Takes me back to 1973 when I was 17. My best friend owned a Gold Star and we had been for a swift half (just the one, officer) with me riding pillion. He stopped at the trafiic lights and I was totally relaxed and day dreaming. As he pulled away, I rocked gracefully backwards and if it wasn't for my feet lodging in his armpits, I would have been left sitting in the road! Happy days. Another great review, Freddie.
Hello, from Yosemite. Back in the early 80'had a late 60's BSA. Don't recall the year, but I do recall the tank was all chrome, with the badge, of course. Anyhow, I'm a little over halfway through your video, wanted to post that.... because of you, I'm gonna get one! Had no idea they were out (I do think you may have made a comment on one of you're other vids.. possibly). Just got my 442 Rocket, was gonna grab the new KZ you posted about not too long ago buuuut...think it's gonna be this BSA, LOVE the tank/badge! It's old new! Thank you Freddie and Monika!
All the way over in Yosemite, great to hear from you!🙂 Really glad you enjoyed the video and the fact you used to own an old BSA must make the return of the brand even more special!
@@FreddieDobbs Of all the bikes I've owned, original ones, the BSA was the most unique. However, the BSA was only compared to Harley, Triumph, KZ 900/100, Kawa GPZ 550, Honda 550 Four. Now, had I had a Norton, Ariel Square Four, Matchless, woulda been different. But, yes I'm thrilled the BSA is here!
Freddie, I’ve watched about 6 reviews of the Gold Star that came ahead of yours, including the MF, but only now do I have a proper feel for what this bike is all about. It’s not just about the specifications or the nuts and bolts, it’s all about the feelings and the sense of occasion that the bike invokes when you ride it. The modern retro motorcycles are more like lifestyle accessories than just modes of transport and no one puts that point across better than you. There’s basically nothing wrong with any of them; it comes down to how they make you feel. Another great start to my Sunday morning, thank you Freddie & Monica.
A gentleman and a motorcycle for gentlemen. What a wonderful day, the English are lucky enough to ride their motorcycles in December, without any ice or snow on the roads.
The Indians have managed to produce a bike that exactly captures the spirit of the old Goldstar, and dare I say it; is even better than the original. Well done.
And with massive technical and design input from British engineers and designers. Don't forget that...check out their own videos. A true collaboration.
Great video, Freddie, as always! Love how you focus on the emotional ‘feel’ the bike gives you - for me, that’s the key to motor biking. It’s the way a bike makes you feel that’s most important, not the stats and figures, or where it’s made. Well done and keep it up!
Superb video, you always manage to embed in your videos, some ingredients that others just can’t quite match. I think it’s the honesty, passion and true enjoyment of what you’re doing and testing that just hits the mark. Look forward to the next one
Freddy, why on earth does no one ever think to mention a W800 as a modern classic and competition for theses bike? i think you definitely need to reach out and get your hands on a new one! in fact if anyone reads this can supply one, let Mr Dobbs borrow it please! ;)
I think (as do probably tens of thousands) that this review is just another reason why we smile when we see another vid pop up. I love this review as I love a vid on where to get a coffee. Entertaining...informative...funny...and fun. From a couple who love bikes, and cheap travel. 💙 Love from NZ as always, and good luck. And that BSA rocks and will sell big time. It's gorgeous.
Thanks for a great review. BSA bicycles were legendary in my native country.. Then I experienced the RE Bullet, a classic British design in India. I toured extensively in India on modern Japanese bikes 'cause I did not trust the old Bullet to let me down somewhere deep in the Indian countryside. I think your cinematography beautifully captures the nostalgia these retro bikes have come to represent. Hopefully I can rent this BSA when I visit the Himalayas next.
If you can know how to handle the few quirks of that bike, it can take you along for a long time. Yezdi Roadking rider here, which has been dependable even to this day since 1995.
Freddie you captured the essence and nostalgia of a bygone age - also the analogy of the 60s style with just enough modern tech to give peace of mind for every day use - great video 👍
Great review, Freddie. Always the best journalist to describe what the emotional appeal of what a motorcycle brings to the table. No one does it better.
Quantifying character is almost impossible but you seem to have the ability to do it Freddie! As always fantastic production quality and editing. Better than any content you find on TV!
I love you travel vids and vlogs - but I had missed your bike reviews! So many other bike reviews will just reel off the spec sheet but you actually tell people what I bike 'feels' like, and that's phenomenal!
As always, a top review, great looking bike, I wish someone would compare it with the Kawasaki W800 as opposed to the Indian made alternatives and Triumph as the Japanese bikes have been seen as the quality of the field for so long.
Great work Freddie - I love your William Woolardesque presentation style and enthusiasm for the marque.....and on top of that it is a cool bike isn't it!! I'll take the green one please!
Just watched this again Freddie, and you really captured the essence of this motorcycle. I did originally comment very positively, but I was also on a rant about the business in general so I deleted my original comment. I’ve got a BSA here to review, and first impressions are very positive. 👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks for the video. I fancied one since they were announced but worry about the delays and company. I also can't part with my RE Classic500 at the moment and only have room for one bike. My Dad has had a 1959 BSA A10 Super Rockets for about 25 years. My parents have been all over Europe on it. I love that bike so the draw of the brand is strong. Thanks again. Peter
Thanks for your unique Freddie perspective. The dials actually go the same as everyone else's, clockwise. They just start at the 2:00 o'clock instead of the 7:00 o'clock point right? The important bit you covered was in an overview manner which and focuses on the riders experience.
Well, I haven't seen a bad review yet, and you're the first reviewer that's given a pillion opinion, which is very important for me. I best start saving then.....
Royal Enfield and Triumph sell thousands of bikes a year and BSA at the moment just have a few demo bikes going around. Looks like a great bike but only time can tell what these bike are like once they get some real miles on them. I’ll wait for long term owner reviews before I decide to put my money on a bike that still has no track record on reliability and after sales service. If I was buying a bike today I’d put my money on more established brands with years of production, history, and service I can research and study. In the past 2 years I’ve owned a Himalayan that has its share of problems and currently own a Street Twin that hasn’t been trouble free. That being said BSA would seem like a huge risk with just their first production bike in decades. As always I enjoy the content Freddie. Stay safe and keep ‘‘em coming. Cheers
We mustn’t conflate this BSA brand with the original, unlike RE there is no BSA DNA in this brand, it’s only marketing. Like you, I await user reviews and RE’s response; I’d love to see a RE 650 Classic single but realise that’s wishful thinking and it’ll more likely use their twin but it is top heavy.
Great review Freddie! Interesting that you put it directly neck and neck with the Enfield. Mr flyer portrayed it as a lot more dynamic and better built than the interceptor, in fact halfway to the triumph. That is praise indeed as he owns an interceptor. Nice touch with the cigar.
Morning Freddie, So reminded me of my dad at the start, you just needed a pint of Watney’s Red Barrel to complete the picture. Good to see everyone riding the BSA at last.
Since I bought my Triumph T120 I am constantly surrounded by older retired guys reminiscing about the good old days. These types of bikes kind of speak to you, just sit on me an take me for a ride to a coffee shop or an afternoon tea 😁😁 no fancy tech getting in the way of the sound of thump thump,😁😁😁
ANOTHER superb video! Thank you... As a former owner of an '04 Triumph Thruxton, which I purchased, apart from video promos, sight unseen at the tail end of '03, if memory serves; I have a deep appreciation for this new BSA. Compared to what, you ask? Well, I also have a '64 BSA A65SH in a Rickman style flat track, Nickel plated, extremely light frame! I loved the Triumph, but it was the visceral pleasure of riding this former racing motorcycle, converted to street use that really got my blood pumping. Needless to say, I am, at a somewhat advanced age, eagerly awaiting the moment these become available in the States. It truly is a beautiful looking bike, and hopefully more than just a tip of the hat to a wonderfully built antique.
I was in the market for a new bike earlier this year, this and the Interceptor were two on my list. With all the confusion surrounding the Gold Star I eventually bought a Street Scrambler to go alongside my 76 Bonneville. I love the way you approach the review, about how it makes you feel riding it, way more important than performance stats. Same with my bikes, it’s all about the vibe. I’ll test ride one in the spring (it’s winter here now in the Austrian Alps and snow, ice and salted roads are the order of the next months!) Have lurked on your channel for a while but really enjoyed this review, keep it up fella!
Fantastic quality production as always! One thing you'd currently get with the BSA over both the Interceptor and the T100 is exclusivity. Add that to the £3K saving over a T100.... What's not to like!
Goddamn Sir. What a lovely aesthetic way of presentation. Sitting here in a remote corner of India, I felt like a Brit for 20 minutes. The way you dressed, the way you described stuff, the surroundings, the bike. Absolutely beautiful
Very good video. I rode the Interceptor a month ago. Only criticism was suspension. I don't think price difference of £300 is an issue and worth paying because the BSA has that extra "something".
Another brilliant review, Freddie. Well done! Yeah, I think I may have to add one to my garage to keep my RE's company, and to own another British designed bike with classic appeal. Not gonna BS... now that I see the reviews for the actual production Gold Star, I really want one.
When it comes to competition it really is simple. If you are in the market for t type of bike, it is this or one of the RE twins. The prices are close enough to make no difference. Personally, the RE Continental GT has "it" (and is sitting in my garage as we speak).
A perfect bike for a simple old school bikers like me😁. Don't need much power and speed, just a simple vibe riding on the roads, it's a glorious feeling. That kind of beautiful bike is enough for me😁🙏 hopefully someday 🙏☝️. Thanks sir Freddie for another motorcycle review 🙏 hope for your next content. Ride safe and God bless you both 🙏☝️
Wow Freddie, just that shot of you pulling away with the cigar on the go and flat cap with the thumping single cylinder sound……I want one so badly now😉. Well done, great content as always.
Oi, mate! As always, a fine review of a great bike; but I was sorry to see you with a coffin nail. I've said before: if you're gonna smoke, smoke something that's good for you and worth smoking-a blunt or a spliff!
Well done Freddie. Another enjoyable video with a tasteful blend of style and unbiased information for this new retro classic motorcycle. BSA has put out a beautiful bike with a reasonable price tag. Nice voice (although I would like to hear it with the baffle removed) and plenty of unique styling touches all around her. You're right about the stunning tank design. The world is good place with motorcycles like this in it. Keep up the good work man! Already looking foward to the next video.
That music from 60s is perfectly suited the video. I just fell in love with this bike the way it looks. Robustness and sleekness both together. A perfect example of classic british two wheeled automobile just like RE continental GT in cafe racer style.
What a Beauty! I had it on my "bike radar" and knew it is coming to Germany in 2023. But I didn't knew it will be this nice. If I was in the market for a real Modern Classic, that bike would be a no-brainer. 90% Bonneville T100 for 60ish % of the price and the slightly markup vs. the Interceptor is totaly worth it. Thanks for another great review, Freddy!
I absolutely loved the style and presentation of this video. Nicely filmed, good sound quality, and all the relevant questions answered. It took me back, in ways, to some great times in the 70's, when smoking wasn't the social crime it has become today. As the saying goes, everything in moderation. (Actually, I was part-owner of a BSA 500 single some years back, but that's another story.)
Love that the British brands are making a comeback. This bike looks quality and the style is fantastic. It's got brembo's. If it's great on the motorway as said seems pretty sweet package.
It's not a British brand. It's a badge owned by an Indian multinational. If Honda had bought the badge and knocked out a 'Goldstar' would it be a British brand?
Great review Freddie... flat'at and a roll up ...very fifties... just one point Freddie, the clocks aren't going the wrong way they just start from 13.00 hrs instead of the more common 19.00hrs...
Greetings from California. Its great to see modern generation Brits rooting back to their wonderful 'Made in England' heritage rather than bashing it. This thing is a brilliant time machine!
Buy with confidence? It's not even on shop floors yet. This is where the enfield & the triumph have the edge , known products and known manufacturers 😉
Finally some decent competition for Royal Enfield. I don't particularly love this model, but I'm looking forward to see what else they got in the works.
I had the original back in the late 60s, for me it's the single cylinder feel and sound, also the nostalgia and brand memory, this bike looks, it just looks.
Really glad you like it, I think it's one of those bikes that people will go for because of its looks over everything. I do like singles. I hope confidence will grow in the company and there aren't any more delays getting them on the road. Sadly not for me, but then neither is the Interceptor so it's not an anti BSA thing just a style thing. Good to see you on the roads again in the UK countryside 👍
Excellent review Freddie. I was surprised to see one in a dealership in Chester yesterday (Same colour). I didn't test ride but it did seem very comfortable.
I would say that the biggest battles and struggles BSA will meet, are from the old dying brigade who make senseless comparisons to a bike that was obsolete 60 years ago. The bike looks absolute stunning and I wouls really love to try one. The new BSA has its place in the market, just as the Royal Enfield does.
Great review. The major element that gives the Enfield the edge is a robust supply network. One that they are expanding themselves, with plenty of experienced dealerships used to the servicing and spares. I'd be happier to pay a few more hundred for the premium parts it should have. Transfers on the engine casings dissapoint me.
I have a carbed BMW F650 and an FI F650CS. The Rotax 650 single is a very capable engine which has character and flexibility in a very reliable package. I would say between the RE and the BSA,if I was buying, I would check both out and go with the one that speaks to me and have no regrets going forward.
Wow, what a motorcycle ! would want to own this BSA when it is available in USA. Like the round headlight and overall style. Can't wait to experience driving this motorcycle. I am very sure I would love it.
I like the raised rear mudguard. The single exhaust looks good. The uncluttered view of the left-side of the Rotax engine. The clocks go the right way. They just start in an unusual place. You could definitely Eurpoean tour on this bike. I, and seemingly half of Germany, used to on XT500s. I suppose a prospective buyer will be influenced by the fact the BSA is a single.
Going to have to calm myself down after Freddy's detailed description of the ride. My hearts going Pitta Patter Pitta Patter. Joking aside, I will add that this is genuinely the best bike review, and a "should i buy' video I have ever seen, I stuck to the end, and I'm not even in the market for this bike!
I was waiting for your review for last few days and finally it is here. Yes, this bike is just a classic styles bike and everything in it might now b mind blowing but its right and reasonable. It will take some time for the BSA to pick up market and distinguish its own category and customers.
Hello Freddie, The last BSA Goldstar Built by BSA was in 1972 and it was a 500 B50ss Goldstar. Admittedly Not the DBD variant but that was the last time BSA used the name Goldstar and they ceased production in 1973. A friend of mine in Detroit Michigan has got a 1963 BSA Goldstar DBD 500 Still in it's crate and it's brand new and must be the only one in existence. I can send you photo's if you wish to see it. I like BSA's and i have just bought a 1970 BSA 650 Firebird Scrambler with the hi level pipes and i think the power output would be similar to the new Goldstar. I think the bike you are road testing is £6,800-00 as is the black one and the silver one with the silver mudguards. The bike in highland green is £6.500-00 and the legacy edition is £7;000-00 and it is silver with chrome mudguards and handlebars and polished cases. A good report and an enjoyable watch. Thumbs up. Cheers.
Great review. The clocks spin the "right way" (clockwise) but the needles start 180 degrees from where they normally would. Compared to most bikes. I have a 1964 Triumph TR6... on that bike the tachometer spins counter-clockwise and the speed spins clockwise. That took me a minute to get used to.
Love the video, getting hold of one for under 5k new in red could be my return to 2 wheels. 😁 This bike could be my 51st birthday present in December 2024. Watched a few uploads but you have swung my interest. Thanks
Another entertaining and informative review. I watch your videos on bikes that I'm not even interested in just because the content is so rich. Present bike, excluded. The Gold Star looks like a peach of a bike.
The only thing returning is the badge on the tank and a vaguely similar look. If Honda had bought the badge and built the same bike I wonder if so many would've been so inexplicably excited.

What a great review.I cant wait till they are available in the US the BSA will be added to my collection .
I thinkk it looks better now than when they first showed it last year, must be the thinner exhaust. And the price seems fair as well.👍
5:30 Engine looks like a heart and gives the feeling of one. Nice structure.
Beautifully presented and filmed. The enthusiasm and sheer delight of riding just shines through. Bike review as a work of art, unique.
What a great start to a Sunday morning cheers Freddie loved it
A perfect bike for a simple old school bikers like me😁.
@Isthatbikedieselmate_ that's hardly the highest accolade.
Great review Freddie... flat'at and a roll up ...very fifties... just one point Freddie, the clocks aren't going the wrong way they just start from 13.00 hrs instead of the more common 19.00hrs...
Thanks for another great video. It doesn't matter how many reviews have already been made, you always bring something new to our attention.
Greetings from California. Its great to see modern generation Brits rooting back to their wonderful 'Made in England' heritage rather than bashing it. This thing is a brilliant time machine!
Excellent balanced review thanks Freddie
Well done Freddie, you nailed it again. Thanks for the review.
Great looking bike! I love this style of motorcycles and the smaller displacement engines.
I'm not a huge fan of the new BSA project but I can't help but be a fan of your videos 😀
Great to see the BSA marque back & a really enjoyable review....
Excellent review Freddie. I was surprised to see one in a dealership in Chester yesterday
(Same colour). I didn't test ride but it did seem very comfortable.
Thanks Paul! It’s amazing to see them in showrooms- it still doesn’t feel normal that you can go and buy a new BSA!🙂
I would say that the biggest battles and struggles BSA will meet, are from the old dying brigade who make senseless comparisons to a bike that was obsolete 60 years ago. The bike looks absolute stunning and I wouls really love to try one.
The new BSA has its place in the market, just as the Royal Enfield does.
great talk about the bsa gold star
The clock don't go the wrong way they sweep clockwise like every other analogue clock. It's just that the needle starts at 1 instead of 7 o clock
Beautiful locations and light, you've got a really good eye for them
Great review. The major element that gives the Enfield the edge is a robust supply network. One that they are expanding themselves, with plenty of experienced dealerships used to the servicing and spares. I'd be happier to pay a few more hundred for the premium parts it should have. Transfers on the engine casings dissapoint me.
Yes sir back to videos that brought me here and made the channel great
I have a carbed BMW F650 and an FI F650CS.
Love the cigar! Great video. Good looking machine.
Thanks to the big indian companies who are bringing jawa, yezdi, bsa like bikes back to life..enjoy everyone!😁👍
Really a very beautiful bike. I am 39 and i had motocy
cle when i was 16. Few months ago i made a decicion to get a motocycle again :)
Watching your review makes me want to put on denim jeans, leather jacket and boots and ride out on my classic ..which I don't have. Well done sir !
Same here....
That means a lot, thank you🙂🙌🏻
Very stylish video, capture’s the spirit of those long lost days, as douse the bike.
I love the exhaust note of the single cylinder 650.. beautiful bike….
i didn’t realize until watching your video that single cylinder is HUGE. i knew it would be large being a 650 single but my god it looks cool
Would definitely choose the Royal Enfield over this
I was waiting for your review for last few days and finally it is here.
Thumbs up. Cheers.
I would LOVE to see this ‘63 Gold Star! If you’re happy to, please do send me an email to dob.bs@outlook.com
Thank you!🙂🙌🏻
It was a Gold Star, not one word but two.
This bike could be my 51st birthday present in December 2024. Watched a few uploads but you have swung my interest. Thanks
A very nice little video fella & what looks like a great motorcycle!
Well done fella, you absolutely nailed it.
Another entertaining and informative review. I watch your videos on bikes that I'm not even interested in just because the content is so rich. Present bike, excluded. The Gold Star looks like a peach of a bike.
Another entertaining review loved your introduction.
A bit more competition in this sector is a win-win for us consumers 👍
Great review Freddie. Very well presented and with excellent video and music selection. The best review I have seen yet on the BSA. 👏
Hang on a minute Grae!!! ;0)
@@TheMissendenFlyer 😄 I very much enjoyed your review also... 👍
@@grahamtricker4103 Hmmmm.......
The only thing returning is the badge on the tank and a vaguely similar look. If Honda had bought the badge and built the same bike I wonder if so many would've been so inexplicably excited.
