Congratulations on reaching 1,000 subscribers! Keep up the great work! Totally agree with your take on the Iconic! Looks like we'll have to wait for the EVH 5150 "1992" and you nailed the tone from his IICP episode being terribly dark.
I loved the way you broke everything down in this vid, great job and right on top of it. I believe this guy always uses IR and admits he does "some" post processing. I purchased on one these amps a couple days ago, channel one is good with the OD engaged, but channel two was too nasal for me, maybe that was the lower mids you mentioned. Its going back. I get better results from my Revv G4 pedal into a return loop of my Marshall DSL 50w.
got mine just now. Using a Les Paul with JB in bridge and a 4x12 cab. Drive Channel: Bass - 7.5, mid - 6, Treb - 4, drive - 4, presence - 5, res - 4, Master - 4, no reverb. That looks like the sweet spot for me. I got what I wanted for the price point. The noise gate and reverb are selling points but, not usable for me. Overall, worth the price, IMO.
Sounds like a kick ass amp to me. And, i played the combo at guitar center and its a good amp. Did not have any fizz buzz in the distortion. And its nothing like the real fizz that the peavey 5150 has. To me, its like they took an jcm 800 and gave it the van halen brown sound mod. Im 58 and own plenty of marshall and British stacks amps. Not a damn thing wrong with this amp. I truly think the people on these channels have no clue what they're yapping their traps about. 5150 iconic is van halen #1 sound your hearing on the albulm.
Sounds like a distortion pedal or a valvestate hybrid amp and theyre deciding to charge $900 for it. Now that Ed's gone I hope they arent just planning to put 5150 on anything they can because they know it will sell.
The signs for this amp are not promising... However I'm yet to hear an actually good tone on Fluff's channel. He has so much gear for recording etc but still pumps out horribly undefined muck for guitar tones. I really want to believe that this amp is better but there's little hope haha Congrats on the 1k
James, give it time. Whoever approved the official release video must play through a Gorilla amp, and should be flogged in public. Check out the videos DanLeal has released. After watching his videos, I went out and ripped on the Iconic myself. You've worked your magic again. Now I just need to convince the wife to let me buy the Iconic. That green channel crunch is more fun than being at Disneyland by yourself.
@@musicmason you're absolutely right. It sounds great in others' videos, and thanks for sharing your personal thoughts having played the thing! Those cost-saving speakers and cheaply made cabs must be the main problem I assume...
@@JamesBrown-ef4nc been a minute since I posted, but I finally bought an Iconic of my own. I'm getting back into gigging so I went for the 40 watt combo (not a combo guy at all) so I don't freak out the sound guy showing up with a half stack. I haven't owned a combo since the original 5150 2x12 came out in the mid 90s and this new one is bringing back the pure joy I had as a teen ripping on the original. I agree with you about the speakers being a possible issue. The one that came in my combo was good, but needed some EQ for my taste. I ended up swapping it out for a new Celestion classic 20 watt 15 ohm greenback. I pretty much leave the EQ flat and rarely even touch the resonance/presence knobs unless the acoustics of the venue call for it. I still can't get over the green channel. That's where I live on this thing. It's so responsive with just the volume knob on my guitar. I'm going to see if I can use the boost button on the footswitch to control the overdrive button on the green channel. Nice work once again my friend.
I have a 333XL burger too, I won't sell it ever. I did hunt down a used Jet City JCA100HDM to get those Soldano/5150 style sounds, and for a fraction of the price of this new evh cash grab.
I’ve just subscribed to your channel after coming across this video.I enjoy watching people like yourself giving their honest opinions.I had high hopes for this amp but I’m not convinced from what I’ve heard so far.I don’t even think Fluff is convinced if I’m being honest and it seems like he is bullshitting a bit through out the video.
Tons of videos from people who actually own the amp all over the place now and it sounds insane. Going off that EVH gear demo it might be the cheap cab that’s the problem. Other people playing this head through regular 5150 cabs or Marshall cabs sounds so fucking good.
They should call it the EVH pawn shop, the people that buy this amp are going to pawn this amp. You’ll be able to buy one for $50.00 bucks.. Just wait 👍 There is more fizz in this amp than a 12 pack of beer 🍻..
The absolute truth about this amp. Just because it’s got EVH on it doesn’t make it a great amp. To make it sound a A small amount better they are having to use a IR or a good speaker cab and speakers. Save a little more money and get a stealth. You will be glad you you did. This is a Chinese distortion pedal. Much better amps out there for around the same money. Rubber Duck is telling you the truth in this video.
this head sounds amazing in a 2x12 or 4x12 cab loaded with greenbacks or even better with greenbacks and v30s in a cross pattern. and yes the reverb is garbage also in the release video there had to been some cheap speakers in that cab thats my guess.
Hater's, all of you. Go play one and reserve judgement till then. Most amps on the clean channel sound better with a good distortion pedal than the amp on it's highest gain channel.
No hate from me, just observations on what we’ve been given. I would hate for EVH to release a sub par product and drag their name down. It would go against everything Ed stood for and worked so hard to build. In Kyle Bull’s videos he sure is making this amp sound killer.
I've never been a fan of fluff's recorded tones either. I think a lot of the iconic unhappiness also stems from the fact that not only is it sub par product but Peavey has shut most of its American factories down even after the undercover boss episode all about Peavey (a cringe worthy watch!). One critique of your reaction video - would have been better to silence the video playing on your voice mic (it was picking up your monitors) so giving an echo in the video. 👍 Otherwise love the channel mate
@@RDamps yeah i thought so too . i did think the evh demo was just a bit gainy but i like heavy .fluff did a shoot out with 6505 and 5150 iii n this one and they where all ahh close every one of the demos sounds a bit different from each other and 900 bucks how do we like our tone ????
Nah I call BS on everything, get a Jet City JCA50, HDM100 if you want good hi gain (and cleantoo) from an All tube head, only around used, but I would say they actually sound better than the original 5150 (I have JCA 50, a 5150 block letter and a JCM800 and the JCA50 is the best of the bunch)
Great to hear! I had the hunch feeling I'd be better off chasing a Jet City JCA100HDM instead of a new evh cash grab. The 100HDM is a poor man's Hot Rod 100+, which in turn is also a poor man's SLO100. Then again the OG peavey 5150 also is a poor poor man's SLO100, as peavey and van Halen used the SLO100 to base it from when it was released. Better go with the cheap, well made "copy", designed by the man himself, Mike Soldano, hence the 100HDM as a clear choice for those Soldano style sounds.
I call the amp the EVH "Ironic" because it is nothing like the Marshall that made his tone ICONIC! IF EVH were to make a truly ICONIC Van halen amp it would have to be a 12000 series Plexi super lead style with variac built in. I am not a post Marshall VH fan to be honest. I prefer his tones from 78-84. not into the heavy pitch de tune tones that came later.
I've been one of the many that was waiting for this amp to drop. I'm a huge Van Halen fan and want to see the EVH Brand succeed. I'm not one to normally judge tone either because I'm a nobody, but I can say that as soon as I started watching the EVH video I too heard the fizz and was immediately taken aback. Fluff's video review was awful (sorry Fluff). He's a chug chug chugger, poor playing on the lower strings (and overall) really pigeon holed the tonality of the review which does nothing to show the amps tonal capabilities. You need to lead play in a demo for these types of amps, and Fluff has zero lead playing skill. Also at the end of the video when he was blowing sunshine up the ass of EVH I immediately got the impression that his review was biased, and that he dare not say anything wrong about this amp in fear of being cut from the EVH "Favored TH-camr" list. So.....I'm still waiting for a decent, unbiased review of this amp with some decent audio from someone that knows how to play a guitar. However, with what we've been provided so far, and with your comments on the current discounting (valid).....well let's just say I'm worried. I hope we're all wrong about this amp.
I wanted this to be a successful amp. I hate to see the legacy that Eddie created watered down and just be used as a cash cow. To do so would be a disgrace.
There's certain aspects of the tone I like but overall I wouldn't buy it. I really like the way it sounds with pinch harmonics as it reminds me of my Ampeg Lee Jackson even though those are two very different amps. I was hoping this amp would be an awesome budget amp but it's just meh and unimpressive. I think the marshall dsl sounds better but I'm not too into those either
He's playing into the 500 dollar 4x12 cab how good can this be at 500 ? will they make any profit ? if so then your left with maybe $250 in cab and speaker's sooooooooo ?
LMFAO American Chappers? That’s fucking brutal, mate. Fluff is cool.

They made the "ironic" 5150 look like shit to fluff up the new "1992". Just get a peavey 6505 instead.
