  • A few years back, host Brian Baxter interviewed John Kinzenbaw, founder of Kinze and classic tractor collector. John shares the story of his company and the history of one of his favorite classic tractors, his 1970 John Deere 4520.
The 4520 was build from 1969 to 1970 with a total production of 7,894. They have a John Deere 6-cylinder, 404 cubic-inch, turbocharged diesel engine that can do 111 horsepower on the drawbar and 123 horsepower on the PTO. Back in 1972 this tractor would have cost you $11,600 US dollars or about $71,000 US dollars in 2019.

Having had a 4620 with the injector pump cranked all the way up (stock 150hp, cranked over 175hp) I would like to know how he go the power to the ground. We had the max wheel weights and the max nose weights on ours(dualed) and we wound up turning down the pump because we just could not get the traction. We were pulling a JD 28ft disk and a 5(?, a couple feet wider than the duals on each side) shank Brillion subsoiler(ripper). The Brillion we had to steer with the brakes because you could free spin the front wheels going down the field.

    • @thegreenerthemeaner

Worked on a 6030 once with 20.8s on all 4 rears, heavy cast centers. Used the 515lb weights on the inside and outside of the inners and 2 each on the outside wheels. It spun pulling a huge field cultivator with harrow. We put fluid in all 4. Owner called back upset that his new tractor had calcium chloride all over it and 3 flat tires on the rear. Tires spun on the wheels and sheared the valve stems off. We drilled then screwed the beads to the wheels after replacing the tubes and fluid. Problem solved. You can get them glued down with enough weight. I also had a 4620 turning 172. No issues pulling a 8 yard self loading Hancock scraper weighing 20k lbs plus loaded. No fluid but lots of cast iron and heavy cast duals. Firestone 23s.

Seriously though the Australian CSIRO RESEARCH in Agriculture proved beyond doubt in the 70sand 80s there is a maximum speed allowed for ground engaged equipment meaning more speed means more wear and tear on scarification tips and ploughing discs . @@Budd56 No opinion, even back in the day,GM was on the low end of the power stick, the only reason why other companies used their junk,louder-then-hell engines is because these were the cheapest bang-for-the-buck you could get.
You have to wind them up really tight to get any real power out of them.

detroit v8 is 4 cylinders long ,cat is 6 cylinders long. youd have to totally reconfigure the frame all the steering and fab a longer hood.. Einstein.

@UCEzUMM7-esRMHmENy61DBRA Let's see...the 4520 started out from John Deere with a LONG 6-cylinder inline engine in it,then it was shortened for the gutless junk 2-cycle V-8 it has now.
I recommended putting a engine that's very much like the original one it had in it before.(4-cycle,inline 6-cylinder)
So it took more work to put this junk V-8 in it then just putting in another inline 6-cylinder and beefing it up a bit.
(So much for the Einstein crack)

??????? You took a proven bulletproof John Deere Diesel engine out and replaced it with one of the worst brand of Diesel engines ever build and hacked it into a perfect tractor and the funny part is your proud of it

The engine in the 4520 was far from proven and bullet proof!! Iii remember we had one and it went projectile 2 times !! We went to. Get rid of it was going to trade it for a 4630 and the deere dealer showed us. A memo telling them to stay clear of those tractors when trading so we traded with my uncle on a white

The 4520 engine was a torque less turd if a motor, and far far from bullet proof

@@RJ1999x You yourself said the other day that an XT weighted down and loaded for bear wouldn't be kind to the planetaries or axles at 140 or 150. Remember, a 4620 bare is where you would about leave off on an XT weight wise. 46s could weigh near 18k fully weighted by Deere's standard. More was no problem, plenty of room left without fluid. I would have to look up what 20.8-38s weigh at 5lb per gallon calcium chloride. Just how much can an XT pack on? Mine had updated planetaries, turned 172 and whistled right along on the hottest of days without a whimper. I could Power Shift across headlands whilst you grind gears or stop and shift. Wish I still had it, I would bring it for a visit......maybe even figure out why your 720D starts so hard too!
