Gumball: "It's only weird if we make it weird"_ Or that one episode where Gumball cross-dresses and Darwin falls in love with him? Seriously, that show is so full of sexual subtext, that I honestly believe the creators made Gumball's Mom look that way on purpose just to be exploited by the internet. I love that cartoon.

The directors check and recheck all the work and the key animators check and recheck so much that this stuff cant;t slip in. It´s ALL planned. Before you even start animating, you write it out and storyboard it all. So the animators knew what was written before they started drawing. It goes hand in hand.
If it's Nickelodeon I can tell you first hand you can't change anything that comes from them. I briefly worked on Dora the explorer as an animator and my boss asked for some changes but they sent a standard message saying it would be copyright infringement and to just do what was agreed upon initially. So we did. The company I worked for was in east Europe. They didn't say stupid idea don't change, they just cited this rule. Still perplexing to me.

Ah, yes, about that bit in Sonic X: Anime has looser standards for what is acceptable to show to kids. Seriously, check out some of the episodes of Pokemon that never made it to the west, or some of the live-action stuff like the Kamen Rider series and the Super Sentai series.
There's plenty of weird stuff in Europe as well - France has lots of films with equivalent to U/G or PG ratings which have full-frontal nudity (breasts and penises clearly visible, etc). It's traditionally seen as more artistic than sexual. And the British Board of Film Classification still gives Watership Down a U rating, even though it's basically about a bunch of rabbits trying to find females to mate with, it's gratuitously violent (especially Blackavar getting his throat ripped out), and there's some swearing as well. It's kind of crazy that censors get so wound up about teenagers seeing sex and violence on TV and in video games when we study books and films which cover the exact same themes at school when we're far younger.

As for the jokes these cartoons may have been aimed towards kids but they wanted to make the parents laugh too. Because of that Animaniacs is still watchable now at 30 because while the humor is the same as it was back then you just understand it in a different light now. As for the DC cartoons, They were intended to have a split audience being kids to sell toys and teens/adults who read the comics and in doing that they should get points for managing to include both and making series that can still be watched today. Well also keep in mind that the rating system was a lot different back then as well some 90s cartoons were and still are impressive for managing a G rating. Take a look at the original animated GI Joe movie - several sex jokes, bit of innuendo... A kill count of around 10-20 not including implied deaths.

yeah I was just going to say that, it's in the same line as ren & stimpy and a few other shows about that same time. Basically some shows on nick were more meant for adults than kids but Nick just saw a cartoon and assumed it was good for kids. They did realize it eventually but just rolled with it
Ah, yes, about that bit in Sonic X: Anime has looser standards for what is acceptable to show to kids. Seriously, check out some of the episodes of Pokemon that never made it to the west, or some of the live-action stuff like the Kamen Rider series and the Super Sentai series.
There's plenty of weird stuff in Europe as well - France has lots of films with equivalent to U/G or PG ratings which have full-frontal nudity (breasts and penises clearly visible, etc). It's traditionally seen as more artistic than sexual.
And the British Board of Film Classification still gives Watership Down a U rating, even though it's basically about a bunch of rabbits trying to find females to mate with, it's gratuitously violent (especially Blackavar getting his throat ripped out), and there's some swearing as well.
It's kind of crazy that censors get so wound up about teenagers seeing sex and violence on TV and in video games when we study books and films which cover the exact same themes at school when we're far younger.

As for the jokes these cartoons may have been aimed towards kids but they wanted to make the parents laugh too. Because of that Animaniacs is still watchable now at 30 because while the humor is the same as it was back then you just understand it in a different light now. As for the DC cartoons, They were intended to have a split audience being kids to sell toys and teens/adults who read the comics and in doing that they should get points for managing to include both and making series that can still be watched today.
Well also keep in mind that the rating system was a lot different back then as well some 90s cartoons were and still are impressive for managing a G rating. Take a look at the original animated GI Joe movie - several sex jokes, bit of innuendo... A kill count of around 10-20 not including implied deaths.
Honestly I enjoy the regular comedy equally as much as the Adult Jokes it's kinda like saying adults can only laugh at raunchy stuff.

These were shows meant to be watched by children. So unless seven year olds were taking sex ed when these shows came out, jokes that were obvious to others would go right over the head of a kid. So they were, indeed, hidden from the kids watching the show.
