Plow Testing with Three John Deere Repowers and an 1150 Versatile

  • Welcome back!
    This week we managed to test all of our plows for the Rantoul Show. We broke the 12-bottom International Plow twice, the first time being a quick fix, and the second put it out of commission for the time being. All of the other repower plows worked great, and are a couple of fine adjustments away from being ready to go.
    I hope you enjoyed, and I'll see ya next time!

    Anyone else click the like button before even watching the video? Great stuff as always. I absolutely love that "5015" Detroit powered JD, and I really wish I could attend the Rantoul show and see these things in person. One day I'll have to drive up from Texas and attend myself.
    What terrible luck on the IH plow. I felt the frustration when it broke the second time all the way down here!
    One small suggestion/question. I'd love it if you'd spend a few more seconds going over the controls and cabs/operator stations on these machines in some of your videos. Biggest machine I've ever operated was a 4020, so I'm not familiar with most of the controls, features and different options of the wide variety of equipment y'all own.

    I've never seen a steering setup like the one with the cylinders . We had a
    IH 6 - 16 & a IH 7 - 16
    & we never had any trouble with them , we usually were plowing ground going from a field that had been in hayed for several years about 6 to 7 inches deep ,, but we weren't trying to use a tractor with a big Detroit engine either . Great & informative video .

    Really enjoyed the video awesome tractors you have. I always enjoy plowing. Growing up we had Massey Ferguson's . The MF 285 pulled 4.16's bottom plow. That was my favorite tractor to plow and work with, it had a much smoother ride then the smaller tractors that we had , a 275, 265 ,255 MF. Today I have a Massey Ferguson 3070 92hp it pulls a 4.16s bottom plow and has a ride very smooth, and a John Deere 5320 64hp pulls 3.16's bottom plow. and a IMT 539 39hp it pulls a 2.14's bottom plow. My son has a John Deere 6120M 120hp and a JD 1070 he did have a JD 5400 wished he kept it was a really good tractor. I am a Massey Ferguson person and a John Deere person.

    I am an International man since birth, and still am with my IHC-9400i but those John Deere's re-powered with Detroit's is awesome as hell. My next door neighbors have his and her early model John Deere row tractors for shows with the original JD putt-putt motors but neither of them can do the work of a re-powered JD with Detroit power. The K-Cummins in that International I have no experience with as I've never driven a truck with one installed but it sounds bad-ass. It's just sad that the red plow broke twice with very little effort. Cheap steel. Hook the Versatile up to one of those green plows and see if it can break those lol.

      If I’m not mistaken they are using the windshield washer fluid so they can leave it in over the winter and it will not freeze.

    • @diersirrigation
      @diersirrigation 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're in the south and it doesn't freeze then you can fill the tires with water. In much of the country where it freezes, you need to use a saline solution, washer fluid or beet juice so that the fluid doesn't freeze.

  • @thegreenerthemeaner
    @thegreenerthemeaner 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Sorry I haven't kept up on this. 12v71 = 375 hp, single turbo = 525. Twin turbos = 750. I am guess you have no turbochargers on the 4520. What most people don't know is that the 45/4620s had a very robust drive train, nearly as stout as a 5020. You had to absolutely be an Anvilator to tear one up. No doubt, the Detroits produce enough power to get the job done and you could likely pull the 12 bottom with the 4520 and shorten the life. For the record, 250 gallons of water weighs 2,075 lbs. Washer fluid mixes well with water so should be the same weight per gallon.

    Enjoyed the video but you might try dragging a chicken backwards and get more plowing done. Just kidding that's what my dad use to tell me when stuff broke

    Why did some deeres have the boxed in platform? A guy I worked for had a 5010 which did not have that...

      The shields around the front of the platform was for trying to keep dust away from the operator. They were found on standard or Wheatland machines. Some had 3 point, some did not. In the early years, the 5010 they did not have 3 point. The row crop 5020 appeared in 1966.

    Sorry you had so much trouble breaking the plow with the Versatile. It's the relentless and overwhelming power of the Cummins 1150....

    One too many hard starts on that hitch eye, I guess. 🤔😳
    Metal fatigue seems to be the enemy this year for you guys…but you should still needle grandpa about a heavy foot.😏
