John Deere 5020 Repower- 8V71T Detroit Diesel

- I have been itching to make this video since the start of this channel, and here it is!
This is our 5010/20 Detroit Repower with a 8V71T Detroit Diesel, this is the only one I have seen with a turbo feeding its blower, which is what really sets it apart. With the turbo, this tractor pushes about 360 horsepower! This tractor is wrapped in 900 60R32 rear tires, and 16.5-16.1 front tires. I welded a set of rear rims for this tractor that push out the sidewalls to give the tires a wider profile. In the rear tires we have added 160 gallons of windshield washer fluid per tire as extra weight for plowing, and built a custom weight bracket for the front weights. We have also equipped this tractor with the Wheatland fenders and dust shields. As clumsy as they are to step over, the dust shields really tie together the tractor. We have also moved all the hydraulic controls to a console, where we can control both remotes and the 3-point hitch. This tractor had two radiators when we started the restoration, we took the small radiator out and replaced the bigger radiator with one that had an extra core. It takes a LOT of plowing to get this tractor over 190 degrees. With removing the front radiator, we had the room to put the 5010 fuel tank back in its original spot. The exhaust pipe leaving the turbo is wrapped in lava fiber where it gets a little close to the hood, and exits the hood as a one piece straight pipe with no visible clamps.
In the video we are pulling a John Deere 3600 6-bottom plow. This tractor handles this plow with ease in 5th or 6th gear. 5th gear at 2400 RPM and 6th gear at 1800 RPM are the sweet spot for this plow and tractor, leaving a level job, and covers the trash well.

Its not just the added hp and speed, both of these increase the efficiency of the plowing. Allows for better penetration of the plow and more rollover and aeration of the soil. 5020's were very much under powered in the factory version, so this repower really improves the looks and the working ability of these tractors.

This video got me to subscribe. Uncorked/straight-piped, 2-stroke Detroit diesels are like my beloved rock and roll. I have run dual-exhaust, no-muffler 318's over-the-road/long-haul. Also, I want to see more farm tractors like this. When I started farming in 1974, I bought a brand-new, IH 1066; and the day it was delivered I put a chrome, straight pipe on it. Always kept my tractors waxed.

I drove a mid 80’s GMC general dump truck that had the 8v71 with both turbo and blower. It was factory. In that application it was pushing 440hp. A royal beast.
You can blow smoke up some people's - - - but you can't blow smoke up mine. If it was making 440 horse power it was a 8 V 92. END OF DISCUSSION.

That 8V71T makes that beast a true grunt. Hell, if you put a bunch of weights on the front. You could really out work these newer half mil tractors at a fraction of the price of 220-350 horse tractor.

I had a 8v71t in a 73 GMC semi. Not long on miles, about 200k per overhaul. It would take a good 350 cummins to bet it. Hell of a drag race motor.

Great Video and Excellent restoration on your JD. Just FYI..... the Detroits do Not utilize "Superchargers" per say.... they are Roots Blowers, which are just volume air movers, in other words they Do Not "compress" (re: pressurize) air, Internally. Any boost generated by a Roots type positive displacement blower is strictly due to back-pressure resulting from pumping a higher volume of air, than what the engine can handle per revolution.
A great thing about the Roots type blower is that regardless of how much external pressure may build up... the air temperature remains quite ambient within the blower casing as it passes through the helical lobes. If everything is "tight" on a Detroit, you can generally register 3 to 4 psi in the air-box on a NA engine, and higher of course with a turbocharged version... depending on which blower you have.
The best blower to use for making as much power as possible WITH a turbocharger, is the High By-pass version as used on the marine engines. There are three different case versions, the standard blower used on all the NA (Naturally Aspirated) engines with no by-pass valve, the By-Pass blower and the marine High By-Pass unit. There are also a couple of gear drive ratios for the Roots, all over-driven to a minor degree (8 to 12+ percent, roughly - I don't have the numbers right in front of me at the moment) compared to crank rotational speeds.
The other type of positive displacement blower (or "supercharger") is the Lysham Screw Blower, which actually compresses (pressurizes) the airflow Internally before exiting the casing.... they are also much more expensive, due to the complexity and required tight tolerances of the lobes. They have been around since the 1930s, but only on large diesel engines of the medium speed class (between 250 & 900 rpm maximum) as found on mid size ships and some European diesel locomotives.
Since the late 1980s they have become "down-sized" and can now be found on 100 percent of the Blown Alcohol Dragster & Funny Car classes of both the NHRA and IHRA drag racing, as well as some of the Top Fuel & Fuel Funny Cars in both sanctioning bodies.
According to the MODEL numbers on the ID plate on your 8-71T... was it Originally built (the engine, only) as an 8V71T, or was the turbo added at some point later?.... and IF so, were the pistons, cam, injectors (and timing), 4 valve head (?), etc, changed at the same time, if at all?
They are Fabulous engines and legendarily reliable..... just Never let the engine temp rise Above 200 degrees, Especially with 4 valve head(s).... and only let it idle long enough for the turbo to spool and Cool down, them shut them down if their not going to be put back to work within 5 minutes or else the cylinder temps will drop down considerably and you run the very real risk of glazing the liner walls.... never a good thing.
One of the leading causes of increasing black smoke and at the same time... more and more oil drainage from the Air-box drain tube(s).... is two fold, excessive idling and leaking blower drive seals, resulting in increasing amounts of oil in the airflow from the blower, which also results in "coking" in the intake ports which in turn, results in decreased scavenging, less power and increased black smoke and fuel consumption. I resealed the blowers on my V12's about every 100,000 / 115,000 miles or about every 9 months plus or minus.... and Never had any of the issues, that others had... it's called Preventative Maintenance.
I've known guys who sent their 8-71's to be rebuilt (never "rebuild" - always Re-man... much cheaper in the long run), After removing the blower, then remounting the blower after a rebuild, cursing the engine and the re-builder because it "blew up" in 50,000 miles or less!!..... in reality, it was their own Ignorance (of the engine) and sometimes, stupidity... that caused it. OOOps, sorry for the "book"!! Anyway, and once again... Thank you for sharing your tractor and the fantastic restoration of it..... don't "let it go"... stay with it ("Preventative" Maintenance ALWAYS Pays off in the long run!) and take good care of it.

Worked at a uranium mine, big eagle. We had pacific trucks powered by 16v71 Detroit. Loved those old trucks.

An 8v71 with a turbo was sold as a 350 hp. A Detroit guy told me that they lowered the compression on a 318 and then hung a turbo on along with the supercharger.

When I started farming in 1979 we looked at and ran a 5010/20 with same Detroit in Grand Forks ND area, would have loved to bring home and work with, but at the time thought about how long trans and rear end was going to last. That is a great restore and fun to watch in action!!

Make sure the 8V71 gets enough revs - don't lug it at low speed for hours and hours, or you could melt a piston. They only lubricate properly when screaming, >1800RPM or so.

It's a fallacy that you'll melt a piston or break a crankshaft by lugging a DD 2 stroke engine.
@@SomeTechGuy666 Tell that to the guy who brought his 8V71 bus to the Bus Grease Monkey (known to all DD 2-stroke aficionados on TH-cam) that was down a cylinder because of lugging through the Appalachian foothills of Tennessee; 2-strokes need revs for proper lubrication and cooling under load.
@@Acoustic_Theory Complete BS. The only thing that causes a cylinder to go out is a bad injector. They lubricate and cool just fine at lower RPMs. In boat applications they are often run at part speed for days at a time.
The user in this YT video even admits to running a gear high and at lower RPM.
@@SomeTechGuy666 I’ll leave it to the more experienced mechanics to adjudicate but lugging any engine under load is not a good idea for longevity. (This is different from low idle.)

This is a souped up tractor,that works on an almost daily basis,and is a good old puller and with the tires and turbo,it's has plenty of power,and counter balancing the front end better will help eliminate some of the bouncing that occurs,lid like to see it with custum dual tires and wheels in the rear

Beautiful tractor. Would have been great to have on the farm back in the 60s to mid 70s when people simply couldn’t get enough horsepower to keep expanding acreage. The crown wheel and pinion and final drives are amazing in these tractors. If the synchro shaft and counter shaft needed attending to because of the horses who would care given all the extra productivity

Conversion to side console for the hydraulics is a HUGE improvement, Deere should have done that years ago during production. Nice looking rig. I guess when you wear out the Detroit you can drop a 3408 Cat in her. :-) !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I grew up between Iowa City and Williamsburg Ia and there is a agriculture factory (Kinzee) and they repowered some of those tractors. Loved to be able to drive that monster! I live Ofallon MO now. I grew up driving several 4020s. But this is a beast! May have to do some surveillance work and steal your tractor:) just kiddin but keep up with videos. We switched to IH 2+2 (snoopy) and that was something else.

The non turbo is 318hp from factory I’d say 360 is conservative and they do not like to lug all the power is at or near wot
