I lost my dad to COVID-19 two weeks ago and my mom and I have been recovering from the virus ourselves. Between mourning and being terribly sick I wasn't watching any youtube. This was the first video I watched in weeks and it made me smile for the first time in a few days. Growing up I always remember my dad wearing a quartz diver, a Tag Heuer 1500 ( I know how you feel about Tag Heuer lol) that he ended up giving to me a few years back when he picked up a much newer Tag. I have so many great memories of him wearing that watch and I'll cherish it forever. I just wanted to thank you for making content that can make me smile during these trying times.

  • @jamess8175
    @jamess8175 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

Fully agree quartz watches are far more reliable, accurate and hassle free than mechanical ones.
Two more points to add on top of what were being mentioned. First, solar powered watches are preferred, not just quartz. That is to prevent waterproof seal from being broken, say a G-Shock. I have experiences of having my G-Shocks' battery replaced and learnt that they are best done at the authorised Casio Service Centre because only they will reseal the waterproofing after a battery change. Another ordinary watch shop will only simply replace the battery without re-applying waterproof seal to the caseback, meaning you can't swim with the watch anymore. Of course the Casio Service Centre charges a lot more than the regular watchmaker. Therefore, a solar powered watch is ideal to avoid tempering with a watch's caseback.
Secondly, a watch with automatic time calibration further sweetens the deal as it eliminates the need for regular adjustment, say once a month or 2 months. Watches with Multi-band 6, GPS or at least with Bluetooth connectivity ensure you don't have to re-adjust the time, date or timezone whatsoever. Brilliant!
So I would strongly suggest these 2 functionalities on top of just a regular quartz movement. Seiko has its Astron range, albeit the high price tag. Casio G-Shock and Edifice would probably fit the bill nicely.

I agree on solar powered, or at least charging. The whole point of a quartz watch is accuracy and robustness (although I wish more manufactures would focus on style and dress quartz as well) and if I have to crack the watch open to replace the battery, then what’s the point of water resistance? The Seiko Arnie, Citizen Satellite Wave, and dare I say Apple Watch (hate all you want but it’s the most accurate and functional watch, with also a quartz element, on the market) are my go to most of the time because they are just ready to go, always.

When I first started collecting watches for real, I owned 4 watches that actually ran. Only one was a quartz, 2 were automatic, although I had two that didn’t run, and one old Timex manual wind. As it turned out one of the autos that did run was passed down to me by my Dad, and it was a Blancpain fifty fathom military model from the early 60’s. I had no idea of its value until my son who was already into watches posted about it on Horology talk. The response was tremendous! Everyone wanted it! I wore it as a kid to my Boy Scout camporees and just campouts. I also became a sea scouts, and used it for diving. It never missed a lick. I new it had some value, but it turned out that the Rolex band on it was more valuable than what I thought the whole watch was worth! I’m disabled, and have been on a retirement pension since I was 45, and the money it brought when I sold it got me out of debt and started a nice little retirement fund. Now I own 27 watches and only 4 are automatics. The rest are quartz. The big takeaway of this is that quartz watches are much less expensive than autos are, and that’s why I own so many of them. I can’t afford a nice auto but I own several nice watches now that are quartz. I love watches and enjoy the he11 out of them all! I watch your videos, and Jody’s religiously. Keep up the good work, because I’ve learned so much from Jory and Jody! LOL

One point in favour of quartz watches that is often missed... is that they can also give you things that mechanical can't.
When they have functions that would not be achievable (or stupidly expensive) with mechanics. I especially like analog quartz watches with many functions built in that creatively use the hands to display those function.
Two examples from watches I own would be my Casio EQS-A500 and my Citizen AS4020-44B. Some analog GSHOCKs would also serve as example. When you change the settings the hands whizz about left and right to show what's needed and when you're done they instantly swing back to displaying the time without having missed one second. I find those things hugely satisfying to play about with.
Quartz should be embraced as second technology alongside the mechanical watch, complimenting it and offering other things that mechanical might not reasonably be able to.

I wear loads of quartz watches ( not at the same time though ). I love them for all the same reasons as stated on the video. Don’t get me wrong, I love mechanical watches as well and they don’t have to be expensive to be in the collection, but they do require attention and by definition, the quartz watch is superior engineering per se.

There’s something almost mystical about mechanical watches, especially automatics. Never ceases to amaze me. I have them, the favorite of my collection included. But my quartz ones outnumber them 3 or 4 to 1. The Hamilton Field King I wear everyday on duty and the Hamilton Khaki Field I wear camping, hunting, etc are both quartz models. Accurate, sturdy, reliable, and oh so cool. Just strap on and go.

I agree with everything you said plus you can get Quartz watches with back lights. IMO Timex Indiglo is one of the greatest watch features in decades. When I was a kid in the 80/90s EVERYONE (well kids) wanted anIndiglo watch. Loom is fine if you have the expensive good stuff but it dosen't even compare to the purple Led lights like in Casios Gravity masters or timex Indeglo.

I go through phases of bouncing between my automatics and my quartz, but have always seen the latter as benefiting from being grab and go. From Fraser, husband of Leslie
Anybody remember the Bulova Accutron ? This was the first watch to move away from mechanical escapements by using a very small tuning fork powered by a battery. It probably got near to quartz levels of time precision, but obviously was expensive.
On my wrist now is a Citizen Eco-Drive that also synchronises ever night with the Mainglingen time signal in Germany. My Casio does the same thing, but uses the UK transmitter at Anthorn.
When I compare both watches in the morning, the hour and minute is always identical, but the Casio second hand leads by about 1/3rd of a second.

Another thing I like about quartz watches is not having to worry about magnetism. I know there are watches with magnetic protection, but those tend to be on the pricier side. I have a phone case with a pretty strong magnet on it, so when I wear my mechanical watch I have to carry my phone in my other pocket and be very aware of how close I am getting it to my watch. I've already had to demagnetize my watch which isn't a big deal, but it's not something I want to have to do on a weekly basis.

Brother, I appreciate your honest feedback, even when it's controversial. I have a go-to Citizen Flighthawk that is in regular rotation. I'm mostly an anti-quartz snob myself, but that doesn't mean there isn't a place for an F91W or a Casioak (eventually...) in my collection. I mostly don't wear quartz because it defeats my aesthetic goal, but I appreciate them and realize there's a ton of valid, interesting quartz pieces out there. I honestly cannot see paying hundreds/thousands for a quartz piece, though. Good episode!

for many year i had worn exlusively analog quartz watches, always rejected square digital watches, then i moved to automatin watches (orient), to have a single watch. i might have been a snob back then, but now i'm a big fan of casio watches, and wear them exclusively (f91w silver, a168, aq-s800 and under delivery GDB-800-8).
I wear them because they are light, comfortable, has more functions other than time, and they're just fun. it's funny, because the cost of these 4 watches are equal to one orient automatic i have (and which i do not wear anymore). futhermore, i no longer worry about damaging my watches. with the orient i always had that feeling, i was never comfortable wearing that amount of money on my wrist while being a tourist in shady districts or doing sports.

1)Yes quarts are convenient/amazingly so. Great point.
    2) Yes. They are resilient and able to live. And 3) You just throw it away if it breaks. Quarts is hard to service. It's cheap most of the time. Low maintenance watches. Check. Ease of wear.
    4) Immediate time source!!! More accurate. We set our mechanical movements with quarts and digital time...true..
    5) High tech difference. Refreshing and always with new movements. Also true. But I personally hate the tick of quartz!! I adore sweeping hands. Like the Grand Seiko. You have to see it live to believe!

On your point 5, I would recommend a Grand Seiko spring drive with mechanical sweeping movement but pretty close accuracy to a quartz due to the quartz crystal contained within. Best of both worlds but comes with a high price.

The Expedition is green plastic, with cheap looking gray ring around the face. I broke off half the gray ring, and the plastic is worn smooth. It still works, and changed the battery maybe four times. I lost the Expedition behind my bed for five years, and it was still going. I'm not a watch person, I just love my watches. I have one for work. One for kicking around. One for travel. One for when exercise. Then I have the Expedition.

Of my 15 or so watches 2 are quartz. The 1st, a Tag Hauer 200 meter Professional I bought in 2000 before becoming an automatic watch enthusiast (spent about $300 to have it completely refurbished in 2019,) and the obligatory G Shock all you watch guys tell me no collection is complete without. The 5610 with solar and atomic time and yes, they are both cool as hell and I do use them to set all of my autos with.
You can certainly appreciate a nice quartz watch without taking anything away from the mechanical watches that so rev most of our motors in these parts.

I would like to say that I found it very difficult to find a quartz day/date but after a lot of searching I finished up with an Accurist. I do like accuracy which is why I bought quartz and didn’t bother to wear my Sinn 104T. Good video. I Prefer Quartz Watches. I have a couple of manual and automatic watches because I think they are interesting and cool in their own way. However, I prefer quartz watches because of the many reasons that you mention in this video. I am lazy sometimes so I just like how easy and convenient a quartz watch can be. I don't have to remember to wind it or shake my wrist. My solar Casio with atomic timekeeping is as "Set It and Forget it" as you can get! I use it to set all my other watches. Although the Casio is my most precise and perfect time keeper, a certain Bulova Precisionist is my favorite watch for sentimental reasons.
