    Just got my grandfather’s cricket restored. It was given to him in 1963 as an award for sales at a Ford dealership. Great to see the brand revived and for you to do a video on this watch.

    Can we please let Guillaume Laidet revive Universal Genève next? I know he would be the first in line to carry this duty if you give him the chance. Polerouter and Compax chronos desperately need a revival now.

    I found a watch with an old cricket movement in it stamped as a "Hallmark" in a little antique shop in Texas for $30, didn't think it worked until I did some more research and tinkered around with it, now I have a fully functioning cricket in a gold case for $30 and it's absolutely one of my most favorite watches
    One interesting thing I noticed is that they changed the direction of winding, on mine, winding forward winds the alarm and winding backwards powers the timekeeping

      Gold cased too. What a find!! Let a watchmaker put it on a timegrapher to see the movement condition. If it needs a service or just some TLC you have a watch that deserves it. 😊😉

    Not too much, not too little: Vulcain got it just-right here, and the price, while out of my league, isn't outrageous for what you're getting, including a 100% bespoke movement. Excellent overview yet again, Teddy!

    Vulcain and Revue Thommen Cricket watches are so undervalued nowadays. Can pick up a clean (neo) vintage example for only a couple hundred bucks.

    • @coffeeortea547
      @coffeeortea547 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Wait seriously? Like ebay/etsy?
      Edit: Ahhh, looks like the vintage Vulcains are a fair bit more expensive than the Revue Thommens.

    • @jb-hw9if
      @jb-hw9if ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes, but the Revue Thomen crickets were manufactured with two different movements; initially an A Schilds movement and then the Vulcain based movement. Getting the version with the Vulcain movement for a few hundred dollars or pounds is a great buy.
      Also, why doesn't Vulcain themselves or any TH-camr that looks at this watch ever mention that Vulcain with the Cricket sponsored the 1954 expedition on K2, the first successful summit of that mountain.

    I found your video on Vulcaine's Cricket while looking up this watch. I had never heard of this brand before but my wife and I are watching Hawaii Five-O on dvd. The main character, Steve Mcgarrett, wore some interesting watches on the show. I finally got a good look at one of them by stopping the DVD and it was a Vulcaine. I watch your videos quite a bit but I missed this one a year ago!

    If only alarm complication in mechanical watches were popular amongst watch brands today. I believe it's one of the quirkiest complications and rather a useful one too. It would be nice to see a re-released Seiko Bell-matic or any similar mechanical alarm watch with hopefully a more reasonable price tag.

    I actually own a Vulcain Cricket Calendar. It is my grandfather's old watch. When I got it from him, he made me promise to wear the watch, or at least keep it as a display piece. The case and crystal are quite damaged, but it's still a very beautiful piece. Since a few weeks the watch doesn't run longer than an hour or two after I wind it, so I'll have to bring it in to the watch repair shop in the near future.

    I think that photo is Eisenhower, not Truman. It's confusing because the site Chronopedia has the photo with a caption about Truman being presented with the watch but also says that in 1956 Eisenhower sounded the alarm, leading to the ad slogan "Do as Ike does!"
    Anyway, that Truman was the first president to wear the watch in 1953 doesn't seem to be in dispute, but I think this photo is Eisenhower.

    • @BAF605

    I have two Poljot 2612.1 watches with original parts. One quite visibly aged but also my favorite. Same movement as the AS 1930, which makes them workhorses that could potentially last forever, and you can pretty easily buy more movements to use for spare parts for less than 100 USD if you have the tools and knowledge to service them yourself. They have slightly different dial/hand styles available, but my favorite is the one with both a 12 and 24 hour rule. Minute rules on all of them of course, because if a dial lacks a minute rule I don't care about it.

  • @jayhoge5965
    @jayhoge5965 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I got a Cricket when I was in high school in 1968. I owned it for 30 years until it was stolen. I later owned a Vulcain Diver which also had a V-10 movement. It's still in my rotation.
    In my experience, the V-10 is a remarkably rugged and reliable movement requiring only minimal maintenance. The alarm is very handy for everyday reminders (eg, call me back in an hour). Much simpler to use than a cell phone alarm
    I was saddened when Vulcain disappeared a few years ago and I;m very please that they're back.

    Teddy, fascinating review - can’t thank you enough!! I dug out my grandfather’s Vulcain Crickett (in the drawer for 37 years) which he wore non-stop whether seeing patients in clinic (MD), or out stretching barb-wire on our south Texas land he loved it and it’s stainless-steel case reflects that in the wear. The dial and crystal are unscathed though and because he secured it w/ an expandable speidel watch band I have the original new leather band, case, and paperwork that came with/ it. It’s amazing that he paid $37.50 for it back in 1950’s. It still runs well. Wondering where you would advise I get it serviced? Definitely working it into the rotation. Can’t thank you enough for resurrecting this watch, and a part of him, in my heart and mind😊❤

    Beautiful watch and I'm happy to see the revival of Vulcain. I have a vintage 1960s Vulcain Meteor III that needs work before its running and wearable again, but it was in an incredible condition (case and dial) and has a very 60s 'Mad Men' look. Fortunately its movement was ETA-based so it should be repairable.

    I’ve serviced/restored several vintage Cricket cal 120- just finished one today so nice timing on the review Teddy! The latest was in a watchmaker’s spares drawer but is running great and I think the loudest Cricket I’ve heard…one thing- the cal 120 has a ‘neutral’ position for the crown where the alarm won’t sound. One push of the pusher gets you there while a second push gets to setting the alarm. My wife’s Cricket from 2022 has it as well. Do the new V10s not have that neutral position?

    • @jb-hw9if
      @jb-hw9if ปีที่แล้ว

      My Revue Thomen Cricket has this neutral, alarm off, position. The movement is the RT80, the successor to the MSR2 that in turn was the successor to the 120 i think. I'd have thought the latest V10 also has it.

    100% in favour of more videos like this. I don't always view watch channels for the same well known brands. I did not even know this brand existed.

    Very cool… nice watches. The black dial is by far the better looking piece and most legible.

    Video suggestion, can you do a video about colorful summer watches please?

    I really like this watch. Very cool. I wonder why Vulcain never use the 1954 K2 expedition story to advertise this watch.

    I am so pleased to see you cover a unique watch such as this! Please consider highlighting more of these types of watches. The backstory is unusual and interesting and watches like this are beautiful. Thank you for an excellent video! Well done 🥃

    Can you do a deep dive on Christopher Ward. Mainly reputation and quality of the brand. Awesome designs. Affordable price. But are they solid watches and worth the purchase? Perfect beater?

    I like how he mentioned that this is not a going to be his most viewed video. I was this close 🤏 to not watching it but I gave it a chance and did. What a watch and what a brand!! Super glad I gave it a chance.

    Another great video, Teddy! I have a question, though: Is there a way to specify AM or PM with the alarm? I can't see one. So if you set it for 6:00, is the alarm gonna go off at 6 AM and then again at 6 PM?

    The salmon dial is CLUTCH, I’d actually use that alarm function as well. 5k is STEEP imo, granted they have the heritage and all but still. I’d definitely get something like that under 3k

    As a kid (long time ago), I remember an older gentleman, who was a customer of our family market, having one of these watches. He called it his President’s watch(?) With a buzzer? Now it (finally) makes sense…I can sleep tonight.

    This is great, I would seriously consider one. I would be concerned about the price though.

    THe black or dark dial appeals to me.

    Really interesting video thank you. Such a shame watch brands are upping their prices. A bit disheartening really. I’d be interested around the £2k mark. £4K for the 39mm seems extreme.
