  • Former Indiana University Basketball Coach Bob Knight speaks with WRTV's (Indianapolis) Ed Sorenson in 1987. This clip never made TV for obvious reasons. His team went on to beat Syracuse in the National Championship in New Orleans 74-73.

For those of you impressed by this, it's a valid question. You blow someone out by 51 and then have a close game? It's a generic question and you can give a generic answer. Bottom line is you can be a good, even tough coach without being a jerk like Knight was. There have been great coaches who didn't need to be jerks like that, on AND off the court.

The crazy part was, he was giving a GREAT answer when the guy interrupted him. I would have loved to hear the rest and to know what advantages home court really does have both in real terms and with the mentality of the players. Most will dismiss this as “Knight is just an ass”. The guy really screwed up an opportunity at some wisdom both for himself and his viewership.

It’s true. Many things go into winning and losing. That’s why a coach like Knight on the bench is truly rare. indianas current team if playing without the three point line would have a 30+ point margin of victory and would be number one in the nation. With the current rule, not shooting many and not at a high percentage and giving up 24 points a game behind the arc…you have a very average team. Whether coaching can figure this out through motivation, scheme, preparation, scouting, in game strategy or straight up improvement remains to be seen. NIL and transfer portal has changed the game forever and there’s no going back. Thank God I lived to experience the glory of college basketball. It’s now just a farm league and money game:

No, he was full of shit. He outright claimed there's no home court advantage. I don't think he actually believed that, he was just a being contrarian because, as one might reasonably state, Knight was just an ass.

Also, the way that a game is refereed makes a huge difference. I watched a live Division III game last night. There was only one ref. He walked the side of the court where the scorer's table was and the two benches. He never called a foul, travel or carry (no one calls a carry today) on the opposite side of the court. I counted 30 travels and fouls on the home team on that side of the court. The visitors probably had 10 or 15 ridiculously hard fouls on that same side of the court. The ref wasn't cheating for the home team --- on purpose. The home team won by 20.
The NBA office used to give the refs rules tips before playoff games. I'm not sure if they still do. The instructions basically were to influence which team the refs favored. Do you think that there was another reason why Shaq could commit a dozen offensive fouls a game and not have them called?

Bobby Knight was like Donald Trump towards the press 30 years before Trump. He basically originated the concept of only respecting interviews where he respected the interviewer.

Unlike most people back then he wasn't scared of Knight, but didn't want to be openly hostile or Knight would have never taken another interview with him.

He was a bully. This is the result of years having unbalanced power over young men who had to put up with his crap, same for mid-level reporters; when he coached the Olympic team he never dared to speak to those players as he did during his college years. He wasn't tough - he was akin to a senior in high school picking on a freshman.

Not really there tuff-guy. I actually competed in a man's sport - college wrestling. Knight's big mouth wouldn't have lasted too long in the room. @@brianmoore645
