That's what fascinated me, too - we know different colors go into making the rich brown Vintage Photo, but this gave us a clue as to what they actually were! Thanks for watching!
There is a distress refresher which is a great product. I’ve never needed to throw out a distress pad. Even after years and years of using them. I only have the minis and they still work well.
Tim Holtz says it doesn't matter because the ink is suspended in the pad. He says you can store them in any direction unless perhaps you live somewhere really humid. 🤷♀️
What a beautiful batch of papers Ann, great idea. I have a Victorian velvet that will just not give me any colour so I’m gonna try this with that, hopefully will get a nice dusky pink colour! I once saw Natassa at treasure books make her own inks by soaking the inside of old felt tip pens in water. So many great ideas! Thank you hun😘😘
Oh my gosh, Sue, I am literally gasping with joy at the thought of your using this technique with Victorian Velvet...what secrets will that lovely pink ink pad reveal about itself! I hope you'll share the results with us! (If Charlie doesn't use the paper crumples as toys, which he probably will...hahaha)
Corrie, I hear you! So glad you will try this. I laughed when I heard myself say "this ink pad doesn't owe me anything" because that was a phrase my dear mother used ALL the time - but I still love having them go out in a blaze of (inky) glory!
WOW! Amazing thing to do with an almost dead Distress Ink pad! Thanks for showing what can be done with the inky water and some copy paper! Your paterned papers look wonderful! ~Janet in Canada
Just brilliant, I'm all for squeezing as much as you can out of my purchases, and great to see how much colour you rescued and put to good use. Love it.
What a great idea. I will make sure to start saving dried out ink pads. For the crumpled pages you could spritz the white spots with your saved liquid. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks so much, Tanya! And yes, that spray bottle of the leftover inky water has already come in handy. Who knew that our beloved Vintage Photo could have so many looks?
Thank you for this wonderful video. I am brand new at junk journaling. Havent even done one yet as I am doing the supply gathering and set up now. Wow, that’s amazing….I too, never throw out my ink pads and forever spray water on it to re activate, but wow I am definitely going to try this, you got so much more use out of that and the papers came out fabulous!! 😃, Thx Anne, love your channel! ❤❤❤
Can you spray water to refresh an oxide ink pad too? I've have quite a few I've only used a couple of times but they have run dry so ink still in them just dried out, wasn't sure if be OK with water
I love the effects you have achieved here. I don't have any worn out ink pads but I do have some reinkers so I might just put a few drops in water and try this. I love the way the colors separate. Thanks for the tips. Now I shall have to take a look at your other videos, this is my first visit here.
Jan, I'm so delighted you joined me here! We have a lot of fun and I try to emphasize new ideas - or at least ideas that are new to me, and may be to my viewers, too! Anyway, thanks so much!!!
GREAT PAPER!! You have discovered the process of "chromatography, Ann!" I have used alcohol with black, alcohol-based markers on strips of paper. Different companies use different formulas, so the results of their respective markers can vary. Now about the yellow and purple colors that you see on your papers - not surprising. When we are painting/coloring with yellow and purple, we often avoid mixing them because we get "mud" -> brown! Although this is the short version, sorry it is so long, but you understand: never pass up the teaching moment! Lol
Hooray for science! That Vintage Photo ink is so ubiquitous for all of us, it seems - and it was exciting to discover its hidden life. Thanks so much for the explanation, you know how I love those details - here's to chromatography!!
We're always learning, aren't we? I love it, too. I've since learned that the process is called chromatography. Thanks so much for watching, I know you'll have fun with this, too!
With Distress Ink, if you put water on pad it's going to activate the properties that cause it to wick when you spray the paper. You can get Distress Ink refresher. For pads that aren't physically worn out, you can also reink the pad using the correct Distress Reinker color. I think what you did with your definitely worn out pad a great idea! Very cool papers to use as a jumping off point for all your suggestions. The fabric you got as well is very cool. Love what you did with stencils as well. Shows how much ink was left in the pad.
As I mentioned, I did spray with water and use reinkers for a long time before officially declaring my Vintage Photo pad officially spent. I’m glad you liked the end result. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing. I love how your papers have turned out. Beautiful colours. Who would have thought that to be the outcome. Lots of fun experimenting isnt it 😊
That first one looks like an autumn evening with the sun just starting to set in the Highlands. The papers are beautiful. I'm definitely going to do this next time. Thank you for showing us this wonder 😍
Thanks, Patricia! It had been on my mind to try for a long time, and I finally got around to doing it - didn't even plan to make a video out of it, but the results were so interesting I just had to share the results! Glad everyone seemed to enjoy it so much!
If crumples aren’t “your thing” but you love the coloration, you can iron the paper to flatten it out. I especially love the look made with the stencils. WOW
@ Oh I understand, I merely posted this so others that may like the technique but not the crumple may not know about ironing papers. I’ve done this many times when a pretty paper gets unexpected creases. Love how your journal cover turned out.
Woman, YOU are a genius!! I'm only 7 minutes into this video and I had to comment! I have this crappy brown mini distress ink, and i mean whenever I use it my project ends up looking like smeared cat poo got on it, and I absolutely hate it! But if it can give me anything like the results you got I would love it! It's still got plenty of ink in it so it would be perfect since it's only a mini! Guess what I'm going to be sacrificing this weekend!!! 😈😁🤣💯❤❤
I had such a lovely chuckle reading this and am so happy you now have a use for that unfortunate color! I have one or two that fall into that category for me as well. While the dried-up Vintage Photo is what I used in this video, I might use some of those others that make me say "ummm, NO" - thanks for the idea to do just that!
I love that you “fuss” with the paper, I always have trouble knowing when to stop embellishing. Love your work and thanks for the inspiration! Can’t wait for the video of you making the cover embellishments!
Carol, "fussing" is EXACTLY what I do!!! Thanks for recognizing my fussy ways! Soon I'll be fussing over cover embellishments, too! What fun, thanks for watching.

I’ve only have Distress mini pads since 2016. I have never had one that needed to be tossed. I do reink them. The only ink pad I’ve had about 20 yrs (memento black) that started shedding and I replaced this yr. And yes, I use mine a LOT. I make 40-50 cards a month. I don’t use ink pad to go along edge of paper. Instead I smush ink onto by mat and use blending tool to edge paper. Yes, I’ve had to toss the sponge on blending tool from time to time. I have some Color Box ink pads that are getting ready hard after 20+ years of use. Maybe I’ll try your trick to see if I can get some ink from them but think I’ll try using watercolor paper instead.
Love the patterns on the wrinkled papers. I’ll take a warm iron to wrinkly paper to smooth it out before I bind it. Makes a beautiful surface for whatever comes next.
Curses! If only I’d posted this video two weeks ago! 😀 Thanks for the smile, Carol, and I’m sure you’ll have fun doing this with your next spent ink pad! ❤️❤️❤️
Anne this is totally fabulous 👌 I also use this stencil technique as I'm not much of a soaker. ALSO how awesome does the new color complement those old ones! Perfect 😅
If my inks ever need to be replaced, I plan on using the cases to make a clock. Needing 12 but my all are in excellent condition. I’m always really careful with them. The mini inks would be perfect for a clock.
What an amazing turned of ink. Stunning papers. Well worth trying. Interesting all the different colors that were mixed to come up with the end result. Very nice project. Thank you Anne for sharing❤❤❤❤
Rose, so glad you enjoyed this! It was fascinating to see these colors just reveal their secrets - I love that about working with different media. Thanks for watching!
I love all of these but the crumpled up ones remind me of looking at the clouds in the sky and seeing what images you can see. Really beautiful. Thanks 🌷
I thought of that, too, honestly - the gleam of the sun behind storm clouds as they recede. Our imaginations bring us such lovely interpretations. Thanks so much for watching and sharing, Helen, I appreciate you!
First visit to your page, so glad I found it.I thought you were going to spray your pages with ink in the small bottle. Bet that would increase the beauty.
Hello Ann, If you go for a 2nd application on ink dye and its not giving you a deep enough color then add a drop of re-inker to the water. Maybe that will help. I really enjoy spending time watching you.
FYI - the color brown is created by mixing colors that are opposite on a color wheel. Yellow-Purple; Blue-Orange; Red-Green. You’ll notice that those combos are a primary color and a mix of the other two primary colors (green, purple, orange), so you can use just the 3 primary colors but that will come closer to black. And depending on the combo used, will change the type of brown you get. HAVE FUN MIXING!
Anne, this is absolutely brilliant! I have so many ink pads that are dying and I just haven't tossed them - probably because the darn things cost so much initially. So I'm going to get them out this afternoon and try this. Your papers turned out beautiful. Thank you for this lovely idea!
@pooie0116 I don't know the answer. I dyed fabric and lace for journal enclosures. I just left them in the dye water overnight. I didn't heat set or wash. I would think it would not hold up very good in the wash since the ink is water soluble., but can't say for sure. I'm sorry, I know that's not much help.
paper turned out great, I may try this with cloth. And you know you may be able to re-ink that pad now, since you have given a new breath of life to. Thanks for sharing
Alana, I did use my "second round" ink solution to lightly dye some more white muslin and it turned out beautifully! I did think about re-inking my old ink pad after this experiment, but its surface is so tattered by now that it was just time to give it a rest. Thanks for watching!
I certainly did enjoy this video - loved the results and colours. The title of the video is what got me in - well done on that. I am a new subscriber and am looking forward to going through some other videos by you.
Several folks have mentioned that to me, and it's a great tip. Thanks so much. I'll check my grandson's craft supplies here and see if there are any ready to enter the experiment!
This is great! I really like the second page you unfolded. I can't wait to use up one of my ink pads. I have done a similar thing with the colored inks from my printer. I smashed the cartridge and removed the pad. I use bowls left over from my turkey lunch sandwiches. Put the pad in with some water and let it soak. I use this to dye some copy paper. I didn't get the great modeling of colors that you got, but I got a lot of different colors of paper. Thanks for sharing. I love the look you got on these papers.
What a great process with the cartridges, Cindy! I don't have a color printer so I can't try that one, but I absolutely love knowing you're wringing all the potential you can from these things that would otherwise be thrown away.
Beautiful! Yellow and purple make brown. It’s nice to see that this process separates those colors back to their semi original form. Nice aging look!
Good for you, Cathy! Thanks for watching!
If you keep your ink pads stored upside down, the ink won't settle into the bottom, therefore lasting longer...
Another good tip, thank you!
Yep. I, too, keep them upside down
Tim Holtz says it doesn't matter because the ink is suspended in the pad. He says you can store them in any direction unless perhaps you live somewhere really humid. 🤷♀️

@@nancybennett1087 yes, he has said this many times. His tins for the inks, same ones he uses, has the inks standing up on the ends.

Thanks so much for watching, Cheryl, I appreciate you!
You could iron the papers to smooth them out, but I love how they turned out!
Thank you, Steph, I really appreciate it!
Wow Thank You for your experiment, it gave me so much inspiration for my old distress ink pads, which I almost toss
Thanks so much, Maria - I'm delighted you found it useful!
Wow! Who would have thought it would give such a cool effect!
It was quite a surprise for me as well!! Thanks for watching!
Quite fascinating! I love the dyed papers!
Thanks so much, Jen! It was easy and fun and I love being able to use something up before tossing it!
Love all the results, especially the stenciled ones. Crumpled ones - love. Will subscribe

Very interesting and I will definitely try this. Thank you. 🙏
Thank you, Rhonda - I know you'll love it!
I have some dried up pads I couldn't bear to part with. Can't wait to try this. Thanks much
You're going to love this, Mary, it's such a fun experiment!
Your experimental play/ style is so fun! Cant wait to try this!!!
Thanks so much for watching! I know yours will be fun, too!
Keep both sides of the little pad for keeping small cutouts or fussy cuts - just get rid of the pad part.
Great idea, thanks! Those little cases are indeed very handy!
Thanks for sharing your color wheel knowledge! I just love seeing these unique colors!
I love your idea! The papers came out so BEAUTIFULLY! 🎉❤🎉
Thank you so much - what a fun surprise these were! Yay, science!
They are so cool...I never would have thought of this idea!
Thank you so much, it was a total surprise to me, too! I thought Vintage Brown would stay brown, but not so!
Anne, this is absolutely brilliant! I have so many ink pads that are dying and I just haven't tossed them - probably because the darn things cost so much initially. So I'm going to get them out this afternoon and try this. Your papers turned out beautiful. Thank you for this lovely idea!
What perfect timing, then! This makes me so happy. Thank you, Sandi, for letting me know this! Your papers will be lovely and surprising!
Fabulous ideas! I love the stencil papers. The journal cover looks great!!
Thank you so much - clearly, I had great fun with it, too!
This is fabulous. You are so creative and inspire me to no end!!! Heart❤
You’re too kind! So glad you’re inspired!
Love this idea! Will definitely have to try it.
Thanks, Fran, I know you'll love it as much as I do!

Amy, thank you so much for tuning in - I'm delighted you're here!
❤I've done this before to dye fabric. I love how your papers turned out! Tyfs😊gorgeous goodness !!!
Thanks so much, Christy! It just feels good to squeeze the living daylights out of an old craft supply!
@annekenlon yes ma'am! Agreed. Makes me feel accomplished! 😊
Are fabrics dyed in this manner colorfast? Can they be washed? Do they need to be heat set? Thanks for any additional info about this!
@@CraftedByChristyShop OK, thanks for the reply anyway. (I've got some experimenting to do!)
Beautiful colors and a great idea. Thanks for sharing. Happy creating.
Thank you so much, I'm always so happy to be able to share these little discoveries!
Very cool idea, Anne. I have a bunch of old markers. I hope to pull the colored wicks out of them and try your process. 😊
Several folks have mentioned that possibility and I think it sounds like a great idea - most certainly worth a try! Thanks for watching, Diane!
paper turned out great, I may try this with cloth.
Wow! Who knew? This is a great hack.
Thanks so much, Hilary!
Amazing!💜🐞
I'm so glad you liked the results, Ila, thanks for watching!
I certainly did enjoy this video - loved the results and colours. The title of the video is what got me in - well done on that. I am a new subscriber and am looking forward to going through some other videos by you.

Thank you so much, Rosarie. I'm so happy you watched and found it useful!
This is amazing ... never would have thought of doing that... thanks Lois
Thanks for watching, Lois, I really appreciate your watching!
The stencilled ones are my favourite. Can you iron them after they are dried to use for card backgrounds?
Yes, you absolutely can!
😮 Reminds me of the gel pad colors.
It does indeed! Thanks for watching!
Hi Anne! What a great tip! Love how the papers turned out! I also love the coffee smell. TFS🩷🩷🌹🌹
I'm so glad you enjoyed these papers, Marcia, they were a happy surprise!
OMG Ann…… those colours were amazing. Thanks so much for sharing with us again. ❤
Thank you so much, Nina! I'm really glad you enjoyed this one.
Lovely pages. I do this with dried up markers too
Several folks have mentioned that to me, and it's a great tip. Thanks so much. I'll check my grandson's craft supplies here and see if there are any ready to enter the experiment!
@ glad I found your channel on suggestions
Thanks for those great ideas!
You're so welcome, glad you liked them!
I don’t do the oven either. I use the paintbrush method. Fast and easy. Will try this next time.
Having the paintbrush handy is perfect especially for quick dying jobs!
What a great way to use up the remnant of your ink pads. You are always so creative with your experimentation. Love the stencilled ones😊❤
Thanks so much, Suzy! It's always fun to use up the very last bit of things, isn't it?
Good idea and beautiful results!
Thanks so much, I'm delighted you tuned in!
This great hack of yours just earned you a new subbie. Crafty hugs from Carmen, 65, Germany 🇩🇪
