Now this isn't just a bunch of MG segments strung together, mind you-- these are very carefully selected highlights from around 20 mystery guest appearances by these top 10 favorite-voted guests.
We have these polls periodically in the Facebook group, which will help a great deal in support of a new book on WML we're working on to be published next year by McFarland. The clips are in no particular order, since the "Favorite Mystery Guests" poll is actually still open as of this writing to rank these top ten picks. So if you'd like to vote, make sure to visit the group and register your voice! It's a lot more fun than certain other kinds of voting that I understand to be going on in other areas of life.

I did that watching the "Star Trek" bloopers and outtakes at the sci-fi conventions! I can now watch the actors and actresses from "Enterprise", etc. (as their chrs.) cut up and mess up on You Tube on my DVD series sets. Still, I had fun watching this as I like the olshows better. better.
The first Jack Benny segment was cut too soon. Jack asked if he gets paid for tonight and when he gets to Dorothy to shake hands, she hands him a dollar bill...priceless. All in all this is a fabulous compilation!
I love how the celebrity guests are so delighted to be there.
Gracie is #1 for me. "Don't answer George, it will give us away." Not only the most distinctive voice imaginable but she uses his name.
I wonder where the idea for the line, 'Don't tell him Pike' came from? 🤔

This was their closing running gag for years.
I can never get enough of these old shows with talent and class that outshines anything since then.

This show had the most legendary guests on it . That's what made it iconic in television history
Not old enough to remember some of them but Google is our friend, right.
A favorite was when Ann Landers was on- apparently she was not that well known- advice to the lovelorn.
Some tremendous performers included here. Debbie Reynolds was staggeringly beautiful and very clever and funny.
I was a kid in the 60s and this show was cancelled in 1967, it was syndicated & that's when I started watching (had no idea it existed in the 50s) and tried never to miss an episode, it was so entertaining. I especially like these 1950s episodes, the guests and panelists were so polite, well-spoken, intelligent and classy--a far cry from today. I can see why this show lasted for 25 years!
Can't we bring these absolutely wonderful humans back to monitor and advise today's group (2022)

She was close to 48. She was born in 1907 and this was 1953.

These were great times. Classy celebrities and people were dressed lovely! The singing by Louis Armstrong is the best!
My favorite Rosalind Russell was great!
Arlene was always trying to get the talent to sing or share their talent, but Louis was the only one who gave in and sang!
So happy Arlene finally got someone to sing for her. Louis was great!

Louis singing the whole "Hello Dolly" a cappella - today, that would go thru legal, cost a fortune, or else get blown into a huge number. Hugely underappreciated for his musicianship. Classic!
Very true about the legal ramifications-- and as a matter of fact, Louis actually broke a contractual obligation by singing the song on WML! He was contracted to debut the song on television on another program, I believe it was the Perry Como Show, and just didn't care. His manager, Joe Glaser, was reportedly having a brain aneurysm offstage seeing what was happening. You couldn't contain a spirit like Louis's with a piece of paper. :)

"Don't answer, George." What a funny, brilliant, wonderful woman that Gracie Allen was! One of a kind!
None was smarter. Her humor was for too long portrayed as "dumb." Instead, it was basically an alternative perception. Brilliant patterns of thoughts and brilliantly executed. There's a bit of Gracie in Maria Bamford.
George wouldn't have been Anything without Her.
I imagine the request to start speaking was a deliberate feed for that line. Very funny, and similar to the later joke in the British TV series "Dad's Army" which became one of the most famous lines in British comedy, when a German U-Boat commander demands the name of the dim-witted young soldier and his equally dim-witted commanding officer says: "Don't tell him, Pike!"
@@kevinlee9751 George was great as a straight man to her and the affection between the two of them made everything work. Gracie Allen could not have been Gracie without George Burns being there. It's like saying Bud Abbott would nothing without Lou Costello. It was the team that made it work.

I wasn't even alive during Gracie Allen's lifetime, but she was quite a delightful sprite of a person and entertainer. She played to great affect as the ditzy partner. Revealing their identity by speaking was brilliantly funny.

Louis at ~41:00 singing Dolly. Oh my heavens! Superlative. He sings just like he plays trumpet almost the same passage as you can see it. Terrific! Shows you the difference between the raw talent of a star like Louis when he is put on the spot, he makes an immediate decision if he is going to do it at all he will do it with all the artistry it demands. No halfhearted effort nothing less than five stars, wow!
I know it’s been 3 years since you wrote this, but I hope you can see these words now when I say Satchmo singing like that really hit home how things have changed so much in 60 years… but then again, 60 years is a long time. I’m thinking about how much had happened the world 60 prior to this broadcast.. back around 1900.

I often replay all Debbie Reynolds of WML ... and introduced her to my kids and grandkids, they were in shock to find out she was Princess Leia's mother ...

What an era for entertainment! Louis Armstrong was great! I can’t believe he stumped them with his iconic voice even disguised! Debbie Reynolds’s was just a doll! Art Carney was hysterical and Danny Kay so handsome! Lucy speaking Martian had me cracking up! What a treasure to have all these old clips!

She was more than just nice. When people recognized her on the street, she did her best to be cordial to them. Would give an autograph upon request. All of the characters she played in her films was someone who was trying make somebody else feel good.

No doubt... on what other show could you find everyone from Colonel Sanders to Salvador Dali, from Liberace to Frank Lloyd Wright?
Big celebritys like Walt Disney, Frank Sinatra, Steve McQueen and Sean Connery were also mystery guests in this show.
Well the German show "Wetten Dass?!" had a lot of celebrities, too when it was still famous. There were people like Bill Gates, Michael Jackson and many more international celebrities.

Jack Benny still remains my favorite comedian too, IslandGirl 9152! He was so hysterically funny, and his show on both radio and television was enormously popular for many decades! The cast on the shows were also hilarious! I adored them all and miss them all!

These people had more fun doing this show than any other I have seen...even more than the Gong Show in the 70's

Daly was a tremendous host. All of these guys seemed to have a blast.
Hell yes! Great host! Entertaining without trying to be 'cute'! (Ive noticed the same thing with all of the non-stars -- the 'ordinary' people -- they are all people of real substance! Its not an act -- they didn't know how to be cheap of low! Maybe that's the direction of human evolution -- In about 100,000 years!)

Some of the shows were he'd obfuscate the answer are really funny. And when Fred Allen was in the panel, he'd come up with some very funny retorts to when John would do this.
I loved Debbie and Lucy. Surprised they didn't show John Wayne. He got the biggest standing ovation I ever saw on this show..

Every guest was off the charts amazing that appeared on What's My Line. The One & Only, Genuine Satchmo was nothing short of Wonderful ! 💜🎺🎺

Margaret, she was underrated. In fact, I think she was a genius, and wish screenwriters and directors in the late 60s and 70s had been shrewd enough to take advantage of her brilliance and build pictures around her.
I think she was the first movie star, I had a crush on. Whenever 'How The West Was Won' was released.....I was still a little kid......but remember seeing it in one of those Cinema theaters. I recall being upset that she didn't hookup with Jimmy Stewart's character ( Linus, the mountain man )......but eventually ended up with Gregory Peck instead. I guess in retrospect......he was pretty cool also.

John Daley was so articulate and amazing. That he could come up on the fly with some incredible answers and be so funny ad maintain a wonderful command of the English language, so such an amazing feat. Today it would NOT be allowed. Everything would have to be scripted!

Articulate and kind man with all of the guests. People in general had better language skills on tv. Now a days it’s very rough and crass language for the most part. My parents were of this generation and they never used a ‘ bad’ word in their home or otherwise. Different times.

I had never seen Arlene laughing so much.
She was so well respected in her lifetime there are not enough adjectives to describe everything she did to make this world a better world. One of life’s great mysteries is how very little is said about her in todays educational system. In todays world this could be fixed at the college level.

She certainly was beautiful, far more class & beauty than boozing Elizabeth Taylor! Some friend, huh!! And Carrie fisher, Debbies daughter, was an absolute worthless daughter, didn’t speak to her mom for 10 years, very close to the man eater, Elizabeth! Debbie died one day later after Carrie died, it wasn’t from a broken heart, God called Debbie home, it was her time!! I loved Debbie, I wish she could have been my mother, I would have been loyal & loved her to my dying day! Debbie was still beautiful at 80, she kept her youthful looks, I think her own daughter was jealous of her, but many daughters are jealous of their mothers. I saw Debbie eating in a restaurant in Denver once, it was like light was shining out of her face, her smile was electric.

The parade of stars and well-known public figures on WML were astounding - but one of my undeniable favorites involved Louis Armstrong (38:09), who gave of his talent so freely as a MG, and whom the panelists and audience revered in unbridled and loving return. I ALWAYS cry when I see his segment...
How beautiful he sang that without any music! I just loved him and old enough to remember seeing him on TV.

Debbie Reynolds has got to be the female star who has the cutest, most engaging personality, along with the prettiest looks to go along with it! I’d say the star that has the same qualities equally as Debbie is Elizabeth Montgomery aka Samantha on Bewitched!

This excellent compilation epitomizes why it was my favorite quiz show in those top mid-'60s years of television! Just so much great fun and laughs from this show plus "To Tell The Truth" "I've Got A Secret", "Password" and a secret look at people just being themselves, on "Candid Camera" airing just before this greatest-of-all tv quiz shows, "What's My Line?" The two biggest losses in the show's 17-year history (1950-67) were: Fred Allen, only 61 (May 31, 1894 - Mar. 17, 1956) and Dorothy Kilgallen, only 52 (Jul. 3, 1913 - Nov. 8, 1965). Both were irreplaceable, and deeply missed by the cast and the public.
Omg, Louis had to be my absolute favorite of all of these top 10 wonderful guests. What an incredible talent!!!

I like the one when Fred Allen questions Red Skelton as the Mystery Guest. (This was an early episode before the panelists were only allowed a single question.) Allen immediately catches on and asks Skelton a series of questions that make it clear he knows Skelton's identification. Allen's final question is "Is your first name also a color?" Skelton answers with a sigh, "yes." Allen then deadpans, "I don't know who this guy is."

Rosalind Russell was the most entertaining of all the mystery guests on WML.
The first Art Carney segment of WML was, imo, the shortest 1 minute and 14 seconds in game show history. But the other Art Carney segments on this great game show were hilarious. Absolute comedy gold!

But it was an infectious laugh.
It was so much fun watching What's My Line. I had some good laughs. Great entertainment!
A great line up of some of the best old-time talents this world had to offer. Missing, however, is my favorite, Herbert Marshall. His appearance on What's My Line was priceless.
I love Jack Benny in this montage. I have come to love his shows, wish I could have seen them in prime time back when. I wish he'd been able to film "The Sunshine Boys" as planned before he passed. "Oh, shut up!"
