sunflower has got more contributions from the other ‘Boys, especially Dennis who sings two of my favs, “Slip On Through” and “Forever.” It’s a great album!
Bro I just KNOW you gonna love the harmonies in this one
Sloop John B is a traditional folk song from the Bahamas. The Beach Boys first heard it from The Kingston Trio.
This album is basically what you get if you mix Rubber Soul with Revolver. Great album.
Glad to see you back, Darius :)
That's what happens when greats are inspired by greats, a product better than anything done alone (Rubber Soul, in part, inspired this album, which in-turn inspired Sgt. Pepper)
Sounds nothing like Revolver
Brian a true musical genius ✌️🙂
My Favorites....
Sloop John B
God Only Knows
"The drops don't normally sound like santa claus is coming" xD
Yeah i second this
It would be without a doubt better than pet sounds and top 10 oat if it was finished in 67
"This is like perfection...right?" You nailed it my friend. Paul McCartney has said it's his favorite song of all time, and I think it is the perfect pop song of the 20th Century, certainly the Beach Boys greatest song. For me, Penny Lane by the Beatles is right up there, but this song has no moments that aren't exqusite.
Sorry folks, I posted before reading anyone elses comments. Clearly many others tuned into the Paul McCartney connection...
A sensitive introverted type, he took popular music to new heights as did the Beatles.
you should def react to Smile Sessions by the beach boys
First time viewer here.
I knew right away you were gonna feel "I just wasn't made for these times".
It for sure blew me away the first time I heard it.
Best song on the album 👌.
when they first recorded "I Know There's an Answer" it was called "Hang Onto Your Ego"
and the Chorus, instead of "I know there's an answer, but I'm going to have to find it by myself"
it was "Hang onto your ego, but I know that you're gonna lose the fight"
some of the other guys in the band thought it was too pessimistic, so they convinced Brian to re-record the chorus.
They didn’t like it because it was pessimistic, it was too overt a drug reference (ego death is part of LSD culture).
The reaction the I Just Wasn’t Made For These Times is so real. All you can do is take a rip or two after that shit.
Such a great reaction to this great album. Thank you for doing this one, Darius. Really made me smile and also brought some tears to my eyes.
Goosebumps the whole time man. Love watching you react to this perfect album. Puts me in my feels every time.
Musically theyre just DIFFERENT
love that you hear the dogs barking (Pet Sounds) at the end of such a sad song... did she throw herself at the speeding train?? this album was crazy 10/10
love the consitent uploads, always happy when i see new ones
22:50 It's the bass note underneath the chimes that is making it sound "spooky". It shows how powerful the bass is at grounding us on another chord we might not have expected without it. Not to get into theory too much but in those first two bars, the chimes are playing G and E, which should create a consonant G6 or Em chord to our ear, but the bass chooses to play a low F, which immediately makes our ear hear the chord as a cluster of very close notes (dissonant) that we can only call Fmaj9(no3,no5). Bass has a lot of power as to how our ears perceive the "mood" of a chord progression.
if you like this (anyone reading) i NEED you to hear Come to My Garden by Minnie Riperton… talk about LUSHHHHH 🤩
Love and mercy is a great biopic about brian wilson and petsounds
As others are stating this album was inspired by the Beatles and this album inspired The Beatles. Brian Wilson’s one of the greatest producers of all time. The sound of this record is just phenomenal. Mostly done by Brian Wilson why the other guys were on the road that’s why he used some of the great studio musicians he did. In between concerts, the band would come in and sing the parts that Brian had written.
Don't Talk Put Your Head on My Shoulder is one of the most beautiful songs ever made. I hate to say it's underrated because it's a Pet Sounds track but it really epitomizes an amazing love song.
“I Get Around “
Great Beach Boys single
Pop Rock Gold !
