- In 1980, 60 Minutes profiled the legendary basketball coach. Knight, who coached the Indiana Hoosiers for 29 years, died this week at the age of 83.

I was an IU student and worked for the Athletics Department at Indiana University in the 80s. Coach Knight was a great motivator, and with the lessons of life he taught us, inspired me to become the man that I am today: Successful husband of over 28 years, father of 4 great kids, and a successful business owner-dentist for the last 33 years.

As a guy from Indiana who was a kid in the 80’s I want to thank Coach Knight for bringing my Family together every winter to watch IU Basketball. He had so many great teams and was such a larger than life man.
Those were the days.
The difference between a genius and a madman is success
He demanded players work together, be responsible off the court and follow directions he gave. Coach knight never wanted to say what if after a loss. As long as you prepared and gave it your all. Most people now a days get in their own way of success. He was leading success. RIP Coach.
He put Indiana basketball on the map. So many kids bounced basketballs in Indiana because of this guy. He was an inspiration.
As always we appreciate people more after they’re gone.
In the 80's, if you said the word Indiana to an american in any of the 50 states, most common people would reply "Bobby Knight". Im glad I lived in a world with him in it.....

Coach was great, and even though most those folks that don't understand the first lick about anything think of him as some monster or tyrant, he made sure each player's was a student foremost, made certain each kid kept his grades up and got an education that would be there after playing basketball was done and gone, you know, back in the day when a person had to actually work to get somewhere in life, one didn't expect to get everything handed to them, the smarts to get up off the floor and seize life, because back then Pro Basketball was different, tougher, and not every good player got a million dollar contract, life went on. Heck yeah....Coach was Tops!
Thank you Bobby! You are the BEST. You will be missed but never forgotten. I cherish the basketball that you signed for me back in 1997 when my daughter attended IU! GO BIG RED!
My parents both passed away last year. They were both BIG IU fans and loved Bob Knight. They would watch their games faithfully and even went to a few games.
What does that say about your parents .,very little .. cos if weee they decent parents they would not turn a blind eye to a bully .. winning is only part of sports ..been a great coach Is on and the court ..bobby fail on many grounds
Coach's job was to coach and win, not to be a nice guy and tell them kids lies, and win participation trophies

Coach Knight and coach parcels coached together, I love both of them, that's how it should be intensity, it's missing today, my father is the same way, there will only be 1 coach Knight, r.i.p, we will miss you!
People who are soft and don't wanna work for anything will hate Bobby Knight, but people who are willing to sacrifice the me attitude and work hard will love Bobby Knight. He's one of the greatest coaches ever in any sport.

I grew up on University of Iowa basketball and Bobby Knight at our foe Indiana was then considered the best of the best, and very, very hard to beat.
Bob Knight was not the easiest guy to play for. Indiana basketball under Knight won 3 national titles and the program was clean because Knight expected the team to be that way. RIP Coach Knight.
Bobby Knight’s critics and haters envied his success cause they could never achieve anything close to it. Three national titles, never had an academic or recruiting scandal, and his players who completed his entire program almost universally have positive things to say about his impact on their life. That includes IU’s current coach, Mike Woodson. Knight recruited boys to play basketball at IU; those same players left IU as men. That’s the greatest sign of an outstanding teacher and coach. Knight was surely flawed, but so are we all. IU is better off for having him as a basketball coach.

He did charities but had a habit of choking and punching his players and assistants. Who’s to say he was a bully 🫠

What a bad comment
He was the undisputed best coach for a long period. He had good points and bad points. 3 National Championships is extraordinary and you can't argue with that. Last undefeated season in NCAA history, can't argue with that. He played in 3 consecutive NCAA Championship games with Ohio and won one. Coached U.S, team to gold medal in the Olympics. Made his players study and do well academically, which was an extraordinary feat all its own. But he lost out to his temper, the 3 pointer and better recruiters after 1989.
Finally, someone gets it.

You don't get a coach K without Coach Knight
they had their falling out , that's for sure. But coach K probably got the best of RMK more times than not over the years. He also won twice as many rings.

Bob Knight was one in a million. I still remember being a young athlete waiting for his practice to be over so we could have our game. As a real fan, I was near the front trying to get a glimpse of my hero. Evidently we didn't clear the gym fast enough and an angry Knight came to where we were standing and started pushing us out. I was pushed by the greatest coach to ever live. I couldn't believe it. Rest in Peace, Coach. You've earned it.
Wait, are you saying you were waiting for his practice to end? But then you say you didn't clear the gym fast enough but weren't you waiting for their practice to so you could take the court he was using?
@@dabneyoffermein595 Southernbelle was likely referring to multiple occasions throughout weeks; perhaps spread out over numerous years of intramural sports. I am an IU grad. He was pushed out a few short years before my time. I never had the pleasure to be in the presence of Coach Knight, but it's widely accepted axiom in the state that it would have been an honor to take the abuse by Coach Knight as a player, if only to have had the opportunity to have been taught by such a great man.
@@dabneyoffermein595.Yeah, we came from our locker room to see what was going on. We didn't know he held closed practices, so were standing around the tunnel watching. Coach yelled at us to get out and we were taking our sweet time checking everyone out. He didn't like that and started shoving us out. He wasn't rough with us, he just meant business. There were a bunch of assistants clearing the gym as well. At least he didn't throw anything..LOL We were all just college girls who didn't know any better and it seemed fun at the time. We had to wait in the locker room until an ass't told us the guys had finished. This was back in '70's and women's basketball took backseat to everything.
@@southernbelle3995 thanks for the clarification for me. I'm dumb that way, lol, that's so interesting. Back when this happened, he must have been a bigger than life character for anyone coming across him, like it must have been surreal. Women's basketball has come a long long way, glad you were able to see the way it was so that you can share the differences. I have a customer and she and I always share what's going on with the strong college women's teams (D1) each year or discuss coaches or changes in it. Thanks again for giving us some nuggets of your encounter with RMK.
That makes no sense
Was Bobby Knight a flawed person? Yes, he was like many of us. As a coach, he was tough, but a winner. However, 98% of the players he coached graduated from college, because he emphasized education. You can’t take that away from him either.
98% of the players who STAYED AT INDIANA graduated. Knight had an inordinate number of transfers in his tenure there, way before the transfer portal was ever a thing. Take out the transfers and less than 50% of the people he recruited graduated from Indiana. And before you talk about "soft" players, one of those transfers was one of the most competitive, hard-nosed players ever, Larry Bird. Knight didn't "emphasize education" when he tried to cancel scholarships of players who turned out not to be as good as he thought they were...or, worse, if they had the temerity to get injured.

I was there when it all started ... my first year as a student in Bloomington was Knight's 2nd year as coach ...
I was a gym rat and I played pickup games with guys from that undefeated '76 team ... I knew a few players who also told me stories about Knight ...
Having said that, CBS should have booked an interview with ME because the eulogies I've heard in the past 24 have all been mush ...
I find it fascinating how a sports illustrated writer, who probably never played a day in his life on a court, and has face like a carpet, said bad things about Bobby Knight. Well, I played ball, some serious ball in New York City division one high school, the cage and Rucker Park, and I have all the respect for this man as rude as he may appear. But then again, if you look who his buddy was at Westpoint was another guy named Bill Parcells, and I wonder how he did in the NFL. People judge things they don’t understand.
The SI journalist was a great example of why Knight hated journalists.

The greatest ncaa coach ever. His high graduation rate showed he cares.
Bobby Knight was the old guard, "it's my way or the highway, buster!" and "you get over here and you listen to me!" and he demanded excellence and execution, and he hated losing but he loved his players and made them tougher and made them into men. His coaching style was very stern and very tough, but he won games and championships, and you can do that stuff if you win ball games, but when you start losing is where you can't get away with that behavior. Nonetheless, Knight was a tremendous ball coach and great man who did a lot for the players that played under him. I respect the man because he still cared, even though he was a hardass. In the line of work that I am in now, I understand why Coach had to be that way, just to a lesser extent now because Knight's tactics in coaching and mentoring would not fly today.
I would say, his unwillingness to change Offenses was more detrimental than his abrasive behavior.

Played with a GUY named "Preacher Harold" forever....To give me forever memories at Purdue..He had a weird Bill Cartwright shot. Harold told me...the time he was recruited by the General and he made 100% of all his shots and turned to his boys and said "he'll will shoot just as accurately, but he'll shoot it RIGHT...Harold quit basketball and got a full tennis scholarship... "He won't shot like that for me on national TV". Can't really complain because of his methods other than LARRY BIRD..

Bob Knight was there to do a job, and was one of the best to ever do it. He did make some mistakes, but he never resorted to cheating, or boosters, or any money management organizations. And made sure that his players went to class and graduated. RIP Robert Montgomery Knight. 🫡

I was there when Mono Brow/Davis was there as a nurse..I wish I had a chance to beat on them. They have their own pretty boy network stadium. At least at Purdue, I had a FIVE chances to beat on Etwan Moore and Trevion Davis at the Co Rec and I showed up with a broom stick in pick up..I like the way I was disrespected by the outgoing quarterback when Anthony 'mono brow' Davis was there by the University of Kentucky. Get degrees PUNKS...

It's fair to criticize Knight for some of the methods in which he used. Even so, the people who despised Knight deep down understand that his principals of what he believed is what is needed to achieve victory and a prolonged thriving society. Today's younger generations would greatly benefit if they we're challenged this way. Life is hard. It's even harder when led by weak leaders. Bobby Knight wasn't a weak leader. RIP Coach!

At least Knight had courage to stand up and speak up. (I had one coach that was such a wimp. Her attitude rubbed off on us.)
