  • Hi All
this episode gives a direct comparison between two BSA Goldstars, one with a completely standard suspension set up, the other with a progressive front spring set up and classic girling style shocks on the back, i give a back to back ride comparison and share my conclusions.

Thanks for this comparison video of these suspension set ups. I have a Legacy and feel the change of rear shocks would be good, though i tend to prefer the look of the Hagon shrouded shocks. The problem for me is while i would like fork springs i'm not to keen on the spring preload mechanism, they don't sell the springs on their own. I will have to look elsewhere.

    hi all
it was very interesting comparing these two bikes. i was surprised at how little you could spend to make such a noticeable improvement or certainly in my humble opinion. the upgraded red bike certainly felt a more competent package. From the messages here it seems that BSA are depriving our American friends the opportunity the ride this reborn classic. im growing more concerned that BSA are showing signs of problems. if you start to discount your products heavily, and seem to have large stock excess floating around in the uk then that seems to me assure fire way to upset your existing customers and possibly put of new customers. only time will tell, but id like to see the brand thrive.

Great video mate, unfortunately we can't get those in the States right yet and highly unlikely they will ever pass muster for regulations in CA with their draconian emissions standards, but in the mean while we yanks can dream a bit. I was wondering if that big, bulky and unsightly radiator can be swapped out for a less bulky and smaller T100 factory radiator from Triumph, maybe a bike mechanic can chime in on that matter? It certainly would look better. Either way, we all here in the States are bloody salivating like 'Pavlov's dog' to get our grubby hands on one. Cheers.

I also upgraded the rear shocks on my GoldStar and noticed a big difference. I ordered them from Tec and gave them my not inconsiderable weight and they made the uprated shocks to suit at £88 inc vat. Easy to fit and i have them on position 3, good investment might do the front forks as well now.

Great video, thanks. When I bought my 77 XLH Sportster new the first thing I did was to fit progressive fork springs and rear shocks, I also changed the stock Goodyear tyres for Continental tyres. What a difference that all made for the ride and carrying a pillion and also cornering. I actively looked for bends and roundabouts as the bike handled much better than stock. Still have the machine.

Thanks for this really useful back to back comparison. I was considering the TEC rear shocks, but they don't do the shrouded ones anymore. Are the ones on the red BSA a straight swap with no modification required? I've got a Shadow Black, so the black bodied TEC shocks would look OK, but I was after the retro look of shrouded shocks really.

The genuine Girling shrouded rear shocks are still available, I bought a pair for my Legacy Edition, they cost £155 on eBay. The TEC shrouded shocks were a cheap copy of the Girlings. The stock BSA shocks that I removed are now on a 1980 Benelli 900 Sei.

You can buy shrouded shocks from Hagon and also NJB shocks a long time supplier for classic bikes.
