My Dad and Uncle were both John Deere dealership owners and I was around “Big Green” all my life naturally. I still love the old pop-pop 40’s, 420’s, but in this line I think the 4020 was one of the best all around tractors. This video brings great memories though, I lost my Dad two days after Thanksgiving 2021. I will carry on as long as I can.
Boy there are sure a lot of sourpusses here. "Waaaa he's going too fast!" "Bu bu bu he doesn't have enough bottoms!" "Boo hoo this field was already disked!" "Dur if they were plowing in X they couldn't go that fast because X!" Of course they're showing off. This is the farm equivalent of a classic cruise-in and drag. You don't go to those to see a rusty stock 70's Mustang drive conservatively down the strip. Unclench those cheeks and enjoy a beautiful old hot rod JD tearing it up! We had a 4430, a 4020 and a 3020 on our hay farm growing up in the 90's. All restored to factory new, and my dad made me wash and wax them every spring and kept clean between cuttings. We ran Freeman 2 tie balers behind, also painted nice. I hated all the work keeping them clean, but I also loved knowing we had the best looking fleet in the county. Still love seeing that vintage of tractors.
thanks robert first time in the field with that tractor i was tryimg to break in that motor by pulling it but even in 5th gear it didnt pull it very much had a great time that day
Farmers are one of the hardest working and worse payed people in this country. I was a farmer in mexico when I was a kid,But we didnt have this kind of equipment because there was no money to buy such things,We did it mostly all by hand. Thats why I know how hard and honest and God guided this people are. God Bless the US and protects them from the evil politicians no matter the name or political party they belong to
theyre more computerized now but still good machines the secret to it is NEVER loan somethin like cause sum fucked up dumass could abuse it and fuck it up i NEVER loan anything i have most people dont have no regard for others peoples equipment

I worked for a friend and we restored a 6030 with a 619 also. We're in Northern IL and pulled a 7/18 oliver plow 6-8 inches deep. That was an awesome combo to plow with. I actually did alot of plowing with it...not really nice to run, but it was fun anyway.
I hear ya. It's like that here in north eastern NY too. We just creep along and try not to go rolling down all our steep fields. Seems this area is better for grazing, cows of course, but I think sheep and goats would be the way to go in my opinion, but it just never really took here. Winters are hard here too so that doesn't help either
Needs Raydex bottoms , we have a few rocks of that nature here in Michigan also , but we've sold alot of them to the yuppies too , they think theyre cute , I've seen pasture you could walk across and literally not touch the ground .
@@aaronwarr34 Boy could I tell you some stories , used to do mechanic work for a guy that did nothing but sell rocks by the ton / graveltrsin load / 160,000lbs , he would clean out fencerows ,charge the farmer a reasonable price , sell the rocks , and the excavating / landscapers would drive 50-60 mi one way to get them , what a racket .
Damn nice looking 6030, my favorite example of the 20 series tractors, well the 7020/7520 were pretty sweet too, pretty much haven’t seen a green tractor that wasn’t my favorite:)
Had to be pulling that plow in 6th gear. Wasn't the 6030 just a 5020 with a turbo? Spent many hours on the 5020's back in the 70' and early 80's.Have the hearing loss to prove it! Thanks Big Tractor Power for all the great videos. Makes me feel like I'm 18 again.
There are some key differences between a 6030 and 5020. I will have to get the sales brochures out and compare. A 5020 vs a 6030 might make a good specification video in the future.

By the time I left for college in 1968, my literature stack covered everything from the 1010 to the 5010 and the 1020 (and 2510) through the 5020. A career in defense aerospace took me a world away from our small farm on the mid-Missouri prairie, and somehow all those wonderful brochures are long gone. Now I watch TH-cam and marvel at technology like gigantic differential GPS-guided tractors and combines. The most extreme tech we had then was when my dad equipped our open-cockpit 1950s-era two-cylinder John Deere tractors with AM radios but it was terrific - plowing (moldboard plowing!) after school blasting rock and roll on the radio!
I’m a big John Deere 4430 guy. The person who had our 4430 before us used to us it as a pulling tractor yeah it has enough power to pull our 9 shank chisel plow through the fields. We are the second owner of the tractor and when dad and grandpa bought it it only had rops on it so my dad later put a freshly redone cab on it till this day she still Gallup’s. I think it had about 2,000 hours on it when my grandpa bought it

He's making a fool of himself, hrs trying to show how big and powerful the 6030 is, but the plow isn't more than 4 inches in the ground, where I come from we plow 8" and the 6030 wouldn't hang
@@RJ1999x ,,, couldn't keep the front axle of our 4020 on the ground either. Was such an improvement when we traded it for an 856 Farmall, with a spring reset plow, vs the JD hydraulic reset.
I can't believe how fast he's plowing! Appears to be almost 14 miles per hour! Toward the end of the video that was a red tractor with a white covered top plowing at what I expect a typical 1970s plowing speed to be. Takes a lot of horsepower to plow at 14 miles an hour.

Here I was thinking that was a Kinze repower. She sure scoots along with all that plow. That would still be a 5x14 plow tractor around here where there's slick, dense yellow clay. Probably 4x14 or 16 when you get closer to Lake Michigan where they have that tight red clay. That stuff is sticky, too. Like a dog turd on a lawn mower tire sticky. Lol! Now that I think of it, my 560D might actually be a 5x14 puller in that area of Ky. Mark Holcomb how many Clydesdales is that putting out? Iv got a VT 903 in my .kenworth and thats putting out around 380. Its got a bigger N14 turbo on her thoughh pumping up to 20 psi. The 903s sound beautiful and when set right they do pull.. love to see a vid of it mate. How did you mate it with the JD housing?
The tractor's bouncing at the front, but the operator doesn't look like he's moving around too much. Doesn't look too bad compared to riding a hard pan seat bolted right to the rear of the tractor. I've gotten my most jarring shots from small tractors and hard seats with no high speed needed. Recall my grandfather doing everything balls to the wall with no regard for himself. He started off cultivating with mules and I think he was just so happy that the tractor never sat at the end of a row.

250 bu corn produces a bunch of stalks. Even back in the 70’s the flail shredded or disked before plowing. Back then 100 bu corn was big. These older plows are not built to plow freshly harvested stalks. They plug up fast if the stalks are not sized.

I am sorry to hear of your Dad’s passing. The Two Cylinders are solid tractors. My favorite is the 720. The 4020 is one of the all time greats.

I like a 6030 orginal and drive it like it was designed, which is more interesting and satisfying.
That’s like going to the drag strip and being bummed out because all of the cars aren’t stock.
The 619 is the john deere replacement engine for the 6030.Updated version of the same block.

@@RJ1999x ...I dont see anything wrong with the depth he is plowing since it's a competition.
@@toledojeeper2932 I can run my field cultivator that deep, plowing is usually 1/2 the cut in depth. 18" bottom 8.5-9 inches deep
